I pulled the plug, did i damage my iMac?

After installing the latest security update 1.1 from my software update it seemed to go well until the restart. The screen went grey and the circle kept spinning and spinning. I tried to shut down using the button on rear but nothing, it just kept spinning. Finally I pulled the plug. I started it up again using the back button and it started fine. Installer log says the update is installed. I checked HD with disc utility from the install disc and repaired permissions which was OK except for the usual Suid warnings. My question is, did I do any damage to my machine by pulling the plug? Do I need to do any other maintenance to make sure all is well.

It all depends on what it was doing while the spinning was occurring.
There are a few issues that could come up.
Data in buffers may not have been sync'd to the disk. So depending on what that data was (update files, documents, etc.) it could be lost.
Permissions or access controls that were being applied could be missing or corrupted - but your repair of permissions should have taken care of that.
Files that were being uncompressed at the time may never have been uncompressed and you could end up with mixed up versions of files.
My recommendation would be to:
- Hold down 'command-v' when you boot this next time from right after the chime to when you start getting data on the screen. This will take away the screen masks when the system starts and stops.
- Re-apply the security update and let it finish. You'll be able to see what it's doing as it shuts down, so it should make things a little more comfortable than just watching the icon spin.
- If you are always impatient with updates, you may want to make verbose booting permanent. You can do this by editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and adding a -v between the two string tags under the kernel flags key.

  • MX922 hangs, power switch won't turn it off. Can I get it going without just pulling the plug?

The printer seems to do this to me about once a month. If I pull the plug and then reconnect it, that resets everything and gets the printer going again, but I get a nasty error message that I'm not supposed to do that. But what else can I do when absolutely none of the front panel buttons do anything at all? And the printer doesn't respond to any computer commands either.

    Hi williamauer,
If it appears that none of the buttons are stuck on the printer and an error message is not displaying and you are unable to turn off the printer normally, the printer may require servicing; please call or email us at one of the methods on the Contact Us page for further assistance.

  • Pulled the Plug on Time Capsule

First, I've been using Macs since 1987. Consider myself a bleeding edge adopter and semi-guru to friends and family. However, after a rocky start, a somewhat smooth few weeks, and now complete failure in the last few days I've pulled the plug on Time Capsule.
I had been backing up three laptops (Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook) with varying degrees of success (many TC re-sets, ethernet set-ups to start) until this evening when the dreaded "Preparing" hang eventually took its toll on my patience and my confidence in Apple's backup strategy.
Has anyone had success using TC with several laptops? Is TC set up for this? Is there some special order of events or sequence in setting this up that anyone has had consistent success with? For now I'm going back to SuperDuper.

I don't trust wireless TM 100% as well. I have turn off TM and only initiate the backup manually on my request. If I know the incremental back up is going to be huge, I will run a ethernet cable to the TC before I start.

Since I upgraded to OS 10.6.8 from 10.5.x my 2x3GHz quad-core Intel Xeon desktop spontaneously turns off as if I pulled the plug. Mostly it happens when there is no open software and it's in the sleep mode (because it spends more time like that), but it has happened while I'm working. It just suddenly quits.

This is a suspicious sign of power supply failure. I would have that checked into. Others who have had similar problems have had the power supplies replaced which fixed the issue.

  • Help! My iPhone keeps discontinuing its charge without me pulling the plug

Ok so just now, I was talking to my friend on kik while my phone was charging (and it's an iPhone 5 if you needed to know)and it kept making the sound when you plug the charger in and telling you it has successfully been plugged in. It was really irritating so I was watching the battery carefully, and usually when it's charging it has that "electric" symbol on the battery. For me, it kept re-appearing and disappearing, so I was thinking maybe I am pulling the plug but found out I wasn't. I have turned my phone off after that to avoid annoyance. If anybody knows how to fix this please respond!
(Oh and note that I've checked my cables and wires and chargers and it is perfectly fine, unless I didn't check right..)
    Thanks a bunch!
EDIT: Not raging or being rude or anything, but this is kind of serious to me if you have something off-topic to say, please say it somewhere else as it ain't gonna help my problem.

That sound when you plugged in to charge is normal.

  • Pulling the plug on dbms_job

    Hi there
I was wondering what would happen to the jobs which were "running" under dbms_job should someone pull the plug out of the machine.
Would they be restarted once the database went up again? I am uncertain since I figured that the jobs table would not be updated following a sudden power failure.
    Thanks in advance

Laurence, I believe that dbms_jobs includes a retry feature. What Oracle would do on restart with failed jobs would depend in part on what was set via dbms_job to do on job failure for each job.
See the Supplied PL/SQL Packages and Types manual for your version for details.

