I think I fried my processor

My iBook stopped turning on one day, so I decided to take it back apart and see what was wrong. I found the heatsink (along with most of the EMI) wasn't seated properly. I push the power button, and the number lock sparks for possibly half a second, then it does nothing. A couple of times I had it on, but no boot chime, and nothing on the screen after at least 5 minutes, if not 15.
Anyway, I was wondering if I could get a second opinion on this.

I just got it to turn on, been on for about 10 minutes. Little to no warmth around the processor. It just sits there at a grey screen (no happy mac or other symbols). The strangest thing I noticed, however, is that when the corresponding keys are pressed, both Num Lock and Caps Lock lights light up.

  • Think i destroyed the processor bed (K7N2G-L)

I'm Sh**ing myself right now. I can't get my PC to boot because the bed that the CPU sits on doesn't work. I tried two CPU's just to check. What can i do?!? ;(

I don't think posting the rest of my hardware is going to help. Basically the plastic bed with the holes you place the CPU in is dead. I tried two processors and i've just tried the processors in another mobo to make sure i'm right.
The PC will boot but the LED's on back will hang reporting a damaged CPU.

  • Think I fried my external FW HD

Today I got the little spinning ball that wouldn't go away, so after the usual things to do I had to force restart by holding down the power button. I have 2 external LaCie firewire drives connected, nothing happened to one the other one won't mount. I read a ton of posts and solutions here, unplug for 10 minutes, reset the pram, different cables, computer, ports, but nothing works. The drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility and in System Profile it just says "unknown device".
So after reading some posts, because there isn't that horrible clicking sound you sometimes hear when drives goes bad, I'm thinking that the firewire bridge or controller or whatever is it is no good. Read that in another post that those things can go bad so I'm hoping that's it. So I'm going to try to buy a firewire enclosure and stick the hard drives in there and see if they mount. But my quesion is (afer all that finally a question!) the bad drive is a LaCie d2 500gb drive and it has 2 250gb drives in there connected together so that must mean they're mirrored or raided or stripped, I don't understand how any of that works. Ok so the question, can I take each drive out of the LaCie case, stick them in one at a time in another case that I'll buy and my data will still be there or would those two drives still need to be connected together to work? Or maybe I need to buy an case that would allow the 2 drives to be connected if that exists?
Speaking of cases, I can't find any that says it'll accept two drives. But I found this one at OWC for a single drive http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW912U2/
Any thoughts on this case? Looks ok?
Thanks for reading thru my ramblings and any help is much appreciated!

    Hi Dan Gilkey-
Although I certainly appreciate the star and all it's accompanying value, the cigar and shot seem much heartfelt. I must find the button to convert stars to smokes and drinks (;>)
The power supply bricks put out 2 or 3 or 4 voltages. That is why there are like 5 pins in the connector. So the blue light supply and the drive spin supply work, but probably the 5 volt portion that supplies the circuitry is shot.
Whatever. If you have more than one of these drives that you rely on tis a wise move to order a spare while you are at it. The bricks seem to fail frequently,
Don't forget that if that drive is still under the 1 year warranty LaCie should replace the supply brick no charge.

  • I think I fried my iMac...

I was replacing my HD in my iMac, I have opened the machine up a few times before, no big deal. Except this time the HD fell from its mount, while still connected to the cables. The power cable for the drive was off very very slightly. The drive, I think, touched the logic board when it was dangling by the cables (the imac is wall mounted).
I know, I probably shouldn't have done it this way but right now I'm wondering if anyone knows what would cause the power button to be completely unresponsive. No power seems to be going in. I tried a different HD, and no HD, and nothing happened. I unplugged the power cable and reconnected it. I have speakers hooked up by firewire and these do there audio test when i plugged the cable back in, as if there was power getting to the FW port...
Any ideas people.. I'm a little desperate

Sorry to hear it, I have no idea. You might have to break down and take it to an Apple Store.

  • Ok so I think I fried my airport and sound cards

as I posted in another section, I recently plugged my macbook into the speaker outputs of a PA system so I could record. Bad idea. As it turns out, i'm guessing the high voltage may have fried my logic board or something as i've no built in audio anymore nor airport card detection. I'm online now using the built in Ethernet and wondering how I can get sound back (I know I can replace my airport card). But as I've read, the sound is linked to the logic board maybe and I was wondering if it's possible to fix it, or can I send it to apple and pay for a replacement logic board?

