I rebuild a photo library without a backup?

I rebuild a photo library without a backup .. it shows
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to works with this version of photo library
Quit or Upgraded .. i exit the app .. and then i looked up in my application then i have few folders
Metadata backup . what it's ? All my pictures in it , is there anything i can do be4 i click on the upgrade version?
I dont want to lose my photos.. If i upgraded it will my pictures stil be there?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
     User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Best way is to restore your backup from before the problem, rebuild it and update it again

  • How to get iPhoto back in order after recall? Is rebuilding your photo-library dangerous?

I recently had my iMac recalled, and when I got it back, about a quarter of my 62,000 photos only show the thumbnail vies. When I try to enter them to edit them, I get a black exclamtion point within a white circle and no access. I called support and did the 6 steps to rebuild. No results so far.
My back-up is questionable beucase as the comupter hard-drive was dying, it stopping backing up the exteral hard-drive 4 months prior to the actual recall when they replaced my hard-drive.
SO . . . I spent 20 hours putting every **** photo on DVD's before the recall to make sure I didn't lose them. Now I can reload the photos from the DVD's and the photos are all there and normal. However it is time consuming.
THE QUESTION IS - SHOULD I DO THE MAJOR REBUILD WITH APPLE SUPPORT, OR CONTINUE TO RELOAD FROM MY DVD'S?

    Thanks OT,
I did the list of repairs APPLE support gave me, but I do not believe it included thte Option+Command launch. Is that a full rebuild that risking losing my organization (books, slideshows, etc)?
I do have two external hard drives which I alternate every few months in case of fire, and which are connected (one at a time) with time machine. Apparently during the internal hard drive failure I missed that the external backups stopped working, and the faulty hard drive would not let me back up when I tried before the recall. NOW my backup works, but it is backing up the faulty data! If I use the old back up I lose 4 months of data, if I use the new I have the fautly data. I think I am back to reloading with the DVD's I made. By the way, I made them becuase I had a computer AND it's external hard drive fail beyond repair 4 years ago. At that time I was able to rebuild my photo library from discs becuase I had made a CD or DVD of every project as I downloaded it from the camera. Heres to backing yourself up in multiply ways!
    Oh my.

Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Is there a way to use iCloud Photo Library WITHOUT syncing?

The idea I had of iCloud Photo Library was that I could upload my pictures to it and access them from all my devices WITHOUT having to sync them.
At the end of every month, I move all the photos from my phone to my computer. It helps me save space and keep things tidy. With iCloud Library, I want to access all my photos, but it looks like I must sync them through iCloud, and then to save space in my phone, I have to select "optimise space for iPhone". Is there any way to use iCloud Photo Library as a mere cloud storage? I don't want to keep photos on my phone, neither full resolution or "optimised" ones. I want to put them on iCloud, and when I need them, then I want my phone to download them.
I realise I could use other cloud storage providers for this, but I have always liked Apple's integration with their own services, so if possible, I would like to use iCloud Photo Library without syncing to my devices. Just keep my stuff in iCloud, and when I tap it, download it.

    www.icloud.com.
Doesn't work well in IE8 (9 I would think is ok), but is fine in the current version of Chrome.

  • Recurring rebuilding/updating photo library on ipad

Why does the iPad frequently need to rebuild/update the photo library? Why does it call the process updating in one part of the screen and rebuilding in another part of the same screen? The last time this happened there were 5,000 fewer photos than before the update. After a subsequent rebuild the 5,000 photos returned. The photos saved during the prior two hours were lost, they did not return. This is a very time consuming process and really disrupts the user experience of surfing the Tumblr web site and saving various photos. What can be done about this? This is after i did a restore to factory settings and a restore of an older backup file. The iTunes program 10.1.1 is unable to successfully complete a current backup of the iPad. It starts ok but then the iPad decides to reboot itself and the iTunes program become not responding and freezes.
Something seems to be very flawed with iOS 4.2. When will there be an update to fix the problems.
    marKeith

    Hi Keith,
The iTunes program 10.1.1 is unable to successfully complete a current backup of the iPad.
In the iTunes window under the Summary tab, look at the bottom of the window to make sure there is sufficient storage space.
And try deleting the iPod Photo Cache, instructions here.
iTunes: Photo sync creates iPod Photo Cache folder

