I recently purchased MBP retina  w/Thunderbolt Display

I recently purchased MBP retina with Thunderbolt display. Also purchased Apple Care for the MBP. Does the Apple Care cover the Thunderbolt display also? Or do I need to purchase additional Apple Care for the display? Back in 2006 when I bought previous MBP with Cinema Display, the Apple Care purchase covered both. Does this still apply or have the rules changed?

hawpotr,
you can find the current terms and conditions of an AppleCare Protection Plan in your region of the world here.

What are my options regarding color correction for a new 13" Retina MBP and Thunderbolt display using Spyder color calibration system, or equivalent?  Really important I nail that down before purchasing.

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • When I disconnect my MBP from my Thunderbolt display and reconnect, arrangement resets.

I have a MBP Retina and a 27" Thunderbolt display. When I disconnect from the Thunderbolt display and then reconnect, my arrangement is reset and I have to set it again.  This has been happening for the last day.
I am on OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite and I just updated the Thunderbolt firmware yesterday.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
However, there seems to be a bug in iOS 8 or iTunes 12.1.1 that cause this problem and I have not seen a solution

  • What are the best Color "Display Settings" for both my Macbook Pro Retina and Thunderbolt Display??

I have recently purchased a Thunderbolt Display for my MBPr (early 2013) and was wondering what were the best settings for both to obtain an equal color and graphic appearance. I want to have them identical for working on graphics and illustrations.
    Thanks

I have the same laptop. There's nothing you really need to do to optimise the system. Perhaps just install the cuda drivers.
It runs premiere like a dream.

  • Upgraded Windows 8 to 8.1 on Haswell Retina - Only Thunderbolt Display working - Retina Display Black!

So this is a crazy one... I've read through all the articles with everyone's issues with the new MBPr Haswell and Bootcamp.  This one is unique I believe.  I started off with a perfectly functioning Windows 8 Pro copy installed on a Lacie Thunderbolt External SSD (I extracted the install.wim file to a separately partitioned EFI boot as described here: http://bleeptobleep.blogspot.com/2013/02/mac-install-windows-7-or-8-on-external. html) and it worked flawlessly.  I could boot through Mac OSX with it either directly connected to my MBPr or daisy-chained through my TBD (Thunderbolt Display).
I thought all was well and updated to 8.1 through the in-store free upgrade.  It worked on startup, but after my second time booting it up I noticed that the Retina Display (dual-monitor setup) was very dim.  I went to adjust the brightness and *blip* - it just turned off while the Thunderbolt Display continued working.  I rebooted several times after messing with drivers, reinstalling (or running the fix) the bootcamp software to no avail.  Now Win 8.1 runs perfectly on my Thunderbolt display only with my Macbook Retina next to it, open with a blacked out screen! BUT I'm really bummed that I don't have a dual-display set up and Windows isn't recognizing the actual laptop's display! What?!
I know someone out there much more knowledgeable than me knows the answer!  I've tried settings, drivers, etc.!  Could it be that I've installed it to a Thunderbolt External?  Like I said, it worked as Win 8 Pro flawlessly!  I'd rather not use precious internal SSD space if possible!  Help!

Ok so I was exhausted and just missed something really simple.  In the Power Settings under the "advanced" tab, there was a setting that read: "Dim display when connected to a) battery 0% and b) plug 0%".  They were obviously both at zero, why the Thunderbolt display was still lit up, I don't know.  I reconfigured the display settings to be extended to 2 displays and it works perfectly!
For anyone that wants Windows 8.1 to boot from an external disk, I suggest the above tutorial (only use a Thunderbolt external, as the read/write speeds of anything else are horrible).  It worked soo so well, unfortunately the only thing that doesn't work well is my brain, and b/c of that I missed a very simple setting, haha.
The only tweaks I made in the process was to install Windows 8 Pro first, then run Boot Camp, then install Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store as an update.  All Bluetooth, display, (all peripheral) settings work just as if I was on a Windows machine.  Flawless.  Thanks to anyone who saw this and tried to help!