As I said it wouldn't matter. Your warranty would be void even if it was a month old. This kind of damage is not covered under apples warranty. You would have to pay for it anyway.
This is from the apple warranty.
"This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (b) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (c) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (d) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider; (e) to a product or part that has been modified to significantly alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; (f) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; or (g) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced."

    Is this true?
Heavy use, running too many apps burn the processor?
My friend's 5800 would get hot whenever he used it.
He went to nokia care and the people there said that the processor was burnt and was out of repair.
If used, then the battery would explode.
His phone was out of warranty.
    Can this happen?
Im also an s60v5 user and would like to know.

Sounds like something coming from the rear of a male cow to me, only instances I've heard of are when people 'overclock' there phones with hacking, from the factory most Nokia processors are 'underclocked' precisely to avoid this kind of issue. • "Genius" told me I fried both Xeon Processors in my Mac Pro

So I've been having a couple problems with my Mac Pro. Sometimes when turning on the MP or when coming out of sleep mode the display won't come on. Tested the display and cables on other machines and it works fine. I'm able to turn off the computer blind (control+eject, return) so I assumed it was the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600) but before I replaced it I decided to take it to the Genius Bar to have it looked at.
The Genius told me the fans were running high when he powered it up and said that wasn't good then after a brief reboot (while holding optioncommand+UP, whatever that does) he said I fried both processors, and yes he figured it out that fast.
I take good care of this machine cleaning it out with canned air once every other week and I don't use my MP for anything heavy duty that would fry the state of the art processor, I have the Adobe CS4 master collection but really only use Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash. I also have Logic Express and Office but that's about it for major software.
First question (that I didn't ask because I was floored by him telling me this) is that I have the 2.8Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, doesn't that only have one processor? How did I fry BOTH of them when I thought there was only one?
I did ask how this is possible and he just said "there are a lot of ways it could have happened", then suggests I sell my MP on Ebay and buy a new one because its going to cost me $2000 to fix it. Now why would I buy a brand new one if the high-end processors can just fry for no reason?
So anyway, I get the MP home trying to figure out what to do. I take it half apart and give it a good cleaning, plug it in and BAM working fine. So obviously not the processor like the "genius" told me in his 5 minute examination.
So my main question is any idea's on what this could be AND what apps/software can I use to help pinpoint problems like this?

Fans always run high when you first power it on. It's normal, just the system testing itself out.
There is Hardware that turns the fans on maximum at startup, and keeps turning them back to maximum. If the system is working, the processor reads the temperatures (in the processors and various parts of the cabinet) and takes action to turn down any fans that are running too high for current conditions. It has to keep coming back and telling them to slow down -- if the processor halts, the fans go back to maximum within a few seconds.
I think the "genius" concluded that if the fans did not turn down right away, "your processors were fried." That is way too simple an explanation. There are lots of problems that could cause the fans to keep running on high. Also, I am not sure how many Mac Pros these guys actually see.

  • D-Bracket (processor initialization hang up)

Hey guys i need some help,
So i built this comp about 2 months ago or so and it was working fine, then it started weird by turning itself off sometimes. So i brought it home to work on it over my spring break. It keeps hanging with the d-bracket LEDs showing red in the 1 and 4 position and green in the 2 and 3 positions:
    Red    - Green
    Green - Red
Looking at the led configurations i think that is the processor initialization hang up. I'm hoping that my processor isnt fried, because that would be pretty disappointing.
i put my system specs in my signature, if you need to know anything else let me know.
    Thanks in advance guys.

Hello, provide PSU details(can be found into PSU sticker)
    that doesn't look good..:
    2GB Memory (4x PC 2100 512MB)
4 sticks... unknown brand probably mixed, low rated freq...
remove power cord from the PSU and Clear CMOS Guide
try to boot with one stick only into DIMM slot close to CPU socket.
check CPU cooling system too. (apply new thermal paste, check & clear CPU socket and CPU cooler from any dust, replace CPU cooler if condition is bad.)
best will be to get decent memory 2 sticks at least PC3200.