  • Syncing photo's from iphoto adds another 'photo library' without deleting 'camera roll' photo

    Hi there,
I found that I can add photo's (without deleting my existing camera roll) to my Iphone 4 from my girlfriends mac to my iphone by syncing from iphoto and selecting the photo events or folder I want. Then pressing 'apply' adds a new photo library to my phone with these selected pics in them. In this cercumstance I can only delete these photos using the same process by de-selecting them in 'sync from iphoto' and again pressing 'apply' There is no function / icon in my actual iphone to delete this library or even individual photo.
However when I try this exact same process on my girlfriends Iphone 4 (same model) the 'apply' function threatens to delete all photos from her phone, leaving her with ONLY the ones selected / checked.
Just in case it is part of explaining this I have tried this logged in on my account and hers but both have the same results in every combination. There appear to be two different set of rules going on here within I-tunes I would prefer to be able to add photo's without deleting existing ones but I would also like to be able to selectively delete these photo's once on my phone without going back to connect to tha mac.
Can anyone explain if this is possible or am I asking for 'my cake AND eat it' ?
Why are ther differences in our phones governing rules in Itunes?

Thanks Winston, you are correct "sync". In fact I found the answer in a slightly different way. There is a check-box in the photo's tab that provides for syncing photo's before any media. Therefore this will in fact create the necessary space on the ATV for the photo's by moving other media content from syncing to streaming.
Of course the alternative, as you point out is to limit what actually gets synced in custom sync.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • IPhone 3GS~click photo, begins rebuilding the Photo library.

I have an iPhone 3GS. When I hit Photos it has started rebuilding the library. Stops and states that there is a problem with the Photo library. Please click Photos to fix it. I do and the same process is repeated. Suggestions?

When you go into the Photos App, select the folder where the photos are that you want to delete. There should be an "Edit" button at the top right, select this. Then you can tap on every photo that you want to delete. When you are done selecting the photos, tap the red "Delete" button, bottom right.

  • Viewing photo's photo library without starting from the top

I have over 12000 photos on my iPhone and get frustrated if I need to find a relatively recent photo in the photo library. The app always opens with the very first photos and I'm forced to scroll all the way through the years. Is there a setting I'm missing?

No, but you can organise it in different folders.
I supposed you have backup on the computer?

  • Restore i photo 09 without TM backup

I wish to know how to downgrade back to i-photo 09 as the new i-photo 11 just does not work. I have already installed i-photo 11 and upgraded the libary, but after that the programs keeps wanting to upgrade again. After the 3rd time of upgrading, I assume there must be technical fault with the program. I have not opened the program again, fearing that I would lose all my pictures as other's have.
Foolishly I have not backed up the libaries before the upgrade , as I had no such problems in the past in upgrading from i-photo 8 to 09. I am not a very computer technically minded, but need some good advice in saving a large photo collection, containing very precious memories.
Most appreciated for any good advice.

Foolishly I have not backed up the libaries before the upgrade
Then you can't. Reverting to 09 will mean that you will have to recover your original photos from the upgraded library and start over again from scratch, as if you never used iPhoto before. Is that what you want to do?
have already installed i-photo 11 and upgraded the libary, but after that the programs keeps wanting to upgrade again.
Plenty of folks have had that issue and found a solution. For instance:

I lost my iphoto in snow lepard. How do I get it back?

Have you tried rebuilding as the message suggests? Otherwise you need to remember that we can't see your machine and so haven't a clue what you're asking.

Well I have been at this for 3 days trying to get Iphoto to load.  I have uninstalled, installed over and over again the ILife. Today I even downloaded Iphoto for 15 dollars from the App Store. I am running version 10.7.2 on my IMAC. Please please please can someone help get my Iphoto up and running.  Thanks!

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • When i open iPhoto it says my photo library is unreadable and will not open. How can i fix this without losing my photos?

"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable... Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. How do i solve this problem? Dpes rebuilding your photo library delete all your photos? I have thousands of photos with no back up HELP!!

Well if you have no back up you need to make a back up now. It might be too late, but you're not going to know until you fix this.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    Then try:
It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
