I sure hope the next Front Row update includes the Apple TV 2 functionality

I bought a Mac mini the day Leopard was released, and now it is my media server. It was that or an Apple TV, and I liked having more control plus a DVD player in the box.
Front Row 2.0 is nice, but I've been trying to find add-ons, like Sapphire, to give it more features. Nothing yet will play YouTube or other internet video, which is one of the things I'd really like. So, after today's cool demo of ATV 2.0 software, I'm hoping that Steve & Co will keep Front Row on parity with ATV.
After all, Mac users would like to rent HD movies & and show of our Macs too!

AppleTV includes HDMI and HDCP, which are not present in Apple computers. Although computers play HD movie trailers just fine, I suspect that studio demands for DRM would ensure that rental HD downloads (or HD-DVD or Blu-ray) would not appear on a computer. Unless the computer had HDMI and HDCP enforced.

I just installed the Front Row update. When I view photos through Front Row, the first album selection that comes up is "Shared Photos" - I set iphoto NOT to look for shared photos. I also set the slideshow NOT to play music. But every time I quit and then re-open iPhoto. those settings are not held - it says to look for shared photos and to play music...

try the following:
Quit iPhoto if it is running.
In your user directory there is folder named "Library". Inside the Library Folder there is a folder called "Preferences". Inside this preference folder there is a file named "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" .
Do the following, click on the name of this file and change it to "com.apple.iPoto.plist" or anything else different than iPhoto.
Now launch iPhoto and adjust your settings.
See if they "stick", if so, you can trash the file whose name you changed. If not try running permissions and repeating the process.
Check back if it does not work.

Front Row IS Included

FWIW Front Row is included in the install DVD, and probably ships on the MP as well. You can use this --> http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/errf1/homepage.spml or this -->http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/urm15t/homepage.spml to control Front Row.

The basic principle is to trick Front Row into believing your mouse provided a Remote Control personality.
However, I am still keeping my hopes up that Front Row coming pre-installed on the Mac Pros means we will see updated Cinema Displays with integrated iSight and Remote Control Receivers. This would allow us to use Front Row without any hacks, so it would make sense for Apple to pre-install it.

Does Front Row update playcount (and other attrbutes) in iTunes?

Excuse this question please which I could theoretically test myself, just don't have the resources at hand right now to try it out:
As I understand FR under Tiger uses iTunes to play music. So logically any smart playlists based on 'last played' or 'playcount' attributes will stay up to date?
However, since the new FR (Leopard) handles everything itself my question is, will it also update these iTunes attributes?
My previous quick test, seemed to suggest not. Pretty annoying cos I'm planning to use a MacMini as a mediacenter, connected to the TV and it seems to defeat the object of Front Row if I end up having to play music from iTunes in order to fully utilise my smart playlists.

The "Front Row" that is in your Applications folder may be "version 1.0" but it's really only a shortcut to the actual Front Row application that's inside your /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder. That's the application that is version 2 now and is actually displaying on your screen. I think Apple added this shortcut for people who don't have an Apple remote so it's easier to open Front Row.

Front Row Update

When wil front row be updated, it was ok when iTunes first started to sell movies and TV shows but now libraries are reaching hundreds of gigabytes and hundreds of movies navigating through them all is becoming quite difficult. Is there anything that can change this, i still want to just press menu on the remote as i use my mac mini as a media centre.
It would be nice if apple could update what i think is an integral part of the operating system, especially when they are trying to sell HD movies and TV shows.

My general strategy on this was to create a folder Categories and beneath
this make subfolders which each of the movie categories I cared about.
I put a short cut to this folder in my Movies folder. Then for each movie I had
I created a short-cut and placed it into the category I feel the movie belongs to.
If it belongs to more than one category I create more than one short cut.
In Front Row if I then go to Movies > Movies Folder I see my Categories folder and I can navigate to movies that way.

Front Row Update not updating?

