I set MIDI CHANNEL to receive a specific Channel, it nevertheless receives OMNI.

When in LOGIC PRO, I set the MIDI CHANNEL to receive a specific Keyboard Controller assigned Channel, on any channel strip, that strip continues to receive OMNI and respond to ALL Keyboards plugged in by USB.  What am I doing wrong?  It has to be so simple I am missing it!
Thanks in advance!

No problem, just to let you know, this works perfectly here.
This same sort of craziness happens to me when I am explaining things to other people so I understand completely.  I usually use Digital Performer.  I am trying to make all of this work in LOGIC as a means of using Synths with a Live Orchestra in rehearsals and concert.  Unlike DP, Logic comes with all of the needed sounds, and can be set up in a template that Conductors can simply download.
I've used another "system" with MIDI instruments and so forth since 1980 (yes I'm that old!)... but LOGIC and MAINSTAGE eliminate the need for modules and a whole bunch of hardware.
If we could speak or iCHAT on the phone, I sure would appreciate it.  It has to be something VERY simple that I am not seeing because of my unfamiliarity with LOGIC.  The good news is, I have a system now that works for MAINSTAGE.  The better news would be, making all of this work in LOGIC and the template I have already designed.  My email is [email protected] if you would like to exchange numbers.
Thanks again!
I'm able to receive MIDI data on independent channels, with each channel being routed to the correct instrument. Problem has to be in your setup.

  • Setting midi channel for ES2 in logic express 9

i have a track selected with an ES2 patch
I can play from my midi keyboard, sounds good and I can see the midi coming in from my midi channel
problem is it's not the midi channel i selected in logic for the track
it appears everything with logic is in omni mode
i can play one of my keyboards in channel 3 and the other keyboard in channel 5 and both trigger in logic channel set to midi channel 7
    please, any suggestions?

Unfortunately it did not work. I am playing in midi channel 6, and it shows properly on the midi in/out panel near the bottom of the screen by the numerator and cpu meter. Shows the midi notes coming in just fine
I have my software synth track selected as midi channel 3, and it plays this track....while my controller is in channel 6
I can also set iLogic Express to play an external midi track to any midi channel and it will still play no matter what channel my incoming midi channel is set to (1 - 16)
Midi is getting into Logic Express just fine
So why will it not only play in the midi channel I have selected for the track?
I also want to use an additional midi keyboard (or usb) to play a different track and midi channel, but they all play as if in omni mode regardless of the channel set from the transmitting keyboard and the information showing on the midi in/out panel
I am using an old Motu 8x8 midi interface into an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile which has one single midi in and out (no midi thru) to the mac.
Works like a charm except in Logic Express
Thanks for your help - I'm truly lost..... and I did read the manual cover to cover to try and find the answer
    Thanks

  • Multitimbral Instrument Plugins (ie 1 instument many midi channels)

I am using SampleTank and Kontakt and they way I use them just does not seem right ! The problem starts here..
    - when I add Kontakt to a Instrument Strip the Midi channel is assigned in the strip in the environment window.
    - If I create multiple tracks with the same Instrument and change the midi channel of a track they all change - Doh... not very logical.
The only work around to this that I have found is to create multiple instrument stips on env window and assign them all to the same instrument (ie instrument 1).... then give each a serperate midi channel - this creates lots of channels with the same audi meters bobbing up and down.
Sure I can use multiple instances of the same plugin (as with EXS24) but that is not very memory or processor effecient...
Now I know I can create Aux Channels and route channels to each - but you get in a "too many channels" mess !
So am I missing something is there an easy & logical way to put an instrument on a channel and route multiple midi tracks to it ?
Did I explain the problem clearly ? Any help/advice/guidance very welcome !
    Cheers
    Ian

    Hello !
You have to go in the environment page, instruments, and create a new multi instrument, which you will name Kontakt for instance. Activate all channels by ticking each check box in the instrument icon in the environment page. Then open another environment page where you will choose to see the Audio objects, I.E. the mixer in that case. Drag a cable from you newly created multi instrument to the channel strip containing your Kontakt sampler. You get then a message saying that the ports are in use, do you want to change the assignment, and you answer YES. Now in the arrangement page, set midi channel of Kontakt to All. Now you can create Midi tracks for each midi channel. Multiple outputs are either managed inside the sampler itself or using the Multiple Output version of the plugin, depending of which plugin model.
    Hope this helps

  • Filtering Midi from All to one specific channel

    Hi!
I have a midi device that sends midi to all midi channels without any possibility to change this setting on the device, and there is no software or driver to it either. I want to make the midi end up in one specific channel only.
I'm running a system with three different USB-midi devices so a global setting wouldn't work. Logic recognizes all devices separately, so there should be some way to transform all midi-messeges from just this device to one channel, but my question is: how do i do that?
    Logic X (10.0.4)
    Mac OSX 10.8.5
    Thanks!
    /Joel

This is a bit embarrassing, but i just found that my device does not at all send to all midi channels, but just to nr 10. So I guess i don't really have a problem anymore... The questing remains unaswered, how ever.

