I think I fried my iMac...

I was replacing my HD in my iMac, I have opened the machine up a few times before, no big deal. Except this time the HD fell from its mount, while still connected to the cables. The power cable for the drive was off very very slightly. The drive, I think, touched the logic board when it was dangling by the cables (the imac is wall mounted).
I know, I probably shouldn't have done it this way but right now I'm wondering if anyone knows what would cause the power button to be completely unresponsive. No power seems to be going in. I tried a different HD, and no HD, and nothing happened. I unplugged the power cable and reconnected it. I have speakers hooked up by firewire and these do there audio test when i plugged the cable back in, as if there was power getting to the FW port...
Any ideas people.. I'm a little desperate

Sorry to hear it, I have no idea. You might have to break down and take it to an Apple Store.

I have an old iMac and am thinking of getting an iMac intel. Do I need a different type of usb and firewire cords to work with the new one?

What type of Firewire cable do you have?
If our not sure then first look up your computer with the serial number here,
    http://support.apple.com/specs/
Then take a look at the specs for the new iMac here and see if you have compatible cable,

  • What do ya think? Buy a iMac Core Duo or...............

What do ya think? Buy a iMac Core Duo 20" now or wait longer for the newer intel chips to come out and just be happy with my 17" G5 iMac?

If there is nothing wrong with your current machine, then why upgrade just for the sake of upgrading?
I have a rev B iMac G5, and am happy with it. A couple of weeks ago I got an iMac CD --- not to upgrade my current system, but to supplement it, as my little design studio is expanding and requires a second unit. Sure, the intel version is a bit faster---but not by much. Not enough to really make me consider trading in my other iMac,the G5,for a Duo Core.
So if you're perfectly happy with the G5 you have now, why rush into trading it in when there is a lot of life left in it yet. Think about it: the rev Bs aren't even a year old!

  • Thinking of moving to iMac from PC, got a few questions

I'm thinking of moving to an iMac for my next computer, probably in the next 6 months or so, but I have a few questions I wondered if you might be able to help me with.
I'm planning on getting Parrallels Desktop and installing Windows. Now I know Time Machine takes backups every hour. But I was wondering if it will also backup not only the Mac side but the Windows side too.
For example, if I install a program on the Mac side, edit a file, delete a file etc, Time Machine will backup the changes on its next backup. If I done the same while running Windows, i.e install a program on the Windows side, edit a file, delete a file etc, does Time Machine backup these changes for the Windows side too.
Presently for my backing up purposes. I have a hard drive caddie which has a esata connection as well as a USB connection. I have a 3.5 inch 1 TB sata drive that slides in and out of my caddie by way of (for want of a better word) a cradle. I'm planning on getting a 3.5 inch 2 TB sata drive and an additional cradle so that I can have a large collection of backups.
Now with the hard drive caddie I've mentioned above, to use it on an iMac, I would only be able to connect it via USB. My fear with this is that it will be a lot slower at taking backups to what I am currently used to seeing when I have it connected to my PC via esata.
I thought about this and noticed the LaCie eSATA Hub Thunderbolt Series on the Apple website http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H8875ZM/A/lacie-esata-hub-thunderbolt-series?f node=5f&fs=m.tsConnections%3Desata
From what I can gather, it would allow me to connect my current esata caddie up to it and it would increase the performance of it to Thunderbolt performance and also would allow me to make use of my current hard drive in the process. I was wondering if anyone has used this hub and if so, is the performance significantly improved. I thought that Thunderbolt would be a good and extremely fast way of taking backups. I will point out that I find that the taking backups every hour with Time Machine, for me would be a bit of an overkill, so I'm planning on just switching Time Machine off when I don't need it to take backups, and then switching it back on when I want it to take a backup. Doing this could result in larger backups than if I had it doing it hourly, so again I thought something that would give me Thunderbolt performance would be good for this scenario.
Any help and advice would be appreciated.

By default TimeMachine does not back up your Parallels virtual machine and if you think about it that's a good thing. Since the Virtual Machine is in effect a hard drive, just booting up Windows or launching a program changes the VM file as temporary files are created. My VM is 25GB so not only would TimeMachine be making a copy of the VM every hour that Parallels is running, it would be copying 25GB! Not good.
There are a number of solutions. On my desktop I use a different program to backup my VM each evening about the time I eat dinner. On my notebook I have a repeating reminder that asks if I've backed up my VM recently. As far files go, my solution is to save all my files to my Mac drive space so that TM backs them up.
USB is slower than eSATA but for day to day use, USB is fine for TimeMachine. The initial backup will be longer and OS updates will result in longer backups but otherwise....I have a USB drive connected to the computer I'm using right now. On most hourly backups TM is running a couple minutes and it doesn't require much bandwidth or CPU so the only time I really notice it running is I look at the drive light.

  • I am thinking of buying an imac presently using a PC with photoshop 7.0.  Can I change over and how much does it cost.

I am thinking of  changing over from the "PC" system to an Imac.  Presently we have Photoshop 7.0 and would like to know if we can cross change? and how much it would cost.  I found trying to contact Adobe directly using a phone,  very frustrating, if not impossible?  I got caught up in an endless circle, even though I tried different.choices each time.
    Wayne

I know that the program is old, however it was expensive to buy and I am really familiar with how it works, so that's why I would like to be able to do the cross over.
I don't work for Adobe but I can respond to a couple of your questions with certainty:
There is no upgrade (or crossgrade) path from Photoshop 7 Win to Photoshop 7 for Mac. That window closed many years ago.
Photoshop 7.0 will not run on modern Intel-based Macs. It was written for old PowerPC based Macs and the code will not run on Intel chips without Rosetta which is no longer available in current OS X operating systems.

  • Thinking of buying 24inch Imac. Got a few purchasing questions.

Hi, I am thinking of getting the 24inch Imac. 3.06Ghz processor. 4 gigs of ram. 1tb HD. And the price is $3,017.
I was wondering if I go to my nearest Apple store on Tax Free weekend (or the apple online store). Will I get Tax off the Imac?
Also my mom is a homeschool teacher. Will she be able to get the Education discount at the Apple Store (not online one)?

You'll need a lot more than tax off your imac. The question you should be asking is..."should I buy one?". You should (try and) talk to someone at Apple before you spend that much money, and ask them why the Video/Display on the 24" Intel Core Duo is so unreliable and flaky. They don't seem to want to address the SERIOUS issues. You have no idea what I'm going through (conveniently for Apple , after warranty expiration) with my lemon. I have owned dozens of Macs, and this is by far, the most unreliable, flaky, crash-prone, frustrating piece of equipment I have ever purchased. I have to place a large fan about 12 inches from the computer to prevent it from overheating. If the ambient room temperature gets over 22-23 degrees Celcius, the crashes are far more frequent... sometimes about 30 minutes apart - if I'm lucky enough to be able to work that long. I can't count how many preference and database files have been corrupted by these sudden shutdowns. Often, it takes many attempts (or a long wait) before I can reboot. I can barely see what I'm writing now, because there's a grey line through most of the text. I've emailed Apple, but received no response - no surprise there. I send many crash reports a day too. They need to concentrate on developing a reliable, stable platform before they waste so much of their time and my money on pretty, shiny boxes. I'm disgusted. I posted (just a few) examples of what I see all day, every day, at: http://gallery.me.com/jjmcharg/100009
Good luck with your search for a computer.

  • I think my combination of iMac/Aperture is slow

Too much frecuently my iMac stand "freezed" (the coulored wheel messing around) when Aperture is processing a file. I think it´s not a problem itself but a lack of RAM of something like that.
When I added 1 GB Ram Aperture improved slightly
I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo wtih a 2.16 GH processor, 2,5GB RAM
and a Radeon HD 2400XT ATI 128MB memory
I wonder if improving my graphic card in my next iMac will help to go faster.

