I think I know the answer but just to be sure - connecting a data cable & the ONT box....

So I have an ONT box with Coax out - it provides TV, phone & data. I have a PC I'd like to connect, unfortunately it isn't wireless & even if it were, it is too far from the router to pick up wireless. However it is close to the ONT box so running a cable from there would be ideal. However my understanding is if you are wired with Coax, the ethernet port in the box is disabled.
So is my only option running physical cable from my router to this PC? It is a very long run and it wouldn't be easy. Any other suggestions or is the only way?
Thanks,
BC

That is correct.
Since you have coax at the ONT, your main splitter is probably close by.
You could connect a MOCA adapter to your main splitter.
That would give you an ethernet port you could connect to.
Can I get an ethernet connection in a room with only coax?

I have a question that I think I know the answer to, but am looking for confirmation.  I have a desktop computer at home that has clip art loaded onto it.  I recently got an iPad and am looking for something similar.  I assume I need to get an APP for it, and if that is correct, does anyone have one that they like?

Sort of.  There is an app called art shop that gives you a place to park clip art.   But I don't think you really need it.
If you have a collection of clip art you want available, move it to the camera roll on your pad/ phone, then copy paste into your document the clip you want.
You can get them into the camaera roll by putting them in a single event in your picture library and syncing them over,  or e mail them to your self, and save to the camera roll, or send them to drop box, and bring them down that way.
The challenge is getting them all in one place to make it easy for you to find, which is why syncing might be the best approach in the long run.
As near as I can tell there is not a ready made clip art collection in app format laying around.

Okay, so we've eliminated the lack of space since you have plenty.
See the screenshot from my Mac here:
Page ins and page outs - post those (or just post the same type of screenshot). If you have a lot of those, that means that your machine needs to keep swapping RAM around to make the best of what is available which can result in slow responses.
Also post the total amount of RAM you have (in my case, I have 12 GB)
You free RAM of 221 MB is very, very low - I'm guessing you only have a total of 2 GB. If that is the case, I would absolutely max out the machine (if you don't know how much RAM you can put in, post your model number here so we can help with that).

Depending on which country's store you are in, the previews are supposed to be either 30 or 90 seconds.
The last few days there have been several posts here that they are not getting the full preview.  There is certainly no setting to control that, so I suppose the problem is at the store.
My suggestion is to try again in a few days, or to purchase from another online music download retailer.

  • I think I know the answer,but...

    Hi everyone.
I think I already know the answet to this question, but I'll better make sure. I need to go over a friend's house for some work and she has wireless connection over her place. Her Mac works with this connection, however hers is a much newer model than mine. I was wondering if I must have the AirPort to connect to the wireless internet in her home.
    I do, don't I?
    Thanks!

I was wondering if I must have the AirPort to connect to the wireless internet in her home.
If you want to connect wirelessly, you need AirPort or a third-party component which supports either the 802.11b or 802.11g protocols. Some wireless base stations provide an Ethernet port which doesn't require a wireless connection to use, but the computer needs to stay near the base station.

  • Odd audio question - I think I know the answer... but...

    Ok...
Gave 2 dvx's to my sound guy to record our band.
    (Yes... problem is already evident)
I walked him thru the line/mic level issue and he assured me he had it under control.
The lock'd down camera by the board would be fed two feeds... BOTH would come in at (quote) "Mic" level. Said he'd hook the board feed thru a direct box that would spit out mic level... and the second feed was a mono mix from two ambient mics. I'd mix in post.
    So --
After being upset because the locked off camera was out of focus for both sets... I decided to work on it anyway.
I loaded the Static capture into the viewer and obviously I had two mono fades. As the viewer was playing Right Side audio meter was dancing around 9 and left side was dancing around 6. Sounded fine as I monitored it except for the phasing... no big deal.
Ugh, I thought... he didn't check the levels on the camera inputs.
So I drop it into the timeline and turn off the left side channel... BBBBUUUUUZZZZZZZZZ -- dang thing's pegged!!
    What?
Go back to the viewer... dancing at 9... back to the timeline... BBBBUUUUUZZZZZZZZZ -- dang thing's pegged!!
Left side sound fine in the timeline and dances at -6.
    ANY clue?
Never had this happen before... any way to take the Right Audio off the viewer and use what ever it is trying to play?

Edit -- Right side of this pic is Viewer audio... Left side is the timeline audio loaded BACK to the viewer...

  • The cable doesn't work properly when connected as data cable.

    Hi,
I have recently encountered problem of the cable. The thing is that if i use it just for charging with the plug, it works fine. But when i wanna use it with computer (i.e., accessing itunes, etc) or with my car, it doesn't work properly, it keeps switching between charging and discharging very fast. I will appreciate your quick support!
    Regards,
    Farhan

Just for all the people to know, I found out the solution. You have to mark the correct side of the charging cable which connects at inlet of the phone. Because this point acts as a chip when used as data cable or auxiliary use (car, etc). That's why it charges with the plug on any side. I don't know what's the frequency of it happening to iphone 5s users, because I bought it recently (iOS 7.1.1) Hope it helps to others in future.

  • I think I know the answer...

My macbook has been a good and trusted friend for nearly two years. Once in a while the screen would flicker a little when it was first woken up, especially if it had been asleep for some hours.
However its every time I wake it from sleep now and the flickering can be quite dramatic. After a while it settles down.
Would this be the back lighting on its way out?
Other problems include sometimes not hooking onto my network from sleep, shutting the lid and trying again usually works. And sometimes when I close the lid, it won't goto sleep and keeps going until eventually killing the battery. Or sometimes trying to restart it will restart making then DVD drive noise, then it will do it again before restarting.
I have a few months of warranty left, would these symptoms, especially the screen be classed as wear and tear?
Can I expect them to fix it even though I changed my own harddrive?

