Alright, I've just done the the what is apperantly Apple's "Final Solution" to all iPod problems, the reformat of my iPod using my mom's computer. What this proved is:
A. My USB cable works fine.
B. My iPod is perfectly okay, since iTunes recognized it on her computer.
So the problem has got to lie with the PC (go figure). And I suppose that, while this would eliminate the responsibility of Apple to offer any help to people experiencing this issue, it is still really lame of Appleto not even bother to point us in a general direction to where we could find help.
My next step is a full reformat of my PC, since it used to work on here. Also, an extra bit of info; this whole "ipod not being detected by itunes" problem popped up when I installed a scanner to my computer. This was a few months back before I had to send the thing in to get repaired. So what I did after I installed the scanner was a system restore to before I installed all of the scanner software, and my iPod worked again. I later tried installing the scanner again, and I had the same problem. Except that time, instead of the computer not detecting my iPod, it practically murdered my iPod forcing me to send it in.
My theory at this point is that something in the scanner drivers interfered with my iPod, even though that doesn't really make any sense, it doesn't seem coincidental.
Since I was away from my computer and iPod for a month I wasn't able to system restore back that far again, so I tried uninstalling my scanner software and WIA driver. This hasn't helped one bit.
Anyways, maybe you guys should test you iPods on other computers, and if they work, try to remember if you installed anything the day they stopped working to see if we can find any actual links.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • IPod mini shows up as having 328.9 GB capacity in updater and iTunes

I have a 6 GB mini, and I have updated to the new iTunes since I last used it. So when I connnected it, it showed up as "Data" instead of my iPod name, and iTunes claimed it didn't have any songs on it even though it did. I got the 1.4.1 updater (2006-01-10) and it said it needed update but it only offered a restore option. I went ahead and restored, but when it came back it still said 328.9 GB, both in the updater and in iTunes. So I formated from the control panel, and it correctly read 5.67 GB free. Back to updater, it still reads 328.9. It seems to work, but it worries me that the disk size reads wrong. It claims in iTunes to have used 89.6 GB with 2hundred whatever free. No, I'm not looking at my hard drive, this is the iPod.

Never mind, mystery solved. I had a windows network drive assigned as drive J:, which is the drive my iPod decided to be. So the two conflicted, and iTunes was writing to the network drive.

  • Trouble with 2006-06-28 Updater and iTunes

    Hello all,
Okay so my problem deals more with the software for my iPod rather than the iPod itself. My iPod work wonderfully with no problems whatsoever. (Forget the fact this is my second one because the first one DIED sniff sniff) But here's the thing. I recently installed the latest update for iTunes on my Toshiba laptop and when I went to plug in my iPod it didn't recognize it. So I went to the Apple website and installed the latest updater for my 30GB iPod. But every time I try to update my iPod, I get the following error message: "iPod Service Error"
I have done everything suggested on the iPod support site and I have uninstalled and reinstalled both iTunes and the iPod updater and still nothing seems to be working. I don't think anything is wrong with my iPod but I could be wrong. If anyone has had (or is currently having) this problem could you help me please!!!!!!!!!
    30GB IPOD   Windows XP

I am having a similar problem since the update, but with my iBook and OS X. My iPod isn't showing up in iTunes or OS X.
I have tried to restore the iPod, but it doesn't appear in OS X, so I don't know how I can otherwise do so.

I have tried to connect to the Mac App store & Itunes and it gives me the same error message. Any ideas???

  • I did the iPhone update, and iTunes recognizes iPhone but iPhone doesn't recognize iTunes.

the phone says "connect to iTunes" even when it is connected. iTunes seems to recognize the phone (even though the phone looks inactive).  when looking at the macbook screen, the phone on the screen in itunes displays all my apps and music.  i don't see my photos and my contacts from the macbook view.  i'd like to restore my phone from the back up prior to the update, and i am being prevented from doing so.  help.
prior to this i was having problems with itunes telling me to put in a password to retrieve my backup, and even after putting in my normal password it didn't work.
i did not have it set to encrypted. i've tried all previous passwords ever used in itunes or elsewhere on my computer.
    assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Osx 10.6.8 update and Itunes 11.1 update

I need to update my itunes which requires osx 10.6.8 or later, however this update is unavailable in the hong kong store. I am no longer there, and in Switzerland now, and when i tried to change country/region in Itunes it said i needed to update it.

So is this question about obtaining a retail install Snow Leopard DVD 10.6?
After you get the physical DVD, before you can access Mac App, App, or iTunes
Stores, you need the Combo Update Leopard 10.6.8 v1.1. installed.
Or is it about getting some other software via download, such as iTunes 11.1(.5)?

    Tap your ID
    Tap View Apple ID
    Enter your password
Go to country/region in the popup window to change the store

  • Installed 10.4 update and itunes will not open

Installed itunes10.4 32 bit version - after successful installation itunes will not open
    any advise?

