I purchased mountain lion from apple but never got a disk. How do I install it on my new hard drive, old hard drive failed and is not recoverable according to Apple and Recovery Specialist?

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with newly installed SATA HD + SSD, I can get mavericks download free but I can't recover photos, apps, files etc from time machine (1TB Time Capsule), I think I was running lion when I started backing up on it but I had updated to mavericks before the HD Failure. When I tried to transfer info from Time Capsule it says " no volumes detected" or something to that effect. I had mucho info backed up on that capsule. Any help appreciated, please spell it all out for me if you can help, I am not at all tech savvy and desperate to get up and going as I am an online student with a fast approaching deadline for course paper. Thank you in advance :)

Step 1: Buy a new Hard drive that can be installed in your MacBook Pro later, and an External enclose to place it in for now.
The MacBook Pro before 2010 can not contain the stand-alone firmware to go to the Internet and get a fresh copy of Mac OS X and install it.
You will need a working Recovery_HD, or to drop back to a 10.6 DVD (if it will Boot on your Mac).
There may be a functioning Recovery_HD on your existing Boot Drive. If you were running 10.7.4 or later and Time Machine, there may be a Recovery_HD on the Time Machine Volume.
To check:
Hold down the Alt/Option key as you restart. This will slowly draw a gray screen and then add an Icon (over several minutes) for each potentially-bootable volume. If any Recovery_HD shows up, take it, and you will be able to get to Internet Recovery and re-download some version of Mac OS X that can be installed on a new drive.
It is generally far quicker to set up a new drive and install Mac OS X than to struggle with only the primitive tools available only on a DVD or a Recovery_HD. Once you get any version of Mac OS X running, you can get some work done and attempt to salvage first your data, then your drive (if either will be possible).
By NOT trying to Boot from and use the possibly-damaged drive, you improve your chances of being able to salvage some files off it, since blocks will not be over-written by running Mac OS X from it.

You will still be able to recieve updates I would think, but if you need to reinstall you may well have to use your friends Apple ID to sign in again. Hopefully your friend isn't using the same copy of Mountain Lion as well, or therein starts the complications, as you should have a copy each. A ML download can be used on as many computers as YOU own, but you cannot share it around with others.

If you go to System Preferences > Network do you see other networks listed on the left panel?  Is the lock in the lower left corner closed?  If not, highlight your network, then close the lock so you block other networks.

  • I purchased Mountain Lion online from the App store but it won't download

I purchased Mountain Lion from the App Store, and after 2 days it still hasn't downloaded. The download appears to have frozen.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, restart your Mac and resume the download. To resume the download, open App Store > Purchases, and press the Resume button next to OS X Mountain Lion.
If it doesn't work, open Finder, go to Applications folder and delete the OS X Mountain Lion installer. Then, open App Store > Purchases, and download Mountain Lion again

  • HT1338 i have a really old mac book with mac osx 10.6 and I cant purchase mountain lion in the app store. it says its not compatible with this computer. what can i do

I have been trying to purchase mountain lion from the app store and it doesnt let me. I keep getting mobile me in the system preferences and i want to upgrade so i can link this mac book with my icloud account and devices. How can I uograde to mountain lion?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest models capable of running 10.8:
    iMac7,1
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
    Macmini3,1
    MacPro3,1
    Xserve3,1
If your computer is incapable of running 10.8 but has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and at least 2GB RAM, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion.

  • I recently purchased mountain lion, but i could not update it is showing 102 error

i have purchased mountain lion on line, but i could not up date, it shows error102,after 3to 4 hours download

You have a corrupted old system. At the very least you need to repair the hard drive and permissions before trying to install Mountain Lion. However, this my not be sufficient. You may need to reinstall your old system before trying to install Mountain Lion.
Of course it would be more useful were you to provide the full information on the error message and what OS X version you currently have installed. Also check that you can install Mountain Lion on your model:
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)

  • I have purchased Mountain Lion to correct the gray cursor square problem, and I cannot get Mountain lion to download

I purchased Mountain Lion from 10.7.5 on my Imac to correct the gray cursor square problem, now Mountain Lion will not fully download. Any recommendations?

Upgrading to a newer OS X does not often correct pre existing problems. MIght be a disk space issue, or the startup disk needs repairing.
Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click Get Info.
In the Get Info pane you will see:  Capacity & Available
Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.
For the gray cursor issuee, startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient. Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple menu.
If that didn't help the cursor issue, launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Click:  Verify Disk
If Disk Utility reports errors, since v10.7 Lion is the currently installed OS, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access OS X: About OS X Recovery.
From there you can access the built in utilities to repair the startup disk.

  • How do I upgrade to Mountain lion from 10.5.8?

