I replaced my hard drive and the new one seems "loose".

I recently put a new HDD in my 15" Macbook Pro as the old one failed. The new one is this one: https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=26175 ; Western Digital 500GB 2.5" SATA. I made sure it was 9.5mm which is what was recommened for the MBP.
But when I pick up my MBP and tilt it or flip it over the new HDD kinda bumps against the bottom cover like it's not in there right, which the old one never did. I don't want it to get damaged by rattling around inside the case. I've checked the "brackets" (whatever they are) that hold it in and they're fine, screws are in tight.
Is there anything I can do? Can I stick something between the case and the HDD? Is there something I can put on it to hold it in there firmly? What's up?

4 of them? I think I see what you're talking about. They are still on the old drive, I must have been so eager to get it back up and running that I completely missed that step.
I don't have the right screwdriver on me at the moment so I'll give it a go tomorrow but it looks like that's the answer. Cheers!

  • HT4889 Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive?

Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive? Should I use Carbon Copy or does apple have a better untility to do this?
I can't get my current system drive (OSX 10.8.3) to start on the first try. I always have to shut down and restart again to finally see the Apple logo.
Have used disc utility to repair the disc and permissions several times and that works. The next time I boot up, it works fine and I get the apple logo, but then the second time I boot up, it's back to the blank screen again and it only boots after the second try.  I have tried this repair three different times now always with the same result. Works right the first try (after the repair) then from the second time on it doesn't work. I just get the white screen until I reboot a second time.
Thinking I should change drives but what's the easist and best way to move everything over to the new drive so it will boot correctly with all my data on it. This is the system drive for a Pro Tools 10HD setup. MacPro 3,1 with 16 gigs ram and OSX10.8.3 on it.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

I just bought a mac mini over the weekend. I saved items from my old G4 to an external hard drive. I go to plug in the external hard drive and the new computer is not recognizing it. Help.
Here is the information I have. The external hard drive is a 120GB Acomdata. It has both USB and Firewire. When I go to plug in to the mac mini through USB, it is not being recognized. When I switch to Firewire on the old computer I can see it, however when I go to USB it is not being recognized (even on the old computer).
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any advice would be helpful.

Have you ever tried the FW 400 to 800 adapter?
I have used them on multiple occasions and they work just fine.
Try this (maybe you already have):
    -Boot Mini with drive disconnected.
-Do not connect drive but turn it on
-wait a few seconds for drive to spin up
-plug cable into the Mini then into drive.
This is an old drive and may have some timing
    issues.
I had an Acomdata drive a long time ago.  It
worked fine with FW but USB was flakey.

  • HT5096 where is the administrator window when I drag the folder "Backups.backupdb" from the old hard drive on the new one?

where is the administrator window when I drag the folder "Backups.backupdb" from the old hard drive on the new one? At the moment when I try to do it, the window that appear doesn't allow me to continue. it only says "the volume has the wrong case sensitivity". thanks

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

  • Replacing old hard drive with a new one. HP ENVY DV7 7230us laptop

I am trying to replace my old hard drive with a new one. For some reason it won't do it. I want to perform a clean install with the recovery disks. It seems the only way I can do this is to clone the old one with the new. I have attempted several times and wasted a lot of time trying to use my new drive. Is HP preventing me from doing this for some reason? Is there a work around for this?

Do you know anything about this? Now I am having problems installing the original win8 operating system, (purchased the 3 disk set) on the original hard drive, Toshiba 750g.. It installs up to updating updates but hangs at 13%. The reinstall hasn't even finished. Getting very frustrated. Your assistance is very appreciated.

  • I replaced my hard drive and the entire software is disappered

I recently found out my hard drive was dead and unable to find when I start-up my computer so I went to the computer reapir shop. They said my computer's harddrive was totally dead so they replaced a new one for me. However, wihtout the software. I still unable to turn on my computer. Anyone could help me with it?

Anwering a few questins willl help with this process.  What kind of machine do you have and when was it orginally sold?  What did they replace, just the inernal disk?  What OS X operating system were you running?  Do you have a Time Machine backup or other backup?  Did you go to an Apple Authorized Service Provider?  Did this machine come with re-installation CD-ROMs?

  • I am changing my hard drive and want to copy my old hard drive to the new one.

I went to the apple store with a bad hard drive in my macbook pro. The apple store said change the hard drive, they did, but I wanted to save the old hard drive to get everything off of it. So, I borrowed a sata enclosure and I was able to get everything from the orignial drive (which wasn't really broken) onto my external harddrive. Then I started up the Computer, but didn't use the Migration Assistant (Dumb, I know). Now I need to get everything that was on the original drive and put it where it is suppose to go. Is there a simple solution?

If this external drive is a boot drive (has the OSX on it), you can swap it into your MBP or use Disk Utility>Restore to clone the data to the internal MBP HDD.
    Ciao.

  • I have a new hard drive fitted, next to my old one, I want to move my bookmarks from the old hard drive to the new one.

My old hard drive had a problem, I can get info from it, I just want to get my old bookmarks.

The user data is store in the profile folder. You can copy the data manually by copying the relevant files from the old profile folder into your current profile folder. If it is just the bookmarks that you want, you can just copy places.sqlite from the old profile folder.
For details of the location of the profile folder, and what the files/folders in the profile folder are for see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

I had to replace my hard drive and can't get my Photoshop CS2  9.0.2 to activate.  I have tried both the phone and the website and have both the serial numbers.  I can't find a number that works to speak to a live person at Adobe.  I need to reduce the pixel size TODAY on some photos and need the program.  Is there another way to reduce pixels if I can't get my Photoshop running today?

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.
