I think I need a new iMac : /

Hello, I have a 27in, late 2009 iMac ... that always ran Hot ... and now runs HOT with a nerve, grating JET ENGINE fan trying to cool it ... it's more and more prone to freezing up ... and the DVD drive just started fatally scratching disks ... as the doctor is wont to say ... "What do you expect ... you're OLD  : / "
Well my Volkswagen Passat is much older than my iMac and it's a GEM : )
... so am I on the bottom of Apple's obsolescence curve ... or is there some way to massage 'ol Lizzie to get her back in The Race ...
Thanks for your insights ...

  • I think I need a new Hard Drive

iMovie keeps crashing. Thus, I think I need a new hard drive for my 2001 dual 800 G4 (Quick Silver). Can someone please tell me the best place to buy a new hard drive, how to install it, and then how to transfer everything over to the new one and thus remove the old on.
Thanks so much to anyone that can be of assistance!
    Stuart

    Hi Stuart-
You can buy a good hard drive here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-IDE-ATA/
I would recommend the Seagate 120 gb hard drive. Your system is limited to up 128 gb, thus the recommendation.
You can follow the following guide to add your new hard drive:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/IDE/add2nddrive/
After you format the new drive, install your OS X Tiger on the new drive (I also recommend updating the OS X to 10.4.8)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
After you have finished installing the OS to the new hard drive, the OS should prompt you, asking if you would like to transfer files. Just follow the prompts, and you'll soon be done.
When the transfer is done, and you are satisfied that all is well, you may consider reformatting the old drive (losing all previous data) and using the newly formatted old drive for backup.

  • Thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?

We have a 2009 MBP, 2010 MBP, 2011 MBA, an IPAD 2, and several ipods.  Currently, my 2009 MBP is the main computer, holding all the music and pictures.  This has used up the majority of the available storage and definitely slows it down some.  I do back up the full computer to a backup drive and also remove the large movie files to another external drive.  I'm thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?
I look forward to all responses.
    Thanks,
    Brad

Thanks for your response.  I look forward to hopefully learning something new here.
A good share of my music was added via my CDs, but now everything is added via itunes and occasionally amazon.  Almost all my pictures and video are added through my cameras via iphoto although I have added some with the 'add image to iphoto library' function also.

  • Help Needed re: New iMac SSD and Apps

I have a new MTO 27" iMac with the SSD option and I want to maximize the performance of my Apps and OS by having them resident on the SSD and not much else. I don't know what folders and files other than the .app files I need to move from my old PPC to achieve this.  Please help as I am already a little confused about the content of the SSD vs the HDD.  After moderate reading, I'm thinking I just want the OS (Lion) and my Apps on the SSD but I am using the Target Drive process vs Migration assistant.  I already have moved my "out of the box" User home folder and its "Hidden" Library to my HDD on the new imac, but have NOT moved any of my old PPC Apps or other folders to the new iMac yet.
Should I put my User/Library/Applications Support Folder on my SSD if I mainly want my OS and Apps on the SSD? AND Can I just move/copy the folder to the new iMac using the Target Drive process from my old PPC?
I'm open to other ideas about what files s/b on SSD

I've seen a few Discussion Threads regarding these new iMac setups with the two internal drives (SSD + HDD). Some folks are advocating for keeping all Apps/OS files on the SSD exactly as you mention. Then they come up with a scheme for keeping their whole home folder on the HDD and it's seamlessly done so that the Mac doesn't complain that your home folder isn't in the default location.

This has some tips on how to keep your home folder on the larger HDD instead of on the SSD.

  • Thinking of buying a new imac, but....

    Hi peeps,
I've got a bit of a predicament on my hands. I've made a decision that I'm going to by a new imac because I need it for uni and stuff. But I start in September and need it before then for obvious reasons, the other problem is that Leopard is scheduled for October if I'm not mistaken.
A mate told me that I could buy an imac something like 3 months before hand and get the upgrade for leopard free? I just want to confirm that because that would solve it! The only problem with buying like that, they could postpone it more.
But anyways, can anybody confirm that?
    Cheers,
    Will.

    Will..first...Welcome to Apple Discussions..
No one here can answer that since we are all just end users without special knowledge of Apple's plans...
Besides it would be speculation and the 'Terms of Use' that we all had to agree to to post here would be violated

  • Downloaded old documents [performa running os 8 app. clairis 4{i think}] on to my new imac.

