Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums -- and to the Mac
To see if the address book is still on your computer look in the applications folder for Address book - if you find it just drag it onto the DOCK and it will make an aliases there for you
To reload a deleted application from your OS X disks, see these MacWorld instructions
To delete an entry in the address book select that entry and go to the edit menu ==> delete card (if it says just delete rather than "delete card" then you have an item on the card selected instead of the card - click on another card in the list to the left then click back onto the one you want to delete)

  • No link to the Address Book application from Address Book Widget?

Before I could click the little red button, but with the new (10.4.4) widget, is there a way to launch the Address Book application?
    1.5 GHz PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I don't think there is a way to launch the Address Book app with the new 10.4.4 widget like we could before. I noticed that right away and went to the Mac OS X Feedback page to report it. If it bugs you as much as it bugs me you should report it too.
Here's the link just to make it easy:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
I like the new design ("front end") of the 10.4.4 Address Book widget, but I immediately missed the handy red button. I hope we see that feature reintroduced in the next update.

  • I accidentally deleted the address book icon from my home screen

And I want it back. I'm not sure how to go about this.
    Thanks.

You can't delete it.  You probably moved it into a folder or to another screen.  If you recently updated your software, the Contacts app is now located in a Utilities folder on your first home screen.
If you still can't find it, you can reset your home screen layout (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout).  This will reset all the original apps to their original positios and your purchased apps will follow in alphabetical order.

  • How do I re-install my address book application?

While trying to import my contacts from my Hotmail account, I melted my Address Book application and had to send it to the trash. How do I re-install it? Can I re-install it? Do I have to re-install the whole operating system? Please help, I'm trying to learn how to use my mac!!

G'day.. and welcome to the forums.
I cannot imagine any circumstance where importing data would require that you delete the Address Book application!
Have you emptied your trash? If not, move it back to your Applications folder.
If not, the simplest path (least technical) path could be an Archive and Install, preserving users.
Otherwise (if you are confident), install [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com> and grab your Leopard install DVD. You should then be able to locate the Address Book in one of the installation packages - and you will be able to install it directly.
You will then need to download the combo update to your operating system level (e.g 10.5.4), and install any Address Book updates that apply to that as well.
    I hope this helps.

  • Address Book Application Freezes

While using the address book application it froze up, I did a forced boot. When I reopened the Address Book application again it freezes up while opening.
How can I delete the Address book application and reload it?
I luckily have all my contacts backed up on my iphone.

I have the same problem since the update to qo.5.5 and it seems to be related to Smart Groups. I used to use the Address Book in Skype and Eudora. After the upgrade to 10.5.5 Eudora went into an infinte loop. After using a "virgin" version of it and use it in my usual waxy WITHOUT checking the box for MAc OS X Adress Book, Eudora worked. But still Address Book didn't, but only under the following circumstances: As long as only "normal" groups are presented it works. As soon as I try to scroll down so that the very first smart group should become visible it wents into an infinte loop. I am unable to back-up the exisitng archive. I have tried a lot to change this: I had a backup BEFORE the upgrade of the data base. It doesn't work. I used earlier back-uped version of the data base. It doesn't work. I deleted in the Metadate file the Smart Group specifications: As soon as I start Address Book, they are recreated! And the same error occurs. I can export to create vcards. I can send emails from within Address Book. But as soon as Smart Groups are involved it doens't work any linger.
I alos tried immieditaely the advice of Mulder: It doens't change the behviour of Address Book.
    Is there an other advice?

  • Address Book application no longer launches

I broke my laptop a few weeks ago and had the data manually retrieved and put on a hard drive. I bought a new macbook pro earlier and I was manually transferring the application files when i think i accidentally overwrote the address book application. Note my old computer was using tiger - so every time I try to launch address book it says something like this address book doesnt work with this version of Mac OS X. So I deleted Address Book from application and ran the 10.5.3 update. Address Book is back, but now has no logo (it looks like the application logo) and doesn't do anything when I click on it.
How do I get my address book back!?

An update won't replace the whole program. You either need to get it from the instal DVD or copy from a Leopard version, then run update, again.
Pacivist will allow you to pull individual programs off the install DVD.

  • MacBook Address Book Application Does Not Run

MacBook OSX 10.5.8 - Address Book application will not run - it shows up in Applications Folder but will not run - either double click or command File - Open.  I have reinstalled the Address Book application with the original installation disk, which indicated the application was installed, still will not run.  Rebooted, reinstalled again - same result -- the Applications Folder shows the file size as 1.4 Mb - updated today - the installation disk showed approx. 53 Mb was being installed - not sure if the Application Directory is only showing a command file or what - also ran the hardware diagnostic and found no problems.  Software update shows current software is up to date.
Haven't used Address Book so do not know if it ever worked.  Need it now to sync with IPhone 4.  Any Ideas?

    rjackjr,
After reinstalling an Apple application from the installation disk, it is also necessary to reinstall the latest Combo Update for the installed system. In your case that would be Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update.
Try that and see what happens with your Address Book application.

