I think I broke my CD drive...

Broken Cd drive + finals week approaching=not good
Here's the deal:
I was ejecting a Cd, and I think something was blocking it, so it could not get out. There was a loud clicking noise.
Now, the cd drive does not take cds. I am able to insert them, but usually it "takes" the cd without me having to push it all the way in. Now it doesn't "take" cd's, and everytime I turn on my computer, there is an awful clicking noise in the disk drive. If I manually push a disk all the way in, the drive will not eject it unless I restart and hold down the eject key.
I seriously doubt it's something I can fix myself, and it's probably really expensive to replace a drive.
Does anyone know how much it costs? Would it be cheaper to buy an external burner?
I know someone will ask, so I will say it now - No, I do not have applecare or any sort of warranty to my knowledge. I bought this computer used on Ebay, but it's been wonderful until now.
I can't believe I broke my drive
Any thoughts?

Hi,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #88275 on Troubleshooting the slot load disc drive (Portables). I don't know how much it will cost because we don't know what happened. The only people who can really tell you how much it is going to cost you is an Apple Certified Technician from your local Apple Store/Reseller.
Buying a external burner will probably be cheaper then having it replaced.

  • USB Drive thinks it's a network drive in Virtual PC

    For some reason my brain damaged USB HD, which is formatted under Windows and which I use as a 'mule' to move files to and from my office PC and my home Powerbook, thinks it's a "Network drive" when I boot up Virtual PC. Hence, it can't be reformatted or erased or even seen by Windows' Computer Management utility...it has suddenly become virtually useless.
    It is supposed to display in Windows as a USB HD, NOT a "Network drive". Something is brain-damaged; either the Windows NT system, or Virtual PC, or the Mac....and, of course, I am now brain damaged, too, from attempting to do anything with Windows on a Mac!

    Since VPC is not an Apple product, you'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups> rather than an Apple forum.

  • I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a

    I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a all-in-one
    Product: D110a all-in-one
    OS: Windows XP Professional
    Error messages: None
    Changes before problem appeared: None--new installation
    The quality of photo images (mostly JPG files) in printouts is awful even though the files display beautifully on the PC screen. I am using
    IrfanView software for displaying/printing. As far as I can tell, IrfanView is not the problem.
    When I print the same images on a Deskjet 5150 attached to a different PC also running XP Pro and IrfanView, the quality of the printouts is at
    least acceptable, Some would probably say good or very good.
    It's dificult to explain in words the problem with the printouts. A picture of really pretty vegetables (squashes, tomatoes, watermelon, etc) comes
    out much too red. Moreover, the red, which appears shaded on the screen, seems to be all one shade in the D110a printouts.
    Something similar happens to a view of a huge tree in full leaf. On screen, there are subtle variations in the "greenness" of the leaves. In the
    printout, all green is the same shade. In the same printout, the trunk of the tree is all a single shade of grey. It isn;t even obvious that the
    trunk is a round, solid object.
    I liken the effect to audio that disappears entirely when you lower the volume and gets clipped into square waves in even moderately loud passages.
    I don't know whether the D110a driver software permits adjusting the parameters that appear to be set incorrectly, and if adjustments are possible,
    how I would identify which parameters to adjust, how I would access them, or how I would adjust them. I'm hoping that someone can help. Thanks.
    I forgot to mention that I have used the diagnostic application and it tells me that there are no problems.

    Hi everyone,
    I noticed the following message when network starts on my gateway
    Warning: This functionality is deprecated.
    Please refer to /etc/rc.conf on how to define a single wired
    connection, or use a utility such as netcfg.
    Then I realized the way network settings should be written in rc.conf has changed. But I can't figure out how this should be done.
    Currently, my set up is the following (old way):
    INTERFACES=(eth0 eth1)
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="eth1 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    eth0 is on DHCP because the IP is dynamically assigned my ISP.
    eth1 has a fix IP because it's on the LAN side.
    No problem to use DHCP on eth0 with the new settings.
    But for eth1, I don't know what I am supposed to write for gateway.
    Wiki isn't clear on that one either, and it looks like many articles still refer to the old way.
    Any guidance appreciated, thanks.
    brazzmonkey,
    you can't define 2 interfaces the old way (even though I saw some tricky workaround somewhere in the forums).
    Use, f.e., netcfg:
    Comment your old lines.
    In /etc/rc.conf insert:
    NETWORKS=(Eth0-dhcp Eth1-static)
    DAEMONS=(..... !network @net-profiles ....)
    In /etc/network.d create 2 files:
    First one is named  Eth0-dhcp.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION="ethernet"
    DESCRIPTION="Whatever text"
    INTERFACE=eth0
    HOSTNAME="your hostname"
    IP="dhcp"
    DHCP_TIMEOUT=15
    Second one is named Eth1-static.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION='ethernet'
    DESCRIPTION='whatver'
    INTERFACE='eth1'
    HOSTNAME='hname'
    IP='static'
    ADDR='192.168.0.10'
    GATEWAY='192.168.0.1' # your gateway IP
    DNS=('192.168.0.1') # your DNS server
    The names Eth0-dhcp and Eth1-static are not magic. They just must be the same in rc.conf and in /etc/network.d.
    Hope it helps.

