My I-pod shows up on my computer but is not recognized under devices in I-Tunes, any suggestions?

    Hey corky60,
I'd go ahead and give the following troubleshooting steps a shot:
    1. Try the iPod troubleshooting assistant:
    2. Restart the iPod Service
    3. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
    4. Empty your Temp directory and restart
    5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
    6. Change your iPod's drive letter
    7. Remove and reinstall iTunes
    8. Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items
    9. Update, Reconfigure, Disable, or Remove Security Software
    10. Deleting damaged or incorrect registry keys
You can read more about each step in detail in this article:
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363
I'd start at the top and work through the steps until iTunes recognizes your iPod nano.
    Take care,

  • 2nd gen nano not recognized on computer or i-tunes

We have 3 nano's in the house; 2 first gen's and 1 2nd gen. The first gen's are working fine. However, when I connect the 4G 2nd gen into the computer (any computer...3 of them...)it is not recognized by the computer, i-tunes, anywhere! Won't even charge from computer. Will plug, play and charge in i-home, but not on computer. I have done the 5 R's (except restore because the computer won't recongnize it...); reinstalled i-tunes; reset, forced to disk mode, etc. I'm out of ideas. 4 months out of warranty of course! Anyone know what to do?

    Hello bigbthomson,

  • I-Pod not recognized

Whenever I plug my I-Pod Photo into my laptop with Vista, I get told the USB Device is not recognized. Any ideas on what I can do? As of right now my laptop is the only computer I have at college, and I'd rather not have to wait until I can get my desktop sent.

See if any of these articles help.

  • 3G iPod Not Recognized in Vista

I have a 3G iPod, and I'm trying to connect it to sync, but Vista is not recognizing it. It keeps asking me to insert the disc so it can search the disc for a driver. I've never had this problem before. The iPod says "do not disconnect", but itunes doesn't launch, or recognize it when opened manually, and in device manager windows has a little question mark by the ipod. I've run out of idea. I'm trying to connect it via firewire. My iPod nano is found fine. Any help would be appreciated.
Also if anyone knows why suddenly iTunes can't find certain songs and my playlists are suddenly blank, even though the songs are physically still on my hard drive, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know.

Close down iTunes, try a USB port on the back of the PC and see if Vista recognizes it....if so, then fire up itunes.

  • New iPod not recognized in Vista PC and no devices in iTunes

Hello, plugged iPod Touch into computer and Vista showed usual little box which said automatically located drivers and installed them. But couldn't find iPod in My computer. Installed iTunes from download area. No devices in left column.
Reinstalled iTunes from fresh download. Plugged iPod in every USB point on computer, but nothing happens. IPod not found or recognized.
Tried to find USB driver in Device Manager but all have generic names and so can't identify which driver was installed for iPod. None show installation date or anything which may identify which one. Also forgot to create restore point first (kicking self - always do this normally before installing something new).
Been through Apple help pages and tried all their ideas including reinstalling. Still nothing found.
Could someone please suggest what to do, besides dropping computer out of window?
    Many thanks
    Phil Chave

  • I-pod not recognized by Computer

Hello, everyone. I've had my 80G classic for about two years and last week bad things happened. When I plugged in my I-pod it said that this device could work better using USB 2.0. I thought that this was weird but didn't think much of it.( My I-pod had been using USB 2.0 for a few months on this computer) then the next day. It stopped connecting at all and says that this device can not be recognized. I have turned off my PC and tried pulling the power cord out. I've tried reinstalling my drivers. The funny thing is that I can still charge my I-pod with fire-wire and it works normal besides this.

That sounds like something strange may have happened to your USB drivers, lichu.
In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you worked through the following document?

  • I-Pod not recognized by laptop

    Dear All,
I use my i-pod as an archive flash disk. I tried to plug it yesterday to different computers, and none have recognized it. I have checked USB ports and all are fine. While not recognized the i-Pod is still charging (using power from lap top) which seems to indicate that cable is fine. What to do? I am really stuck and I desesperatly need some of the data on the pod. Tks for any tips/solutions. F

  • Click Wheel iPod not recognized by Vista Retail

I have a 20gb click wheel ipod that Vista v6.0 does not recognize in device manager. iTunes does not recognize the unit either.
I'm surprised that Apple has not addressed the problem comprehesively but rather suggests generic fixes for all their products such as the 5r's. Particularly given the number of customers with the same issue. Hope was dashed with the promise of a fix in the latest version of iTunes. End user fixes are innovative but I had hope that Apple would use its resources to address the issue with a retooled and workable driver (presuming this is where the issue is).
After searching the forums and trying every conceivable fix from formatting, usb ports, older versions of iTunes and Windows drivers, I'm in need of a fresh perspective.
The most noteworthy link to an article from end users I've attempted which unfortunately did not resolved the problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2001067#2001067 (Thanks to Buegie for the comprehensive approach).
Is anyone aware of ongoing efforts from Apple to address the issue with a software fix or have they abandoned support of older models?

