I spilled diet coke on my macbook

I spilled diet coke on the keyboard of my macbook.  I do have AppleCare Protection. One, is this covered?  If not, how do I clean the keyboard and ensure the computer is not wrecked.

Immediately disconnect all peripherals, power cord & remove the battery.  Turn the computer over with the lid partly open and the hinge facing upward to let the liquid drain.  Do not flop it over and lay it flat - you want to separate it from the moisture.  Place paper or cloth towels under the machine to sop up the mess.
After the computer disgorges whatever you spilled on it, don't turn it on for 72 hours or longer.  You want to computer to dry out completely before turning it on again.
Some users here swear by hairdryers.  Blow drying the innards may bake whatever was in the liquid onto delicate computer components.  Better to let the computer air dry.
Use plain tepid water to clean out the computer.  If you spilled iced beverage more than likely this ice fried the hot motherboard.
Sugary, acidic or milky drinks will almost always cause problems later on as the residue starts slowly corroding the computer innards.
Swab down any sticky parts with distilled water or denatured alcohol.
If none of the above works, you will need to take the computer to a repair shop.

Liquid damage is not covered under Apple's standard 1 year warranty or Apple Care.
NOTE:  If you are out of warranty and purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with.   They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.

    Nooooooo!
      Any suggestions?
shut it off, remove the battery if it can be, unplug it from any powersource and don't turn it on again until you get it looked at by a technician at the Apple store or an AASP.

  • Got diet Coke into my macbook pro, but it still works

    Hi all,
About 2 weeks ago diet coke got sucked into my MBP.  I dried it out, took it to the apple store, got it checked out and it was kept over night to test; came back passing all the tests.
I have witnessed no decrease in speed and the only problem I've had since is I had to restart the computer a couple times due to the trackpad not working.
Is there a possibility of it dying down the road?  I'd rather replace the computer with all my data in tact now than wait for the thing to die.
    Thank you for your help

Be glad it wasn't regular Coke or flies could be a problem.
All kidding aside, your concern about failure is valid as the carbonic acid in fizzy drinks likely accelerates corrosion. Only time will tell how much damage can occur. I highly recommend that you create a bootable clone with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner in order to preserve your data in case of failure or need to troubleshoot.

  • I spilled Iced Tea on my Macbook Air. What should I do?

I spilled Iced Tea on my Macbook Air yesterday afternoon? What should I do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Don't turn on the Mac. It may be damaged, so it's better not to turn it on. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5511
Take it to an Apple Store or reseller. If it was damaged, it's possibly better to replace it, as it may be cheaper

  • I spilled hot chocolate on my macbook air. What should I do?

I spilled hot chocolate on my macbook air. What should I do?

Sticky gooey sweet goodness on electronics.
Dont try to turn it back on, liquids are "rolling havoc" inside any laptop,....damage A leads to B leads to C.
same way you dont plug in a lightbulb standing in a puddle.
Make call for service to Apple for diagnostic / repair.

  • I spilled diet fanta lemon on my macbook pro, it turns on then off

I, stupidly, spilled fanta lemon on a coffee table which flowed over onto my MacBook pro which was powered on. I unplugged it and powered it down, dried it off removed my hard shell case andl eft if to air out for 3 days. When I came back to it and powered it on it boots up and gets to the grey screen when it then powers down. I have also tried booting it in safe boot and I can get as far as the log in screen before it powers down and Ive also tried to boot it in recovery mode but I can ply get so far before it powers down. I was wondering what way I should go from here. Should I leave it for a few more days to dry off? Is ther anything Im not trying? I have it insured, but I dont want to claim on my insurence if I dont have to as my premium will go up.
Any help or advice is greatly appriciated.

    You have no choice though.
    Liquid damage is progressive.
Best option is to take the computer to the nearest Apple store and see what can they do
    to repair the damage.
It is great that you have insurance coverage.
    Best.

  • Sharing my experience, water spill accident on my Retina Macbook Pro

I would like to share my experience to the community and to fellow mac users regarding my water spill accident on my 1-week fresh Retina Macbook Pro.
Before begining, i appologize for gramar or spelling mistakes since I am French and English is not my first language.
    So lets begin ...
My 2006 macbook pro started giving away and i knew that i had to replace it very soon. So i opted for a high end machine because i knew i needed something for at least 5 years.
After much thought, i bought a Retina Macbook Pro since for work i needed a 15 inch screen laptop and portability was key for me.
Normally at work the Retina Macbook Pro sits on an aluminum Rain Design stand, but on thursday, i was at a co-worker office brain-storming for an important presentation. So i had my Retina macbook pro sitting on a small conference table and next to it i had a cup of water (THE CULPRIT), 200 ml to be precise.
I know, i know ... i shouldn't have been drinking a beverage while using my computer at the same time but i'm always careful with my stuff (proof my 2006 macbook pro still lives).
So enough introduction ... After taking a sip from that cup of water i accidently spilled the cup on my keyboard. To be precise i spilled around 160 ml of tap water on the keyboard while the computer was ON (on battery).
I froze for 5 seconds cursing in French, looking at the puddle of water on my keyboard, then i immediatley FORCED shut down the computer.
I ran for paper towels and started absorbing as much as i can, while absorbing the water my fellow co-worker was helping me, and since the power button is so tiny and placed on the keyboard, he accidently turned it back ON again ... I immediatly turned it back off (forced) and kept on absorbing as much liquid as i can.
To my surprise, we kept on bringing paper towels and absorbing ...The water was just sitting on top of the computer and i had the impression that not a whole much was making it inside.
After finsihing the first cleaning process ... i placed two dry paper towels on the keyboard and closed the screen, fliped the computer upside down so it was sitting on the screen. This was on thursday. I DID NOT DISCONNECT THE BATTERY (since i did not have the necessary tools for Apple's alien screws).
Friday morning, when i arrived at the office, i checked the laptop (still haven't turned it on) ... Paper towels were wet, so i changed them ....
I left it over the weekend at work .... doing some research on water spills ... i decided not to use rice or hair dryers or opening the machine ... i estimated that what could've made it through the inside of the laptop was roughly 20 ml of water that was absorbed by a plastic sheet seperating the keyboard from the logic board.
Monday, D-day, i tried turning the laptop ON and it booted normaly ... i was a bit skeptic, i was thinking maybe the RAM modules were fried or certain keys on the keyboard or the sound controller ... but nothing everything seemed normal.
I just finished running the Apple Hardware Extensive Test and everything seems running fine.
So to all persons who will be in the same case as mine - WATER SPILL - (not coffee, cola, or sugary acidic beverages spill). Turn off the machine as fast as you can, absorb water as much as you can, flip the computer on its screen side while placing paper towels to absorb humidity, time is on your side so the more you wait the better, in my case 3.5 days, and PRAY .
The waranty is probably voided since black sensors inside the machine turns to red as soon as they contact water, (like litnus paper with acids or bases)
Hope my experience will help you get through yours ...