  • Stuck on Processor Initialization

    Hi all,
Tonight I decided to upgrade to Windows 7. I preordered almost 2 months ago so I was quite eager to install it :D I also purchased 2 more gigs of ram.
So after I backed up PC I turned of PC, grounded myself and installed the extra 2 gigs of ram. Cleared CMOS, booted PC and it went into Windows XP  no worries. Shut down PC again, un-plugged my IDE HardDrives and all USB devices. Installed Windows 7 and all went ok, had a play around with W7 after about 30 mins I shut PC down again, grounded myself, plugged in IDE HardDrives. Switched on PC and it made a 3 second beep and repeated every 5 seconds or so. According to D-Bracket it stuck on "Memory Detection Test". So I took out the modules one by until PC started to boot. Replaced modules and it passed the memory test but then nothing else happened ie not posting and gets stuck at "Processor Initialization". I know this because the d-bracket lights are as follows 1-Red, 2-Green, 3 - Green, 4 - Red.
There was at one point where all 4 lights on the D-Bracket were red and nothing else happened. Discovered there could be an issue with the processor. Any way I Cleared CMOS and again stuck on "Processor Initialization". I'm starting to feel that somehow I fried the processor, what you guys/gals think?
    any help appreciated.
    Cheers

    Thanks Fredrik for quick reply.
You reminded me, I forgot to say I did accidently remove the power to the fan for the main board but I did put it back straight away!
Main Board power cable connected defo.
This is what I did just now:
    1. Removed all ram.
    2. Rebooted and got the beep.
    3. Tried all memory sticks in slot one and each time D-Bracket reported "Processor Initialization"
    4. Replaced all Ram.
    5. Removed SATA HD, USB PCI Card and Graphics Card turned on PC and still getting "Processor Initialization"
So as it stands there is nothing connected apart from fans and the system wont get past "Processor Initialization".

  • Could I install OS-X on an HP 510 Laptop running an Intel 2.13 processor?

I hate PCs but, here in the office, I have staff using them for MS Access and data processing etc.. However, I saw what I thought was a bargain today in a new HP laptop running what I think is the same processor in my Mini-Mac. The question is would I be able to run OS-X on this alongside Vista or would it be a case of wiping the drive and installing Tiger? I'd like to run Access on the Mac but that's another problem!

Yes - that's pretty good advice. I wasn't aware that it was illegal. Thanks. The idea to install boot camp is an option I must admit. It would only be for Access which is a **** nuisance in that it'll only run on a PC. I thought I sawy something recently on a UK Mac Users forum that there is a programme that will run an XP programme on a Mac. Not sure how successful it would be with Office 2003 though. It's just hassle everytime I need one of the databases in use here....
    Thanks to you both!

  • Upgrading AGP Graphics Processor; Dual vs. Single

So i just received a pair of old G4 towers. They're both AGP Graphics 400mhz machines, and i'm thinking of upgrading the processors on both. From what i understand from reading through the forums, they can take an OEM processor from some of the newer G4 towers. I've checked, and both machines have Uni-North numbers greater than 7 (one is 7, the other is 8), so they both can accept dual processors. Trying to weigh my options and decide what's best, taking into consideration that the bus on the AGP machine is only 100mhz compared to 133/167mhz bus on the faster processors...
    1. Single 1ghz/933mhz/867mhz processor (will run underclocked)
    2. Dual 500mhz processor (will run true @ 1ghz due to the 100mhz bus on the AGP machine)
    2. Dual 1ghz/800mhz Processor (will run underclocked)
Thoughts? This would no doubt be a cheap upgrade, there are plenty of processors on eBay for under $100, and that makes it worthwhile for me.
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Single 1ghz/933mhz/867mhz processor (will run underclocked)
This will also require a 12v power modification to use a QS processor in a sawtooth.
    2. Dual 500mhz processor (will run true @ 1ghz due to the 100mhz bus on the AGP machine)
This will run a true +500 MHz+, not 1 GHz. The dual processor just increases multi-thread processing ability. They do not double the clock speed.
But, this is a plug and play upgrade, and a nice improvement over a single 400 MHz processor.
    2. Dual 1ghz/800mhz Processor (will run underclocked)
Again, there are voltage differences in the machine's which must be overcome.
You can find information on the actual modifications needed Here.
If you are capable of doing the mod work, I think it would be a fun project, and provide a boost to the old machines.

  • Memory vs. Processor upgrade?  Processor upgrade requires OS 9?

I have a Power Mac G4 QS with a 733 MHz processor and 640 MB of RAM. I plan to use it mainly for video editing, and was thinking about upgrading the processor or RAM or perhaps both. My first question is, should I should upgrade just one (processor OR memory) or both?
My second question requires a bit of explaining. I've already installed all of the software I will be using before realizing that this computer didn't have a version of OS 9 installed (I'm running 10.3.8, I think; I'm actually not on that computer at the moment, so I can't check). I've read that in order to perform a processor upgrade, you have to run a firmware upgrade that only works in OS 9.2.2, so I was wondering, how add OS 9 on to the computer without messing up my OS and/or wiping out all of the software I've already installed?
(Yes, I'm a Mac newbie, at least as far as installation goes.)
Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 733   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   640 MB RAM, 40 GB HD

