I saw a ghost reflected in my iMac screen?

Do you think it was really a ghost or is it just because the screen is so glossy? I did just move into a new apartment and I have this feeling something is behind me often when I'm at the computer.

Lasey ~ If your new apartment is on a +dead end+ street, I think it really was a ghost.

If you run _Photo Booth_ continually, you'll be able to see what you're feeling without having to turn around. But if it looks like this, it's just someone in a costume:

...unless it's a ghost in a costume trying to deceive you — but that would be unlikely.

Can you post a picture of your problem?  Sometimes, that helps.  You did not mention where this ghosting effect takes place?  Startup?  Finder?  Browser?

What causes ghosting on an iMac screen (27")?
The ghosting on my computer is not uniform; it becomes darker toward the bottom of the screen and is more prominent on the left side.

That's just because of a defective LCD panel (it has nothing to do with your graphic card). A lot of Macs have got that problem, and unfortunately, the only solution to that is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get your display replaced

  • Does anyone like their new iMac screen?????

I am going to be recommending a new imac for some friends and wanted to know if there is anyone that likes the new screens on their iMac?
I know only people with problems post on here, but just wanted to see if there are any happy iMac users.
    thanks in advance

For the past 4 years, I've been using the Powerbook G4 laptop and I prefer the matte screen display. When I saw the new iMacs, the only thing I didn't like was the glossy screen, but everything else was awesome about the iMac. In the end, I decided that the glossy screen wasn't SO bad. The only time it's really irritating is during daytime when the light reflects off the screen. Since my iMac is in my bedroom, I can just pull down the blinds and it'll shield the sunlight from 'attacking' my iMac glossy screen. Or, you can increase the screen brightness, and it helps take away the reflections.. not 100%, but most of it.
I've gotten used to the glossy screen now, and yes, it does make my Powerbook G4 screen look quite dull. Haha. I still use my G4 for school purposes, so it's not going into the can just yet...
Yeah, that's my take on the screen. So, yes, I do like the new iMac screen.

  • Calibrating 24" IMac screen

Hi. I am just switching over from Windows to Mac so please be patient with this question. I am trying to calibrate my monitor using spyder 2 pro. In the setup I have t choose between brightness, contrast, or backlight. problem 1. Next I have to chose color sliders or Kelvin preset sliders. I don't want to be too much of an idiot but I can't find this info. All I see is the one F1/F2 control.
In my digging today I did see where the monitor can be set for all color spaces from a pull down list. Are these monitors that good that they never need recalibrated...do I just pick the space and throw away my Spyder?
Oh, and I tried the 'advanced' by eye option of color calibrating, making the apple match the background, and would prefer a more effective way. My eyes started playing tricks on me.
    Thanks.

Hi, I just calibrate mine for the first time with Spyder 3 Pro so I know a little:
It's better if you start all over again, in case the preferences are set wrong:
    1. Click in Go and select Display, you have to choose that you own an LCD screen.
    2. Select that brightness (F1 and F2) Note: I set my brightness just on the 5th bar from the left to the right
    3. Then after you select it, Spyder should give you some values like Gamma and White Point, I've them as Gamma 2.2 and White Point 6500 K. If the results you have are different, try changing them choosing the option "change this settings"
3a. if you are changing the settings in the target window you could to choose 2.2-6500 or the target you want.
    4. Once you are agree with the targets you have to click next and set gray balance calibration "on"
    5. on the next screen is ask to choose if you want the ambient light compensation on or off. I choose off, because every time I choose on I had a problem with the luminosity, because the iMac screens have this luminosity problem and they reflect so much light, therefore either you choose off and thats it or you choose on.
5a. if you choose on, you have to control the environment light, e.g. close your binds or turn off the light, etc. Do this until you get a "Moderately Low" value, which is the best value for editing pictures.
    6. the next steps are easy, just follow the on-screen steps and voilà!!
Note: do not change the icc settings (preferences>advance settings) leave the value in 2.0 because the iMac wont recognize the 4.0 icc file.

  • Ghost image on top of screen in the menu bar...

I've use an alternative black and white screensaver to try to get rid of that ghost image or look like "ink" going down on the upper right of my screen but it's still comming back and getting worst every week...., there is also a "grey" line all the way horizontaly also on top ... and even worst, i see my user name ghost image even when the screen is black ! i don,t think i'll be able to get rid of that and my question is , does applecare cover that kind of weird thing ? ... i didn't buy the applecare yet my computer is just 6 month old ... is that problem cover by the warranty

    Continued from above post:
And, you can search for the term: "Image Persistence" to find more.
Basically, the information from Apple says that to make a burned-in image disappear, you need to leave the computer off for a period of time equal to (or greater than) the time the image was displayed on the screen. But, that may not be possible when you consider that some images are on the screen the whole time the computer is off. So, it might mean turning a computer off for days in some cases.
I've made them go away temporarily by turning off the computer for 24-hours. And, also by displaying a pure white image on the screen for 6 or 8 hours. But, the second method was less effective.
The solution of turning it off was effective until the machine got hot again. Once it got really hot, the previous images re-appeared (further indicating that temperature impacts this problem).
My personal lesson from all of this is to not buy another computer from Apple that has a built-in screen.
My old LCD panel from Best Buy only cost me around $200 and it's still perfect after around 3 years.
Too bad the problems with both of my iMac G5's prevented me from owning them beyond 6 months each. I've never gotten rid of any computer I've ever owned that fast before (or since).
Between 2 iMac G5 computers (both different revisions), I've been through:
    3 LCD panels
1 Logic-Board (would have been 2, got rid of the other as it was failing)
    1 Mouse
    1 Keyboard
    1 Power Supply
    1 Front Bezel
Neither Logic board was replaced for fan noise. They were both actual failures.
All 3 LCD panels were having burn-in issues
the mouse button was sticking (the very day it arrived)
The keyboard actually cracked on it's own
    The power supply smoked
The front bezel was broken when it arrived.
And, there's probably a few items I can't think of at the moment.
The unfortunate thing, is that I have probably owned 100 computers or more in my time (used to be really heavy into them), and I don't think I ever had that many parts fail among the entire lot of them (except for the 2 iMac G5 systems).
Before my iMac G5's, I had never left a computer with a service tech. But, thanks to my iMac G5's, I got to know the local service guy very, very, very well. He knows who I am immediately when I call.
I hope to never have that sort of problem again. Here's hoping for a good Power Mac replacement (please Apple, no more systems with built-in monitors).

