I spilled water on my MacBook Pro. What do I do?

Immediately after spilling, I wiped down my MacBook Pro. The keyboard has a rubber cover so I'm hoping the keyboard was protected; however, my trackpad began to react slowly to my touch.
After 5 minutes or so, the trackpad began responding better, but to be safe I turned it off as directed. What I did not know is that you're not supposed to turn it back on.
Since I was unaware of that fact, I stupidly turned it back on. It functioned funny and was gray for a while, but everything ended up coming together and everything seemed fine; however, I noticed my fan turn on.
Worried, I turned it off immediately.
After shutting it off for the second time, I learned that I should keep it upside down, opened, with a towel under the keyboard and trackpad. For the past 15 minutes it's been like that.
I only bought this laptop, ironically, on the day Steve Jobs died. My mom definitely will be ******. Is there any hope that my laptop will be okay? Or any other suggestions?
As of now, I cannot open the laptop up because of the 10 tightly bolted screws.

Yes, when you said "it worked well for a while".....99 times out of 100 thats the case (see above)!

In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....ANYTHING CAN BE FIXED , PERIOD........the question is costs.....if you spend say, $600 + to repair a $600 (value) laptop (as an example) , then it becomes almost futile.

Hi j,
Shut it down, unplug it, and if it has a removable battery, remove it. After that, it becomes controversial. If possible, I believe in removing bottom cover and keyboard, then dabbing up any water that may have reached the "innards." After that, you can leave it open and point a fan at it for two days or so. Another option is to carefully position it in a bag of uncooked rice (so no rice will get inside it) and seal the bag, so the rice can absorb the water. Some people will tell you not to mess with it at all, just bring it to an Apple Store.

I spilled water on my 2010 MacBook Pro the other night. I immediately turned it off, drained the water out of the keyboard and dried the laptop. I tried turning it back on and got the apple startup white screen, but would freeze and not go anywhere. I turned it off and tried again a couple hours later. This time, the screen will not turn on and doesn't seem like the laptop is powering up. The sleep mode light turns on, but nothing else. I tried again this morning, same thing happens but the laptop gets severely hot within 10 minutes. I figure that I have probably done damage by trying to turn it back on, but I am wondering what I do from here. I am a college student and need my laptop working. Does it seem like the laptop is done for and damage repair costs will probably be too expensive and would be better to replace it? Or will it be better to take it somewhere to fix it?

dont dare turn it on again, water / liquids migrate.
Turning it back on is BAD, damage A can lead to B leads to C etc.
Also water migrating around, especially while on, can wreck havoc worse than initial damage.
Nobody here can speculate on damage on something they cannot see.
Having repaired laptops in the past, even IF you got it completely dry, rresidue from water (iron particles etc), and wet spots under fine contacts is nearly impossible to "dry out", its just doesnt work that way.
Lots of people try to "dry it out", most to learn little was solved in doing same, and sometimes further damage occurred.
Make appt. with Apple store fore repair / diagnostic.

The laptop turns on just fine & the screen works, but the buttons won't respond. The only one that works is the shift button, which makes the login screen shake back & forth like I'm constantly putting in the wrong password. Is there anything I can do to fix it before having it looked at?

Immediately disconnect all peripherals, power cord & remove the battery. Turn the computer over with the lid partly open and the hinge facing upward to let the liquid drain. Do not flop it over and lay it flat - you want to separate it from the moisture. Place paper or cloth towels under the machine to sop up the mess.
After the computer disgorges whatever you spilled on it, don't turn it on for 72 hours or longer. You want to computer to dry out completely before turning it on again.
Some users here swear by hairdryers. Blow drying the innards may bake whatever was in the liquid onto delicate computer components. Better to let the computer air dry.
Use plain tepid water to clean out the computer. If you spilled iced beverage more than likely this ice fried the hot motherboard.
Sugary, acidic or milky drinks will almost always cause problems later on as the residue starts slowly corroding the computer innards.
Swab down any sticky parts with distilled water or denatured alcohol.
If none of the above works, you will need to take the computer to a repair shop. Apple Care does not cover liquid or food damage. Believe me, they can tell. So the old "my computer stopped working" line is not going to work.
NOTE: If you purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with. They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.

Spilled milk on my MacBook Pro, what now?

I put my milk down and it spilled on the closed lid on my computer (non retina 13 inch) I of course freaked out and rushed my computer upstairs leaving my family to fend for the safety of the couch. I cleaned it off immediately and opened the lid, some milk by the rubber seal but none on the keyboard, thank god (even though I'm atheist so that's saying something) and cleaned that too, that's when I remembered the milk spilled on the side with the vent. THE ONE VENT ON THE COMPUTER!!! of course before I was glad that apple doesn't festoon it's computers with vents like most pcs, but just my luck the one vent gets milked. I'm pretty sure not much milk got in the vent, because none cam gushing out but I cleaned it as best I could and opened it waking it from windows sleep (I was in boot camp) not problems there, so I shut down and booted into Mac, (this is before I read tons of articles saying not to turn on after a liquid spill) and the screen loaded but there were these wired purple and yellow tints and weirdnesses all over the screen so I held the power button until it shut down. I immediately left it with the lid open and it has been that way for the past 2.5 hours. Keep in mind I am not loaded so I don't have money to shell out for another Mac. It's 3 years old and I intend for another three years. This is my first mac coming from an ancient toshiba, and I desperately do not want to have to go back if it is broken, so any advice would be much appreciated, do you think it will be ok?

nobody here knows if it "will be ok", even though I used to fix laptops, even I dont know,.....nobody can tell anything thru the Internet on diagnosis.