  • Importing Netscape's address book into Apple's Address Book application

I want to import my email Netscape email address book into Apple's Address Book application. So I open the Address Book application and select import from the pull down menu. That brings up three choices, vCards, LDIF and Text. I previously had saved my Netscape address book as a pdf file. So I selected, Text. A window appeared from which I was to select where I wanted to get the file from. I made selections until I got to where my pdf file was and selected it. But I got the following error message.
The file you selected does not appear to be a valid comma separated values (csv) file nor a valid tab delimited file, please choose another file.
So I tried again and this time I selected LDIF, but when the file in my Netscape Users Profile that would appear to be my address book came up, it was “greyed out” and I could not select it. The file had the name “abook.mab”. It is not an LDIF file. There are no LDIF files in my profile.
So I tried selecting vCards, but I got the exact same results as above. The file that looks like it is my address book, is grayed out and cannot be selected.
So I went into Netscape to see if I could export my address book into Apple’s Address Book. I chose export from the Netscape menu and a window opened asking me to select where I wanted to export the file to. But when I got to Apple’s Address Book application, it was greyed out and could not be selected. The same thing happened when I tried to select Apple’s Mail program.
I have about three hundred email addresses in my Netscape address book. If these addresses have to be manually entered into Apple's Address Book, I will not make the switch to Apple's Mail program.

Netscape's Address Book window does not have that option. The Export option is under the Tools menu, but does not give you any options in the Tools menu. Once you select Export, the Export Address Book window opens. This window does have a format option where you can select either LDIF, Comma Separated or Tab Delimited. But it doesn't matter which of those I select, Apple's Address Book and Mail applications are not available for selection.

  • Address book data but missing Address Book application

This is strange but after upgrading to Snow Leopard, I seem to be missing my Address Book application. I can see my address book data but I cannot launch the Address Book application.
I have my contacts synced with Mobile Me & I'm not sure where the app went. I can still sync but just can't open up the Address Book app (obviously)
I am not sure how to get my Address Book app back....any suggestions?

you don't need Pacifists for this one. insert the snow leopard DVD, open it in finder and double-click on optional installs->optional installs.mpkg. follow the instructions and choose to install Address Book. then reinstall 10.6.2 combo update to bring AB to its current version.

  • Address Book Application has disappeared from iMac

my son has an iMac with OSX 10.4 (Tiger). the Address Book application has literally disappeared from his computer. i suspect that i need to re-install Address Book, but cannot find where/how to do that anywhere on apple.com. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Both the Tiger and Leopard Installer discs include an Optional Installs installer. Launch this installer (found in the Optional Installs folder on the Leopard disc) and at the root level in the Tiger Installer disc. Launch the installer and click the continue buttons until you reach the Custom Install screen. Click the triangle next to Applications, tick the box next to Address Book, and click the Install button to install Address Book.

  • Address book application won't open

I just got a new IPhone and I wanted to import my contacts from Entourage. I used the Help function to get the method and did an export using LDAP. However, the Address book application will not let me in to edit, import or do anything other than add a current email address to the address book. I tried opening the Address book from the Finder but when I click on it nothing happens and it doesn't open. What should I do next?

    sblady,
If you are running the latest updates to Entourage, you don't need to export the contacts with LDAP from Entourage to get them into Address Book.
    This article contains more information:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305938
I am unclear from the text of your post if Address Book is not opening at all, or if it is just not allowing you to do anything once it opens. This article shows several of the Address Book screens:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AddressBook/4.0/en/disc.html
Do any of those screens come up?
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Address Book Application Dissapeared!

I dont know what happened but I just went to open my Address Book from my dock and I got the question mark so I went to the apps folder, no Address Book! I did a spotlight search, and it found the Address Book Widget which I ran, and it had my contacts in it and my mail is still pulling from there, but what the **** happened to the Address Book Application?? I had this happen once before with the Preview program, just up and dissapeared on me.
I do not sync to mac mail, and nothing out of the ordinary. Was there yesterday, gone today. Any thoughts?

Well, applications don’t just disappear by themselves. If they keep disappearing from /Applications/ in your case, it has to be because someone removes them from there...
Anyway, you may reinstall Address Book as described in the second part of the following article:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
Note that Address Book may appear grayed out in the installer, but will be checked if you check Applications there, and will be installed if Address Book has been removed from the /Applications/ folder.
If the version of the system software on your install disks is earlier than what you’re using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, to bring Address Book back in sync with the rest of the system:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Using the address book as an LDAP DB

    Hi,
I was wondering if there was a project that enables the address book application to act as an LDAP server? or an LDAP server that can easily be configured in order to use the mac address book as its database.
This way it could be used by any mail client (other than mail).

You might want to take a look at Addressbook X LDAP (or it's free companion Addressbook 4 LDAP) available at http://www.j2anywhere.com. ABxLDAP allows the transparent sharing of contacts by transfering them to a shared LDAP directory. It has support for multiple schema and can also be extended.

  • Problems with the address book server! Really need some help here!

    Hello everyone!
for about some time now, we're having some troubbles with the address book server located on our Mac Pro Server running SL Server. The connected clients somehow show multiple entries of groups, contacts and everything else address book can show. Sometimes you see one group or contact about 20-30 times or even more.
How can the addressbook server on SL Server be configured that these faults won't show up again. With this present, using address book server is useless. As far as my knowledge goes, I've tried everything I can. I deleted the address book account set up on each client, readded it, but no help. I stopped the address book server on the Mac pro, but no help either.
For your further information: we're connecting 14 clients. Moste of the rum Lion, three run ML and several iDevices connect via WiFi.
Please help me, as this really is frustrating!
    Looking forward for your help.
    Regards,
    Moritz
