I "stopped" items from going in the trash. Going on for two days now. Cannot turn off Mac while this is happening. How do I stop it?

I have a MacBookPro OSX Lion version 10.7.5  I was trashing a lot of pictures. While the trash was working I added some more and got a separate box with all the items listed individually saying "transferring to trash". It was taking a long time so I clicked on the little "x" to stop the transfer. I have messages that say "stopping" for two days now. I cannot turn the computer off as long as this is going on.
How do I stop this?
Thank you.

Hi Vickifromnewyork,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  If your computer will not shut down, you can force it to do so by holding the power button down until the screen goes dark.  Here are the shortcut keys for Lion:
