I think it's dead

My G5 iMac has been acting quite strangely for the last few weeks. It's been randomly shutting off and restarting, but never when it's in use. Today, when I went to sign on, the power light was flashing quickly and there was a steady beeping noise along with it. I was unable to turn the computer on.
Any thoughts as to what might be causing this? I ran some diagnostics a couple of weeks ago and everything seemed to be OK. Help. Thanks.

It might be your RAM, have you added any lately? Try switching the sticks around to see if that helps. Also, make sure your vents are free of dust.
Reset the PMU:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
and then reset the PRAM.
Let us know how you make out.

  • Resetting a PB 17" 1GHz Battery that "thinks" it's dead?

I have a PB 17" 1GHz that just turned 3 years old. I have 2 batteries that I purchased with the CPU, and have rotated them through it's life. Neither of the batteries have gone more than about 3 months dormant (with a full charge), but recently, one of them has gone dead. Both batteries have under 40 charge cycles.
The bad battery now shows 0% or sometimes the PB shows that there's no battery at all. cocnutBattery sometimes reports that it has good capacity, but 1 or -1 mAh of charge. When installed, my power cord goes amber for about 20 secs, then back to green, and it won't charge.
Here's the odd thing - a few weeks ago, by putting the battery in and out several times, I was able to get it to charge. I gave it a full charge, then was able to use the PB for a good 2+ hours, almost as if it was in perfect shape, just a little short on time.
So, I did a battery condition as recommended by Apple, by letting it fully discharge (to sleep) overnight. The next morning, it had totally shut down, even though Apple says these batteries can stay in sleep for something like a month after fully discharged. At this point, the battery stopped taking a charge.
I've tried everything... reset the PMU... reset the nvram, popping the batt in and out, etc. For a while, cocnutBattery would show the charge cycles and other info, but now it shows 0 and the capacity and charge is -1 and 1. The PB menu shows that it's charging and at 0% (contantly), but the power cord is green - won't actually stay in a charging state.
Now, because the battery did take a charge recently, unless the Apple-recommended battery condition actually killed it, I know this battery is potentially functional. It seems like it's just locked into a logic state of "dead" and needs to be reset somehow.
I've scoured the new and the boards and can't find any tricks to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's just my luck that I'm now 1 month past my 3-year APP plan, but with such a low cycle count on this battery and the fact that it died after running Apple's recondition procedure, if I can't reset it, I'm going to see if they can help.
    Thanks,
    -Mark

First, try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and homebutton for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting.
If this does not work, try to set it up as new device:

  • Oh crap, I think it's dead...

To lead off... Yes, I've checked the official support pages, and some unofficial ones. I have an e-mail outstanding to Apple support. There isn't an apple store close enough to go to. I just want to probe the minds of you fine people.
I think my iPod gave up the ghost.
I tried playing something today like normal and nothing would play. All my podcasts, videos, and songs were still listed, but there was no album art and nothing got beyond 0 seconds. It clicked and whirred like mad when trying to play things. Very loud.
I looked up some help and saw it could be rebooted. So I did that by pushing menu and the middle button. It rebooted.... Big red X. I tried to get into disk mode w/ middle button and Play like 30 or 40 times, VERY CAREFULLY, and it never worked. I can't get into it.
If I plug it into the PC, it isn't recognized anymore. Nothing. There isn't an error or anything, it just doesn't see anything there. I can't even get back into the software and at least see the 0 second songs there. I can't get passed the red X.
So... am I boned or is there something else I can do here? This is a 120 GB iPod Classic.

Yeah, I did. They're gonna take it and fix it. I was just hoping there may be an easier solution than that. Like I read a lot of pre-6G iPods can have problems fixed in odd ways, but oh well. Thanks. I'll mark this as resolved.

  • IPhone 4s Battery thinks it's dead when it isn't

I've had my iPhone 4s for almost a year and it's been great. Today it has shut off on me twice and told me that the battery was dead. When I plugged it in to charge it both times it turned back on right away and said it still had more than 3/4 of the battery left. The last time I updated it was whenever the iOs 6.01 came out, I believe a month or two ago and I had no problems then. Last week it could go 2 or 3 days before dying on me and then all of a sudden today it's freaking out. Anybody else had this happen or know how to make it stop happening?

  • I think I have dead pixels.

