I taped video in 1920 by 1080 but when i edited in final cut pro it reset to 640 by 480 why?

what gives?  i my last video edited came out just fine in HD 1080p so why is it not doing it again?  please help!  a million thanks in advance.

A couple of things could be going on here:
When you created the project, what "settings" did you choose?
If you shot in 1920 x 1080p,  and then if you toggled the  "set based on first video clip," it SHOULD have defaulted to 1080--if... "IF" the first clip was, indeed, such material.  However, if you FIRST added in a different sized clip (640x480) to the timeline OR checked the "custom" box, then you changed the aspect ratio unintentinally.
When you open the project library, what does the INSPECTOR say about the settings?
If it does not say 1920x1080, then it--obviously--is not in the ratio.
All is not lost.
Do this: Open up a NEW project. This time CUSTOMIZE the settings in the dialogue box to 1920x1080. Then, cut / paste the material in the timeline from your OLD project into this NEW project (with the 1920x1080 setting.)
See if that does the trick!

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?

• Converting Nokia N95 video for editing in Final Cut Pro?

I have some .mpeg4 videos shot with a Nokia N95 mobile phone that I want to edit in Final Cut Pro.
I read everywhere that .mpeg4 is not an "editing format".
I want to use Quicktime Pro (or Mpeg Streamclip) to convert the footage to something I can use in FCP *without degrading the original quality* but I am completely lost as to what settings I should use.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have done some test conversions but a side by side comparison in Quicktime of the original and converted footage showed the latter to be softer, less contrasty and with different colours. Not at all what I wanted.
I've posted this question on th eFCP and iMovie forums but haven't had any definitive replies. Is this really so complicated?
Thanks in advance!

I've been using iMovie 09 with these files but because the image quality is pretty poor I need the image correction functions of FCP. I can import the .mpeg4 files to FCP OK and work with them but I seem to spend all my time rendering. This is why I began to wonder if my initial file format and sequence settings were what they should be (and I am completely lost here).
The edited film will be uploaded to blip.tv and then embedded in websites. My concern is not to degrade the quality during my workflow.

• 2012 mac mini i7 or imac i5 for video editing with final cut pro 7 ?

Hello,
I am totally new to mac world.
I read some posts but not clear to me if better a mac mini 2012 i7 2,3Ghz and video card  Intel HD Graphics 4000 or an imac 2012 i5  2,7GHz and NVIDIA GeForce
GT 640M   with 512MB of GDDR5 memory.
The software is final cut studio 3 from final cut pro 7.
So better more performance in the l cpu or  in the videocard?
Thank you
Gianni

If the Mac Mini has not had its hardware changed since the release of Mountain Lion, July 25, 2012, Final Cut Pro 7 is reported as not working in some situations under Mountain Lion.  If it has been hardware changed by Apple on or after July 25, 2012, you won't be able to run Lion, and may not be able to run all Final Cut Pro 7's features.  The two entries for Final Cut Pro 7:
http://roaringapps.com/app:4449
and
http://roaringapps.com/app:4909
Appear to conclude it launches, but there must be something that doesn't work.  There are some issues both with Lion and Mountain Lion with Final Cut Studio 3:
http://roaringapps.com/app:1384
My advice, check the Final Cut forums to see what people have experienced with both.  And make sure to follow specs exactly.

• I'm running OS X, but I can't run Final Cut Pro 1.0 and appropriate upgrade

I recently purchased a Macbook with OS 10.4.6 on it. I have Final Cut Pro 3, but I can only install it via FCP1 and upgrade to FCP2 and finally to FCP3. However, when I try to install 1.0, it says that this system cannot support it. I can't seem to figure out how to run Classic mode either.
So, my question is, what are my options to run this software? (I really do not want to purchase the newest software.) Also, I know someone who has FCP3 full version (not an upgrade); would it be possible to install this software and use one of the serial numbers from one of my other software disks? Any help would be great.
Thanks!

FCE is more limited but depending on your needs it might be fine
check out http://www.apple.com/finalcut
why do you feel you need to download an upgrade
after FCP 4 (3-4 years ago) you no longer needed an older version installed just the serial number as they discovered the problem that you are running into now

• IPhone 4 Video Editing In Final Cut Pro

So i just got an OWLE Bubo for my iPhone 4 and have been taking a lot of video lately that I wanted to start editing.
I've figured out that I needed to transcode the H.264 video the iPhone 4 produces to something edit-friendly like ProRes 442. I've done this in Compressor and its all gone fine and well, but it still makes me render everything that I put in the timeline...So something is off. It is a RED line so I believe this is audio related?
Note: I know the iPhone records audio at 44.1KHz and it needs to be at 48KHz to work in final cut...and my settings for the ProRes442 is converting it to 48KHz but it still doesn't seem to be working...
There is surprisingly little useful information on this topic online.

Yeah i know...Ive been pulling my hair out to try to find the difference between the sequence and the transcoded clips all week but there just wasnt any difference.
Somehow after a week of google searches and forum scouring i didnt happen to see this post...which absolutely solved my problem!!!

• Every video put into Final Cut Pro exports in horrible quality regardless of format/settings.