Probably. But even better would be to go to a Mac Pro, good video card and 8 GB RAM or more, even a 2006 model.

  • Fried Mac, iMac lets not sing a song!

We got one of the new iMacs when they came out( rev.B) and now its really starting to act up. I logged of the sims 2( this game runs slower then I think it should) I went to look at my email, I opened Camino( would not trade this for the world) and clicked on .Mac when I went to pick the icon it started selecting the page ( like click and drag) to get to my mail I had to right click and open a tab. after I was done I got annoyed by it and restarted it, when I did that it took a long time for the screen to light up. When it did it started sounding like a jet very loud and got the guinea pig up and noisy. I restarted it and tried getting into single user mode but it said something about missing operating systems and such. now I don't want to turn it on. Can someone help please? iMac G5 2.0Ghz, 1MB Ram 160 HD 60 % full.

    Hello Daniel:
Since you cannot start up from the install DVD, and since your system is (I assume) still under warranty, I would call Applecare - they have trained diagnostic people. If it is a warranty issue, there will be no charge if you are within the one year hardware warranty term.

  • I'm tired of windows thinking of getting an iMac

I don't know if this is the right discussion board. I've been getting tired of Windows and thought of giving osx a try. I've been trying to choose between an iMac or a PowerMac. I want one that is at least equal to or better than my pc. How fast is the iMac 2.1GHZ processor?
    My current pc has:
    An Intel P4 HT 3.2GHZ
    512MB RAM
    250GB hard drive
    Nvidia GeForce FX 5200

    Hi Michelle,
As noted above a speed comparisson is a little tricky. You're also looking at a Desktop machine in the iMac and we don't know what your current machine is. I think that if you price out a similar machine, that is a desktop replacement v an all in one, you end up w/ the Mac being about $400.00 cheaper than a similarly configured PC Desktop Replacement machine.
If I was to compare the two I would do it in terms of general use and speed in most areas.
Using Photoshop CS2 or even Bridge on an older 1.6G5 works fine. There are threads where people rave about the speed on a 20" iMac. I would imagine that the speed is enough within a non-apple application provided it doesn't utilize core image. If core image is used then I think you'd be at least evenly matched by the mac, if not overpowered.
For most of the consumer Applications you have Apple branded products that come with your machine that are as fast as you would need, easier to use, and take advantage of the machines architecture.
Unlesss you need M$ Project, you will find that running Microsoft Office on a Mac is a fast and pleasant experience so if you stick to Office for a lot of things you'll have no speed issues.
If you're doing HD a lot then jumping to the fastest PowerMac would probably be better than what you have now and then you get into hardware.
The 20" has all the hardware you want. It's got an incredible screen, ample graphics capabilities, nice sized drive, bt 2.0 + edr, 802.11G, Slot loading dual-layer superdrive (basically the maximum capability burner you can get w/o lightscribe), built in powered firewire v usually ilink, USB 2.0, etc. A PowerMac will give you the same things less the monitor, which is quite a jump in money.
For Gaming I think most people who have used a console w/ good games would just use a console regardless of what computer they have. There are enough Mac game titles to completely stop your work and social productivity if you so choose.
If you get down to the user interface then I think the mac has a PC beat w/o question. IMHO even vista compared to tiger isn't going to change peoples minds. The current OS on a 2.1 is responsive, easy to use, extremely intuitive, offers all the advanced options you would want and more than you could use if you ever open terminal; while maintaining such an elegantly simple choice of settings or tasks that no assistants are required. There is a respectable help system for applications.
I think there are two things which are traded as platform currency: stability, and mal-ware/viruses/trojans/spy-ware (collectively illness). A Mac is rock solid. It just doesn't go around crashing. You can create a kernel panic if you really really try, but you never have to reinstall the operating system or take drastic measures. You can infact have upgraded your operating system through all the different ones in the past 5 years and have a completely serviceable and fast computer. My PC, and I gather most of them, has crashed (although it's not a frequent thing) and I have needed to completely re-install the OS at least once. I don't think you can get close to the stability of Mac OS X. So then there is illness. My PC requires preventative medicinal applications on a consistent basis and they do two things (slow down everything, especially installs), and cost me money. Even with a full immunization I can't take it out of isolation without some bar popping somewhere asking me to install this component or that or saying it was blocked because it might be a risk. I have absolutely no faith in the security of Windows and having to pay for security apps adds a lot to the price (not so on the mac side).
So sure, you might be a little faster w/ a limitted application, but you probably pay more, lose speed because 'X application is waiting for X anti-spyware to finish a scan of SomeWeird_NamedThing'.
My advice is go to an Apple store and try the machines. Your experience shoul