    PS: netcfg must be installed.

  • Iphoto--I think I broke it

    I just purchased the macbook with iphoto 6 and have never used iphoto before. I copied some of my pictures folders from my windows machine to the pictures folder. I then imported them into iphoto. I didn't know it would put everything into the library sorted by years and the last roll folder. I wanted the folders sorted the way I had them in the pictures folder. So, I proceeded to delete all 800 pictures by holding the delete key. Iphoto crashed three times while doing this. I then imported one folder and attempted to drag and drop the pictures into some albums I created in the source pane. Drag and drop wouldn't move the pictures. I restarted my computer and drag and drop started working but now select all does not select anything. I am selecting the last roll, clicking edit so the thumbnails appear then attempting to select all the thumbnails but select all only selects one picture. I tried shift-clicking to select a group of them. When I drag and drop it says I'm moving however many I have selected but when I click on the album I'm moving the pictures to, only one or two pictures have been moved. I tried rebuilding the photo library but that didn't solve the problem.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    I don't think you broke iPhoto, but have you
    considered using the Help at all?
    1. To duplicate your folder structure in iPhoto,
    simply drag the folders to the Source (or left-hand)
    pane in iPhoto. There they will be automatically
    saved into Albums. If you start at the bottom of your
    folder structure, you can create the enclosing
    folders in iPhoto.
    2. When you tried to remove the 800 photos by using
    the delete key - well it might have been better to
    seclect them and move them to the iPhoto trash. Then
    got to the iPhoto menu and empty the trash.
    Now your photos are removed from iPhoto and the
    iPhoto library folder.
    3. When you're trying to operate drag and drop and
    select, first make sure your in the library, not in
    an album or smart album. Is it possible that you were
    trying to drag the photos into a place they already
    were?
    I have used help extensively but can't find the answer to my questions.
    No, not possible. I'm in the library attempting to select multiple photos and drag and drop into an album. I can drop them one at a time but I can't select all nor is it moving the number of photos indicated. For example, I selected 8 photos, dragged them to an album. A +8 appeared as I dragged the pictures but when I looked at the album there were only three pictures there.

  • Mavericks Broke My Optical Drive

    Good day all!
    I upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.4 and it has slowed down my system in general and I can no longer burn CD/DVD. The optical drive will read/play commercial DVD movies, Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 Retail Mid 2009 Intern install disk, Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Retail (PCrly 2010) only. The optical drive WILL NOT read Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 Retail Mid 2008 Intern or MAC OS X 10.6.1 Update Mid 09 Intern or commercial music CDs. All OS X disks were sent to me from Apple Care after giving them my serial number after informing them that Mavericks IMO broke my optical drive. I also tried all the troubleshooting tutorials including cleaning the optical drive with a lens cleaner disk.
    So my question is can I boot my machine using (Control-R) go into Disk Utility erase the hard drive completely including the Mavericks Recovery Partition and load any of the above Leopard or Snow Leopard OS X disk? I have already backup and copied all my Apps including iLife. I don't like Mavericks except for the new Safari otherwise my system was much faster before the upgrade. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  • I Think I Erased The Entire Drive...Help!

    I just got a new Macbook Pro.  I did Migration Assistant and transferred everything over to the new unit.  After thinking about it for awhile, I wanted to do a clean install from scratch.  Did some looking at the internet.  Ended up going to the Disk Utility and somehow I erased both the drive and the OS.  Initially, I got a flashing folder with a question mark in it.  Then it turned into a spinning globe and looked like it was downloading something.  After awhile, I get the Disk Utility with four options on it.  Can anyone tell me how to make my MacBook look like new again?  Just like it asks you the language when you first turn it on.  In layman's terms what of the four options do I use?  Thanks!!

