I really, really miss "File-Save As..."

After upgrading to Mac OS X v10.7 Lion I find that the only way to do a "Save As..." of a document is to "browse all verisions", Restore, Duplicate, then select Save of the copied file, and select "Save As" in the dialog box that appears. That is WAY too many steps that in all previous versions of the Mac OS you just selected "Save As..." from the File menu. What were the Mac OS engineers thinking?? Please bring back "Save As..." from the File menu.

You missed the part where I had to "unlock" my newly created duplicate. Even on a newly-duplicated file in the Finder, there is no drop down window. The document closes immediately. I am given no option to rename the document. You only get the behaviour you describe after creating your duplicate in the application.
And what if I want to change the format? I don't want to create a Finder duplicate for that. Before, I could just do Save As, change the format, and type a new name. If I didn't want a new name, I could use the existing name with a new extension. That isn't possible in Lion because you always get the " copy" suffix. Not only is Duplicate/Save more steps to begin with, you must always re-type the file name. And to add insult to injury, when you change the format, Lion re-selects the entire file name, extension included. I can't even just start typing. I must now click in the file name to select just the base portion and type the new name.

I miss File Save

Hopefully I'm just doing something wrong, but I really miss the File Save feature. Here's a typical scenario.
Open a project, make a bunch of edits, then decide that these edits are not taking me in a good direction so I would like to abandon them. HOW? Do I really have do cmd Z my way back to the beginning? That seems rather odd.
Perhaps there's a way I can use the multiple version feature of Lion? It's certainly not clear how that works with FCPX

I have to think the next update will bring support for Lion's versioning functionality, which is exactly what you are looking for. Right now it isn't enabled.
In the meantime, you either need to manually make duplicates, or use Time Machine to take hourly snapshots.
Another option to keep in mind (and this is what I do frequently) is the auditions feature. Create a compound clip of the section you are going to make a bunch of edits to (I suppose you could also do this for the entire project as well). Then select the compound clip and "duplicate as new audition" (option-y). You can now open that compound clip in the timeline and make your edits. At any time you can switch back to how things were prior to these edits. Also at any time you can make another audition, so you can maintain your own "versioning" history.

Missing "file - save as"

when I view a pdf file in a webbrowser (firefox) (both latest versions) I don't have the possibility to save the document like "file -> save as" with using a specific file name or folder.
What do I have to do?

Files disappeared from library, "missing" files not really missing

I had a folder with 3 files in different formats for each image. These were imported several days ago, grouped into stacks, captioned, tagged, etc. and synced to the files. They continued to exist in the library some time afterward, but today when I opened lightroom all of the jpg versions of all of the images and all 3 formats of one image in particular had vanished from the library. It did not claim that it could not find them on disk (and in fact the files *do* still exist on disk right where they should), they just didn't show up. I was able to re-import all of the jpg images without trouble, but for the other two formats of the one missing image, importing one of them fails because it "already exists in the library," and the other one is willing to import but then doesn't show up in the folder or the recently imported files list. When I try to synchronize the folder, it suggests that I import that file, but it never actually does. Since importing the jpgs, it also suggests that I remove 53 "missing" files, the number of jpgs imported. When I view the missing files in the library, it shows only 2 of the jpgs, one of which belongs with the files that will not import and neither of which is actually missing--they can both be synchronized just fine by clicking the little synchronize icon on the actual photo.
Does anyone know what's going on here and how I might be able to get the files that won't import back into the library? And how to be sure that files won't just go away on their own again?
Edit: to be clear, missing versions of files were definitely not stacked with the other ones and the "don't import duplicates" box was not checked when re-importing the ones that won't re-import

I managed to get the photos that wouldn't import back in by deleting them directly out of the database and then reimporting them into lightroom. I'm a little concerned that they disappeared in the library view in the first place, though. Does this sort of thing happen often, and under what circumstances? I'm still in the free trial period and was very close to buying the program, but now I'm not so sure. If I'm using an application to manage my photos, I want to know that it's actually managing all of the photos I put into it and not randomly forgetting about them.
I'm still having the not-really-missing files problem, though. I think it may actually be because they got associated as "sidecar" files somehow and are now in there twice, once as the sidecar file and another time as a separate jpg image. I'm not really sure why only one of them shows up in the missing images view, I think it might be because I edited that one so it's in a slightly different state from the others? If there are any tips on how to resolve that state, I'm all ears, I'd like it to stop telling me I have 53 missing files when I don't.

HOW CAN I GET MY OLD TABS (FILE SAVE/BOOKMARK, ETC) BACK ON TOP OF SCREEN? I HATE THIS NEW LAYOUT!

Today some kind of update happened on Firefox without me even approving it. Suddenly, I no longer have the tabs across the top that I REALLY liked--File/save as, Bookmark, View, etc. I WANT THEM BACK. Yes, I have found the little goofy drop-down icon on the right corner of the screen, but I don't like that. How can I get old view back???

