I seem to have two home folders?

I don't know how this happened (perhaps when I upgraded to Tiger?), but I seem to have two home folders.
The “real” one has the “house” icon and is in the proper place: Macintosh Hard Drive > Users > tim (my username). The duplicate does not have the house icon and is at the root level of my HD.
Both folders have mostly the same contents: ViaVoice, Sites, Public, Pictures, Music, Movies, Desktop, Documents, Library. The differences are that the “real” home folder (the one with the house icon) has icons on all of the subfolders too, while the “fake” one has blank subfolders. The real folder has the actual contents of my desktop in its desktop folder while the fake one does not. The “fake” home folder, however, has a crossed out pencil icon at the top of the window (meaning the folder is unchangeable?).
Is it safe to delete the “fake” home folder and how do I do so?
Thanks.

It should be perfectly safe to trash the "fake", as it cannot possibly be being used, after checking (you've already done it, I'm sure) that it contains nothing you want.
Have a Finder window open so that you can see the "fake". Launch Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities) and type:
rm -R
Type a <space> after the R
Drag the "fake" folder into the Terminal window. The folder will not move, but the line in Terminal will now be completed with the path to the "fake". Hit <return>.
If the "fake" has gone that's it. If there is an error message in Terminal then do exactly the same, but using:
sudo rm -R
…<space>, drag folder. After hitting <return> you will get a "password:" prompt. Type carefully (it will not show on screen), hit <return> again. Poof!

  • On shared home network computer, why do I have TWO home folders?

When I connect to my G5 (from my Intel iMac) on my wireless network the first window that comes up contains folders for the G5, public folders for each one in the family, and my home folder (accessible) on the G5 (which contains folders for my Desktop, Documents, etc.),
When I click on the G5 folder and go to Users, I see what I'm assuming is a duplicate of my home folder, but it has a red circle with a minus sign and I am unable to access it (even when tI try to change permissions via the Get Info window).
My question is why do I have duplicate home folders and should my accessible home folder be INSIDE the Users folder? What do I do about the home folder whose permissions I can't seem to alter?

Don't know, but you might get an answer posting to the Getting Online and Networking forum.

  • I seem to have two library folders.

One in Macintosh HD and the other in my use folder. What should I do?

This is correct - all is well. One Library is for the overall system (all user accounts). The other one is just for your user account.
    luciano991,
Just to elaborate with one example. If you install a browser plugin in the /Library folder that plugin will be available to every user account on your machine. If you install that plugin in the ~/Library folder (your user folder) that plugin will only be available to you and no one else. Useful knowledge to have if you share your machine with others.

  • How did I get two "home folders"?

I suddenly got into problems with my backup because the home folder did not have the usual content. When I try to see what happened, it looks like I have two "home" folders.
When I select Go>Home from the men, it looks like this:
And when I click on the Data drive below the Data folder, it looks like this:
The juliusson-folder in the second image is the one that I thought was the home folder. It contains the stuff that I want to back up.
Can someone see from this what could be wrong? I don't really know how it should look.
When this happened, I also lost my user settings.