  • Hypersonic 2 setting up seperate midi channels ...

Hey i just purchased hypersonic 2 seems amazing, first off the plug in is not even showing the way it looks in the instructions, only certain things are showing not even the keyboard keys until i hit them , kinda strange.
my main thing is how to set up logic so that i can use the 16 channels seperatly in different tracks, any one shine some light??

Insrt the Hypersonic plug on audio instrument 1.
Open the environment. Create a new "multi instrument", call it "Hypersonic". Make sure the little checkbox next to the icon is unchecked.
On the multi instrument object, click on each of the numbers 1-16 to make the 16 subchannels available.
Option-click on the output cable, and select "Audio Instrument 1" to connect your multi instrument to the audio instrument channel holding Hypersonic.
Back in the arrange page, create a new track, and select the "Hypersonic 1" instrument subchannel. Then use the "Create Track with Next Instrument" key command to create tracks for "Hypersonic 2" through "Hypersonic 16".
Now you have 16 tracks that each play through the 16 MIDI channels on Hypersonic.

  • How to record multiple midi channel data to multiple midi tracks in Logic?

    Dear All,
I have an electric organ from Yamaha, and it has 3 keyboards, upper keyboard, lower keyboard, and pedal keyboard. They are all running in different midi channels:
i.e. upper keyboard: midi channel 1
    lower keyboard: midi channel 2
    pedal keyboard: midi channel 3
When I try to create 3 midi tracks in Logic to listen to the 3 keyboards, I found that their midi signal just mixed together. Meaning, all 3 midi tracks can listen to all 3 keyboards...
Please noted that I am using a single USB Midi interface (1-in, 1-out) to connect the electric organ with macbook.
Can someone give me a help here? I suppose I can setup 3 midi tracks in logic to listen to 3 keyboards signal separately.
    Thanks,
    Eric

I had a similar situation when I first got LS and received this useful reply from Apple-
in Settings>Recording, check the box for "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording".
Be aware that the Settings are song specific, compared to Preferences, which apply
to all songs. Set your controllers to send on specific MIDI channels and set the same channels in the inspector of your tracks.
I have a 2x2 midisport however, so I don't know if you will have an issue because you have only 1 I/O.
If so, you might have to learn about 'Multi instruments", I haven't had the need.
Yes, this is correct. We have two recording stations with ESI M4U 4x4 midi interfaces. We are recording 4 instruments at the same time and they all send their data on a different channel. I created midi instruments for all of them in Environment just to have them more easily available in the Arrange window. Also make sure you have the correct midi channel set per track in Logic.
When the option to "auto demix by channel" is set and you are recording, it may seem that Logic is recording only on one channel (only one region being created). But as soon as you hit stop, it will expand to multiple channels.

  • Help! I can't get Mainstage (2 or 3) to map patches to different midi channels

I recently upgraded to Mainstage 3, partly in the hope that I could solve this problem I've had.
So, I use an M-Audio Axiom Pro 61 and I want to have 2 channel strips on 1 patch: an organ sound controlled by the keyboard and some drum samples controlled by the drum pads.
In layout mode, I've set the keyboard to Channel 1 & the Drum pads to Channel 10 and in edit mode I've set each channel strips' midi input to the appropriate multitimbral settings.
When I play the drum pads I only get drums - so that's working fine - but when I play the keyboard it triggers both channels, and no amount of tweaking has got me round this issue.
I've tried to go into the Axiom Pro settings and change stuff there but haven't had much luck (though i'm not as well learned with the inner settings of the keyboard so I wonder whether there's something I can do there)
Can anyone help? I really want to multitask!
    Thanks

For this scenario, you add 2 MIDI actvity or keyboards to your workspace. Name one "Organ" abd the other one "Drums" and assign both to your Axiom, but set the MIDI channel for the "Organ" to 1 and for the "Drums" to 10. Here's where the splitting by MIDI channel happens.
Now, switch from Layout to Edit mode and set the MIDI input of the organ channel strip to Keyboard "Organ" and the MIDI input of the drum channel strip to Keybaods "Drums". The Multitimbral setting in that section converts the MIDI events from the Keyboard objects and if the instrument reacts to all channels, it won't make a difference. This is meant for some AUs, that support Multitimbrality, like NIs Kontakt or the Apple's Vintage B3, that can make different sounds for upper, lower and pedal manuals.
Small re-cap: If you need to split by MIDI channels, you need to do this in Layout mode by adding objects, that react to a specific MIDI channel only.
    Hope this helps!