After updating to the latest version of Firefox on my Mac there is no progress bar for the page load. I really miss this feature and can't seem to find a way to obtain it.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session. 
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time. 
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page. 
Another possibility is to use:

It would be brilliant if Apple could make picture folders behave like events in iPhoto. You could see a photo on the folder, and also mouse over it to change pictures.
But no, there's not an application I'm aware of that does this. You can manually make a picture the folder icon, but it's a tedious process.
Unfortunately this is another example of how dated and worn out the Mac's interface is. The concept of using a file folder as the icon for a directory of images is so 80's. You could use coverflow, but that only helps once you're in the directory itself. Or use iPhoto or Aperture, although they just do photos. Or try Lyn as an alternative: it has a sort of iTunes-like interface, and makes it easy to organize photos without having to put them in iPhoto. And it can display photos that are already in Libraries.
But you'd probably need a Finder alternative. I use Leap, which displays any type of document. It also does tagging, which is another huge omission in the Finder. More like Windows Explorer (although still no photo on folder icons).
Another very stylish Finder alternative, especially useful for pictures, is FileBrowse. I don't know why it hasn't gotten more attention. It DOES put photo previews on the folders it shows. And allows one-click expansion to show the photo enlarged. It's super fast, and even allow you to group/sort by camera or flash! It really has to be seen to be appreciated. How to store really important files on a Time Capsule

I'm wondering whether it is wise to store really important files on a Time Capsule (apart from Time Machine) because its hard disk is non-removable and non-replaceable and there is no mirrored backup. One could lose everything in the blink of an eye.
What workarounds are there? The TC is a brilliantly simple device, but it seems to have many limitations as well.

personally, in addition to TM backups to my TC, i use a couple of external firewire drives, each partitioned in two, and bootably clone my Mac's startup disks to those on a weekly basis.
week 1 / drive X = MBP to partition A and Mini to partition B
week 2 / drive Y = MBP to partition C and Mini to partition D
week 3 and so forth = start over.
using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, you could even incrementally clone your internal drives, which saves a lot of time.

Using Apple as a Linux KDE-user, there are certain things that work differently and that one has to get used to. It's just the way it is. But there are also things that one really experiences as a handicap. In this discussion, I would like to talk about things that feel like a downgrade to me.
What I really miss is a smart clipboard
Having recently started using Apple in my work as a LAMP-developer, one of those handicaps is that the clipboard in Snow Leopard is nowhere to be compared with Klipper. Its functionality is as limited as the Windows clipboard (which I don't consider something to be proud of). The main differences are:
- automatic copying/cutting of selected text to the clipboard
- pasting with a simple mouse click
- clipboard history
- system tray icon
Working mainly with text files, you can imagine my handicap when having to open the context menu with the mouse twice (or press Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V) each time I want to copy or cut some text. It seems so unnecessary actions.
Looking around on the net, there are many people who ask for these features. A lot of tools try to fill in the gaps, but all of them I have tried don't even come near Klipper. I think it's time for Apple developers to solve it.

More than a simple clipboard is likely to confuse novice users. Most people using a computer are not technically-savvy. IMHO, in cases like this where many people won't even know what they're missing and might even wish it would go away if they did have it, it's best to let the third-party software companies take care of it. When I think about some of the folks whose computers I support - some of whom can't figure out basic things like how to eject a disk or where the Word file they just saved is - I cringe at the idea of how to explain to them how to use a more sophisticated clipboard.
In any case, though, debating whether Apple should implement something is not really appropriate material for these forums. Speculation or discussion of Apple policies is forbidden here, as it's not in keeping with the purpose of this site and tends to lead to some very heated interchanges, and this thread is close to that line.

I lost a really important file (an iText Express document) randomly and then one day, a "recovered file" folder popped up and I assume it has to do with that, but the file just contains a doc with a bunch of coding. What do I do with that? HELP!!!

As the title question states, I lost a really important file with iText Express. I've been using iText Express for a year or two now because it's just the one application I downloaded for writing and saving documents. I was working on one for a few months and randomly one day last month, when I went to open it to resume editing my work, the file was gone! I searched my whole laptop and trash. Then one day, a "Recovered Files" folder popped up in the area my file used to be, so I assumed that was the file I lost being recovered and I felt relieved. But when I opened the folder, the document inside was a "SoftwareMap" document with a bunch of coding written in it. I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with that or how it's going to help me recover my file?!? I lost SO much work!!! If anyone has ANY idea what to do, how this happened, or if the coding is supposed to help me recover my file, PLEASE help!!!

No, I already tried looking at that. The file that recovered was not in the trash, it appeared in my documents folder. I opened it up and inside was an iText Express document with coding. Then inside of there, was and then and this "SoftwareMap" document contained a bunch of coding and symbols and words.

Just got a new Mac Mini with Lion - where is the downloads folder in the Window tab that is at the top of the page in Safari? I used this a lot and really miss it!

I just got a new Mac Mini with Lion - the Window tab at the top of the Safari Browser used to ahve a downloads folder in it along with Activity etc - but it is not there anymore. Any way to get it back or is there another location it sits in? I used it when I'd copy video info from the activity folder and then paste into the download folder and presto - I downloaded the video onto my computer. I really miss this capability!

Calculating hash values for really big files

I am using the following code to calculate the hash values of files

I have used the -Xms and -Xms options to increase the JVM heap size, and untimately made it to work. However, I think this is lame and there is also a limit to the -Xmx option.
Is there any other way I can calculate the hash values of these really big files?

I agree with you, many things in the ios 6.x were more elegant. The reader was the most one of them. I think the ios7 wants to be the windows 8.
