I think it crashed!

When I start up my mac it gives me the gray screen with the apple but not spinning dial to show it's running, and so I inserted the disk it came with and ran the disk utilities and for the repairing disk permissions i get this error message:
DISK UTILITY HAS LOST CONNECTION WITH DISK MANAGEMENT TOOL AND CANNOT CONTINUE. PLEASE QUIT AND RELAUNCH DISK UTILITY.
I exited it and have tried a total of 20 times now with nothing, can anyone help me? Also this happened AFTER i was finished with a system update, I think it was 10.4.11

Hi cryingwolf, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Did you try to Repair the Disk before trying to Repair Permissions?
To try without the Tiger Disk, try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

o The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • How do I stop Firefox from thinking it crashed and doing a recovery when forced to use Windows Task manager to close a bad URL that I never want to go back to?

Long question, I know :~) There are web sites that I may visit that will not allow me to exit the site, so I use Alt-Ctrl-Del in Windows to start the Task Manager and force the site to close by ending the program. The new version of Firefox (31.0) thinks that Firefox crashed and send me right back to the source of my problem.
Your documentation for this process is as follows:
    After a crash
Due to unexpected issues such as problems with a website, software errors, or an accidental loss of power, Firefox may unexpectedly close. In these situations, Firefox can restore the pages that you were visiting when it is restarted. Firefox will automatically restore your previous session, the first time you launch it after a crash.
If Firefox crashes a second time, the Restore Session (i.e. "Well, this is embarrassing") page will appear when you next launch Firefox.
...and this is what I found trying to stop this process. Next, when I am forced to use Task Manager to close Firefox a second time to stop a badware site, then the 'Well this is embarrassing' dialog appears and I am finally safely away from the URL.
I do not want Firefox automatically sending me back to a problem site.
Thank you for any procedure you can suggest to stop Firefox from restoring problem web pages, Art Clapton

I am unwilling to attempt navigation away from these sites. The pop-ups that occur on the attempt to leave a site or to close the browser are exit traps offering incentive to stay.
Once upon a time, when the internet was less dangerous, I would be willing to close the exit pop-ups. Now, after twice being infected with malware trying to close the pop-ups, I now force close whichever browser I am using.
Recently, I clicked on the red X to close one pop-up, and it installed a trojan that I had to pay to be removed. When I clicked on 'Leave' in another exit pop, it didn't exit and it turned out I was giving permission to run a script file. Now that criminals have learned these exit pop-ups can be used to force a click action, the sites using them have become dangerous.
If I force the browser to close using Task manager, Please tell me how to stop FireFox from sending me directly back to the same site because it mistakenly believes it crashed when it did not. I forced it to close because I was on a site that had taken control of my browser and was not allowing me to leave the site.
No other browser sends me back to the potentially dangerous sites. I prefer Firefox, but the new version must have a setting that allows me to get safely away from a problem site?

  • I think I crashed my eMac

Basically I think that I crashed my emac. I downloaded a new upgrade torrent for my eMac and tried to install through an external drive. Some how I erased my Macintosh drive. My issue now is that I cannot even start my computer up. When I bought the computer it came with one disc and this is not the disc to install mac os x back onto the computer, its techtools. I tried to install the torrents from another computer and download them onto disc. I then tried to insert the disc into the eMac and install the mac os x software. The computer did not read the disc so that was a total failure. I also tried to use command+s to find a solution, nothing. I also tried to reset my pram and that was a failure. I also tried command, option, f+o and I couldn't find anything. Is there some kind of way to restore files onto the computer through these channels. I need your help guys, give me some helpful hints to get my computer back up and running, thank you...

Do you have access to a second Mac, maybe from a friend?
It sounds to me that you at least need to salvage your files using target disk mode through another Mac. I once had this problem on a friend's iMac, he did something wrong to his OS and wasn't sure exactly what (he was a new user at the time), his iMac was unresponsive, and an archive & install wasn't a viable option, so I connected his iMac with my old crate eMac via firewire and upon logging on to my Mac I could see his HDD as an external firewire disk that was fully accessible. I then proceeded to copy all his important files to my machine and installed Mac OS X all over again clean slate (not archiving and installing) to rectify the problem. Definitely as stated before you need to get the Mac OS X installation DVD to begin with, it's a must.

  • After the update before last (6.0.1 I think) Firefox crashed on resart and failed to send in the error report; I've had to roll back to V4 to use Firefox - any clues?

The update to 6.0, 6.0.1 or 6.0.2 will not run on my system. Th einstall goes ok, the restart starts, throws up a bunch of Java incompatabilities then crashes with the apology screen offering to send in a report if I hit restart or quit. No matter how many times I hit restart, the report submission fails and Firefox stays crashed. Looking at my crash reports, the problem seems to start on or around August 18th 2011 - the crash ID below is the last generated (not found at your end obviously, as it never reached you)

    Thanks for the suggestion;
Complete uninstall (Bookmarks saved to X-Marks), re-install, same problem (minus the imcompatible Jave bits & bobs, 'cos they weren't there to be objected to).
So I'm back to V4 (might try hunting down a newer (pre V6) version)

  • Help! I think I crashed an external drive!

I have a SeaGate external drive (80gb) and I was using it on a Mac OS X iBook laptop after my Windows hard drive crashed. So I accidentally forgot to "safely" remove the drive before I unplugged it - because I'm so used to PC's where you don't have mess with such stupid nonsense.
Ever since then, I can no longer access any files on the drive. When I plug it into a Mac, it doesn't even notice it. When I plug it into my new MS Vista desktop computer that I just bought last night, it wants me to format the disk. But of course, if I format it, I lose everything, and that is BAD!
Is there anyway to go in and change some setting somewhere to allow the disk to open again without formatting it?
Please tell me there's a simple fix here!