I don't know if I moved the Home folder out of the start up drive on purpose It could have been part of my original configuration.
I set up my computer years ago by following some online instructions for an optimised set up for Photoshop work. I have three drives installed. One 1TB drive and two 2TB drives. The instructions that I followed were meant to put the system and programs on one drive (also used as scratch drive) and then have images and other stuff on the other two. Those two were set up as a mirrored RAID configuration.
Everything has worked fine for over three of years. Could the problems be caused by an accidental folder move?
It's hard to understand how an accidental folder move would cause this - the home folder path is also set within the system configuration. That means you can't just use any old folder as the home folder location.
I guess it's possible an accident moved it, but then there would have been some user interaction to have agreed to use it in the new location. It seems likely that you somehow managed to use the OS when the Data disk was offline - the folder got created in place of the old home folder, that caused a new one to be made (new home folders get the default template with Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures etc).
Have you got another user account on the system? Is that user an admin?  Does that user work OK?
You will need an admin account to fix this issue, please create one & leave the home folder for the admin on the main boot disk.
Do you have any data that you need within the current home folder (the new one inside the Data folder)?
Your original settings will be saved in the original home folder, but that is not being used at present. If you can abandon the new home folder here is what I suggest…
Disable automatic login if it is enabled - you need to stop logging in as 'juliusson' whilst you fix this, it can be re-enabled when it is fixed.
Create a new admin user account in 'System Preferences > User & groups', this is as a backup to allow you to manage the computer whilst fixing the home folder.
Reboot, login as the new admin account.
In 'System Preferences > User & groups', unlock the panel with the admin password (click the padlock)
Select the 'juliusson' user account, right click (or ctrl+click) the name & select 'Advanced Options…' in the popup.
Look at the 'Home Directory:' path. That needs to be set to the old location. By default that should be /Users/juliusson, yours looks like it should be  /Volumes/Data/juliussonIf you are unsure use the Finders 'Go menu > Go to Folder…' to open '/Volumes/Data/juliusson' confirm that it contains some of your old user files.*
Save the correct path in the 'Home Directory' setting & reboot (do not edit any other Advanced fields)
*NOTE: In steps 6 you probably will not see the correct path since the Data folder is occupying the same location that the Data disk uses. To get around this you will need to rename the Data folder insider /Volumes, and reboot. I'd suggest you move the user home inside the Data folder to a new location as a backup & then delete the entire Data folder in /Volumes/. A reboot will be required to allow the Data disk to mount into the /Volumes/Data location. Once it mounts correctly login should work.
You can merge the home folders as Barney suggested, but this is probably safest via a manual approach unless you are willing to spend time & are experienced in comparing files with apps the can do selective copying (ChronoSync for example).
Please ask if you are unsure about any of this - it's major changes to your user data setup - a full backup is essential before beginning. Setting the home path is the correct way to relocate a home folder once the data is moved.

  • Merging two home folders

    Hello,
I had to reinstall Tiger and I now have two home folders: my original and a new one under a different shortname. My problem is there's a lot of things now in the new home folder (like new mail messages) that I'd like to merge with the old one, and I want to old one to be the only one.
I'm not good at this, and I'd like to do this right. It all started with printing problems and a phone call to Apple Support. I did this whole mess on Friday the 13th. No superstition there, huh?
    Michael

Select both home folders in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu; under Ownership & Permissions, check that you're listed as the owner of both folders. If you are, locate the items in both home folders you want to keep and place them in your current home folder. When you've moved over all of the data you want, rename the old home folder in the Finder and use ChangeShortName to change the short name of your current account to that of the old account.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS3 swatch folders - I seem to have two?

I notice that I have two swatch folders.

    C:\Documents and settings\all users\Application data\Adobe Illustrator CS3 settings\Swatches
    The other in:
    C:\Program files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Presets\Swatches
Why are there two different swatch folders?
Do I have them stored incorrectly on my C:\ drive?
    Thanks

  • I seem to have two apple id's. How do I get rid of one?

I am trying to access the Cloud to find a lost document, but I seem to have two apple id's, one is verified. I can't access cloud. How can I do that? Is there any other way to find my document? It means another week of work if not.

    Hi SGayleC,
It appears that your iCloud account on your Mac is still associated with the old email address.  On your Mac, In System Preferences, are you able to click on iCloud and sign out of your old account?   If so, you should then be able to sign in with your correct Apple ID and password.
I'm including some information on this below, and a link to our Apple ID support team if you need it.
OS X Yosemite: If you sign out of iCloud
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18999?viewlocale=en_US
OS X Yosemite: If you sign out of iCloud
If you sign out in iCloud preferences, your iCloud mail, calendars, reminders, notes, and documents stored in iCloud are removed from your Mac. If you have photos in My Photo Stream that aren’t imported, they’re removed from your Mac. Your bookmarks and Reading List remain in Safari, but the iCloud Tabs list of webpages open on your other devices is no longer available.
When you sign out of iCloud, you’re asked whether you want to keep a copy of the data for Contacts and Safari passwords. If you keep copies of the iCloud data, iCloud doesn’t keep the copy up to date with changes on your other devices.
Copy iCloud documents and data before signing out
Before signing out of iCloud, you can copy or archive iCloud documents and data to your Mac.
iCloud Drive: For instructions on copying documents to your Mac, see Store documents with iCloud Drive.
Documents and data you copy to your Mac aren’t kept up to date with changes on your other devices.
After signing out of iCloud on your Mac, you can still access your iCloud documents and data on your other devices set up for iCloud and on iCloud.com. If you sign in to iCloud again on your Mac, your iCloud documents and data reappear on your Mac.