    Hi,
    CPU's:
This processor is available, it does NOT need a manufacturers Firmware installed. It is also a dual processor and will work very well for video processing. This is a bargain, very fast too.
    http://www.yourmacstore.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=548
This dual processor needs manufacturer's Firmware installed but does NOT need Mac OS 9.2 for the install. It starts the Mac from a Disk and installs the Firmware for it, simple - just follow directions.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MAXG48D1700/
•••Only Sonnet upgrades still require you to boot into Mac OS 9.2.2 for the Firmware install.
    Memory:
The prices are down right now, you can get a stick of 512MB RAM for $59, see this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/133SD512328/
The above are some places to look at CPU's and memory. The first CPU and two sticks of 512MB RAM for a total of less than $600 will make your QS quite fast.
That seems a good deal to me, if you like the computer you currently have.
The new computer is always an option.
    Regards,
    Dave

    Dear Mac users,
I have a problem to install GarageBand on my PowerBook G4 (based on processor PowerPC G4).
When it starting installation it always says that you should at first has it in Applications.
What can I do with it?
Or maybe it won't be work on the version of my Mac OS and PowerPC processor?
Please let me know about it!
    Help me with this problem!
    Thanks in advance!

The current version of GB (and the previous one too, I think) requires an Intel processor. You'll probably get a version of GB 08 cheaply on Ebay or elswhere on the net. It might be a little sluggisch on your computer.

  • Physical processor to Logical Processor ratio

    Hi Experts !
I came across this old blog post on Physical processor to Logical processor calculation.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/08/13/using-powershell-to-find-the-virtual-processor-to-logical-processor-ratio-of-hyper-v.aspx
The straight formula I see here is
    Write-Host (@(Get-WmiObject -Namespace "root\virtualization\v2" -Class MSVM_Processor).count / (@(Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Processor) | measure -Property NumberOfLogicalProcessors -Sum).Sum) "Virtual Processor (s) per logical processor"
    -ForegroundColor yellow
    As per this formula, My Hp Blade server BL460c with 2 X Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60GHz, 2600 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s) can have 2.125 Virtual Processor (s) per logical processor
I have 32 Logical Processors and can have have 68 Virtual Processors in this case.
    Is this assumption correct?
Is this formula applicable for even an AMD processor?
    Cheers.

    Thanks Tim.
I got your point.  Its purely on the load on individual VM.
Now we are in the process of implementing Exchange 2013 and as per the technet article, it clearly says  Virtual to Logical processor ratio recommended for Exchange is 2:1. This made me to think again on the processor ration now.
Many hardware virtualization products allow you to specify the number of virtual processors that should be allocated to each guest virtual machine. The virtual processors located in the guest virtual machine share a fixed number of logical processors
in the physical system. Exchange supports a virtual processor-to-logical processor ratio no greater than 2:1, although we recommend a ratio of 1:1. For example, a dual processor system using quad core processors contains a total of 8 logical processors in
the host system. On a system with this configuration, don't allocate more than a total of 16 virtual processors to all guest virtual machines combined.
Its a recommendation from the individual product group and only applicable here.
    Thanks for the help.

  • MSI 915GM4 Motherboard and a P4 s775 2.66/1M/533 Processor - Dont Work

    Hello Everyone,
    I bought an MSI 915GM4 Motherboard and a P4 s775 2.66/1M/533 Processor yesterday and
assembled it by myself. But when I power it on, it won't display anything nor you can any hear beeping sounds.
So I tried to pull it out from the case to test only the Processor, Motherboard, PowerSupply, Memory and Monitor, but still It won't display nor you can hear beeping sounds that would indicate the cause of the problem.
Later then, I contacted a friend of mine who has a Celeron D s775 Processor and tried it on my MSI Motherboard. Its only the processor that was swapped and nothing else. Guess what? It displays and even loads to windows. So I was started thinking that my own processor might be the problem. But I did not conclude right away that the
processor is the problem and so what I did is I borrowed an Asrock Motherboard (s775)
from the same friend. Now, if this will not work then its confirm that my processor
might be the problem. But I was surprised when it work and still boot up to windows.
Confusion wraps my mind, the next time I started thinking about compatibility issues
and so I visited MSI site looking for CPU Support of my Motherboard and found out that
it should support. Well, to try to resolve this issues I tried flashing the bios for
the motherboard of its latest version updates, but sitll no luck..
Hmmmm.... what could be it? Did I miss something?
Well guys if you could help me on this I really appreciate it.. I don't really know now what move to take.
