I had my I pod classics stolen from my vehicle. I have the serial # ! Is there a way apple can tell if someone is using it illegally?

Movies cannot be played on an iPod nano. However, assuming you've just posted in the wrong forum see if anything here helps.

Wonder if anyone can help me, my i pod was stolen over the weekend, my sister has lent me an old one until i can buy myself another one, i plugged it into my work PC and deleted some of her music i didnt want, the only songs from my i pod on i tunes were ones i had added recently and my actual library wasnt on there? I used to always loads my songs on at my dads PC until i recently checked the add manual button on i tunes and now do it at work, I am worried i have lost my library now?

I'm curious as to what you mean by that. Did you normally keep a copy of all the songs on your stolen iPod on your work computer and now they're gone? Is that what you mean?
Or did you keep your iTunes library on your Dad's computer?
Having the iPod set to manual should not affect any of your music stored on a computer. Perhaps you could explain further?

Recovering from a stolen laptop.

Hi all,
I'm posting this on my wife's account, since she owns the iPod in question, yet I'm lumped with trying to fix the thing.
For the fourth time, we've been broken into and on this occasion lost the laptop to which her iPod (which was not stolen) was authorised and synchronised. So what we have now is the situation where we have an iPod full of content that we can't do a **** thing with.
So far I've done the following:
o Installed iTunes 9.0.2.25 on Windows 7,
o Authorised the iPod again with the original account,
o Synchronised the iStore content back into the Library (and this is the point of contention)
What I can't seem to do is to synchronise "all" content. This software only lets me bring back into the Library content that was purchased through the store. How on earth is this a practical solution? The majority of the content is from our cd collection and the likes, and it's not particularly practical to have to sit down ripping content for the next weeks to months ahead trying to reconstruct the library as it exists now on the iPod.
I'm aware that I can copy the content in its raw format from the iPod at the filesystem level, but I'm unsure if there's any value in this, since the directory and file naming structure is randomised. There wouldn't be much point in bringing a directory named "AszDg" back onto the computer. I'm assuming the filenames wouldn't be an issue, since they should contain metadata with the correct information in them. But if the directory name is used in something like the "Artist" column, then that's the kind of thing I'm concerned about.
Am I missing something, or is there no other option here except to let iTunes do as it suggests and wipe the entire iPod? So, in a nutshell, if you have either your laptop or pod stolen, thereby creating a decoupling of the authorisation process, does Apple leave you high and dry?

Are you saying you have reformatted a PC drive that is now connected or installed in your MBP or are you asking how to recover files on a reformatted drive in a PC? If the latter you would need to purchase recovery software that works on a PC. You cannot use OS X software to recover PC files on a PC formatted drive although you could give it a try. You would need recovery software for OS X:
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Much depends upon how you reformatted the drive. A standard full PC format (not a quick format) would render any data unrecoverable.

Also if i cant locate them can i at least remotely delete the libraries, and lock them so they are unusable to the thiefs, and i had a sony laptop worth £2000 stolen which I had used my apple account for a year is there anyway i can track that or retrieve the contents and delete them?

You or Apple can do nothing to prevent use of the devices.
For the iPod touch if you turned on the FindMyiPod feature and wifi is on and connected yu may be ablt ot locate it and wipe it by going to iCloud, signing in and going to FindMyiPhone. However, if the iPOd is rectored that feature is deleted.
Report to police and change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod.

The backup of your iPod Touch would include your camera roll photos. Restoring the backup to another iPod Touch or iPhone would recover them. Photos will not be restored by restoring the backup to an iPad.
Note: Apple deletes iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity so be sure to do this before then.

is there a data base somewhere, where you can input model numbers of stolen i-pods. I just got done doing a show at a hotel in NY, and one of the hotel staff went through our stuff and stole two i pods along with some other things. I know you have to sync them for them to work, and if there is a way for that to be disabled b/c of the i pod being stolen it would be great. They were both 30 gig I pod video's.

No there is no way for it to be disabled. Just report it to the police and the hotel management.

If you go to this page, you can click on the "Upload the serial number of my last connected iPod" button near the bottom of that page.
You can do this, as well:
1 - Open iTunes.
2 - Go to "Help > Run Diagnostics".
3 - Select "iPod Diagnostics", and click on "Next" to begin.
4 - When it is complete, scroll down to the bottom of the results. There will be a line that says: "The last connected iPod serial number: [serial number]"
