I POD HAS BEEN DETECTED BUT CANNOT BE IDENTIFIED PROPERLY

my 6th generation nano shuffle when plugged in responds with the message:
"i pod has been detected but could not be identified properly"
then i am prompted to reinstall itunes. have done this but the problem remains.
i cannot sync from my itunes.
help please?

I spent an hour on Apple help last night with this problem. We tried all the obvious things first:
1. resetting the ipod.
2. changing USB ports
3. removing all other USB connections.
4. Uninstalling Itunes and installing a fresh copy.
5. clearing the saved application data (in Application Data / Itunes a hidden file on my version of Windows 7).
6. changing the drive letter in disk manager (the ipod would not show up with Itunes installed but did show up when it was uninstalled).
7. Deleting the USB connection and allowing it to reestablish itself in Device Manager (the USB connection showed up in device manager with a conflict notification).
NONE OF THIS FIXED IT!
I got to the second level of tech support and we repeated most of the above.
Here is what worked in Windows 7.
1. Go to Device Manager (click on Start / control panel/ Hardware and Sound / Device Manager).
2. In device manager click on the drop down arrow for the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
3. Right click on the "Mass Storage Device" (all other USB drives should be removed prior to this) and choose "Update Driver Software".
4. Browse to C drive / Program FilesX86 / Common Files / Apple / Drivers and click ok to update the USB drivers.
NOTE my copy of Itunes did NOT have a driver file in this location! so instead we pointed to the same location as above except instead of Program Filesx86 we used the same path except using "Program Files" with NO X86!
C drive / Program Files / Common Files / Apple / Drivers
Once the driver updated I rebooted the computer with the Ipod attached and it recognized the ipod.
I think that not having the driver files in the X86 path is a bug in the software. I hope this helps!!

Yes -that again- the reason I'm making a new post is that this is the second time an ipod hasn't worked with me, I would like to know if there's something I can do to my system or whatever to repair it. Here's the situation.
    - Just so ya know, I use Vista on a laptop [unfortunatley]
    - Previously [as in yesterday] I had an ipod touch, it was stuck in recovery mode and nothing [and I mean nothing] worked to recover it, it wasn't being recognized at all. This problem occured when I installed Itunes 9.
    - Today I bought myself a brand new iPod Nano (5th Gen) for several reasons [not just to do with the itouch breaking, I was sick to death of the thing in general], took it home and connected it. 'A new ipod has been detected but cannot be identified' yadda yadda.
    - I tried everything, I have also downgraded my itunes back to 8, still the same message!! Argh! Here's the thing (that I think might be causing the problem) when I open Device Manager and go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers, there is no apple/ipod recognized. There is a 'USB Mass Storage Device' whch has an error symbol next to it, I've tired updating/reinstalling it etc and it doesn't work ):
    - Is there anything anyone can do? I'm so sick of ipods breaking on me. Just so you guys know, I'm not completley computer savvy so i'll need precise instructions, thanks so much to anyone who can help me.

This is how it's displayed: http://i50.tinypic.com/nd7vk7.jpg
And this is what happens when I click properties and 'search for solutions': http://i47.tinypic.com/2iu3vrc.jpg (the box disappears after that, apparently having done nothing, when I search online for software it informs me my computer already has the best/latest installed)
    I use a Toshiba Satelite L350-170, my Vista is a 32-bit Thankyou!

  • An iphone has been detected but it could not be identified

    hi,
since i updated my itunes in the beginning of may, my iphone is not recognized by itunes anymore. i have been searching for a solution on this for almost two months now, but none of the tipps i found does work. i allways get the message, that the phone has been detected, but cannot be identified. the phone is recognized by windows and i can see it in the device manager. but itunes wont recognize it.
i found a ton of solutions for this problem and tried everything. from fully removing all apple software, changing the usb-cable, changing the port, pulling out all other usb-devices, updating the mobile device driver, restoring the phone, installing an older itunes version and so on. it just doesnt work. the only time it is recognized in itunes, is when i am in recovery mode. but when i reset the phone it's gone after the restart of the device, and i get the same message as always.
the funny thing: a friend of mine has the same problem with his 3GS (i tried it both with my 3G and the new 4). he's also using a sony vaio VGN-FZ31J with vista running (i'm using vista business, he's using vista home). BUT: if i plug my phone into my girlfriends vaio (also with vista home) everything works fine.
do you have any suggestions what i can try to get it to work again?

On the new account, can iTunes connect to the internet properly?
Firewall blocking outgoing connections of iTunes?