  • My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet".How can I change ip address?

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • I have a Thunderbolt iMac 27" with a Thunderbolt Display attached.  I would like to use the iMac and Thunderbolt display in Target Display Mode for my new Thunderbolt MacBook Pro.  So far, it seems I can only use the iMac screen itself.  How do I do this?

When I press the Command + F2, the iMac screen becomes a secondary for the MacBook Pro, and the Thunderbolt Display becomes the primary screen for the iMac.  I was hoping that both screens would become secondaries for the MacBook Pro.  Does anyone know how I should proceed?  I have tried to connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Pro, and the iMac to the Thunderbolt Display via the separate Thunderbolt cable, but there was no difference.  And since the MacBook Pro only has the one Thunderbolt port, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.
Having said that all the language about TB would suggest that this would be possible. http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    High performance on display.
Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

  • Any external monitors as good as imac screen for text?

    hi all.
this is my first mac.  it's a new 21.5inch imac with a 2.7ghz i5 proc running OS X 10.7.3 and 12 Gigs of RAM (8 Gigs from crucial for $50, who can resist?)
i've got it hooked up to an external samsung syncmaster B2330 running in 1920x1080, which is this monitor's native resolution.  works fine.  it's hooked up via the dvi port on the screen via the mini-displayport to dvi adapter for the mac.  i switch this monitor to the vga port when i want to use it as my pc monitor also running at 1920x1080.  there is a source button on the monitor.  very convenient.
the issue is that they text on this screen when coming from the mac is not as clear was when coming from the pc despite the fact that the vga port provides much less bandwidth than the dvi port the mac uses.  i've read that the mac and the pc display text on screen using different methods.  my pc uses an nvidia display graphics card.  i believe mac use ati based hardware.
there appears to be much more interpolation when displaying text from the mac.  perhaps this is a text size issue i'm not sure.  either way i read a lot on this monitor and need it to be as good as possible for that purpose.
so the question is, does anyone have experience with an external monitor that is as good as the imac screen for text display.  i can't use the thuderbolt display or a cinema display since they don't switch to different ports allowing my to use a single external monitor for two machines.  i'm willing to spend up if there is a reason to do so.  i'm on these computers a lot.  i work from home with some regularity and my job is all about reading.
    any help is appreciated.
    best, c

I have an dell 24" lcd as 2ed monitor and text look as clear as the imacs screen
but it having a t-nfilm lcd panel vs. the imacs ips panel the colour and contast look worse

and it look the same when I boot up in win7 using bootcamp

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • How to i fix a flicker on my iMac screen?

My imac screen has just started flickering. I have researched it and it already a promblem with other mac's. How is this problem fixed? Thanks

You could reset the pram and smc to see if that helps. I would however suggest if the machine is within waranty you contact your local Apple store as this sounds like  a hardware fault to be honest.

  • How to keep iMac screen black while keeping secondary monitor running for visual experiments in Matlab

    Hi,
I'm trying to run a visual experiment using PsychToolbox in Matlab.
I've attached a secondary monitor to my iMac for this purpose and I'm having difficulties trying to
    'black out' the iMac screen.
I need the secondary monitor to run at a refresh rate of 120Hz and at linearised luminance (did this for my secondary monitor),
so I can't really use my iMac screen. However, i need my iMac screen to be darken out because I'm doing a vision experiment.
I tried dimming my iMac screen but it doesn't go completely dark. I tried Ctrl+Shift+Eject (or was it Command) but it will darken both
monitors. I also tried mirroring, but it doesn't seem to work too.
I'm really stuck and any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
    shui
    NB:I'm using OS X Version 10.8.3.

I do not know the details of your experiment, but creating a black monitor is not difficult. For example a completely black page, e.g. in Power Point, set to fill the screen?
The advantage of doing this with PP is that you can move in to or out of the black page with just the space bar. You can set up your monitors so PP is displayed on just one monitor.

For a couple of months now my 24" iMac screen keep misting up behind the glass around 30 mins after booting - anyone know a resolution for this? Will Apple replace the screen even though i've had it around 4/5 years now?

It is common to get condensation between the display and front glass panel, if it is humidity and cool in your office or home.
A few things that you might try, are
    1. Reduce the level humidity with a dehumidifier.
    2. Leave the iMac on longer until the condensation dissipates.
    3. Remove the front panel yourself and clean between the display and glass.
Will Apple replace the screen even though i've had it around 4/5 years now?
No, but if you contact your local Apple Store or AASP you can schedule an appointment to have it dried and cleaned.