  • I swear I think my 2009 27" iMac is dying?

I was having a problem with the SuperDrive wouldn't work all the time. I took it to the Apple Store to get them to figure it out and he said it would be $150 to replace the SuperDrive. We decided that I would do a complete clean install of Lion and see if that fixed the SuperDrive however it didn't. Amost immediately the problem was still there. So now I need a SuperDrive based upon what the Apple Genuis said however after a couple of weeks I seem to have other problems.
I seem to get a lot of spinning beach balls, the computer becomes unresponsive. Quite a few times the computer won't wake up by hitting anything on the keyboard, mouse or trackpad. So I'll have to hit the power button to wake it up but the mouse, keyboard or trackpad still won't work and I'm forced to manually power it down by hold the power button for a few seconds. After I start it up and it gets to the login screen the mouse, keyboard and trackpad work fine. But if the computer goes to sleep again, it does the same thing [unresponsive]!
Just a minute ago this happenend and my wife hit the power button to wake it up. After the screen came on she put in her USB flash drive and the computer sceen IMMEDIATELY black. I looked/listening to the computer and it just shut down on her. This has never happened and that's why with all of these other things going on, I'm saying that there's definitely something wrong.
I don't want to pay to put in a SuperDrive when there could be something else totally wrong with it, so I'm sure you understand. I feel really bad that this is my FIRST Mac and after less than a year after my Apple warranty is up all of this crap is going wrong with my computer.
Does anyone know of some things I could do to see what's the matter. I don't mind buying a part or two for it but I don't want to buy parts that aren't broken. I have a feeling the hard drive is going out, is there anything I can do to check it. I've also got a little video of what it's doing when it won't wake up if anyone is interested. I've done the reset the PRAM & disk permissions already with no change in behaviour.
    Ideas?

I agree.  I have just come back from the Genius Bar in Sydney Chatswood where they are looking into a problem with the power.  The 27" iMac is only 15 months old and 89 days out of warranty.  Martin the 'genius' didn't seem preturbed that this could be a major problem on a machine that cost over $2300AUS such a short time ago - a lot of money in these times - he obviously earns more than we do!  I am really annoyed and feel that I have been let down by Mac.  As an avid iPhone user and going to iMac, I am feeling very annoyed at both the quality of the product and the attitude of the Genius Bar.
the machine was also showing the same signs as yours - slow wheels etc.
Is there any recourse - it is not sustainable to sell products at that price which only last for 15months.
    Anyone else have similar problems.
    Anne

  • I am thinking of updating my iMac (OSX v10.6.8) to 10.9...

But I do not have a portable hard-drive to save all my data separately. As my iMac is 1TB, its quite hard to find a reliable portable hard-drive that's both durable and reliable.
I really would like to update to 10.9. To my knowledge, I have absolutely in no shape or form any kind of WD application or hard-drive (thank god).
Will any of the internal data (apps, photos, videos, music etc from different accounts) be lost if I decided to update now, without the backup?
    Should I risk it?

As A Brody wrote ...  Don't forget rosetta.
You have obviously had the machine some time and probably have many PPC apps, none of which will work with Mavericks.    To check you could run through this link and compare with the apps you have.
    Application compatibility table - RoaringApps
Frankly, Mavericks is a big step through two previous OS upgrades.   I would stay put (and I follow my own thoughts here, I am sticking with SL).
Ah, just noticed A Brody's link includes Roaring Apps (in disguise).