  • I seem to have two icloud accounts--how can i consolidate?

I seem to have two iCloud accounts--how do I consolidate?

If your second account is actually an iCloud account with data in it, as opposed to a login for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match (which isn't actually anything to do with iCloud itself) you can sign in with it in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars and its data will appear alongside the main account. (You can't use PhotoStream and a few other facilities with this secondary account, and you don't get 'push' email, only checking at intervals).
If the second ID is in fact only for iTunes just go on as you are: there is no conflict about doing this and you won't even notice as Keychain will log you in with the correct ID in each case. It's also better security not to have your iTunes login also your email address, given the number of complaints about hacked iTunes accounts.

Thunderbird does not use a Spam folder. If your email provider does you may need to subscribe to it if you have an IMAP account.
Go to File-Subscribe and see what you see there.

On camera roll I seem to have two differen photos in the same location. How do I resolve this? I cannot transfer one of each of these photos to my macbook.  Any ideas?

An hour-long phone discussion with Apple Support yesterday solved this question and sorted a couple of others.
As for this one, do not ignore any messages which pop up when you plug in your iPhone and ask "Trust this computer?".  The correct reply is "Yes", not "Cancel".
OK, you cancelled like I did, thinking "What on earth is this for?".  Mistake.  You can force the issue by having iTunes open when you next plug in your iPhone.  Tell the iPhone that it can trust its old friend, your computer and voila!  Your photos can download into iPhoto again.

  • I seem to have two different apple ID's, one of which is my email address.  How can I cange it, as I can't clink on it.

I seem to have two apple ID.s, and one is my email address.  How do I correct this as I can't delete and replace the ID?

Saw this in another forum. You could try it.
Under the FaceTime Account you can only have 1 email set up, but below that you can set up multiple email accounts as phone numbers, I do it all the time.
FaceTime is set up with my account, but since the iPad is more of a family device (its mine, but everyone is allowed to use it), my sister programed her email so that her friends can call her on the iPad and so did my Mom and brother. Their friends dial their numbers (email addresses) and the iPad still rings even though the main number is mine account.

  • I have two homes and I would like to keep my iPad2 in sync with my desktops in each home. How do I do that?

I have two homes in two different staes and I spend time between the two. I would like to keep my iPad2 in sync with my desktops (PCs) in each of the homes as I travel between the two. When I try to sync with the second PC ( with my iTunes ID) it threatens to wipe out my iPad2. I just want to keep the two desktops and my iPad in sync. Please help.

Put a copy of the most current iTunes Media library onto a USB hard drive. Replace the older library with the newer one. Repeat the process when you return to the other home.
Or you can sync everything to iCloud where it is accessible anywhere you can connect via your Apple ID.

Does anyone have problems with sent messages not showing in their Mail? I have two sent folders when really I only want one. Any tips?

    Not sure if this is a fix, but I tried sending myself a test email from only  the Bcc field, and lo and behold it now shows the Bcc field in all sent item previews;
...maybe leaving the 'To' field blank on purpose forced Mail to show it.
Rebooted the Mail program, still there - rebooted the machine, still there. Hope this is still relevant and it works for you too - J.

  • I notice that in the new update to Firefox if I have two bookmark folders with the same name Firefox will end up deleting one of them.

Both of these problems with the bookmarks started occurring after I installed the latest update to Firefox.
I frequently have bookmark folders of the same name under the older version of Firefox and it has never been a problem before. It is now, and I notice that after I've created two folders with the same name Firefox will end up deleting one of the folders, almost always the older of the two folders (the one created first, chronologically).
I have also noticed that with the new update Firefox will occasionally fail to open all bookmarks in Tabs if I've asked it to do so. I can simply close Firefox and reopen the program and it will work again, but I don't know why this bug is occuring in the first place.

You are using two IP address ranges.. which results in the printer being cut off from the other network..
Why do you have two networks?? It is always better in home situations to run one network.
If you have work setup with an enterprise level router you can setup routes between the two networks.. this is not possible on domestic level apple routers.
