I randomly get black boxes instead of images when loading a webpage

== Issue
==
I have another kind of problem with Firefox
== Description
==
Ever since I upgraded to the newest version of Firefox, I've been getting a lot of blacked out boxes instead of the actual images. When I right click "View Image", the image does show up, but I don't want to keep right clicking boxes just to see an image. I also checked to see if I might how blocked the image on AdBlock or on "Page Info", but nothing was marked.
The blacking out of images seems to happen randomly at different times. From different tabs opened, not all images are blacked out. On the same page, some images will be blacked out while some show up. Also, I've for the same web page, one day I'll open it up and everything is fine, but the next day I open up the same URL and the images are blacked out. It just seems so random.
I was thinking my internet speed could have something to do with it. The blacking out also happens more frequently when I have multiple tabs open or if the images are larger. However, I did not have this problem until I upgraded Firefox.

Why do I get a question mark instead of an image when I receive e-mails?

When you receive email in HTML format (that is, as a web page), the message will usually contain links to images hosted on a remote server. When you display those images, the sender of the message will know that you've read his message, when you read it, who your ISP is, and approximately where you are. You may regard this as an invasion of your privacy. If the message is spam, then your address has been confirmed as valid and you've been confirmed as someone who opens spam messages. That will ensure you get even more spam.
If you're using the Mail application, you can prevent that information from being sent out. Select
    Mail ▹ Preferences ▹ Viewing
from the menu bar and uncheck the box marked
Display remote images in HTML messages
You'll still be able to display images when you want to by clicking the button marked
    Load Images
in the top right corner of the message window. If you do want the images to load automatically, check the box.

  • EPUB - GRAY BOXES Instead of Images

When exporting my epub book, I get gray boxes instead of images. Has anyone else run into this or know what to do to resolve this issue?
All the images are linked properly and InDesign is saying I don't have any errors. The only way I can get images to show up is ONLY if I select "Use Existing Image for Graphic Objects". But if I select this, I lose the cropping and orientation adjustments I've made in my inDesign file. I've even tried just copy and pasting an image into the document itself.
Needless to say I've spent way too long trying to figure this out and haven't made any progress...

If other people can export it fine but you can't, then I would suggest some troubleshooting of your InDesign install.
Have you tried rebuilding your preferences and then re-exporting?
Have you made sure you're not using any third-party plugins that automatically load with InDesign?
Assuming you've done those two tests and are still having a problem, then try it on a test account on your computer. Package the InDesign file and put it on a thumbdrive (or I guess you could just download the files from the link above) and then log out of your account on your computer, and log in again to a fresh new account with admin privileges. (If you haven't created one yet, you should do that first before logging out ... lol)
When you log in to the new account, all the apps are available to you but none of your other account's files or user settings. So open InDesign, download/copy over the packaged file, and open the layout and export. See if that makes any difference.
I have a short course on lynda.com on troubleshooting InDesign (just 10 short videos) that goes over these and other steps.

  • Why a black box (or fuzzy "i") when opening an image?

In one particular folder in "Events", when I click on an image to open, it opens to a black box or at best a fuzzy "i" - were the image should be, what has happened? All other options appear as normal but if I click "edit"for example - my options become unavailable and still have the black box were the image should be.
All other folders in Events are fine and no such problem occurs. In checking "preferences" nothing has changed as the problem folder preferences are the same as the others - likewise not aware I've changed anything either. I've gone into 'help" but just cannot find anything there unless I'm looking into the wrong place?
    Currently I'm on OS "X" 10.6.8 using iPhoto 09  - 8.1.2 (424) which hopefully will assist too?

    In your first post:
In one particular folder in "Events", when I click on an image to open, it opens to a black box or at best a fuzzy "i"
    In your most recent post
Currently no ! appears now, just a black box.
These are different issues with potentially different resolutions. Assuming that there is no exclamation mark warning, but just a black screen:
There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
but this is just one folder with 211 images - all other folders are fine and working as expected. Reading what you have written, you are referring to the whole library which seems to be extreme?
This is not just one folder or just 211 images. What you are seeing are symptoms of an issue in the Database file. If this file is damaged then your Library is damaged and this is what needs to be fixed. That's why deleting and re-importing won't help. You'll be re-importing to a database that is known to be damaged and unstable.

  • Why am I getting black boxes and lines in Facebook chat area?

I just installed the latest version of Firefox as well as the latest version of my graphics card drivers, and Adobe Flash Player. When I open Facebook, I get black boxes and lines all over the left side of the screen where my chat contacts are. I am wondering why this is happening and if there is a current fix to it, as it is rather annoying. When I hover my mouse next to or over the black boxes and lines, they move and continue to pop up elsewhere but only on the friends/chat area.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

  • Why do I get a grid over my image when I first open it up?

