I purchased a Seagate 3T HD for my MacBook Pro but only Windows are listed on the box (the Seagate site listed Mac) will it work???

Most external drives are formatted for Windows; you should be able to format it for Mac. Plug it in, open Disk utility, highlight the drive and choose the Partition tab. Do not worry about any software on the drive - you don't need it and it will be erased. In the partition tab, choose how many you want, name them, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, under the Options button, choose GUID partition scheme. Hit Apply. The drive will be erased and formatted. If that process does not work, contact Seagate and inquire about the Mac compatibility.

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

  • Correct Drivers For Ethernet MacBook Pro Late 2008 Windows XP on BootCamp

    Hi;
I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro running OSC 10.5.8. When I first got it I setup a dual boot with Win XP using Bootcamp.
The problem I have is that the Ethernet NIC port has stopped working and has a yellow exclamation in SYSTEM (its fine in OSX). I have uninstalled it but cannot install the drivers as I do not know what to install.
In SYSTEM HARDWARE it was listed as nForce but I do not know which version of nForce chipset is used in the MacBok Pro. Someone has mentioned upgrading Bootcamp but I do not know which version I currently have and it has also been suggested to simply re-use the drivers from the original install CD, I have them but cannot see where to get the drivers from.
    Any help would be great.
    Ta

I'm looking into running Windows 7 64bit on the exact same MBP you have, so I'm curious as to whether or not you've found a solution yet outside of the forums.
Do you think it might be that the bootcamp 3.1 update is only for Windows 7 32bit and not for the 64bit version?

  • I want to set up Time Machine for my Macbook pro but I already have files on my seagate hard drive. Will i lose them if i set up time machine on it ?

So i have a 2 TB Seagate time machine. I had an older laptop that I had transfered things from onto that about 2 years ago. My current macbook has been acting up so i want to set up time machine. Will i lose everything on the hard drive if i try to set it up as time machine now?
I read about partioning it.. but Im still scared i will lose what is  on it?
My macbook is about 2 years old running OS.X 10.9.1
    Please advise.

Partitoning can be done on the fly.
However TimeMachine works best if it is Partition 1.
If you formate and repartition then yes you lose everything.
    How about getting another drive.

  • PLEASE in Heavens name can someone tell me where I can purchase a Empower Airline adaptor for my MACBook Pro (2010 model) in AUSTRALIA?

I'm so 'over' the mis-match of info - great info from the US but NOTHING in Australia and no stockists and/or conflicting information.
All I want to do is get power to my MacBook Pro on the flight - which Virgin has advised me its an Empower connector.
    ANYONE?  PLEASE ANYONE?

    Hutch111,
if you have a 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, you can get a MagSafe-to-emPower adapter in Australia from here. Since there’s a 75 W maximum through emPower receptacles, I’m not sure how well it would work with a 15-inch or 17-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, since their AC adapters provide 85 W.

  • Why is it taking forever for my MacBook pro to start up?

It is taking forever for my MacBook pro to start up. It's been on the screen with the grey apple and the spinning icon for about 20 minutes now. I tried holding down the shift button when powering up to reboot in safe mood but that is taking forever as well. Any suggestions?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Dual monitors for my macbook pro

I want to use dual monitors for my macbook pro but I am getting mixed answers as to if that is possible. I want to use just the two monitors, so basically I am thinking I will plug my macbook into the monitors, close my macbook and use a blue tooth mouse and keyboard on the two monitors. I want to know if that is possible. Also, I am wondering about the adapters. I know that one end should be the thunderbolt and then the other end will have whatever the monitor needs (DVI/VGA) but all the adapters I see only have one place to plug a monitor in, and I will be need two.

    It is possible.
I currently use a thunderbolt to vga adaptor and a usb to vga adaptor to run two independent monitors.
However, the usb to vga adaptor is not great.  I'm using an Eclipse See2 UV159 but the screen does not come out as good as the thunderbolt to vga adaptor.
I'm currently looking for a better adaptor.

  • HT1338 I am trying to download java onto my macbook pro, but for some reason this function isn't recognizing the internet.  The error message insists that I am not connected but I am.  I have tried this through both safari and firefox

Sorry I didn't realize the above was just a subject line.
I have been trying to download java for my macbook pro, but for some reason the function is not recognizing the internet.  I am on and have checked several times .... I have checked through both safari and firefox but to no avail.  Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Not really a reply just some added info:
This is the error message I get saying the internet is not on, but clearly as I can send this message it has to be:
To open “Java Preferences,” you need to install a Java runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet.
I am connected through Wi-fi if that makes a difference.

Check this site for parts and prices:

You can always ask at the Genius Bar at your local Apple store, or inquire at an Authorized Apple Repair facility. The price usually depends on the age of your machine and the availability of the part.

  • Im thinking about buying OWC ram for my macbook pro.

Im thinking about buying OWC ram for my macbook pro but dont know if it will have negative affects on my computer, should i do it?

Only if you install it wrong or use the wrong RAM.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Use the free Crucil.com checker to doublecheck if you need too.
You don't want Apple to do it, they quoted me $435 to upgrade $70 worth of RAM.
Do it yourself or have a local geek friend (PC or Mac) do it, it's not hard, unles you got bad eyesight and can't see the tiny screws. Use a catch mat, follow proper anti-static and handling. (touch only plastic)
Break something inside, your on your own though. No warranty coverqge or AppleCare for self inflicted damage.

  • Choosing a DISPLAY for my Macbook Pro

In the need to be more mobile, I am going to be selling my iMac for a Macbook Pro. Only thing is I don't want to sacrafice screen size in exchange, so I would like to have a decently similar size display as my iMac right now when working at home on my desk.
So I'm looking to get a display along with my Macbook Pro, obviously the first apparent option is the apple cinema displays. But my question is are there off-brand monitors (i.e. LED displays from Sony, Samsung, Vizio, et cetera..) that would do the job. Because for the price of the apple display, I could get a much larger off-brand one.
I don't want to sacrafice display quality or pixel clarity though. I also am not sure if those off-brand displays have slight video lag? For example, when audio is sync'd with video, or when playing a game?
If there is anyone who has dealt with this issue and could provide me with some beneficial feedback, please let me know!

Third party screens work just fine, and you can get anti-glare models too, so your not fighting reflections like on the Apple ones.
You'll have to search online for computer monitor compairions and choose one that's best for you in price, size and affordability.
Apple has all sorts of adaptors for their video ports, so do your research there and the video OUT capability of the MacBook Pro your deciding on.
I HIGHLY suggest the 2.2 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro or higher, as this has the RADEON 6750M video card which can pump out more pixels to your external monitor.
Anti-glare on the MacBook Pro is also recommended as it's a portable device and you can't control the enviroment everywhere you go to reduce the reflections on the screen.
    Good Luck