  • MacBook Pro Retina and Thunderbolt display

    Hi all,
I noticed a for me new strange behavior when running  my new TBD on my new MBPR. Running Mountain Lion.
When the lid is closed, that is when the MBPR's screen is closed and I use the TBD as an external display it only works when I use the TBD's power supply or the Mag Safe dito, do i disconnect the power from the MBPR the screen geas black... ok , that is as described in the manual. But....
..in the same scernario with no external power to the MBPR... if I open the MBPR, that is pull up the MBPR's screen they both spring to life anf can be used again???
    What's the logic about this?
Please tell me the relevance why this is possible?
    Regards
    /Cekari

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

  • MacBook Pro Retina with Thunderbolt Display Issues

I have issues when connecting my MacBook Pro to the Thunderbolt Display when I don't do a fresh boot of the MacBook Pro.  It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, the Thunderbolt Display usually turns on succesfully, but none of my USB devices (mouse, keyboard) respond and when I try to disconnect the Thunderbolt, the MacBook doesn't realize it's been disconnected and thus I'm just left with the background screen and have to shut it down by holding the power button for a few seconds.
With a fresh boot, everything works fine.  Are you supposed to have to shut down and restart everytime you hook up this monitor?  Has anyone had these issues?

I have the exact same issue. I hauled the TB Display into the Apple Store 3 times and finally they replaced it. Come to find out this new one has the same issue still. So It has to be rMBP related at this point. Unfortunately I don't think I have it under warranty still and the issue is hard to demonstrate. I recorded videos of it but every time I go into the store and plug it is the same as switching the speakers from internal to external and it takes 30-60 mins before it degrates to scratching sounds.
Please let me know if you ever foudn a solution. Im going to try to keep taking it in until I can get this resolved.

  • Exchange recently purchased MBP

I purchased a 17" MBP 10 days ago (I know, I know, I didn't know the new ones were coming out). It is opened. Will Apple let me return it, without paying the 10% restock, in order to purchase the new 17" MBP with the 320GB drive? Will the 2.6 GHZ MBP with the 320GB 7200 rpm drive be available at retail, or only online?
    Thanks

Regarding the most recent update to the 17" model -- since it still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, and we know, as Apple has stated that those chips are known to be susceptible to defective packaging (from nvidia) if made up to September 2008, does anyone know of any way to know if these "new"/refreshed 17" macbook pros were assembled with newer chips from nvidia later than September?
I can't accept the new design for the unpro keyboard/screen so my only choice is this 17" version.
Won't go for previous revision of 15" due to the nvidia defect, and so I need to know if the newer 17" model is not susceptible.
Anyone with one of these systems know their manufacture date -- apparently you should be able to determine this from the serial no.

  • MBP Retina and Second Display issues

I'm using a Macbook Pro with retina display and having a hard time really understanding how it translates to a normal 72dpi screen, so I hooked up a second computer, this is what photoshop looks like on it...
    Suggestions?

  • When bootcamping, MBP(Retina 15") does not have wireless capabilities.  What do I do?

I used bootcamp with no problems on my iMac (2008), booting into Windows 7 32bit.  However, with my recently purchased MBP Retina the wireless card seems to be missing a driver or something, and will not even show when I go to wireless help on windows 7.  I installed the Windows 7 64bit.

After installing Windows you must immediately install the drivers provided by BC prior to installing Win. The operations BC does are: 1. create Windows partition; 2. create drivers to be either burnt unto a CD or copied to a USB flash drive; 3. install windows. When Windows is ready, use the product created in step 2, otherwise you will have a lot of problem running Windows, from resolution, to wireless and bluetooth.

  • Can't adjust thunderbolt display on Retina MBP

    Hi,
I have a Retina MBP with two thunderbolt displays, the second daisy-chained to the first. My problem is that I cannot adjust the brightness on one of the displays (the first in the chain).  I've tried using the keyboard's f1/f2 keys, I've tried fn-ctrl-f1/f2, etc.  I've also tried going through the display preferences, where if I adjust the brightness slider bar, it adjusts only the second display.
I've rearranged the two displays so that the display with the adjustable brightness is first in the chain, and the problem migrates with the problematic display.  I've also tried isolating the problematic display by removing the second monitor.  In that case, none of the keys (f1/f2, fn-ctrl-f1/f2) have any effect.  Even the display preferences is missing the brightness slider bar.  I've tried powering everything off (unplugging), removing all of the USB devices attached to either display, but nothing seems to change this behavior.
Both displays have firmware version 22.2.  Does anyone have any suggestions for debugging this further?