9 times out of 10, you cannot, will not, shall NOT get thru same,.......corrosion sets in.
Many people suffer the pain of a "dried out and working notebook"..........  only to learn corrosion will soon ruin it.
Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

  • I spilled a little water in MacBook-typing in all caps and booting in safe mode. Any hope?

I spilled a little water into my MacBook. It worked fine after but a couple hours later,it began typing in all caps. It now only boots in safe mode and still types in all caps. Is there any hope for it if I leave it turned off to dry? How many days should I do this for before I give up?

No. Sounds like you powered it backup while it was still wet. If so the damage is done. Problems will only get worst as corrosion sets in.
Suggest you take it to Apple and ask them for the cost of repair it.
    Allan

  • I spilled coffee on my new macbook pro....What should I do?

macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

If you spilled coffee INTO the Mac (into the keyboard), then:
    1. Shut it down(do not put it to sleep)!
    2. Unplugg AC adapter.
    3. Leave it that way at least 24hours before turning it on again.
    4. If the computer seems dry after the first 24 hours, turn it on.
    5. Pray to GOD.
    6. If it works, you'll probably have to have the keyboard cleaned.
    7. Your warranty (including AppleCare) has expired anyway. If it doesn't work, you can't take it to Apple Store without paying for the repair (if possible). You might consider calling your household insurance provider, but that depends on terms of your insurance (if you have one).

  • I spilled some coffee on my MacBook Pro

A bought a MacBook a few weeks ago , I was working whit it on the table and I spilled coffee , and now my computer is not starting , I live in Congo so I can't bring it to apple to repair it , what can I do ?

Liquids and MBPs do not make for a good combination.  These types of incidents are not covered by the warranty.  Considering you location, the only option I can see is shipping you MBP to Apple.  Repair costs will be substantial.

  • Spilled Nail Polish on my macbook pro

My sister spilled nail polish all over my macbook pro. It is on and under the keys and on the screen. Everything works fine, but the nail polish just won't come off. I lifted off one key to try and clean it, and now that key won't come back on. Do you think apple will give me a new macbook since I am under warrantee? Will they clean it? I don't even know what to expect.

Probably the best outcome is qualifying for a "depot repair." That's when Apple send your computer to a central refurb facility rather than fixing it in your local store. If the case is not damaged, they will fix everything that they find wrong for a flat fee of about US$300. If the case cannot be cleaned, the price goes up by a couple of hundred to install your parts in a refurbed case. If the display must be replaced, add some more.
I'm guessing you are looking at a US$500-800 repair assuming you can get the depot repair. You'll have to ask Apple how they would handle it.
But Kappy is right--your Apple warranty does not cover this type of damage. You can check with your homeowners' insurance coverage. That might ease the pain but you still have to pay the deductible.

  • Uh oh - spilled a drink on my MacBook

Tonight I spilled some apple-flavored white tea drink on my MacBook. Not a whole lot - most of it was on my desk and on the floor. But some of it spilled on my keys.
Now for some reason, whenever I start up my Mac, it acts all screwy. It takes forever to start up, the mouse doesn't work on a lot of occasions (it's not just the touchpad - I've tried and hooked up a USB mouse and it still doesn't work).
Am I doomed to resort to a MacStore for repairs? Is there nothing I can do? I live in Eastern Washington and I think the nearest MacStore is six hours away in Seattle...

    Hi matt,
    Welcome to macbook forum.
You shouldn't turn it on right away, at least let it dry up to 48 hours or you really sure it is completely dried.
Even if it still working, sugar trace will act as electrolyte and might damaging your logic board in the future.
Try to consult apple store, but I think this incident is not covered by apple warranty.
    Good Luck.

  • I spilled some tea on my macbook air.

I spilled half a cup of tea on my macbook air, and it shut down right away. Do you think that it will be able to work again?

Your system shut itself down immeditely ... which says much.
Tea/milk/soda all are "more than simple water" and leave residues behind in the deep internals.
Talk to Genius Bar, but DO NOT turn it on again or plug it into wall power again until (actually IF) the Genus Bar clears it.
Others have reported repair bills of $900, since it is considered "accidental damage" and not covered by warranties.
    Good luck.

  • I spilled some water one my Macbook pro

Hey, so i spilled some water on my laptop, and now the shift key is on all the time, i tried to clean the key by taking it out but it didnt help. Is there any way to disable the shift key?

    Spill Cleaning
And, don't think that just because it was two teaspoons and not a glassful that there is a difference.
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.