  • One track-16 midi channels - how to unify?

    Hi Forum
A specifik problem have occured for me.
I use in one track a multiinstrument with EWQLSO/KONTAKT as an host.

I think using the Functions/Transform/Demix command to separate the track into individual MIDI channels would be the easiest option, then he could used the merge command to put them back together.

    p.s.
I originally was going to post the solution below, until
    I reread the question.
I think he wants to change specific notes (ie: D#) across multiple MIDI channels.
He must have the AU MIDI channel set to "All" and changed MIDI transmission channels on his controller so he ends up with a multi channel track.
If that's it, the easiest way is to use the Matrix editor piano keyboard to select the note (it selects all channels) and then double click on a selected note to open the event editor which will have the all of the correct notes selected.

  • Corresponding Logic 16 Midi channels to Korg Triton 16 midi channels

Heyyy---- I use to use protools, but I switched over to Logic. What I do is, I recorded all my beats inside my triton., using all 16 tracks in my triton. When I finish I would then slave my triton to pro tools. Then I would create 16 midi channels in pro tools. I would then arm all 16 channels(Channel 1 in protools reads only what is in track 1 one on the triton, Channel 2 in PT only reads track 2 in the triton and so on till 16). Since my triton is now using protool's midi clock---When I hit record on Pro Tools..it then records midi data from the triton onto the Pro tools midi channels, each unique to the tritons specifications datawise.(1to1,2to2,3to3....). hahaha its a funny way to make beats, but yeah...I still like to make beats inside the keyboard. My question is, In Logic how do you set this up in the environment with one keyboard--- like I previously did in protools! Million Dollar Question. Thank you very much!!!

Okay, thank you very much Bee Jay. my ID seems to have switched on me. Heres the thing...Where do I find the Multiplayer Record mode button. Not only that. By multi instrument.... do you mean mult-timberal external midi????? also...Do I need to change my environment??? Thank you very much, how do I name a whole group to be triton...so when ever i am opening a new session...there is automatically 16 tracks for triton...and 16 for something else...you know..all midi...thank you veryyy much

Kbd 2, set to transmit on midi channel 2 and assign the EVP88 to receive on midi channel 2 in the Object parameter box.
Then shift select both in the track list.

  • Assign instruments to Midi channels?

Hi. How do i set up instruments/patches in mainstage and only have them work on specific midi channels?
For example being able to have 16 patches, each with an individual midi channel.
    Is this possible in Mainstage3?

    Hi
Use the "MultiTimbral" function in the Channel Strip Inspector to specify which strips respond to which MIDI channels, per patch.

  • How Can I separate my MIDI Channels with layered instruments in MainStage 2 With my Axiom 61?

I have been at it for 3 days straight. I want to play an internal instrument (EVB3 for example) and trigger samples with the EXS24 without triggering notes from the other instrument. I have my keyboard set to MIy help meDI channel 1 and my drum pads set to MIDI channel 10. The still play together. I've tried changing MIDI input on both channel strips to multitimbral, Channel 1 for the keyboard and channel 10 for the drum pads. Still playing together. I've tried changing attributes in the Mapping screen. Still...
I don't think its the Axiom. I've tried changing MIDI CC numbers but then it won't talk to either instrument. I'm currently using MIDI cables into a 3rd generation M-Box. I've tried using USB as well. Please, somebody help me!!

Sorry for the late responce, I've been in program mode and haven't had a chance to come back to this.
I figured it out. It was an option that I had over looked in the Assignments & Mapping tab in Edit Mode. At the bottom of the window that says All Devices. In that menu there is another tab that says Channel 1-16. If you click where it says Unassigned, down in the Screen Control Inspector there is a checked box that says "Send unassigned MIDI to all Channel Strips". If you uncheck that box then everything works perfectly. It is a little extra work having to assign the keyboard everytime you ad a channel strip but when you have to do some serious programming it's worth it.
Anyone who needs to program with multiple devices should uncheck this right out of the gate. It will save you from pulling your hair out.
Thank you Bruno for your help. It is much appreciated.

  • Why does Playback stop when I have an external MIDI channel?

I finally have to try to sync up external gear with Mainstage 2.2.2. This time it's sending midi clock to an Akai MPK25. I set up the external midi instrument channel, set the channel's midi out to port 1 on the Akai, set the Akai to external clock. The Akai seems to pick up the tempo (mostly) but my Playback instances that start with Play action cut out after about 1 measure (yes they're set to Loop).
Doesn't mater which instance. The clock keeps going but there's a substantial lag to the transport controls. After a few seconds I can retrigger the Playback that stopped and then it loops as it should.
As soon as I delete the external midi strip, everything is back to normal. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it fixable? Maybe an Akai thing?
I've wrestled with MS to get it gig-worthy for a year and some new bug always seems to pop up.
    System:
    iMac 20" Core2Duo 2GHz, 4GB RAM

    I try 2/3 things.
    - monitor sleep after 1 minute
    - computer sleep after 3h
    - itunes playing songs
.....after a minute, monitor sleep and so does itunes....
VLC doesn't have this issu (luckyly)....