Open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the Repair Disk command on that drive. If the Disk Utility doesn't succeed, software such as DiskWarrior might.

  • I think I crashed my Finder - Menu bar won't display, Finder windows either

    Help!
I attached a new external HD yesterday (a Western Digital MyBook) to use as the Time Machine disk. Started a brand new backup and went out. When I got back to the house, about 14 of 250 GB had backed up but the system had hung -- no amount of key presses got anything working -- it was just hung, stuck, dead. Against my better judgment I switched off the power strip everything is plugged into and re-booted.
System came back up, but when I click the Finder or Trash icons in the dock, nothing happens. I've also got no menu bar, unless an app is running -- then I have that app's menus but not the finder ones. Also, icons for internal HD, both external HDs, MobileMe disk, etc -- don't display on the desktop and there's no way to get at them, it appears.
Is there some sort of bootup routine I can try or do I need to re-install Leopard? The Time Machine backup started over and seems to be progressing normally. If I let this finish, will I be able to restore my system that way?
    Thanks everyone...
    -- Scott

And, I just answered my own question. I repaired the disk permissions (for my internal HD) with Disk Utility and now everything is back to normal. I wiped the External HD and started the Time Machine backup again and so far, so good...
    Should anyone find this useful...

  • Ipod touch upgrade...I think it crashed my system

Last night I purchased the new upgrade 2.o
Today, my itunes displayed an error message, device could not be recognized, or something to that effect.
Since, my ipod touch is stuck with an apple symbol and a rotating circle down by the "home button" It will not turn on It will not turn off It will not charge It will not leave this screen and I do not know what to do.
Does anyone know any way to "wake up" my ipod?

  • Finder crashes with OS 10.6.8. With or without any apps running finder will hang repeatedly causing the iMac to hang also. I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 recently and finder was OK for 1 week. How do I submit a crash log?

Folllowing an upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8  (Snow Leopard) Finder frequently hangs, causing any open apps and the iMac to hang. This will occur whether or not any 3rd party apps or Safari are open. About 50% of the time trying to empty the trash will cause a finder hang. There are no error messages to let me know what code such a hang may be. Repeated attempts to force quit the iMac always fail, so I have to hard crash using the power button. Multiple attempts are required to successfully restart via the login screen. I do not know whether any other apps, such as Safari or screen saver may be involved. I think a crash log would help, however I am not sure whether I should look in: useres/library/logs/DaiagnosticReports or : users/library/logs/CrashReporter, and whether I should attempt to open the latest in either in Console or Text edit and then post here. Also, is this the appropriate site to post a log in the hope that Apple may look at it? I have read through threads on Apple finder, and am stunned to find that after all these OS-X versions finder is still buggy and inferior to MS Explorer and Apple appears to be in denial. Maybe their efforts are in devices such as iPhones and iPads? Ths issue never occured in OS 10.5.8.

  • Multiple Crashes, Gray Thumbnails

Wow, am I having problems with version 7.01. first, could not import a simple I movie hd project of less than five mins of movie. Second, crashed at least ten times will importing movie files from my hard drive. third, would crash while generating thumbnails and the final third of my clips were in gray, no thumbnail at all. This software sure seems to be very buggy to me! I am running this on a macbook, and just simple video clilps from my digital camera. I could not run a voiceover with any precision, and all I wanted to do was post a short clip up to my web gallery..
    feed back appreciated.
    Paul
ps. wonder if I would have better luck using a real minidv cam.

I am not sure why it crashed in the first place. I remember I tried to import some video clips. When I switched between the projects and doing other things, I think iMovie crashed. Then, when I returned to the application, most of the previously imported clips turned gray. iMovie tried to re-create those thumbnails without any success. Finally, it crashed again - over and over again. The movie clips themselves were fine when I viewed the original .dv clips in their folders. I think the thumbnails were corrupted and iMovie went into an endless loop and decided to crash. This is a major bug in the software and it has happened to be rather frequently. I think I have the solution but hopefully Apple will fix that in future updates.

  • Acrobat 7.0.9 Crashes after 5 sec.

I tried re installing the program 7.0 and updating to 7.0.9 all versions crash after 5 seconds. I tried deleting preferences but I'm not sure I got all the acrobat preferences Can someone chime in as to what might be the issue. I'm running panther osx 10.3.9. Trouble started when Safari stopped working. I re installed Safari as well and could not get it to run. Safari is no big because I use Firefox.

In addition I think this crash has something to do with having installed Safari for Tiger onto a Panther machine. Does anyone know what components the Tiger version of Safari would have installed to cause Acrobat to crash? How do I recover from this?

Backup your files. Erase the drive and reinstall the OS. If that doesn't fix it, then it's probably a hardware issue.

  • ITunes 7.7 64-bit installer crashes, won't install

I downloaded the 64-bit installer and tried to install over my 7.6 install. Part way through the installer (on the Quicktime bit I think) it crashes. I tried multiple times.
So I completely uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime and tried again. Now the iTunes installer crashes immediately rather than part way through the install (it's right after the pick install location / desktop icons screen).
Any ideas? I'm left with no iTunes whatsoever now which isn't very helpful when I need to sync my iPod.

    Hey Viper007Bond,
Try completely removing iTunes and QuickTime as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
Then download and reinstall the latest version of iTunes.
