Test your sustained internet speed at speedtest.net. See what your result is - if you have a very slow connection it's not really Apple's fault but they don't publicise the requirements that well (yes you can find them in footnotes etc but they're not in the main sections of product descriptions).
HD needs 6-8 Mbps for near instant playback. I only get 4 Mbps - it takes 40-45 mins for a film to prebuffer.
Fort SD you'll get away with slower speed of around 3 Mbps.
The problem with the AppleTV 2 is that once a download starts, doing other things with the unit unfortunately often erases the downloaded part so when you go back to see how long it'll take it starts over again.
You can try changing rentals from HD to SD in Settings for iTunes store, but tyhis will not apply to things already rented.
If your speedtest.net result is good, then it may be another issue entirely and you may want to take it up with Apple.
You can also rent some titles in iTunes and then stream them once they're downloaded which allows you to use AppleTV 2 for other things in the interim - they appear on AppleTV 2 under Computers>Your iTunes Name>Rentals. Not all things are available in iTunes though.

I have a suspicion that the problem is not in the recording device itelf, but rather in the playback-software, which is struggling with an unfamiliar audio format/codec/whatever-it's-called... I opened the file in QuickTime Player 7 (7.6.6) and selected "Show Movie Properties" and it says:
"Video Track: H.264
Sound Track: Integer (Little Endian)"
All current Mac systems support Integer (both Big and Little Endian) audio natively. The fact you can hear anything at all proves that the audio is playing back. The most likely problem would be a malfunction associated with the mic pickup.

This should help. Presumably you have not tried to move your movie to some other device as it can only be on one device at a time. Also, presumably you allowed it to finish downloading.

TS3354 I downloaded a HD and SD version of the movie and can't play it on my 1st generation Apple TV

I bought a HD version of a movie and it won't play on my 720 p TV or WIndows PC, then I went back and re-downloaded the SD version of the movie. Now the SD version will play on my Windows computer, but it still won't play on my 1st generation Apple TV.

AppleTV1 can sync with 1 iTunes library - the top one listed in Settings>Computers.
Other libraries are 'shared' or streaming only, and appear under the top entry.
You basically need to remove the current iTunes library from AppleTV - select it and remove it - then adfd it again as the to 'sync' compuetr entry.
NOTE - changing the sync liubrary wipes AppleTV of data though apparently it does not delete items not yet reverse synced to iTunes. If it buggers up contact iTunes store support.

If there is a problem with the film then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account (Store > View My Apple ID on iTunes 11) and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that film and use the 'Report a Problem' link and fill in details about the problem (iTunes support should reply within, I think, about 24 hours).
Some people have had a problem with the 'report a problem' link (it's been taking people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) - if it does that to you then try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purcahses, Billing & Redemption.

I should be in your Video App. Also, look on yur computer. Go to the Store tab in iTunes and click on check for available downloads.

If you have an app to play .mkv files, you can share your iPad's screen with your Apple TV. Do do this, double click your home button and on the screen that comes up, swipe to the right to reveal controls. If your iPad is connected to the same network as your Apple TV is, then you should see a symbol that looks like an arrow pointing into a tv, click that and a screen should come up asking, select Apple TV and it should work.

Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.
If you are using a sound system/receiver, make sure that you have correctly mapped the input port on your sound system to the output, if you are unsure about how to do this, refer to the manual that came with your sound system.
Have you tried playing various content sources (i.e. podcasts, music, iTunes Store video, other video etc), do you have the same problem with all types of content? If you use optical you might also check that you can see a red light at the end of your optical audio cable. Is your optical audio cable plugged straight into your sound system, or does it go through a switch or other device?

A movie rented on an iPhone can only be viewed on an iPhone. If you want to view on TV you need to rent directly on ATV or via computer (and stream using home-sharing)

After about 45 minutes it had only downloaded about 5%. my daughter gave up and went to bed. Can I return this and get my money back? I was trying to download it on Apple TV, but it wouldn't work, so I purchased the rental from my I pad. It would have taken hours to download at that rate. Usually I have no problem.

I had the same issue with my apple tv 3rd generation. I rented Sinister and selected the "rent and watch now" option. Half way through the movie I accidentally pressed the menu button. When I looked for the rented movie on my apple tv I could not find it. Not even above the movie pannel where "purchased" and "top movies" comes up on the main menu. the apple tv suggests to go to settings>downloads but I don't have that option. I did go to settings> itunes store> check rentals but that didnt work either. It took too long to even check. Thank you because this SOLUTION worked great.
SOLUTION: How to reset apple tv 3 3rd generation to view rented movies:on the apple tv remote: press and hold "menu" to go to the main menu. Select SETTINGS> GENERAL >RESET >RESET ALL SETTINGS. After the apple tv resets, input all your information again and your rented movies should be visible when you cruise above the "movies" section. THANK YOU!!
Apple needs to solve this issue because honestly it took me 3 hours and a half to watch a movie that only lasted 2 BECAUSE I wast trying to solve the issue, reseting and all. blahh.