Update to my last post.  I have finally "fixed" whatever problem was causing the Apple software products to malfunction on my PC, Windows Vista 32 Bit SP2.  After updating to iTunes 10.4 and Safari 5.1, a series of error messages would appear:1) AppleSyncNotifier.exe 2) iTuneshelper.exe 3) iTunes Failed to properly install - Error 7 (Windows error 126).  I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes & Safari as well as downdating iTunes to an earlier version, but this had all failed to correct the problem and the error messages still appeared when the programs were suppose to have been removed.
I ended up using the Windows Program Manager (in Control Panel) to remove every single Apple product from my PC, including the Apple Installer.  Then I restarted the system.  Taking bits and pieces of advice from this forum, I started the system, went to the Apple website, downloaded and SAVED the newest iTunes version (which includes QuickTime), but did not run the program.  Then I disconnected from the net, turned off all virus and firewall protections, and finally installed the saved iTunes program.  It took an extraordinarily long time to complete the install, but I was able to restore my libraries from my iPod Touch (4th gen) by performing a simple sync.  I reconnected to the net and updated the device software . . . so far, so good [knock on wood], no error messages yet.  I will add each of the removed programs as they are needed in the future so that whatever conflict exists can be fixed - until then, I'm at least happy to have iTunes back!  Hope this is helpful to someone and saves them the 4 hours it took me to get back on track

  • Slower MBP since 10.5.4 Most Recent Security Update and iTunes 7.7.1(1)

Anyone notice a significant overall slowdown since installing updates to iTunes and the Security Updates that were released recently? My MBP is an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.3GHz with 4GB of memory; it should blaze, and used to, but not anymore. Very noticeable slowdown overall!

After update 10.5.2 there has been performance issues on my MBP as well.
Response performance varies - like your laptop is becoming tired..................
Unfortunately, general freezing of the screen and all control (except power down), happens randomly - I read in another post that this only happens on Battery? - I believe this to be true...........
Longer app loading times and annoyances from spotlight indexing at poor times.
Window memory and size are lost on occasion - having to resize all quite often - crazy.
Dock unhide judder from first mouse activation - I know it's petty, but I think the Dock is worth it.
Sometimes, bootcamp partition desktop icon fails to appear with the other desktop icons, later after spotlight has calmed down.
The last bug is usually a sign to run Onyx maintenance and rebuild spotlight and other preferences.
    Great program.
This usually sorts it out for a week and then the symptoms come back.
Logic Pro seems to take more RAM (I know i need to upgrade - only 3Gb available on my machine - nuts.)
Still a very cool machine though - BF2 and Logic on one laptop.............
Any positive ideas and solutions are welcome.

  • Safari (updates and itunes store) can't connect

When using Safari on my home network I cannot connect to any website. I will get messages such as "Safari can’t open the page “http://www.apple.com/” because Safari can’t connect to the web proxy server (HTTP). To change your proxy settings, open Safari Preferences, click Advanced, and then click Change Settings. For help with this problem, contact your system administrator." I am the network administrator. Also itunes store, and software updates will not connect. Entourage and mail receive mail but with question marks instead of images. Firefox has no problems, and when running network assistants diagnosis all seems OK - all green lights.
My son's identical MacBook (with seemingly identical network airport settings, but running 10.5) will connect to the iTunes store and also to websites using Safari, as will both of our ipod touches. My MacBook will actually connect to the iTunes store using my same network when running WinXP using vmWare fusion.
I have tried to change Safari's proxy setting through its preferences, but the Proxies>change settings button is ghosted - so I have accessed the network settings for my home location to ensure that no proxy checkboxes are checked. (I have tried automatically detect proxy settings, but still no go). I have created new network locations and tried many combinations of settings (network assistant's diagnosis is always all green lights, whenever I have used it.)
I have also emptied the system configuration folder from preferences (along with com.apple.internetconfig.plist, com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist, com.apple.internetconnect.plist) and rebooted with no joy.
I have ensured that I have the current versions of Safari and iTunes installed and am at a loss. I don't know when this first happened, and can't think of a change that I have made that would have precipitated this. Safari does function at work on the work's network, and images do come through to my mail at work. I am assuming that I have a setting at home that is blocking. (I have turned my firewalls off and on to check, but again no success.)
I am about to buy an iPhone and am waiting til I can sort this issue. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Richard.

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If you have Safari 3rd party plugins, they may not be compatible with 10.6. Go here for trouble shooting.
If you use GlimmerBlocker by chance, that could be the culprit. Check out this thread.

Same with any Input Managers. Move any files in the /Library/InputManagers folder to the Trash
If you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
Go to ~/Library/Cookies and move the Cookies.plist file to the Trash.
Try Open DNS - Free / Basic
If Safari still can't open web pages, go to the Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If Safari loads web pages then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
