  • I'm having a problem replacing the hard drive and restoring from a back up!

I only recently upgraded my 2007 (white) MackBook from Leopard to Snow Leopard so I could install the latest version of iTunes and sync my iPhone 5. I borrowed the discs from someone at work (because it's difficult to purchase them form Apple) and this worked fine and I've been happily using it since September. I use Time Machine to back up to an external hard drive which has always worked really well for me.
I'm now trying to change the internal hard drive (as the old one is full) but to boot up and format the new disc I need the Leopard boot discs that came with my laptop. I did this fine then tried to restore from a Time Machine backup and again all looked ok and after 3-4 hours it said it was complete and to reboot.
I rebooted and now everytime it boots up it comes up with the error (see attached)
I'm not 100% sure why it's doing this but I have a feeling it's because my Time Machine back ups are now for Snow Leopard and my original boot discs are Leopard. I could probably get hold of the SL upgrade disc again but I will need to borrow them again which could be a little difficult.
I have now put the old Hard Drive back into the laptop and it's working fine again but I need to work out what to do here.
Please please please can someone help
    Many thanks
    Phil Thomas

Huh!! Why couldn't I find this a few months ago? When searching on the Apple site it would only come up with options to upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion. I even spoke to people of some forums and no one else could find it either. That's why I ended up borrowing a copy because it appeared to be the simplest option. I wonder if this has been made available again since the iPhone 5 launch as I know several people who couldn't upgrade to the newer versions of iTunes.
For £14 quid I'll just buy my own copy.
    Thanks for your help Mike

  • If I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web and now wish to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings to sell.  How do I accomplish this?

I upgraded the operating system on my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web.  Now I need to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings, so that I can pass it on.  How do I accomplish this?  When I insert the Mac OS X install disk, the only option is to erase the free space.  Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thank you

You need to boot off the original Snow Leopard DVD's that came with the system.
Once you are running off of the DVD you will be able to do a clean install of SL
To boot off the DVD with the system up running Lion insert the DVD. Open Sytem Preferences->Startup Disk and select the DVD then restart the machine.

I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason.  At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups.  At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

  • I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things.  And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad.  Here's the info on my IMac:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac6,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          3 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM61.0093.B07
      SMC Version (system):          1.10f2

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew
Why do you feel you need to do this? That is such a 'Windows thing' to do!
And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad
Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

  • Hi, i've just got a problem with my macbook pro: I bought it two years ago and suddenly, it stopped working. Im freaking out. No answer from the people hwo suposed to know about these problems. Any tip??

    Help!
i had a problem with my macbook pro: on tuesday 16th (agoust, 2011) I went to a friend's house and show her some document i had in my computer, then i turned off my mac and it asked me: "there are some actualizations available, do you want to update before turn off?" i clicked on yes, waited for update and then the macbook turned off. When I got back home, I tried to turn it on again.... but nothing: it didn't sound baaaammmmm as allways, it didn't reacted. I tried again, but useless.
The next day i went to one of these "authorized management centers", but they coudn't say anything or do anything about it. First they told me the problem was the battery, then the hard disk, then the video card... but don't. I left my mac there by two weeks, hoping they could help me, but they didn't. So I picked it up and go to other place.
The rare thing is that i have just two years with my mac, and i didn't do anything stupid on it (didn't fall, get wet, microwave, hot, shocked, hit or anything) It just stopped working. Two times it turned on. But if not, it's the same story:
When i pushed the button to turn on, sounds like baaaaaammmm, but then again, and again, and again, and the screen doesn't get blue or anything, it appears a foder with a "?" and then the computer turns off...
Im wondering if this is a problem on this computers, because some of my friends told me things much like that that happened with their macbooks.
What's going on??? why this is happening?? cn you help me?

This article may help: A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac.

  • How can I wipe my hard drive and restore to factory settings without the use of the original OS CD?

I have a 2010 MacBook and I need to wipe the hard drive and restore to factory settings.
The problem is that even though I have the original disc, the CD drive has stopped functioning and will reject any disc put into it.
Therefore, is there another method to do this without the CD?

Not very easily.  To restore to factory software you need the original installation DVD (CDs).
If you have another Mac which is the same make and model so that those installation DVD (CDs) would work, you can use a Firewire cable between the 2 Macs and then put your Mac to be reset into Target mode and use the other Mac to install the software.  However I suspect that is unlikely.

  • My 2009 MacBook Pro keeps restarting even after I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OSX.

About a month ago, my laptop started to randomly turn off: I would be using either Chrome, Photoshop (the free CS2 version available from Adobe's website) or Powerpoint, and the screen would go blank. I would then have to hold the power button for a while until the little light at the front of the computer would flicker and it would restart. I brought it to the Mac Store where they tested it and said it looked fine. They suggested I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX as a precaution.
Fast forward a month, I have been very busy with work and hadn't been able to fix this problem. It wasn't that bad, only once every couple of days, sometimes more, sometimes less, I could work despite this problem.
Then, I installed OSX Mavericks. The installation started in the morning, but, like an idiot, I paused it to go to work. Later on, I completed the installation, it looked fine, but then all day long my laptop would suddenly restart and go to a grey screen that said in multiple languages "Your laptop restarted because of a problem, press any button to continue the restart." A computer technician friend of mine checked it out and said it was probably due to the badly installed OSX and suggested that I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX.
I backed up all my files, erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. Everything looked fine.
    Then it happened again.
Any ideas of why this is happening?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I have a 1st Gen Time Capsule 1tb. It turns on, boots up and turns green for 5-10 mins, but then turns solid orange and then blinks orange.  I have removed the hard drive and replaced the power supply . . . still the same problem.  Suggestions?

