I Stat Pro: 10 MB free memory but 256 MB swap file. What does this mean?
I have a 20 inch Intel Core Duo 2 Ghz iMac with the stock 512 MB memory stick.
The most intensive things I do are video and photo editing, and the system does seems to lag or sometimes dvd menus stutter.
Do I need more memory?
I Stat Pro widget will say that I have around 10 MB of free memory, but the swap file will say 256 MB or even 512 MB.
A swap file is memory that is on your hard drive. There usually is a minimum amount, and it will increase drastically when you run out of physical RAM which you appear to be doing. For example, I have 2 gigs and I have almost 1.5 unused typing here and a 64 mb swap file.
You also have to consider Rosetta if you are running Adobe PSCS2 and other Power PC version software. If so, Rosetta uses up a ton of memory to run the non-universal apps on the Intel Macs.
In my opinion, you need at least 1 gig, and will be way happier with 2 if running Adobe and MS Office stuff, just like others have posted.
DDR also requires matched pairs to run in dual state, so if you had 2 sticks of 512 or 2 of 1 gig, your speed will increase.
Bottom line, if it's fast enough for you and you don't mind the hard drive churning, don't let us spend your money

How can I get my ipod nano connected to itunes?
What you have on your computer is your iTunes library, not an "account."
Did you download and install the latest version of iTunes, which is available here?

If you have an earlier version, it may not support the most recent iPod nano, which could explain why Windows does not have the device driver to identify it. -
The battery icon on my (old) MacBook Pro turned red for a few moments, then black. What does this mean?
penny41,
Thanks, glad it helped you to check your battery status.
Something else to look at would be the cycle count, as you mention that your computer is "ancient". If you have a high number of cycles, it may also be a sign that the battery is tired and possibly nearing it's life span, and may possibly need to be replaced soon. If you see that again you may try a SMC reset to see if that helps, but if it continues you may need a new battery at some point. The battery icon will usually say needs service, or something to that effect. For the later MBP's Apple claims a life span of up to 1000 cycles, of this also will be dependent on who the battery is used, on the older ones I'm not quite sure what the claims were, and I don't know how old "ancient" in your case actually means.
I provide this for your info, so that you understand what may possibly be occurring.
I wish you the best.
SMC reset:
Follow directions for what applies to your machine, a battery you can remove, or a battery you should not remove yourself.

I'm using DVD Studio pro to burn a dvd but it won't let me cause I keep getting a "Formatting Failed" error message. It says "Formatting was not successful. Layer 0 exceeds max layer size allowed. Choose a suitable marker location that will support this condition." What does this mean?
KrisIt means your file is too large to fit on a single layer disk.

Hi everyone,
My iphone and Ipad got stollen yesterday...
I registered my Ipad onto "my profile" but when I tried to register my Iphone 4 onto "My Profile" it says that the product has been registered under ANOTHER apple ID. What does this mean?! Does this mean that the thief is using my phone under a new apple ID?!
I am getitng abit paranoid because when I tried to download a new app onto my macbook pro, it says that someone had accessed my account from a new computer. I am so scared.. as I know that if they are able to access my apple ID account they can see my billing/card details. I tried to delete my billing address and card details on my apple ID account to prevent this from occuring but I can't. Please help
Many thanks,
KimYou should change your AppleID password NOW. And if it says it was registered under another AppleID, the thief has probably done it.

My MacBook Pro says: iDisc not mounted, what does this mean???
I'm trying to acess my iDisc and it's not working. Message pops up that says "iDisc not mounted", what does this mean? I can no longer download music or movies from itunes also, because it says startup disc is full. I've tried to delete items from my computer, still not enough room. I don't know what to do here. Maybe I accidentally deleted the iDisc??? Also, the Mobile Me thing isn't working either...it says "an error was returned from the server. check back later." Guurrrrhhhh! Somebody please help me....

Most of the movies r for my son...synced to his iPad 2....can I delete them off my MBP??? Will they remain in the cloud? Or should I just copy my entire iTunes library to an external hard drive? Can I add more memory to this MBP?
You need a bigger Hard Drive, not More Memory (well, you may need that too but it has nothing to do with this problem)
Buy and fit a bigger hard drive, post back if you need help with that. -

When I insert the usb of my Elgato Video Capture into my Macbook Pro, it says 'USB Devices Disabled'? What does this mean and how can I solve it?
I've partitoned Windows swell and it says the same thing? I'm trying to live capture from my Sony Camcorder through Elgato but I just get the above message? This means that the backups were made with a later version than the version currently on the phone. You will have to update the phone to 6.1.3 to be able to restore the backup. You can restore a backup made with an earlier version, but not with a later version.

When I try to load free apps I keep getting error message 1004. What does this mean.
When I try to load free apps on my ipad I keep getting error message 1004. What does this mean?
I have never experienced this issue, but if you can't find anything that helps on the site that Philly suggested, I have read that this has worked for that error code.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data or Cache. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. -
A box keeps popping up on my MacBook telling me that my Mac OS X Startup disk has no more space available for application memory. It shows Firefox, Mac Mail, Finder and Pages. What does this mean? Thanks. Jessie

To use iCloud, you must first set it up with your Apple ID on a device with iOS 5 or a Mac with OS X Lion.

A family member set up my time capsule and sayy it's workign correcly but the light on it isn't green, it is yellow...what does this mean?
If the Time Capsule is operating normally, the light will be green.
If the amber light is blinking, something is not adjusted correctly, or there may be an update available for the Time Capsule.
Do you have the device that was used to set up and configure the Time Capsule there? Is this a Mac? If yes, we need to know what operating sysem it is using.
If you are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there. -
downloaded Appleworks 6.2.9 for Mac Updater-2.sim but when i try to open the file i receive the message "legacy image should be updated". what does this mean and/or entail?
Mavericks is not recognizing the .smi extension - on my Mac it thinks it's a RealPlayer document. You are not going to be able to do anything with this - it requires AppleWorks to be present to be updated, and you can't run AppleWorks on Mavericks (other than by the rather roundabout process of installing Snow Leopard Server in Parallels and installing AppleWorks on that, as described here).

Hi all,
My computer a few days ago wouldn't start up, would just stay at the gray loading screen forever. So as a result I tried to reformat the hard drive and reinstall, but I can't reinstall, until I erase the hard drive, but when I try to erase the hard drive it says the erase failed due to an input/output error. What does this mean? What can I do to fix my computer? The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