How do I read these old files on my new imac? They show up as  dark icon with green "exec" lettering.
    thanks

    Peter,
The universal file format is actually pdf.  Adobe, the company made a name for itself by inventing the PostScript page description language for laser printers.  Before that it was dot matrix printing with jagged edges.  Once Adobe figured out that their page description languge could be used for more than printers, they got to work on pdf.
Also, you can find older translation software but the best thing to do is to go back and use "Save As..."  The save as option will give more options.  If you are in ClarisWorks, the save as default is ClarisWorks.  Click on the down arrow at the end of the box that says ClarisWorks and it will provide a drop down list of options.  That is where you select the universal file formats mentioned above.
If you can find a Mac User Group in your area, you are sure to find some old timer who could not bear to part with their old computers.  They can also help with translators or older software titles.  The earliest title was Passport.  That was a beta test of Apple File Exchange.  The latest third party title escapes me for now but it will come to me later.
    Jim~
Just a note on "tab delimited text."  If you are in a spreadsheet, the tab key takes you from one column to the next, left to right.  Think of each tab or column as being a separate field like name, address, city, state, zip, phone number.  Each time you hit the return key it takes you to the next line.  Think of each return as a new record, or a new name, address, city, state and zip, etc..  Because that was the spreadsheet standard for organizing data, file transfers to databases adopted the same field separators or delimiters.  Sorry for the jargon.  :  )

  • Strange restart screen happening and advice needed on new imac purchase

Well first thing first, i just sold my imac 20" CD for a refurbished 24" iMac C2D directly from apple. The first thing i noticed is screen during the restart process that i have never seen on the multiple macs that i have owned. It looks like terminal/ms-dos with a black screen and lines of white text that indicate what is going on in the restart process. it doesnt really affect anything, i just don't really like it showing up, i would rather have the grey apple with spinning marks under it. Is this a setting somewhere that i don't know about?
And for the second thing. Because of this black screen that happens during start up i noticed.....a green stuck pixel... I am pretty picky about my things and when i noticed this i started freaking out a little bit. I know that stuck pixels are very common in LCD's i just didnt really want one in mine. I tried massaging it and all of the programs out there that are supposed to "un stick" it with no luck. I know apple is not likely to replace a unit for a single stuck pixel but i was going to try my hardest to get it replaced until......i looked in the system information and noticed that i somehow got the upgraded gforce 7600 256mb video card. So my question is should i stop complaining and take the $125 video card upgrade for free or try and get my unit replaced for my stuck pixel. BTW, the stuck pixel is only viewable on black/really dark screens and it is located in the middle display, about 2 inches right. Thanks in advance

A very tough question to answer. I am a little picky also and a stuck pixel would drive me up a wall. But have you tried to reinstall the system to see if it fixes the weird startup. Weighing the video card against the pixel I would have to go with seeing if apple could fix or repair the screen without switching the machine. If it is still under warranty they will try to no end to repair it before they just send you out another unit.
So I guess my answer is to make them repair the system thus saving you your video card.

  • I think i need a new machine

    hey guys,
my mate was using my ti powerbook today when the machine suddenly died.
it was plugged into power via my AC adapter, and network (since i can't afford wireless on an 8 yr old machine)
the weird thing about it though was that the machine wouldn't turn back on and the standby indicator light was flashing erratically.
never seen this problem before, so i thought i should ask some much wiser counsel!
    Thanks.

Did you ever get the TiBook fixed? I think I have a similar problem.

  • Do You Think I Need A New Printer?

I've got an Epson Stylus 740 which dates back to oh, '98/99. All of a sudden, it won't print B+W even after cleaning the print head and replacing the cartridge. I also noticed I can't access any of the Print Utilities, likely because the included CD only supports the Classic environment and there's no on-line print drivers/software for OS X.
Am I missing something or should I replace this printer?

Whether or not to replace the good ol' Epson Stylus Color 740 is your call, but mine continues to work perfectly to this day, from OS 8.6 all the way to Leopard 10.5.8! (No, not all on the same Mac, but it is still the original printer!)
But I don't use Epson's driver. Instead I use the open-source Gutenprint driver:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
(Click on Supported Printers to find ours)
    which gives many more options.

  • HT4528 Seriously? You guys are a multi BILLION dollar Co & dont have REAL customer service??? Dammit I think I need a new carrier... I accidentally deleted a VERY important note in my phone just now & I need to know if there is ANY way I can retrieve it.

I would just like to know if I can retrieve a Note (in the notes app on the phone-Iphone 5) that I accidentally erased. Is this possibe please??

We are not Apple here. This is a user to user support forum.
If you deleted the Note, then it is deleted unless you have a backup of your device with that note on it in either iCloud or iTunes.
    Sorry,

  • My iPod won't charge... Or hold a charge I've tried 4 cords... It often freezes. But I think I need a new battery and the part in the bottom that the charger plugs into...

It is explained in the title

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable
    - Try another charging source
    - Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, cracked or broken plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

  • I'm thinking of  buying one of the new Imacs and am presently a PC user - how hard is it or how can I transfer files from my PC to a new IMac

I am thinking about purchasing a new IMac and presently use a PC.  I would like to find out how difficult it is to transfer files from the PC to the IMac or in more detail - just how is it done.  Many thanks for any responses.

There are several ways by which it can be done. There is a special Migration Assistant for transferring an entire user account from a PC to the Mac. You would have to establish a network connection between the two machines.
Transfer the files you want to an external USB hard drive from the PC then transfer from the external drive to the Mac.
Ask the Apple retailer if they will transfer your data to the new Mac at the time of purchase. You will need to bring the PC with you.