Hello fellow Mac enthusiasts,
I'm having a problem which may or may not have been plaguing my studio since day one. Every video that we edit in Final Cut Pro exports in MUCH lower quality than it was when it was imported, not only that, the file size of the newly exported video is several times the size of the original. What I end up getting is a file too large for our clients to email around. We recently had a client come into our studio with a flash drive full of 15 second avi's no larger than 900 KB, he wanted a few of them edited together with simple cross fade transitions, and even a few seconds of dead space cut out. He needed them to be the highest quality possible for a powerpoint presentation he may now be unable to give. At first I exported them as Uncompressed avi's, best quality, thousands of colors, and no sound. The resulting file was not only blurrier, but now 260.5 MB!! And that one was with zero edits! The original was 803 KB and crystal clear. So after that I decided to try a few tests. We also produce a bi-weekly hour-long local television show, which looks fine on television but now I'm wondering how much better it could and should look. I've been exporting that out as a Quicktime, Apple ProRes 442 HQ, Interlaced bottom-field-first, zero filters, both compressor native and NTSC 720 X 480. I attempted this method on the client's original 803 KB with zero edits and not only did it export a completely unusable video compared to the original, but it was now 57.1 MB. What is going on here? Is Final Cut conspiring against me? I'm guessing it's something in my settings which I'll shamefully admit I know absolutely nothing about. Could anyone help a struggling video editor do his job?
Joey

Hey guys sorry it took me song long to respond it's been a busy week filled with many things not relating to final cut...
In response to David's post, the original file is indeed larger than 720X480, though it's dimensions are not available to see in the 'more info' associated with the file itself. By comparison, the apple pro res LT file I exported through final cut of the same avi file is 720X480, and looks significantly worse.

This was after I created a new project, made the sequence settings into Apple ProRes lt 30p under the audio/video settings in Final Cut, and exported it as the same with 'current' dimensions (it was listed as 850X637, maybe that was the original?) Although I did have to render the original avi itself once it was placed in the timeline. I guess there's no way to know exactly what sort of avi my original file is so I can match my sequence to it? The 'more info' (to be fair im sort of used to 'properties') leaves something to be desired..
I guess my question is: what else can I change in my settings to leave the quality of the video intact, if anything?
Thanks everyone.

• Why don't these videos display in Final Cut Pro X?

I am very new to using my iMac and to final cut pro. I can't figure out why these videos don't display video in the application. They play fine with audio in FCP and they are perfectly watchable through quicktime on the Mac. I have a screenshot, just ask if there is any other information you need to help me resolve the problem, thanks!!

Tom is correct it is a Sanyo camera whih shoots in MPEG4, I was actually unaware that fcp doesnt support this!
When i put the files into a project they just display exactly the same, the audio works but no visual to them!
I will try what yous have suggested when i get home from work this evening and hopefully the converted files will play nicely!
Thank you both!

• Why can't I use HD video from my Samsung Galaxy S2 in Final Cut Pro 6?

My Samsung Galaxy S2 shoots gorgeous 1080P HD Video.  It has no trouble importing into iPhoto, but when I want to edit in Final Cut Pro 6, it won't accept the file.  Anyone know how I can fix this?  Thanks.

FCP doesn't edit the format the camera shoots. You need to convert the video files to ProRes...then import into FCP.
If you want an app that edits formats natively, look at Adobe Premiere CS5.5.

• Can you import video from dvcam using a dsr 2000 into final cut pro 10?

Can you bring video from a DVCam tape using a DSR 2000 into Final Cut Pro?

Should work OK with the iLink (a.k.a. Firewire a.k.a. IEE1394a) interface, but you may have to capture using iMovie, then ( in FCX) running File > Import > iMovie Events.)

• FCE4 to Final Cut Pro with HD Video

I currently use Final Cut Express 4 and was thinking about upgrading to Final Cut Pro (Studio 3). In the past I wasn't using HD video but I will be soon, will FCE4 fully support HD video and are there any advantages to working with FCP instead of FCE for HD? Any input would be helpful.

Hi(Bonjour)!
What is your camcorder model?
FCE 4 support MiniDV NTSC, miniDV PAL for standard def, HDV AND AVCHD for HD.
HDV and AVCHD are transcoded to Apple intermediate codec when imported in FCE.
Final Cut Pro handle HDV natively but not AVCHD that is transcoded to Apple ProRes codec.
If you do not need to work with native HDV, there is no reason to buy FC3 regarding the editing aspect (Final Cut Pro) as FCE support around 90% of FCP features for basic editing.
But FC3 come with other applications that give better tools to handle tasks like audio sweetening (Soundtrack Pro), DVD authoring (DVD studio Pro), compositing and graphic motion (Motion), HD sharing (Compressor) over the net, on BR DVD, etc.
Go with FCE 4 and keep your money to buy external hard drive(s) for a dedicated media storage solution, a must for HD editing and a better HD camcorder.

• Does Final Cut Pro X support TS.BUP, RM.BUP, and TS.VOB Video Files

I would like to know if I can import the named files in my question into Final Cut Pro X.
Thinking about buying it, but want to know before I do.

Thanks again Tom Wolsky. I did however download the trial version of Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate for Mac, and it worked very very well. I just discovered that it also supports three professional encoders, Apple Intermediate Codec, ProRes and DNxHD—ensuring maximum editing quality and efficiency when working with iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere or Avid Media Composer, respectively. For what it's worth, it also can convert a broad range of video formats to these three professional encoding formats easily and quickly. This means an advantage over Apple Compressor 4, which only supports conversion to videos in QuickTime format.
I only tried it because I viewed a video by Chris Pirillo (former TechTV host) and CNN tech correspondent who highgly recommend it for my issue. It's a lockergnome review. I pasted the page link at the bottom if your interested in hearing what they have to say. It's on YouTube, just type in WonderShare. Again thankyou for your time and expertise.

• Why is there several seconds of black running time at the end of the videos I am producing in Final Cut Pro X? There is no gap or effect ant the end of the project.

At the end of some of my projects the cursor runs over the end of the project for app. 3 seconds. When rendering the project Final Cut Pro X adds app. 3 seconds of black to the video. There is no effect or gap or something else at the end of the project.

OK, wish you luck over there, seems like somebody over there should be able to help.
If you don't get help, post back here & I'll try to find somebody in the top users that can help.
