I-Pods & Airport  X-Rays

What's the advice regarding sending an I-Pod thru an Airport X-Ray Machine.....good/bad, does it matter or not, put it in a double layer film bag...turned on or off? Anyone have any experiance one way or the other?

As with any electronic device it's best to turn it off when sending it through an x-ray machine such as when going through airport security checkpoints.

  • Ipod crashes after going through airport x ray security

Every time after my 3rd generation ipod classic goes through the airport security x ray unit, and then I subsequently connect it to my Mini, the ipod crashes and I have to reset my ipod. Does anyone know why?

You would have to turn the iPad On. Don't believe it would hurt the iPad. The only problem might be that you would be setting the exposure in the lighted area & the Xray machine is probably dark inside.
But I would ask one of the TSA persons first. They might not allow it. They might not like the blinking red light.

  • Airport X-ray and my screen

So I've been searching through the posts on here for a while now while waiting for my flight, but I cant find anything to help me out. Obviously, I just went through all the security check-points, but after getting to my gate and turning on my 2 week old MBP the screen has a noticeable purple tint to it. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is or what I should do? Anything will be appreciated. Thanks

Have you checked that the correct color profile is being used in Display Preferences? I have never heard of x-rays causing any damage to LCD screens. And thousands upon thousands of them pass through the airport every day. If there was an issue, it would be well known by now.

  • Laptop went through airport xray, now screen is messed up! Help!

my G4 powerbook went though an LAX xray machine and now my screen is flickering with different colors. The porgrams and hardware work fine, its just that the screen keeps flickering and waving with different colors, primarily blue and purple. Someone told me to demagnitize the screen, but any other solutions would be helpful

Hi, Osegood. It's undoubtedly a coincidence that your screen happened to start acting up after going through the airport x-ray scanner. Many thousands of laptops go through x-ray scanners every day with no ill effects. That said, it does sound as though you have a hardware problem of some sort. If the display misbehavior persists even when you've started the PB up from a bootable CD (such as your Panther installer disk 1), then it is indeed a hardware fault rather than something software-based, and will probably require diagnosis and repair by a technician.

  • Shocks when going through airport security

I have noticed time after time that when I put my aluminum unibody McBP through the airport x-ray machine I get a whopping static shock when I touch the case on the other side. Is this damaging to the machine, and how can I prevent it? I have little enough hair as it is.

Do you have the computer resting on a case or sleeve or something? I googled "what comes out of x-rays?" and this page came up: http://www.ehow.com/about4678475what-radiation-comes-out-xrays.html
I looked at Wikipedia's page on electromagnetic radiation. Here is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_radiation
Could this possibly be the reason for the shocks? It sounds justifiable to me. I dunno though. I hope this helps.

  • IPod with stored Photos from vacation broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi all,
I'm destroyed... I was just returning from my two week holiday when I wanted to download the photos from my Ipod that I stored on the device during this time... But I got immediately that the device is not formated, and iTunes told me that the iPod needed to be restored (strangely the iPod Display looked normal), I disconnected the iPod and it immediately reset itself?!? Now it does not start anymore, I can see the Apple Logo for a few sec, can hear the HD spinning up then that the heads are being parked and the Game starts again....
HELP!!!! I'm afraid that I lost all of my vacation Photos! Since Apple does not provide a service to restore Data from broken iPods!?! Or do they?
I think that the many Airport X-Ray killed an IC of the iPod so it can no longer access its Boot Data...
Has anyone ever had a similar problem?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Rgds.

Your post tweaked my interest and for the past couple of hours the engineer in me went on a search and study of X-ray of airport scanners and the damage that they can or can not do. There are some very interesting (but dry as dust) articles on countless studies and it was surprising to find out that their are actually very few documented cases of consumer products being damaged by airport x-rays. In one failure anaylisis document they subjected a laptop to maximum x-ray under an airport scanner for three days and had no reported damage. In another study they took a very top of the line GPS and did the same test. Another article took several different i.c.'s and subjected them to max x-ray saturation for a prolonged time with no adverse reactions. There are a type of x-rays that can induce a voltage that can under extreme circumstances produce an induced voltage that can damage the device, but these are not in use at any airport that is known.
So the chances that your ipod was ruined (fried) by the airport xray is very slim to none. Not saying that it did not happen but would be very rare. The amount of laptops that are xrayed per hour at any airport would without any damage would seem to prove this. Thanks for the tweak, my brain needed this.

  • My iPhone 4S screen is going crazy

I bought my iPhone 4S 3 months ago. Since last week, after going under the airport X-rays, the screen is going crazy, either it freezes, or opens things randomly, or doesn't work on parts of the surface.
The problem is that I bought it sim-lock free in Madrid's Apple store, but now I live in Tunisia. The only support here is provided by the carrier (Orange Tunisie) is for the iPhones sold by them. I don't know what to do. I thought the warranty was a global one for the sim-lock free ones.
    PLEASE HELP!

Did you try to set it up as new device? How to back up your data and set up as a new device
And your device has to be officially unlocked, to work with other SIM cards.

  • MBA or iMac

    Hello.
I am buying my first Mac, but I'm not sure what to get; Macbook Air High End 11"(or even 13") or iMac 27" High End. I know these are not comparable, and I was wishing to buy iMac 'till now. And now I thought how cool it would be to have a small, quite powerful laptop. For example I could take it in bed with me (don't get me wrong ), in airplane, at the seaside, to my friend's place, etc. I travel, but not that much. Also I like games, so I would want it to play NFS World, Project Blackout, maybe even mw3, etc. I wouldn't get MPB, because I don't like it's resolution. And MBP retina is too expensive. Can you help me? I like iMac's big screen, and specs, but I like the smallness of MBA, and It's looks. Should I wait for 2013 MBA, I think it's possible they will get discrete graphics card, because I read somewhere Apple is importing new parts for new MBA's and MBP's. What do you think?