So it seems as though this is going to be a major hassle. My java has corrupted and the only way to get it to work again is to upgrade my system.
(I know that this is the only way because I have tried everything imaginable and after trying everything imaginable, I went to the apple store and the rep told me the only way to fix the problem is to upgrade my OS because apple no longer offers patches for 10.5.) BTW, 10.5.8 does not have the App store.. which seems to be where I am running into all of my problems.
Since I have to upgrade my system, I want to go ahead and upgrade it to the most recent OS (which is mountain lion). It seems like the only way to do this is to buy snow leapord (which is no longer offered by apple) and then to purchase mountain lion from the app store. So now my problem is where to buy snow leapord? Well it seems like amazon and a number of other non apple retailers offer it for $100+ which is absolutely rediculous for an OS that used to cost $19.99 when it came out.
So I guess my real question is, can I buy the mountain lion OS on a usb flash drive and just bypass having to buy snow leapord? I know its not out on the flash drive yet, but will it eventually come out on the flash drive? If not, can I just buy lion on the USB and bypass having to buy snow leapord? Or has apple found a way to make me spend unnecessary money on a system that I will not use because I am just going to buy their more recent system?
I appreciate any and all help as I am seemingly at an impass (unless I want to spend in excess of $130 just to get a $30 OS).

Those are all questions for Apple to answer and I'm sorry do not have anything to do with Pages.
There are several alternatives. Apple did have Lion on a USB flash drive, you could try installing that then using the M.A.S. to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
When you install Lion/Mountain Lion btw, make sure you back up the installer to use directly in the future. There are several guides how to do that online.

  • No purchased Mountain Lion in Appstore with new Macbook Pro

    Hi there,
I purchased a brand new Apple 13" Macbook Pro-3rd i5-2.5ghz two days ago. Now wanting to install an SSD drive i'm preparing by getting my OSX onto an external drive to make a clean install onto the new SSD.
The Macbook came with 10.8.4 pre-installed, which I updated to 10.8.5, flawlessly. So, Mountain Lion pre-installed and updated, good.
Now that I want to get Mountain Lion onto an external drive for when I go for the clean install on the SSD, I start looking for it in the appstore under my purchased apps: Mountain Lion nowhere to be found.
I Google the problem: "Mountain Lion OSX not showing as purchased in Appstore"
Same apple id used? Yes I did.
"It's probably under your hidden purchases, check your account and show hidden purchases!" No it's not there as well.
If I search the market for Mountain Lion it shows up... with a nice pricetag of 17,99 euros.
How is this possible? I registered my Apple ID correctly, was able to update to 10.8.5 just fine, but the Mountain Lion OSX still appears as un-purchased in the Appstore, which is not letting me download it (for free..)
    Suggestions?
    Best regards,
    Sylvain

Thank you for your clear answer! All the answers from Google I found apparently came from people that purchased Mountain Lion from the App Store instead of having it pre-installed, which got me confused.
I purchased the Macbook new from an authorised reseller, not directly from an Apple Store. However the store is pretty big and common in Holland (www.dixons.nl) so that won't be an issue.
So you're saying I can simple put the SSD in, boot with command+R while being connected to the internet and install through the recovery partition directly of the internet.
Seems like a very easy system, I guess i'm just used to old fashion having the operating system on an external drive or cd in order to make a clean install.
*Will it be a problem to leave the original HDD in alongside with the new SSD? I guess in the boot menu you can choose what to do with each drive?
I will be using the original 500gig HDD for storage, simply installing the SSD in order to boost he performance of the Macbook.

  • Creating my own Fusion Drive: Do I need to buy Mountain Lion from the app store to reinstall the OS? Do I lose the iLife apps?

I just bought a Mac Mini (late 2012) with a 1TB HDD and I'm planning to install a second drive, an SSD (Samsung 840 evo) and create the Fusion Drive, and I have a couple of questions:
1- I've read lots of articles on how to do this but I'm not sure if I have to buy Mountain Lion from the app store (to reinstall the OS after I install the second drive) since I'm not able to see it on the "Purchased" list of apps, or if I can just reinstall OS X with OS X Utilities.
2- I read somewhere that if I make my own Fusion Drive when I reinstall OS X I will lose iLife, is this true? Or will I be able to redownload it from the store? I really don't want to lose iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand and I'm confused about it.
Thanks in advance for any help and information you can give me!

Thankyou very much lllaass, that's exactly what I wanted to be sure about!

Purchased Mountain Lion from Apps Store - but it will not havedoIwnload. The Icon just appears and it says " waiting " for an hour or so and does nothing?

Yes as long as these are both your computers. Transfer target disk mode, USB flash drive, external HD, DVD, Dropbox, etc
Are the computer close by and portable or at a distance??  This might dictate how you move your download.