I sorted out how to adjust brightness from your MBP Retina to your TB display. Hold the keys Shift+ALT+ F2 or F1 depending on whether you want the display brighter/darker. This will ONLY adjust your laptop monitor which was frustrating so I figured out the following.
In order for the above key command to work ( Shift+ALT+ F2)  on the external monitors, you need to plug in the USB chord hardwired to the TB display into the USB hub of your keyboard or USB hub of your laptop. This allows you to control the brightness through the USB. In addition you need to plug in the keyboard's USB to the laptop. So one USB  into laptop from the TB display and one USB from keyboard into computer. Please let me know if this worked for you if you haven't already sorted the problem. Worked for me!
    Thanks!
    Daniel.

  • Citrix receiver on MBP and thunderbolt display get stalled due to screen resolution

Running citrix apps on MBP together with Thunderbolt display. Citrix app will launch but will not operate as is gets resolution error message. Also after upgrading to Mavericks launching the Citrix app only work 1 out of 3 time (not sure at all of the reason it is not always not working).
I have the latest Citrix receiver version 11.8.2 - Java 7-45 also up to date.
Anyone seen similar issue and got it resolved ?

I am having a similar issue where I can log in to our server but once citrix viewer opens i get a black screen and thats it. No resolution errors though. Before the Mavericks update all worked just fine.
I have a MBP, citrix receiver 11.8.2 and java updated as well.

  • Major differences between MBP retina & MBP?

I recently bought the MBP retina, and I'm sort of regretting buying it.. The only difference between a 15 inch MBP mid 2012 model and the MBP retina is the display, and I spent nearly 400-500 more dollars on it... .
What are some differences between the regular MBP 2012 and the MBP retina? (both 15 inch)
    `

There are major differences between the two that go beyond the screen - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP649 shows the specs for the non-Retina 2012 MBP models. Here - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP653 - are the tech specs for the Retina. The non-Retina have a Firewire 800 port, an Ethernet port, as well as a single Thunderbolt port and USB 3.0 ports. No HDMI on the non-Retina. The non-Retina have users replacable RAM and hard drives where with the Retina you have soldered RAM and flash storage.
Why are you regretting your purchase of a Retina display model? In any case, if you're within 14 days of purchase, you can exchange you rMBP for another or get a full refund and purchase whatever you like.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Can I use an external Thunderbolt Display connected drive as my "content" drive?

I'm looking into updating my computer, and am considering a Retina MBP and a Thunderbolt display.  What I want to know, is given that the rMBP is currently so limited in it's SSD capacity (at the low end), could I have all my music/photo/movie libraries stored on a big Thunderbolt drive that is plugged into the Thunderbolt Display?  I realize that I'm only going to have access to these libraries while plugged in to the display, but I've got iTune Match running, so as far as music is concerned it's not an issue.  I'm wondering if there are other ways that I can do the same thing with wireless network drives, Time Capsule, etc.?  I'm not familiar with using external drives to do this.  Until now, I've always preferred to have everything on one machine and back up to a Time Capsule.  I'm looking for what people think is the best solution.  Thanks.

I don't have a Thunderbolt RAID set-up yet but, yes, you could do what you're asking. I already store all my photos and most of my iTunes library on FireWire 800 drives. A Thunderbolt RAID would be just perfect (I have my eye on a few but just haven't made up my mind on whether to wait a year or so when the price goes down and continue to use my FW drives).
I'm not crazy about Retina display models right now. The GPU just doesn't seem to be able to handle all that's thrown at it, there are no third-party apps that I use that are Retina-ready, and, especially when you add the 768GB flash storage and 16GB of RAM, it's just too expensive. If you do get the RMBP, I suspect that you'll be using the ATD more than the 15" display - a friend of mine who plunked down the $4K+ for the full-featured RMBP calls it a 'piece of crap' and is looking for a buyer.
I have 3 FW800 drives that I use - a 1TB, a 2TB and an old 500GB that came out of my MBP. I'll soon be getting a 4TB RAID that's also FW800 (at less than half the price of a similar Thunderbolt model). But if you can afford the Thunderbolt external drives, go for it!
I also use my 2TB for my Time Machine backups. I will have two TM backups once I get my new 4TB.
    Call back with any questions...