I downloaded/installed latest update: 2.1.7. The problem is, when I check the version number in the Finder, FR shows up as 1.0! I've applied the update installer 3 times - still 1.0.
Info says- Created: Wednesday , Oct 10, 2007 Modified: Monday, Dec 15, 2008! So, did the update take or not???

I like Douglas McLaughlin's explanation here: Re: Front Row 1.0 or 2.1.6?? which basically says the version in the Applications folder is just a Launcher for the real one in the System folder. It was needed so folks without a Remote could launch Front Row.

Cannot install Front Row update 1.3.1

Software update unloaded the installer for this update. I have tried to run it several times and each time receive an error message indicating that installation failed & I should try again.
Two questions:
1. How do I determine what version of Front Row is installed on my computer?
2. How can I install this update??

I was having trouble installing this update too. I finally went to the Apple downloads site and re-downloaded the update. I then tried installing it again and it worked! Try that. I don't know how to tell what version you have.

Front Row feature needed in Apple TV

I see that Front Row in Leopard has a new feature that does not exist on the Apple TV (yet).
When you browse Photos, you now see the folders that exist in iPhoto rather than just a long list of Albums. This is a great feature and I hope they add it to the Apple TV in the next update.

No, like I said, Apple TV doesn't have a hard drive, so you can't download anything to it. You can only stream content in real time from other sources, either your Macbook, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or the internet. There is content available from Apple (and Netflix and MLB) that you can stream from the internet directly to your Apple TV, but it isn't always the same as the downloadable content. For example, you might be able to download a copy of the latest "Parks & Recreation" to your Macbook hard drive and then watch it by streaming it from your Macbook to your Apple TV. But that same episode might not show up in the Apple TV menu as a program available for direct streaming.
I think it's fair to say that Apple TV is an interface and works very similarly to Front Row, it's just makes things more convenient because you don't need to hook your computer up to the TV or worry about balancing your laptop on the edge your entertainment center, etc. It's the size of a hocky puck and fits seamlessly into the rest of your entertainment center.
Are they getting rid of FrontRow because they want to increase Apple TV sales? I don't know, but sometimes I get the feeling that Apple does things more out of a "let them eat cake" arrogance than outright greed. They probably decided in a meeting somewhere that Front Row wasn't "necessary" anymore because Apple TV provides a much more "elegant" solution. The fact that not everyone wants to shell out $99 for an Apple TV is probably not much of a concern to them.

My iphone is locked and we're not sure of the Apple ID / iCloud password

last 2days before i have reset everthing from my iphone...
Unfornately i have lost/forgotten my apple ID and passwords for my iphone. When the iphone powers on, it goes straight to an iCloud username & password request and I cannot get past it.
I have installed iTunes on my laptop but it fails to connect to the server.
i have all my phone bill with me were i purchased.........

If you mean that the email you were using for your Apple ID "expired" and you changed it to a different email on the same Apple account (via the Edit button on Manage your Apple ID), then you need to do the following:
1.     Go into Manage your Apple ID, sign in with your current ID and Edit the Apple ID back to the old email. This is temporary. Do NOT verify the email, do NOT change the password: Apple - My Apple ID
2.     Go to the screen on your device asking for the iCloud password, and type in your current Apple ID password.
3.     Once the device is up and running, go to Settings>iCloud and make sure that the old account is not still signed on. If it is, Sign it off.
4.     Go back to Manage your Apple ID, sign on with the old Apple ID and current password, and change your Apple ID back to the current one. You may have to verify it again.
5.     Sign onto iCloud on the device with your current Apple ID and password.

HT1947 my remote application works fine however I dont have a menus section that allows me to control the apple tv screen functions

I installed remot on my phone, all features work fine except I can't control the apple tv functions such as search movies, internet and other features. I had an earlier version on my 3 Iphone and it worked fine. I have tried everything from reloading the application and nothing seems to add this feature

OK, Problem solved. Software on Apple TV was VERY outdated. It had been sitting in the box for over a year and needed an update. Problem solved!