  • Connecting kurzweil sp88 to GB I want to connect my Kurzweil sp88 to GB. The Kurzweil has a baffling array of buttons and possible MIDI channels. It also has the old style MIDI plug ins. I've got the MIDI out connected to my MacBook Pro via USB adapter.

I have my Kurzweil connected to my MacBook Pro via an adapter (old style MIDI from Kurzweil to USB adapter connecting to Mac). The Kurzweil has a baffling array of buttons and possible MIDI channels. Can anyone please tell me which of the channels I should use? Also, should I leave the MIDI In cable out of the Kurzweil? Thanks for as detailed an answer as possible. If you like you can respond directly to me at [email protected]

First of all I do not own this keyboard. But a quick look at the manual (found on the internet) says that when first powered up the SP88 is in Internal Sounds mode. Meaning you hear the sounds selected when playing the keyboard. It also stated that the default Midi Transmit Channel is Midi Channel #1.
Looks like you would need to go to the SP88 Keyboard's MIDI SETUP and simply select LOCAL OFF. Now the keyboard should be ready to transmit Midi Out only and no internal sounds should be heard.
Next you may or may not need to do this but you might need to go into the Utilities Folder found in your Applications Folder on your Mac and double click AUDIO MIDI SETUP the keyboard Icon. Figure #1 below.
Next you need to make a physical connection from the Midi Out of the SP88 to the Midi In on your Midi Interface. Figure #3 below. You may need to Click on Add Device first. Figure #2 below.
In the examples shown below I have a Yamaha Electronic Drum Kit that is Midi Out only... not USB out. I had to plug a Midi cable from the Midi Out Port on the back of my Drum Module to the Midi In Port on the back of my Motu 828 Audio Inferface which is connected to my Mac. Next I created the Audio Interface and Drum Module "Devices" as mentioned above.
I then double clicked on the Drum Module and made my Midi Out Selections. Figure #4 Below. And once it was setup and the icons closed I used my mouse to draw a virtual cable connection from the Drum Module Out to the Audio Interface In. Figure #3 below. This is how I got my Midi Devices to talk to one another.
Once you have made your setup as I have outlined create a MIDI Instrument Track in Garageband, select an instrument for example a Piano then Record Enable that track in Garageband and see if you now hear what you are playing. In this example the SP88 is a Midi Controller only and you will only hear sounds selected in Garageband which is what you want.
Keep in midi your setup may be different than mine. You can keep your SP88 Keyboard on the default Midi Channel #1. That would be a good place to start. Garageband receives Midi on all channels.

  • Multiple midi channels in one region

    Hello,
I've been using Logic since version 4.7, but haven't tried the following in a version newer than 5.5.1. Not sure what functionality might have changed, so here goes...
I'm having issues with having notes with different midi channel assignments in a single region. I have 3 audio instrumets on midi channel one, two, and three, respectively. I have a midi instrument whose midi channel is set to all, that is patched to all three audio instruments in the environment. The track containing my region is playing back on the midi instrument, not the individual audio instruments. I have assigned channels 1, 2, and 3 to individual notes in the region, yet when it plays, all 3 audio instruments are triggered for every note rather than only the instrument whose midi channel matches the note's channel.
    Thanks in advance,
    JG

Thanks for the responses! The issue is that the three audio instrument objects in the environment are not respecting it's assigned midi channel. Yes, the channel splitter will split the incoming midi channel, but I shouldn't have to use the splitter if I set the midi channel on instrument 1's parameters pane to channel 1, and if the the midi channel is set to channel 2 on audio instrument 2 ect. So in the above example, no matter how how many different events I send on different midi channels to audio instrument 1, audio instrument 1 should only respond to midi channel 1. However it responds to all midi channels. Again, the channel IS NOT SET TO ALL.
    So here's a simple test:
    -Instantiate Logic's EFM1 on audio instrument 1
-Set audio instrument 1's midi channel in the parameters pane to midi channel 4
-Create a blank midi region with the pencil tool on audio instruments 1's track in the arrange window
-Open up the blank region in the matrix editor
-With the pencil tool, create a few notes.
-Then open up the same region in the event list editor and make sure that all the notes are on a midi channel other that channel 4.
-Play back the region and EFM1 will play back not respecting it's channel assignment!
Hope this clears some stuff up.