    Ken,
UAC was disabled on the machine from the first day Vista was installed and long before any other software was installed. I suspect that it would have been disabled in safe mode regardless although I've never tested that theory.
I was surprised to read that Adobe would not install for you unless UAC was on. I installed Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 yesterday without UAC on and without incident.
Above you describe you are trying to resolve problems similar to my own. If your ipod was not recognized by Windows or iTunes, I encourage you to disconnect your cable from the pc, boot it in safe mode and then connect the cable. There are a number of different issues and fixes revolving around this issue but surely this would be one of the simple ones to try. I tried them all and I really mean all so I was nothing short of stunned to see this work. Good luck.

  • External Hard Drive Not Recognized In Vista?

I have a Western Digital MyBook hard drive, 500 GB. I have my Time Machine backups un there as well as my iTunes music.
However, whenever I am in Vista, it never shows up in the Explorer.
    Why is this happening?

I am new to mac but also have fusion. I have the western digital ext hard drive and a back up genie to back up my fusion pc side and a seperate simpletech 1 tb ext hard drive configured for my mac. I also have a shared drive that i can save from side to side. With all this said i sometimes have the issue of not recognizing the western digital in my fusion pc side. Then all of sudden hours or a day later it will be there. It is not formatted for mac. Help, how do i get it recognized all the time.

  • I pod not recognized by Windows XP

I have an IPOD Touch 2nd generation.  I'm trying to connect it via USB to a WinXP box.  The USB port is enhanced, is operation, but does not detect the IPOD.  Any suggestions?

    See:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    I would start by:

    Does it charge?
I suspect that enhanced mean USB 2 port.

  • Creative Zen stone with speaker not recognized by Vista 32

My creative zen stone with speaker is not recognized by computer. Downloaded starter pack and it worked, but the first time i disconnected it and connected again, the device is not in "my computer". It is listed as working properly under "safely remove hardware". Uninstalled drivers, and connected again, driver was installed and I am told the device is ready to be used, but it is still no where to be seen, and update tools etc. also does not recognize connected device.
    thank you

Try going into "Control Panel->Administrati've tools" and clicking on "Computer Management". Find "disk management" in the left pane and click it. Your Stone should be in the right somewhere. I think you need to right click, then "choose dri've letter and paths" and give it a dri've letter with the "add" button. Let us know if that works.

  • 700w not recognized by Vista with windows mobile device center

    please help:
i have a treo 700w that doesn't want to consistently connect to machine I am working on. when it works (rarely), it works fine, when it doesn't there is no explanation. I have restarted both computer and phone, and I can't seem to get a connection made.
Further I tried to uninstall/reinstall the windows mobile device center, i have removed the sync profiles on both my computer and phone, but nothing is seeming to work. I find it interesting that vista recognized my Smartphone USB device (it shows in the device manager), but that windows mobile device center doesn't show that anything is connected.
I am connecting via USB, but would be happy to connect via bluetooth, but when i try that approach, it only offers headset/wireless stereo (i'm looking for calendar/contacts/etc).
any direction would be wonderful - i have searched in google and subsequent pages for an hour already, and I'm thinking someone must have a better way.
    Thanks,
    -cb
PS - for those who are forum administrators, the registration process sucks: the password limitations are oddly strong for a simple forum like this, and when you don't put in a proper password from the get-go, it clears your prior selection of device/os/agreement registration, so when you fix the red flags (the password) and submit, it (and only then) tells you that you've forgotten to answer the questions below (that you had already answered before you were thwarted by the password reqs). sigh.
Post relates to: Treo 700w (Verizon)

    Hi AlanG,
I have tried multiple USB connections, and do not have another sync cable. No luck.
Though, your post gave me an idea and that was to use a safety pin to scrape the contacts at the bottom of the phone. I keep the phone in my pocket most of the time, so there was some visible grime, though i would have guessed that the connection could have been made (it wasn't that grimy, just not shiny).
The other thing that was interesting is that when it was plugged in previous to the cleaning it shows the device connected to be a " smartphone usb sync ". Post cleaning, it now shows as a " PocketPC ". I'm not sure what the difference is, nor if I should be hoping that it reads "treo 700w", but hey, can't look a gift horse in the mouth, right?
So, that, in addition with removing all partnerships on both the machine and the treo (and after restarting my phone) it finally connected.
Wow. What a remarkable pain.  Let's hope it keeps working.