    When you format the drive, you erase OS X too.
    In that window with four options, one of them should say "Reinstall OS X", so click it and follow the steps to install OS X. If you are in Disk Utliity, close it first.

  • I made my Ipod think it's a network drive - help!

    I've played my personal iPod through iTunes on my work PC without any problems until recently.
    Long story short, my Ipod now thinks it's the I network drive. I've confirmed that my songs and videos are still loaded on the iPod. I can't access the songs or videos on the iPod or through iTunes
    When I connect it to my home computer and work computer the ipod loads, and is named as "I:\" in Itunes on both machines. In windows explorer on both machines it is (correctly) shown as an E drive and is named "David's Ipod".
    So is there a way I can get the iPod to remember what it is - without wiping everything and starting over?
    I have found some useful links to articles in this forum, have played about with network settings in Windows Explorer and reset the iPod twice.
    All help and suggestions gratefully received.
    Thanks.
    Dell   Windows XP

    Sorry, I should have been clearer. The songs are still on the iPod. I can't get the iPod to play them either independently or connected to the computer through iTunes.
    I can change the path when the iPod is connected
    to the computer but iTunes still won't access the
    songs.
    iTunes won't access what songs?
    I though you were having a problem with the iPod?
    When I disconnect the iPod from the computer I
    can't access the songs.
    You can't access any songs with iTunes?
    Or the songs on teh iPod are gone?
    When iTunes loads the iPod, it correctly shows the the amount of space used / free space figure I know I have on my iPod. It doesn't list the song names etc. Instead of displaying "David's Ipod" (which is shown in Windows Explorer as an E Drive) iTunes it shows "I". I can't access any songs with iTunes.
    When I examine my iPod through Windows Explorer I see all the data files listed.
    When I disconnect the iPod there are no songs listed. It's as if it's got no data on it, but I know the data is still there from the file sizes listed on both Windows Explorer and iTunes.

  • Can't upgrade catalog from Elements 8 -thinks photos are on backup drive...

    I've just bought LR3 (and upgraded to latest 3.2 release), and now I want to import all my photos from my Elements 5 collection (just over 10,000 photos - mostly RAW). All the photos are actually stored on a network share from my Windows Home Server machine, all accessible as \\home-server\photos\. Elements 5 has no problems with accessing them this way, and I can also access them fine from Lightroom, but I obviously want to retain all my keywording.
    As there doesn't appear to be any way to upgrade a PSE5 catalog to LR3, I followed a recommendation I found on this forum (I think), and have downloaded a trial of PSE8. I have successfully upgraded a copy of the PSE5 catalog to PSE8 format, and then view them all in PSE8, so step one is a success. When I launched LR3, it then gave me a new option to upgrade an Elements catalog - this was a step forward. So, I took the option to upgrade the PSE8 catalog to LR, but after attempting it I see a window that says:
    "Lightroom has successfully upgraded one Photoshop Elements catalog photo, but was unable to upgrade 10729 additional photos because the photos were moved to inaccessible Photoshop Elements backup drives. If you wish to manage the Photoshop Elements backup photos in Lightroom, please use Lightroom to import images from the following Photoshop Elements backup discs."
    The photos are most definitely not on "backup drives". I've never backed up photos from Elements (my backups are done separately from my Home Server). Lightroom can see the relevant shares, as I've imported a few photos directly onto that share from a card reader, and have also imported some photos on there in a "leave in place", but (as they are RAWs) I don't get any keywording this way.
    I'd be most grateful for any suggestions, especially as I won't be able to do anything in PSE8 when my trial runs out....

