As long as you are buying content for yourself (you can't use your account's balance for gifting) then it should have automatically used your balance for your purchase (there isn't a setting or anything that you can change on your account, it should be automatic). If it didn't do that (you still have a balance of $40 on your account, it wasn't just a temporary store holding charge on your credit card ?) then try contacting iTunes Support and see if they can help with why it happened : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

The money goes into you apple account, the account you sign intowtpith your apple ID
Sign in to the app store on your phone and buy the apps you want. You can also sign in from iTunes buy your apps then sync your phone using iTunes

If you have an existing ID, but no credit card to associate with your account, you'll have to redeem an iTunes gift card. If you don't want to do that, you'll have to create a NEW ID by following the directions here:

Anyway, does both phones being connected to the same apple id mean that when IMessage is used that we both get the same messages? IF both devices have the same Apple ID signed in ; it will believe the devices are meant to both recieve them. My biggest recommandation is you can create an email address for your daughter and in the future when she gets her own email address she can chang ethe primary email address to the up to date one.

If the total purchase price of the media including any applicable taxes or fees exceeds the balance of the redeemed card, then the difference is charged to your debit or credit card account.

I have a credit card on file in my I tunes account, but I have been using gift cards for years. iTunes has never hit my credit card if I had enough money on my account with the gift cards.
The money should be taken from your account, if you have sufficient funds in the account. If your purchase goes over the amount that you have in the account, the entire purchase will be put on your credit card, even if you are only pennies over the account balance.

I would say that the best way to ensure it's taking off of your gift card allowance (which I do believe it does automatically) is to just go into your itunes store settings and take your credit card off. When your gift card balance is out then you can put your Visa back on your account. Personally, I only use gift cards and don't put credit card info into my account for security purposes.