  • I'm thinking of getting an imac...

Currently I have a docking station for my work ThinkPad laptop and use the screen & keyboard... Will I be able to do this with the imac screen?

With the 2011 iMac's you cannot do that unless the laptop has a Thunderbolt port which I'm sure it does not. The feature you're referring to is called Target Display Mode. The 2011 iMac's have Thunderbolt ports however the 27" 2009 & 2010 iMacs have mini display ports which would work. You can still buy 2010 iMac's from Apple's refurbished store. Now before you discount the a refurbished iMac know that almost every person that get's one cannot tell the difference from a new machine and they come with the same 1 year warranty as a new machine. In addition you can buy AppleCare for them which extends the warranty to 3  years from the date of purchase. That in addition to them saving you some money make Apple Refurbished machines a VERY viable option. For example at the Refurbished Mac Computers you can currently find a 2010 27" i5 iMac for $1419, if you check the store often inventory comes and goes so you can find some pretty nice deals.

  • Think I fried my external FW HD

Today I got the little spinning ball that wouldn't go away, so after the usual things to do I had to force restart by holding down the power button. I have 2 external LaCie firewire drives connected, nothing happened to one the other one won't mount. I read a ton of posts and solutions here, unplug for 10 minutes, reset the pram, different cables, computer, ports, but nothing works. The drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility and in System Profile it just says "unknown device".
So after reading some posts, because there isn't that horrible clicking sound you sometimes hear when drives goes bad, I'm thinking that the firewire bridge or controller or whatever is it is no good. Read that in another post that those things can go bad so I'm hoping that's it. So I'm going to try to buy a firewire enclosure and stick the hard drives in there and see if they mount. But my quesion is (afer all that finally a question!) the bad drive is a LaCie d2 500gb drive and it has 2 250gb drives in there connected together so that must mean they're mirrored or raided or stripped, I don't understand how any of that works. Ok so the question, can I take each drive out of the LaCie case, stick them in one at a time in another case that I'll buy and my data will still be there or would those two drives still need to be connected together to work? Or maybe I need to buy an case that would allow the 2 drives to be connected if that exists?
Speaking of cases, I can't find any that says it'll accept two drives. But I found this one at OWC for a single drive http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW912U2/
Any thoughts on this case? Looks ok?
Thanks for reading thru my ramblings and any help is much appreciated!

    Hi Dan Gilkey-
Although I certainly appreciate the star and all it's accompanying value, the cigar and shot seem much heartfelt. I must find the button to convert stars to smokes and drinks (;>)
The power supply bricks put out 2 or 3 or 4 voltages. That is why there are like 5 pins in the connector. So the blue light supply and the drive spin supply work, but probably the 5 volt portion that supplies the circuitry is shot.
Whatever. If you have more than one of these drives that you rely on tis a wise move to order a spare while you are at it. The bricks seem to fail frequently,
Don't forget that if that drive is still under the 1 year warranty LaCie should replace the supply brick no charge.

  • Ok so I think I fried my airport and sound cards

as I posted in another section, I recently plugged my macbook into the speaker outputs of a PA system so I could record. Bad idea. As it turns out, i'm guessing the high voltage may have fried my logic board or something as i've no built in audio anymore nor airport card detection. I'm online now using the built in Ethernet and wondering how I can get sound back (I know I can replace my airport card). But as I've read, the sound is linked to the logic board maybe and I was wondering if it's possible to fix it, or can I send it to apple and pay for a replacement logic board?

As I said it wouldn't matter. Your warranty would be void even if it was a month old. This kind of damage is not covered under apples warranty. You would have to pay for it anyway.
This is from the apple warranty.
"This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (b) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (c) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (d) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider; (e) to a product or part that has been modified to significantly alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; (f) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; or (g) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced."
