I have looked at multiple websites; they all have the same instructions for putting your IPhone into recovery mode using ITunes.
My computer was not downloading ITunes before, but I recently made it work. I turned my phone off, held the home button, plugged in the phone to the computer with ITunes already up. The little USB cord and ITunes logo showed up. The instructions said that a popup would say that ITunes had 'detected and IPhone in recovery mode', and from there I would be able to reset my phone. However, the popup never happens. I have tried this several times, and it's the same: I see the USB cable and ITunes logo on my phone screen, and in the corner of ITunes, a picture comes up of a phone with a little 'X' next to it. I clicked on the phone, on the X, but nothing works. The popup just never shows. I am unable to reset my IPhone because of it. I have not found any other way for me to reset my phone, since I didn't activate Find My Phone or ICloud.
There is no icloud on an iphone 3, because you need IOS 5.0 or higher, the highest IOS is 4.2.1

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • IOS 5 update forced ipod touch into recovery mode which I can't get it out of! Help please!

Hi, I recently updated my ipod touch 3rd gen to ios5 (as prompted by itunes - assumed a standard software update). Immediately afterwards, my ipod went into recovery mode, and initially itunes recognised this and tried to restore it unsuccessfully. Not any more! Now it is either off, or displays the 'connect to itunes' logo when I connect it to the computer via USB lead.
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing itunes but this hasn't helped it recognise the ipod.
I don't think I've managed to go 3 months without having to do something like reinstall the drivers etc on this ipod, don't know why i expected this update to be any different!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance!

Try disabling all security software and firewalls, then try again.
Or try from a different computer.
This error is a pain in the butt and a new issue, too. I'm sorry.

  • My Iphone is in Restore Mode and I can't get it back to functional.

On Friday, I plugged my Iphone into my computer at work and it asked me to update the software. Well, my Iphone was set- up on my home computer but like an idiot I updated it at work now my Iphone is in restore mode and I can't get it working again. I removed all the Itunes programs and Safari and then reistalled them but it did not work. Can anyone tell me what to try now? I'm a step from going into an Apple Store for help.

    Thank you, King_Penquin,
It worked! I have just copied and pasted your instructions to a Word doc to keep for future reference in case it happens again.  I am so grateful for you and others who post answers to our questions.  By doing so, you become a blessing to those of us who are beginning to get frustrated because of the waste of time, or in some cases, maybe loss of work.
    Bless you, and Merry Christmas

  • Forcing Ipod classic into disc mode, this helped me fix my 80g classic.

Nobody had an answer for my 80g classic that couldnt be unmounted. I found on a blog somewhere that if you press Menu and the center key until the apple logo appears and then press the center key and play, it forces it into disc mode. Before I did this I couldnt even get it to erase in disc utilities. It wouldnt do anything. After I forced it into disc mode it let me erase everything in disc utilities and restore. ***** that this forum was no help at all.

Its a software problem. I've been reading over the forums and noticed that a LOT of problems started around the same time, syncing problems ipods that aren't being recognized etc., I am not sure but on another thread it said to use a different software called WinAmp. I havent personally used it but others have to success, if i were you i would trade in that ipod for a zune to avoid this rather major software problem that is happening to a lot of ipod classics.

  • My iPhone 4s randomly went into recovery mode and iTunes can't get it to restore.

Last night my iPhone randomly went into recovery mode on me. Just before I went to sleep a bunch of static lines appeared across the screen. The screen went dark and a few seconds later the Apple logo appeared. A few seconds later is disappeared. A few seconds later it came back. So on and so forth. I thought I had turned it off and was going to deal with it in the morning, but when I woke up the iPhone still just had the Apple logo going on and off again.
I've tried everything today. All the different button hold methods out there. I've tried to sync it to iTunes but the same **** keeps happening over and over again.
A message pops up saying "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." So I press OK. Then I press the "Restore iPhone..." button on iTunes. It asks me if I'm sure I want to "restore it to the factory settings" and I click "Restore and Update". It then says that its "extracting software", "preparing the iphone to restore", "waiting for the iphone", then "verifying iphone restore with Apple". As this is going on the "connect to iTunes" sign is shown on the screen of the iPhone. When the "waiting for the iPhone" part starts, my screen goes black, then the apple logo pops up. The "verifying iphone restore with apple" comes on the iTunes and the status bar appears underneath the Apple logo on my phone's screen. It sits there for a couple of seconds with no progress and then the screen goes black. Then iTunes has the same **** message saying "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be resotred. An unknown error occured (9)."
I've gone through this process countless times in the past few hours and have done everything that apple support has told me. The windows system is fully updated. So is the iTunes. I've restarted the computer. I have no idea whats wrong and its making my blood boil.
A couple of notes about the phone:
It's over a year old. It's never had water damage. It was nearing the max capacity of its internal storage. This has never happened before. I keep it in an Otter Box. I had very little problems with the phone. Lately a couple of apps like snapchat and the barstool sports app were taking a little longer to open up or would randomly close out and sometimes my camera would take a while to get going. But this problem is just ridiculous and completely rendered the phone useless.