Why do I get a grid over my image when I first open it up?  I've looked in my preferences and can't find a way to have this issue stop.

Are you saying that if you turn off the Grid, it reappears the next time you open an image?  That is obviously wrong, and tjhe setting is in Preferences as you surmised, so if that is what is happening, I'd try deleteing the preferences file to reset it.  (Shift Alt Ctrl while you lauch Photoshop)

  • Videos on youtube and bbc radio iplayer display a black box instead of the player box.

so yesterday morning i was using youtube and bbc iplayer fine and then last night they suddenly stopped working and i can't think of any reason why, i haven't updated or made any changes to anything in the last day. the pages load fine but where there was previoulsy the video or in the case of iplayer the picture with the controls on, there is now just a black box. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash player but otherwise don't know what to do!
i've also tried using internet explorer and have the same problem with this. i've tried to update firefox but cant get it to work, although i imagine this won't help anyway since ive got the same problem in internet explorer.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

You can check for problems caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and possibly downgrade to Flash 11.2 or 10.3.

  • PDF docs prints black boxes instead of my pictures, Printing with Reader works

I have one user running the most updated version of Adobe Acrobat 9 (v9.4.5 I believe it is) and when she opens a PDF document that has pictues you can see the pictures and make changes to the document as needed.  However, when you go to print, all the images in the PDF document are all Black boxes.
Now if I open this same file in Adobe Reader (any version thus far has worked) the images are there and print preview and printing all work, the images print.  It is just in Adobe Acrobat that I have black boxes.
I would really rather not uninstall / reinstall if it can be avoided.
    thanks,
    Willie IT

  • LaserJet 2015 prints black boxes instead of PDF

We have four LaserJet 2015 printers that are being served by a Windows 2003 server on a network.  In one application we enter data into a web based application for an outside vendor.  That vendor then "packages" the data into a pdf and sends it back to our printers to be printed.  From time to time one of these pages will print large black rectangles instead of the usual data.  This seems to happen randomly on each printer.
Two of the printers have the latest firmware updates and all printers are using the latest drivers.  We've tried the 5e and the 6 PCL drivers but that makes no difference.  The version of the firmware also seems to play no role.
We can actually look at the emf files coming back to the server and they look fine so our vendor says "it's a driver issue."
Has anyone else encountered this sort of problem?  The searches I've done on the web and in the knowledge bases don't yield much information.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi
    I don't know if u can't find out a solution.
All device output (printers) having the same divice type have the same behavior, i.e. printers having a different device type can give a different output, so if u'll correct the problem for a certain group of printers u could have a new problem for other group.
I think the best soltion is to use the printer used to test the smartforms

  • [solved] Solid black box instead of "hovertext / tooltip"

This has been going on for a few weeks now and the new chromium update didn't fix it (damn).
Anytime I scroll over a link (or the newest XKCD comic) I get a solid black box with no text.
Here's a screenshot to show you what I mean:
I'm running kde.  Firefox and Opera are displaying fine.
    Any ideas?
    **EDIT**
Well, it does it when I hover over any of the tools in Gimp too, so it's not just a Chromium thing.  Weird.
Last edited by ctarwater (2010-11-03 05:15:36)

    I thought about that.
First I changed my chromium settings to "use classic theme", restarted it and had the same problem.  Next I changed it to use GTK+ theme, restarted it, same problem.  Last, I returned it to "hide system title bar and use compact borders" (which is my default), restarted it, same problem.
I've tried changing my color theme in the system settings and returned it to default too, still no luck.
I've changed my window decorations and my desktop theme as well.  Still no luck.

  • Black box around dropped images after publishing.

Any idea why this happens? I pull an image, edit it, and delete the background and bam it gives me a black background instead. Also what can I do to make my color indexes match in iweb and photoshop?

    Hello Al,
Thanks for writing, I have checked again and the specs match both:
vid rate 25fps frame size 1440x1080 AIC pixel aspect HD (1440x1080) Field dominance None.
However I checked a couple of other sequences and noticed that some had Field Dominance None and a couple of others had Field Dominance Upper/Odd.  Although they all are playing full screen in HD.
    Any suggestions most welcome.  Regards,

    Mom, et al. . .
I agree the internet address would be very helpful so we could test it.
I do have a few suggestions for at least making sure a simple clean up is not the problem:
First: Do you have internet apps SpeedDownload, iGetter, PithHelmet, Acid Search, Safari Enhancer ? Or Norton or Virex? Sometimes non-apple internet apps need updating or uninstalling.
Also, if the problem is only in Safari, have you done all of the following?
(Do these one at a time, then Restart Safari)
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
    HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)
    3. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.
    If you're still having problems:
    4. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
    Hope this helps