Spilled water in my MacBook Pro its been slow ever since fixable or not?

My daughter spilt a full glass over my MBP, to cut a long story short, dried it, aired it all out and after a day or two started working again.
The issue that i now face is since then (1 year ago i would say) my Mac has been really slow performance wise, ages to open anything considering it has an i5 processor. Crashes frequently or freezes for long period, is this all due to the water spilt into it (yes i know obvious but need to make sure)? I have wiped the laptop and started from new and hasnt really made any difference.
If it is the due to the water damage is there something that i can do?

Okay, well I spilled water on my MacBook Pro...

The Macbook can still turn on and off and loads just like usual. The only problem is that my keys do not respond or if they do, it is like a continuous press of a key which wont stop. The back lit lighting is still functional, yet not as illuminated like before. When it gets to the user start screen I cant type in my password to allow me to get to the main screen. I also can not access my files or anything like that which ***** because I am a student and I need to get files off of this computer before the semster ends. I am in serious trouble...
Is the only option buying a new one? If not, how much does it cost to repair? If I decide to do this on my own... how difficult is it?

Very often when a MBP has been baptized the HDD is still functional. Take it out and put it in an enclosure. Attach it to another Mac and see if you can access the files.
At this point your best option is to bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation. You will be advised what the situation is and the probable repair costs. Then you will be in a position to make an informed decision.

Do you mean when the water was spilled on it, it shut down? That would indicate a major internal short occured.
Really, I'd say you need to take it into Apple or an Apple authorized repair center and get it looked at. Odds are you've got a significantly damaged device that will require professional repair and parts replacement to get working again.

Orient the computer vertically on its side so that water can drain out but leave the lid open as much as possible
Leave it that way for a few hours
Use a hairdryer to dry things out for another 30-60 minutes from all angles
Leave the device off all night with a fan blowing on it
Try to power up in the morning
At that point, the Mac will work OK, or you will know that you need to head to the repair shop
Or better yet, take the Mac to the repair shop first and let them power it up.

I suggest that you take the MBP into an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation. There are liquid sensors inside and they should check if any have been activated. This may give you a clue as to what you may expect regarding future reliability.

Okay...so today I was just setting up my printer and I accidentally spilled water onto my MacBook keyboard and the top hung where all the holes are. I immediately rubbed all the water off but I left it on. I didn't know what'll happen. I left my MacBook on sleep, but closed and inserted into y laptop case. After I finished cleaning my room, I decided to restart my MacBook (after 3 hours) BUT it didn't restart. I did look at others post but couldn't find someone's problem he same as mine. I tried bootin it over and over again. No response whatsoever...and what's worse, it's only 2 weeks old. Please help , I don't know what to do:(

Well, I don't know if you brought it in to the apple store yet, but if you did, I'm sure they told you they would fix it for a $755 flat fee. Since your liquid sensors were probably tripped, your warranty is basically void, at least for this instance.
You can diagnose the problem yourself though. Although from the sounds of it the worst probably happened, you can do a few things to check out if you have any hope.
You dont need to "bring it to the apple store" to figure out whats wrong with it as many others have told you is your only option. The service manual that an apple technician uses to diagnose and fix the macbook pros is readily available online.
If you don't want to spend money and your insurance won't cover this here is what you should do.
First check and see if the battery is acting normally, as in it charges and if you press the indicator button it shows you how full it is. If it is working, you are one step closer to being lucky, if its not, don't expect this next step to work unless you are even more lucky. Now take off the bottom case and try to dry any remaining water with a fan or low heat hairdryer. You might even want to wait another week for it to dry. If you are really ambitious you can buy some electrical contact cleaner and do the same and wait another few more days.
Then, on the bottom left on the logic board, near the keyboard connector are 2 larger silver pads. They usually have a power symbol next to them. Mine look like this
They are to the left of the tiny capacitor things and underneath the chip, basically dead center in the picture. Now you want to take a fork, or paperclip, and touch it to one or both of these "pads" (I only had to touch one of them). If you are really lucky, the machine will power on. If it doesn't, disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable which is right next to it and try it again. If it doesn't work, your logic board is most likely dead. If it does power on and your trackpad works, that means you need a new keyboard/power button. (those two are one in the same in a macbook pro) You can buy a replacement keyboard for $50 and while it is not easy to replace, it is not impossible and you could probably find someone to do it for less than $755.
Hopefully yours isn't too different. mine is a late 2010.

I have not seen the computer as my son is away,but he spilt "a small amount of water" on his MacBook Pro.
The next day some of the keys were not working.
The day after that it will not power up.
I guess water has got into the circuit board and it is now too late to do anything but take to an Apple Store and either replace the circuit board or junk the computer.

Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.