I purchased a used 1st Gen Time Capsule with a 1 tb hard drive.
When I plugged it in and did the initial setup, it worked fine, but gave me a hard drive error.  A few minutes later the green light turned solid orange, then blinking orange, then the status light went off.  The lights in back stayed on.
I removed the hard drive and rebooted, it turned green for 5-10 minutes then reverted back to a solid orange, blinking orange, then went off.
Next I purchased a remanufactured internal power supply, and installed it (without the hard drive in).  It turned green almost immediately.  After about 15-20 minutes, I decided to try to install the hard drive again, booted it up, and tried to erase the hard drive with was working properly according to the software.  It stopped erasing the disc after about 20 minutes and turned solid orange again, then blinking, then no status light  (but back lights were still lit).
I'm a bit flabbergasted at this point, any suggestions on what to do next?  I think i've pretty much replaced everything except the logic board, but can't seem to find any information on the symptoms of a logic board malfunction.
    Thanks!!!!!!!

A Gen3 is identical board to a Gen4 although they have some differences in firmware and wireless card was updated on every model.. but a Gen3 is substantially faster than Gen1, Gen2 which also have identical boards.
You can with careful shopping get a Gen3 pretty cheap.
Most use a delta power supply which I think is a lot better than the flextronics used in most Gen1/2
You can sell back the parts to ebay.. people still would buy the power supply etc. Even just the case can be useful to a repairer.
But if the board is gone.. it is hard to repair.. not impossible.. but hard.
Gen 3 and Gen 4 are not without faults.
    See this page.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
I have fixed it a different way.. by using the small converters you can buy in bulk from ebay for $1 each.. KIS3R33 .. they produce 3.3V at 2A peaking at 3A.. amazing.. I keep using them to replace onboard power converters by removing the inductor and simply power directly.. the end result has worked great. You can simply change the resistors around and get any output from 1v to 20v depending on input.
Is it worth doing it .. no of course not.. it will waste many more hours than $50 is worth.. but it is kind of fun that you can actually make things work again.
Here is a pic of the Gen 3 totally powered by me. All onboard power removed.
This was to track down the fault in the Gen3.. but I am kind of pleased that it ended up neat enough and reliable enough to work for more than a year.. the Gen3 still serves as a way to get Netflix via network for a friend running 24/7.
The units supply (from left to right)
    1v, 1.1v, 3.3v, 5v, 1.8v
It is feed by 12v supply which is also directly connected to the hard disk.
So it is possible to fix.. !! Only got to be a bit crazy.

  • My MacBook pro motherboard needs replacing (expensive!!), would I be able to remove the hard drive and have it put into my partners MacBook air?

My MacBook pro would not boot up, took to genius bar and tech tried everything to boot up, but no luck, he says it looks like main board has gone, It would cost £750!! He said if I wanted to purchase a new mac, they could transfer my hard drive to the new mac. My partner has a MacBook air, which they hardly use, so I was wondering if the techs would be able to transfer my hard drive from the pro to the MacBook air? Any advise would be appreciated

Not the Hard Drive itself! In the MacBook (Pro) you have 2.5" hard drives, and in the MacBook Air there are 1.8" (the older once) or special form factors SSDs (MacBook Air 2011). So the hard drive quite bigger in your MBP.
But the data could be transferred to the MacBook Air with an external enclosure, if the hard drive in the MacBook Air is big enough.

  • Can't open any of the software-he

I've uninstalled reinstalled 3 or 4 times tonight. The problem is that none of my software will open. I try to open the EAX console and windows says it encounters a problem. Something like "error sig, app name: ctcms.exe..." I get the same error message when I try to open any of the other menus as well.
Sound plays, but not very well. I just can't open any of the menus to tweak the options. When I ran the diagnostics, everything checked out except my soundfont. I'm at a total loss on what to do, any ideas?

After turning my sound up really high I discovered the bass does in fact put out sound. However it is also dependent on the rear speaker volume, just like the center speaker. If I turn the volume to 0 for all the speakers and turn the center speaker and sub volume up there is no sound. When I turn the rear speaker volume up, the center speaker plays and I can tell sound is coming out of the sub. However the sub is very quiet compared to the rest of the speakers, I can only tell it is working by holding my hand in front of it and felling the small vibrations. A month ago it was bumpin and thumpin just fine...
This is so frustrating, if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate em, thanks

I ordered the full creative cloud on sunday and received an order number but still can't open any of the programs. When i check the status of my order online, it says it can't find it. Is this normal after 3 days? I tried asking in a chat window instead of the forum but no one answered and after about ten minutes my screen restarted and closed the chat window down. It seems a little frustrating not knowing what happened to my order and not being able to contact anyone. Is all this usual with Adobe or are they just having technical problems this week?

There are any number of possibilies... you could have problems with runaway applications, causing your machine to overheat and setting the fans off, you could have bad fan sensors, etc.
Open Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) and see if you have any apps that may be hogging the CPU. Call back.

Where do I find this library?

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.