.... Also how long is the lifespan, and would the cooling pad help?
I don't know; all my Mac computers I ever bought from 1987 still work. As technology changes, they all become functionally obsolete at some point though. Exactly when that is depends on your needs.
I still use a G4 PowerBook regularly for iMovie and iDVD. It is more than fast enough for general computing work, email, iTunes, and basic Safari use, but forget about using it for streaming video. I have a smaller PowerBook that I used for travel a lot. It got sent through airport x-ray machines dozens of times, despite being manhandled by airport security goons it still works fine. That computer is over a decade old, older than even the original iPod. I prefer the larger 17 inch PowerBook for video work though.
Today I use my MacBook Air most of the time, probably because it is so light and easily carried to wherever I happen to be. I expect my newer MacBooks to last as long, but considering things like YouTube and FaceBook did not exist when I bought my G4 Powerbooks, who knows what I will want to do with them in the future.
I am not a gaming expert so I don't know how to advise you about that.

  • Effect of x-ray at airport on Fifth Generation i-pod

I am about to make a trip and was wondering if the x-ray at the airport will have any effect on my i-pod. It is so much like a computer that I am concerned with sending it through the x-ray machine. Anyone know if this would erase the memory or effect it any other way? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I'll be heading to Thailand tomorrow and will enjoy listening to my ipod while in flight (17 hours). Thanks again for giving me peace of mind.

  • How do I use my Airport Express with a Blu-ray player?

Hello, first post, long time lurker. Have a question, hope someone can help me
I have an Airport Express V 6.3, currently I have it set to 'Join a wireless network' and its connected wirelessly through a Netgear router that is located on the 1st floor, I'm on 3rd floor by the way. I've been using it for airtunes, but I recently received a Sony Blu-ray Player and would like to connect it the airport express via ethernet cable.
What do I have to set up on the airport express to be able to give the blu-ray player internet?
I've noticed many threads here about airport extreme connected to express...so they weren't too helpful

Welcome to the discussion area, mareithree!
You'll need the 802.11"n" version of the AirPort Express to be able to "Enable ethernet clients" and connect the DVD player. Unfortunately, your older version of the Express does not allow this type of feature.

  • How to connect my sony blue ray play to wifi via my airport utility?

how to connect my sony blue ray play to wifi via my airport utility?

The airport utility has nothing whatever to do with the sony bluray player.
The airport utility is to setup wireless in the airport.. once you setup wireless then you use the sony setup for wireless in the player as per its manual.
Please do keep the wireless names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
As well as pure alphanumeric passwords if you want to do this successfully.

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • What is the process for connecting ethernet.  Have ethernet cable connected to stereo received for internet radio and Blue Ray. However Network System Preferences indicates ethernet not connected and has red dot to left.  Note Airport wireless is working.

What is the process for connecting airport extreme ethernet?  I have ethernet cables connected to stereo receiver for internet radio and another to blue ray player.  The system preference network indicates "ethernet not connected" with red dot to left of this message.  The airport wireless works and has green dot to left of it.  The stereo receiver and blue ray player do not respond and give message not connect to internet.  Thank you.  /  cfpirate

It worked for me finally. I took out the DNS numbers in airport admin utility, and restarted the airport express. I do not remember putting the DNS numbers in, I wonder from where the airport express got those numbers.
    After restarting, it worked.
    Thanks!

  • Magnavox Blu Ray not connecting to Airport Express

I just got a new Blu Ray player. I use an Airport Express as my router. I can connect to it with my MacBook and so can my GF. I can connect with my Android phone. For some reason, I can't connect with my Blu-Ray player. Any advice?

Sorry, I was just trying to rule out other possibilities. Common connectivity problems arise when employing either or both a closed network or MAC filtering. Since you are using neither that eliminated those potential causes as well.
Since you have your network configured for 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) mode, the only other thing I can suggest is to change it to: 802.11b/g compatible. You would do this via the AirPort Utility.
(ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless > Radio Mode) Note: You will have to hold down the Option key before select the Radio Mode to get the additional mode options.
If the Blu-Ray can now connect, then the issue is the 802.11n implementation (is for some reason) incompatible with the player's wireless adapter.

  • Help with Connection Settings for Blu ray-to-Airport Express-to-TC?

I'm trying to use the network capability of my Sony Blu ray player and having no luck. I have the Blu ray connected via ethernet cable to the Airport Express, which in turn is connected wirelessly to my Time Capsule. The problem I'm having is horrendous because I'm so lame and no amount of forum or internet searching has helped.
The Blu ray network settings wants the following information:
    IP Address
    Subnet Mask
    Default Gateway
    DNS Server (Primary)
    DNS Server (Secondary)
Do I get these settings from System Preferences>Network>AirPort>Advanced or do I get them from either the Airport Express or Time Capsule using AirPort Utility?
I tried giving the Blu ray player a static IP Address in Time Capsule using DHCP Reservations and the Blu ray's MAC Address, but that's not working either. Between the AirPort Express, Time Capsule, cable modem, and MacBook Air there are numbers everywhere and I just don't which set to use.

I have tried most of the suggestions on these forums to get my Samsung connected to the airport express network but so far no luck. Anybody have success out there with step by step suggestions?
Are you trying to connect it to your AirPort Express wirelessly? (That's probably the case if your AirPort Express is your only Wi-Fi device, as its Ethernet port would be connected to your broadband modem.)
Is your AirPort Express "N"-capable? What type of encryption are you using on your network?
Have you installed the "supplied Wireless LAN Adapter"?