If it continues to reproduce itself under the original hard drive, your case for having it repaired under warranty would be stronger. As long as when you reinstall the drive you don't damage your system near the drive any further. A repair technician would be able to tell the difference if the replacement of the drive affected the system's stability or not. Still, you should consult with a technician what your options are.

Will someone experienced in post production sound design and mixing please confirm that Soundtrack Pro 2 is as capable as ProTools for what we do and need to do VERY QUICKLY?
Boy!... it really hard to virtually start all over with a new way of thinking / learning this platform. Seems like it has some nice features but I need to navigate my regions / clips and timecode locations MUCH QUICKER! Lining up, snapping regions to cursor, grouping tracks, automation, etc...

  • Wi-Fi shows in top left corner, but says I can't connect

This just recently started. There is a Wi-fi address on my touch already. NEVER had probs before but even when I have the icon in the top left corner, I go to youtube or whatever, it says I can't connect yet the icon has full bars.
I've already done the reset etc.
    Suggestions?

Yes, I've already re-set my touch.
hmm..here's a question then, I've just logged into one where I think I know the password, it accepted it, hence the icon left window but I can't log on to the net.
THen, another wi-fi without a password, I logged into and can see the icon top left but i CAN get onto the net now.
Could someone explain the difference? Why did it add me in to the first one but not let me online when it accepted my password? and the other has no password and I can get online?
sorry folks, very new to this!

  • Can electrical surges go through the FIOS ONT Box

On Sept 8th something hit my Fios line and caused loss of equipment. There were no storms or electrical outages on Sept 8th. I was at my computer online when I got a message saying that my Ethernet was disconnected. Seconds later my system shut down. At first I had thought that I had a power failure but the lights never went out. Two computer systems that were on line are totally gone. On the third computer system the onboard Ethernet port is fried. My plasma TV HDMI port 1 is no longer useable. The cordless phones which I had just purchased two weeks ago are also fried. When this happened I lost the phone service, internet, and TV. I opened the ONT box and found that all the lights were out. I then plugged in a phone to check to see if I had a dial tone at the ONT. There was no power and no dial tone. I attempted to contact FIOS repairs using my cell phone. After being on hold for 3 1/2 hours I gave up. I called my daughter to login on line and chat with a Verizon tech. After an hour wait time she got through. The earliest available appointment to come to my home was for Sunday Sept 11th. Which meant that all my services would be down for 4 days. Yesterday, Sept 10th I noticed that some of the lights that were out on the router were back on. I tried the phones but they were still out. Then I tried the TV's. I managed to get 2 of three TV's working. The High Def TV would not come on. I disconnected the HDMI cable and attached a coaxial cable and the picture came on.Went out to the ONT box and most of the lights came back on. The internet light on the router was now lit but no activity on the Ethernet. I installed a wireless card on the machine that was still running and managed to get that online. All of my systems are plugged into surge arrestors. That includes the TV's, Router, computers and cordless phones. The Verizon tech had just left my home minutes ago. The Ethernet ports on the router were fried. The router was replaced. The DVR box that was connected to my Plasma was replaced due to the HDMI ports being fried. HDMI port 1 on my plasma was also no longer working. Switched over to HDMI port 2 and the picture came back on. Anything that was attached to the 2 computer systems were also fried. The 3rd system was offline when this had happened and the only thing that was effected was the Ethernet pot being fried. The tech said that no surge could come through the fiber optic network. If that statement is true then why were none of the surge suppressors tripped. And why would I suffer all this damage. It seems to me that the surge had come through and hit the FIOS box and anything that was connected was fried. Is this possible? I need some answers to explain just what caused this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no electrical connection between the Verizon Central Office and the ONT. It is strictly optical, so there is no conductor for the surge to travel down from the Central Office. So the ONT cannot be electrically damaged from the Optical end of the connection.
However the ONT could be damaged  from Coax or Ethernet end, or the ONT power supply could be 'fried' by a surge in the local power line. The Scenario is that if the surge voltage is high enough, it breaks the isolation normally provided by the power supplies in the equipment, and can propagate down the Coax and/or Ethernet cable and/or HDMI cable from either end. . In that case the ONT can effectively be 'fried' by having the surge propagate through the Coax or Ethernet (if you have Ethernet on the ONT instead of MoCA) to the ONT. It doesn't take a whole lot of energy to fry Coax or Ethernet ports on the devices.
The typical scenario is either some sort of accident drops a high tension line onto much lower voltage transmission line (this sometime happens when a vehicle collides with, and takes down a telephone pole, or large branch falls on a line). The other scenario is a direct lightning strike on the local distribution line. Either way, equipment that is supposed to see only 120VAC can in fact seen voltages in the thousand or tens of thousands of volts until the electric company's switching equipment either clear the fault, or shut down the line(s).. In either situation, considerable damage can be inflicted on just about anything electronic that was connected at the time. The energy delivered by a lightning bolt vastly exceeds the surge protection provided by any consumer surge protector.
From where you sit, whether it is the optical end that was damaged, or the ethernet/coax end of the ONT, the ONT will no longer provide service for you.
Also my experience with home use surge arresters is they cannot handle anywhere enough energy to be especially useful.
They also assume that the surge isn't 'common mode'. BTW, I am an Electrical Engineer with education in high voltage transmisson system and insulation.
