I run System 10.5.8 on a Mac and receive the reply "You can't open the application 'Firefox.app' because it is not supported on this architecture."
I always update to your newest Firefox configuration and did so when I was asked to upgrade to "Firefox 4" for the Mac. When I tried to access my account I receive the above message. I dumped the upgrade which wiped my Mac clean of all my bookmarks and again downloaded Firefox 4 but with the same result. Tried to switch to Safari but this too was unsatisfactory. I'm guessing I need to return to a previous Firefox upgrade and never again try and upgrade. How do I do this?
Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

All of the sudden my System Preferences in Mavericks has stopped working and I get the error message:
You can't open the application "System Preferences.app" because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
It was working fine before this, and I have run Permissions Repair, restarted to another partition and run Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro, but none of those has helped. Anyone have any ideas why this happened, and what I can do to fix it?See this entire thread

I just want to download Firefox 3.6 again
I downloaded Firefox 4 onto my PowerPC G4, 1.67GHz running Mac OSX 10.5.6. When I try to open it I get error message You cannot open the application “Firefox” because it is not supported on this architecture.Use Tony's suggestion. I am running it right now and it is awesome. I love Mozilla but they basically screwed all of those older Macs over. Come on Mozilla. These Macs still work, and there are plenty of people with them out there.

"You cant run adobe flash cs4 because it is not supported on this architecture" HELP!
I just installed adobe cs4 design premium, and everything works fine except for the program I wanted most, which is Flash. It has a little circle with a line through the icon and whenever I try to run it, it tells me that it cant run because it is not supported on this architecture. I have already re-installed it four times and it never helps. I cant find any help on this board even though similar questions have been asked. Its on a brand new imac, can someone please help?
I'm afraid I don't have experience with troubleshooting this install issue to offer any sort of concrete answer about what's the quickest/easiest way to resolve it. Maybe someone else on this forum or a google search will provide some advice from people who have experienced this first-hand and will know the quickest steps to get the software running. If not, perhaps investigate partitions without journaling, or disabling it (the Apple site has info about this if needed).

I've read your recommended work around, that said to trash all previous versions of Firefox, I've done so and now have no browser other than Safari.
Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor (which you do NOT have; '''''yours is a PPC Mac''''') '''''<u>and</u>''''' OSX 10.5 or higher.
*System Requirements: [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/4.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 4] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/5.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 5] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/6.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 6] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/7.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 7] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/8.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 8] [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/9.0/system-requirements/index.html Firefox 9]
'''''The good news''''' is that Firefox 3.6.x still supports OSX 10.4 and Macs with the PPC Mac architecture. '''''The bad news''''' is that support for the Firefox 3.6.x series is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

You can try the third-party product '''''TenFourFox''''' that supports PPC Macs with OSX 10.4.11 and OSX 10.5.8. Firefox 9 version of '''''TenFourFox''''' is available. The product is based on Firefox released versions. All support is provided by the developer, not by this site:

The above is my question
Sorry, Firefox 4+ versions don't support PPC architecture.
For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4 / 5 / 6, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />

Or use Firefox 3.6.20: <br />

i accidentally deleted some drivers from my macbook air and now i can not access app store and system preferences as it says the following message (You can't open the application System Preferences because it may be damaged or incomplete)
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. -
Can't load App Store on my macBook Pro. Error is; You cannont open the application "App Store" because it is not supported on this system. How can I upgrade App Store or download new version?
Problem now resolved as I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6. Seems App Store doesn't like anything previous to 10.6.

I am running Lion (OS X 10.7.4) and trying to reinstall iLife06, a .mpkg file, using Installer.app. I get a message "You can't open the application iLife06.mpkg because PowerPC apps are no longer supported." Is there a work around?? Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.
The only workaround would be to purchase the current version of iLife apps from the App Store.
Lion doesn't support the old PowerPC architecture anymore, which is what iLife '06 was written for.
If the internal apps are universal, right-click on the mpkg and choose Show Contents. Then, dig through and run the specific installer package for each application. -
You can't open the application System Preferences because it may be damaged or incomplete.
You can't open the application System Preferences because it may be damaged or incomplete.
say this and same on mac store when i press appBack up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin. -
? cannot open pdf files. get 'because it is not supported on this system'?
Cannot open pdf files. get a pop up that says 'You cannont open the application "" because it is not supported on this system.
Hi Sharon,
Highlight a PDF in the Finder, do a Get Info on it, (CMD+i), what does it say for Open with? Or choose Open with... Preview.
Another test is to open Preview in Applications, then drag a PDF to Preview's icon in the Dock. What happens? -
InDesign CS4 won't run - 'not supported on this architecture' error
Hi there,
I'm having a problem with InDesign and Flash (both CS4), installed as a bundle in one go from Adobe Master Collection discs, When trying to launch InDesign or Flash, I get a message that they are 'not supported on this architecture'.
I'm on a MacPro with 2x3GHz Quad Core and 4GB running 10.5.7.
All the other CS4 Master Collection apps have installed and run fine.
My volume is formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Any ideas?
thanks

How do i fix this? I spent a lot of money on this program and now i cant even use it because i got a new laptop? (Lion)
You can't fix it. PowerPC programs do not run on Lion. extended support for PPC apps was dropped after 5 years. You need 10.6 or prior to run that program.

I spent ages digging out the disc as it was installed on my old iMac and it clearly states that it does not require a Power PC.
I also tried upgrading to imovie 11 but all my old movies won't import.
I've heard from others in these forums that iMovie 6 is the only way to resolve this and people have described how they are running it on Lion.
So how can I get iMovie 6 to run?Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
NeoOffice
Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
Keynote - presentation
Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)
You will find that the above applies to any PPC-only software including old iLife. You can purchase the new iLife versions on the App Store. -
MAC G4 desktop.