  • Arch refuses to shutdown, need to pull the plug!

I've been on Arch since 3days now. When installed for the first time I installed SLiM, so that I can have a graphical user interface on the log on screen. But I uninstalled it. I've Xfce. The computer shut down properly for a few times. Since yesterday when I press the shut down button in the upper right corner in Xfce some coded screen comes up it says,
    > POWER OFF
after this it would shut off automatically.
    But now it says,
    > POWER OFF
    [  45656.5984714] Power down.
And it stays there forever.  I have to physically pull the power plug or shut off the main power button. I've ACPI turned ON and is in S1 State.
Please suggest how do I resolve this problem. Help would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance.

meph wrote:Are you using networkmanager by any chance? Try omitting it from your rc.conf if you do and see if it makes any difference after a reboot. A few days back I've had the same problem, which was strangely caused by networkmanager, switching to wicd solved it completely.
I tried this. But no luck. Still the same problem.
    btw, my rc.conf reads,
DAEMONS=(hwclock syslog-ng dbus networkmanager netfs crond)
One more thing. This problem not only occurs when I'm running Xfce. The system wont shutdown even when I login and then try to shut it down with sudo poweroff command, on the command line.

  • Reduced internet speed after a few hours. Requires pulling the plug

Can anyone help me out? i just got WRT54GS V7. Everything works fine except after several hours my internet connection would slow down eventually forcing me to pull the power. Everything works fine after i turn it back on. I upgraded the firmware and everything. This computer is wired to the router so I don't even know what the problem is.

You mentioned that you upgraded the firmware.  After the firmware upgrade, did you reset the router to factory defaults (using the reset button) ?  If not, reset your router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
If you do not reset to factory defaults, some of your router variables may not be properly initialized, and this could cause the problem that you are having.

  • Did Creative pull the plug entirely on E-mu? (sure looks that way)

I just purchased a 22M PCIe ~ week ago. The E-Mu site is no longer available and the phone #'s disconnected.
Is this how E-Mu's parent company operates? No redirect, no canned message at the listed E-mu #'s. But sure as the summer is hot, you can still see E-Mu product for sale on the Creative website along with links (that don't work) to the E-Mu website(s).
    Really?
Hopefully an official rep can answer.

I did. The website was down and the phone # is disconnected. Couple that with:

    4. Call the corporate office phone # listed for EMU. Let everyone know what recording you get
It was, at that point in time, a fair question (and still is to a good degree) to ask.
There is a buzz about E-Mu's solvency with nary a word in 8 months. Troubling to say the least. There are a bunch of people waiting for the other shoe to drop.

  • Itunes locks up my PC when it starts. It tries to access the store and then the computer freezes and I have to pull the plug. Help!

I am running Windows XP and I have an iPhone 4, but ever since 5 days ago I cannot even open up iTunes without it freezing my PC.  This happens with our without the phone plugged in. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes in the correct order and still it is happening.  Can anyone help with what might have changed in my PC settings?  TIA

You could try wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS and all your programs.
Did you install any programs yesterday?
If not it may be best to take it to an Apple care center and have it checked out. Take it in while it is asleep so you ccan show then what is happening.

  • Pulling the plug on socket programming

Hi i have a issue with my client-to-server app. When the client is connected to the server an I for instance kill the client process abruptly the server can still register that the client has died which is great. I think this is due to the TCP/IP protocol sending out a final message when the connection is terminated which the server picks up.
However if I on the other hand just pull out the network cable on the client side the sever never get that the client has disconnected. Is there a way for the server to check if the other end of a socket, e.i., the client, is still avalible? Or do i need to implement some feature that keeps asking the client if its still there?
    Thanks / MTy

  • Had to pull the plug!

Rotten intermittent connections this afternoon with BB and fetching pages etc. This allied with difficulty and slowness accessing my BT Homehub3 caused me to decide to reset or restart my HH3 by pressing the appropriate button.
I held the button for a few moments/seconds but this did nothing and so turned the hub off for about 30 seconds. Upon re-starting everything seems to be resolved except that my BB speed has dropped to about 12.5Mbps and the noise levels are slightly higher than before.
Presumably things will improve with the S/N ratio over the next few days providing I am patient etc. I can now access the hub again virtually instantly and check the stats.

your connection speed is now 14.31mb and noise margin higher than normal at 11.3db but you have a lot of errors for only 17hrs connected.  it may be that a chnage to interleaved will help your connection especially at night when errors increase and probably affect your throughput
given a stable connection your noise margin should come down to normal 6db