    To Lee Jay:
    Thanks for that - that certainly agrees with my findings so far.
    Do I take it you've had this confirmed by someone from Adobe then? Is it an intended limitation, or just an acknowledged bug?
    I really hope it isn't an intended limitation, as it would mean that this high cost professional-targeted app (LR3) is not capable of something that the consumer level one (PSE8) does with ease. Surely it isn't that unusual to store your photos on a network drive.....
    If this isn't likely to be fixed soon I guess I'll have to :
    Backup (network drive based) photos and catalog
    Use PSE8 to move the whole directory tree to internal hard drive
    Upgrade PSE8 catalog in LR3
    Use LR3 to move the whole directory tree back to the network drive
    Not ideal, but it should get the job done...
    Yes, confirmed by Adobe.  It's a design limitation *of the PSE upgrader*.  You can use LR3 to store images on a network drive, you just can't store the catalog there.  I don't expect this to be fixed soon, so I'd go with the workaround if I were you.
    I'm not storing my catalog on the network drive though, just my photos. Even with the catalog on an internal drive, LR3 still fails to upgrade any photos that are on a network drive.
    I have though now spoken to a helpdesk chap at Adobe, and he has confirmed that Lightroom is not able to upgrade photos on a network drive. Seems like a really poor show to me, but I don't suppose I can do much about it...

  • HELP! I think I deleted my hard drive

    I was trying to install Boot Camp and I think I erased the partition on which my Mac stuff was on. Now it won't boot anymore on Leopard. It only boots on Windows. I am not sure were I made the mistake, but I am afraid I erased my whole disk, thinking I was installing Windows on another partition... Anyway, bottom line, before I re-install Leopard from scratch, can someone tell me if there is any chance to get back to my original Leopard and data? I am afraid not, but maybe I am wrong...

    I'm sorry this happened to you. Heck of a way to end the year but there is a New Year coming.
    I don't claim to be an expert on this, and someone correct me if I am wrong but here is what I would do.
    1. Back up your windows data to a separate firewall drive, not the hard drive on the computer, if you have any important windows info you want to save.
    2. Insert the leopard disk and boot the machine.
    3. Use erase and install option.
    4. After it installs, go to "Utilities" (in the finder under "Applications") and click on Disk Utility.
    5. the hard drive should be listed (by manufactures name i.e. Fujitsu....) and underneath that as a sub drive there should be Listed a drive as Macintosh HD.
    6. CLICK ON THE MANUFACTURES NAME (i.e Fijitsu....) to highlite it.
    7. DO NOT CLICK ON THE MACINTOSH DRIVE, THIS IS NOT THE ROOT DRIVE. YOU HAVE TO PARTITION THE ROOT DRIVE.
    7. right click with the mouse and it will give you the option to set up a partition.
    8. Pick your Partition size and let the computer do its thing.
    I hope this will work for you.
    Happy New Year.

  • I think I broke my mini

    I decided to install Linux (PC Linux OS) along side Mac OS X because... I wanted to. I booted my mac mini into a PCLOS live CD and installed it on an external firewire drive. When it was done installing it said something about doing something to a bootloader, which is where i think the problem lies. When I shut down my computer the PCLOS disc ejected, and when I turned it on i got a flashing "?" mark on a folder, meaning my mac wont boot from its internal HDD. I put in my OSX install disc and formatted the internal HDD and then reinstalled OSX, but it still wont boot into OSX. Also now the OSX disc wont come out.
    Now I really don't care about installing PCLOS on this machine. Can any one help me get my OSX back? Please?

    I would try smc and pram first, if won't help then start from Leopard install disc and go Disc Utility. There you can format the HD in zeros and then install os again. It may be helpful:

    This is also posted in the expansion topics.
    I'm thinking about an external Ethernet hard drive for my iMac.
    Have any of you tried one and if so what do you think about them?
    Where will I get higher transfer rate Ethernet or USB 2?
    Last question, will I be able to boot up from an Ethernet hard drive for running DiskWarrior on internal hard drive or for emergencies(cross fingers)?
    Thanks for your replies in advance.

    I'm going with a FW400 external hard drive as a primary backup for my iMac (speed), but I'm thinking about trying out the D-Link DSM-G600 Wireless Network Storage Enclosure as a third backup on a different power supply. Basically the DSM-G600 is a hard disk enclosure with gigabit ethernet (like the new iMac and PowerBooks), wifi and a USB port to expand the storage capability. I figure its a good cheap start to check out network-attached storage at home, and if its good I may either stick to it and add additional ones as my needs grow, or move up to that one NAS 4-drive unit that everyone raves about (lost on the make and model at the moment). There are lots of NAS enclosures out there, but the DSM-G600 is the only one I've seen under $200 with gigabit ethernet.

    I just re-installed Mountain Lion (for the second time since the original installation in summer 2012).
    but stuff related to the finder is frustratingly slow ... everytime I do anything in the finder it takes forever, opening a folder, doing a spotlight search (or even a Houdah search).