    Hello Sean,
It sounds like you are constantly needing to restore your phone because it keeps going into recovery mode. Usually putting a device into recovery mode and restoring it can help isolate an issue to your iPhone hardware if an issue persists afterwards. I would try manually putting it into recovery mode and restoring it 1 more time:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If that does not resolve it the symptoms indicate to me that it is a hardware issue causing this to happen and would seek service for it:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Ipad was forced into Recovery Mode and I can't get out. Please help me!

Hi all. I'm dealing with a problem and could really use some help. I recently updated my Ipad to ios 4 with no problems and was enjoying it greatly. Afterward, I loaded Pages and Atomic Browser from the app store.
Anyway, I was surfing the net on Atomic Browser and then turned the ipad off momentarily to grab something from the kitchen. When I came back, the Ipad would not start.
I'd push the power button but nothing. Push and hold the power button. Nothing. Push and hold the home button. Nothing.
After many attempts, I decided to push the home screen button with the power button to force a reboot. I did this once a few months ago, and it just restarted my ipad fine. But this was before i updated to ios 4.
After doing this, it gave me the recovery mode screen with the pic of the usb cable pointing to the itunes logo. It has never done that before.
I don't want to reformat my ipad, i just wanted to turn it back on. I tried to exit recovery mode by holding the power button and home screen again, but it just keeps me stuck there. Nothing I do can get me out.
I don't want to reset the ipad and restore a back-up because I will lose some valuable pages documents I created recently.
    Can any one help me?
    Thank you all very much!

The same thing happened to me. After the big update, I also experienced exactly what you described. I ended up restoring the ipad a number of times.
The first few times, I restored from a back-up. The last few times I have restored the ipad as new. It would work the next few times I turned the machine on, and around the third time, it would lapse back into the recovery mode, with
the image of the serial cord connecting to an i-tunes logo on its desktop. This morning, I restored the ipad as new, but only allowed the apps manufactured by Apple to be synced back onto the ipad. I have powered it back on about three times, and so far, so good. I am waiting to see what happens the next few times I turn the machine on.
I had a very helpful senior Apple express advisor help me on Sunday to do the restore as a new ipad procedure. He said that if that did not work, the next step was having it serviced. He also mentioned that often the third party apps have problems due to getting corrupt and this often happens after a major update. That is why I thought i'd try and see what would happen if I only synced the Apple apps back onto the ipad.
It is not good though if I can't put third party applications on it without having the problem of lapsing into recovery mode, so I may have to get it serviced. I am wondering how many others have had this problem after the big update last week? Also, has anyone who was an early purchaser and got the flat-rate unlimited data plan subscription from AT&T, had to have their ipad replaced? Was there a problem with AT& T still allowing you to continue your special subscription plan?

  • The screen on my daughter's ipod is magnified and we can not get it back to normal size,  any suggestions?

The screen on my daughter's ipod touch is magnified and we can't see the whole screen.  Any suggestions?

It appears you have the Zoom accessibility feature turned on.  Tap the screen twice with three fingers to get to the normal screen.  Then go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn off Zoom.

  • Where is my iPod's camera roll backup, and how can I get it back onto iPod

I was having trouble with my iPod Touch 5 and the new update of iTunes, 12.0.1.26.  I digress here but this is why I hate updating iTunes, and now kinda hate Apple stuff in general, because every time I've updated iTunes in the past it's given me trouble with my devices and syncing.  But I'm not here to hate on Apple, I love my device, I just wish the software and workflow was more intuitive.
But on to my problem.  I plugged in my iPod and opened the iTunes update.  Bought some songs from the store, decided to rework my playlists, but when I try to sync them to my ipod, it doesn't show up.  The playlists show up in my ipod within itunes, but i can't access them from my ipod because they aren't there.  The songs I purchased from the store show up perfectly well, I just had to download them from the cloud.  But my new lists with the songs uploaded from my computer won't work.
Long story short I finally got tired of this and restored my ipod.  Mostly because I couldn't find anyone else on here with the same problem and didn't want to take the time to ask. Looking back, that might've been a better idea.
I have restored the backup and I have all my old apps, and I have my new playlists.  All I'm missing is my photo roll, which I don't understand why it wasn't restored along with all my apps.
I am wondering if this is possible because there were many pictures on there that have special meaning to me.
    Thank you!

    - The iTunes backup that iTunes makes included photos in the camera roll. If yo go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices what is the date of the backup? Is it when the photos were on the iPod? You have to restore from that backup.
    - What may have happened is that you backup the iPod after you restored the iPod but before restoring from backup. iTunes only keeps one backup and overwrites the previous backup with the changes.

  • Making weird noise and won't go into disc mode and all kinds of icons

after having many problems, i managed to get my ipod into disc mode and format it. However, i'm still having similar problems. When i turn it on, it goes on normally but when i connect it to my computer it freezes it. When i try to restart the ipod while connected to the computer, i get the battery is discharged icon, or sometimes the sick icon first and then the discharged icon, and i'm not able to put it into disc mode. After i get the icons, the only way i can get it to start again is to toggle the hold switch many times (took me awhile to figure this out..). Also, the ipod makes a weird repeated disc noise sometimes when its connected or if i'm starting it. If i try to restart the ipod without it being connected to the computer, i get the sick icon until i toggle the hold switch. can anybody help? thanks!
actually, i've managed to get it into disc mode, but it just makes the repeated weird noise nonstop and it doesn't let me open any programs on my computer so i can't format it.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.