I recently got an iPhone 5, and then my dad said I should put a screen cover on it. So he gave me a Duracell screen protector. Then one day I looked closely on the lock screen under the date and I saw this rainbow type mark. It was rainbow and it was really annoying when I used my iPhone. My friend told me it was a dead pixel. I looked up ways to fix it and I played these videos on YouTube that are supposed to recalibrate, or revive, the dead pixel. It never worked.
    What should I do?

Take off the screen protector and clean the screen with a soft cloth. See what the screen looks like then.

  • No go and no more blue lights on SB1300 (I think it's dead)

My SB1300 (Recon 3d) is only two weeks old and today when I went to use it were no blue lights on the SB1300 unit. I have tried plugging it into different USB ports and a different PC but no lights and no go.
    Is it dead?
Any suggestions before I take it back?

    Hello Zambotti,
Check if your SB1300 gets detected by the PC even if the blue light is not showing up (you can loook this up from the device manager). If yes, you may need to re-install the firmware. Click on the Support link found on top on this page and select Sound Blaster->Sound Blaster Recon3D. Download the latest firmware under "Firmware" section. Just follow the onscreen instructions.
If no blue light and at the same time not detected, I suggest you get in touch with customer support and have it RMA'ed.

  • I think my PB G4 is dead, what can I do with hard drive?

I'm convinced my Powerbook G4 17" 1.5GHz OS 10.4 (let's call him "Mr. Dead") has died...maybe you can verify my diagnosis near the bottom.  Since I think he's dead, but I think the hard drive might be fine, I'd like advice on what I can do with the hard drive (for recovering data & looking at how I had the old system setup).
RESOURCES:  I have a new Macbook Pro on order ("MBP"), and access to 2 Powerbook G4 17" 1.67GHz, one running 10.4, the other 10.5.  The G4 10.4 is an sometimes-used system (let's call him "Useful"), and the G4 10.5 is one that's freshly-installed but no one is using currently (let's call him "Idle").
I thought of 2 basic options here.  Bear in mind I'm not a hardware guy.  I've installed RAM, that's it.  Though I expect I can manage to follow online instructions on how to pull a hard drive from a Powerbook.  My main worry is buying the wrong thing, which I think would be easy to do, since I don't know much about hardware tinkering.
SOLUTION 1) Put Dead's hard drive into a Firewire enclosure, then he can at least be a data drive to pull stuff off of.  Would I also be able to boot off of his install?  What do I need to know to buy the right enclosure?  Does anyone recommend any?
SOLUTION 2)  Put Dead's hard drive into one of the other Powerbooks, perhaps only temporarily.  Then I can boot it, look at it, put that Powerbook into Firewire Target Disk Mode, etc.  Will that work?  Is it hard?  Are there any issues with the dissimilarities between Dead and the other Powerbooks (the other 2 are faster chips, and one is already at 10.5)?
Are there pros/cons to solution 1 vs 2?
DIAGNOSIS:  Why I think Dead has died:
He's been acting weird the past 2 days or so, freezing, requiring hard shutdowns.  Then Monday, he wouldn't boot...what I could most often get out of it, after resetting the PMU, is to get the POST to give me 3 beeps (bad RAM).  But I've tried the RAM modules from Dead in the other Powerbooks, and the RAM is fine.
Every once in a while it ALMOST acts like it wants to boot...I get a chime, or a chime with a burst of static, but even then, the hard drive then quiets down, the screen stays black, it goes silent, and the system remains dormant.

My recollection is the bad memory slot issue only affected the 1.5 and 1.67ghz PowerBooks with 15-inch displays. However, BGreg's suggestion of RAM swapping should reveal if it somehow affected a few 17s.
Every once in a while it ALMOST acts like it wants to boot...I get a chime, or a chime with a burst of static, but even then, the hard drive then quiets down, the screen stays black, it goes silent, and the system remains dormant.
That does sound like a dead hard drive but my 17-inch 1Ghz has, like almost every other PowerBook, a dead PRAM battery and they are nearly impossible to find other than as "used/pulled." Sounds like buying used chewing gum to me!
If I let the main battery (which is an original Apple replacement and still good) run down the computer will not start from the A/C adaptor alone. If I hit the start button when the main battery is flat, I get similar noises that you describe but it goes nowhere. If I walk away, leaving the charger plugged in, the computer will boot 5-10 minutes later.
So if your are living with a dead main battery and we accept that nearly every PowerBook has a defunct backup (PRAM) battery, you won;t get far without replacing the battery. Apple no longer sells PB batteries so that throws you into the third-party pool where not all batteries are created equal.
If you want to get an new main battery, I'd try these guys first as they are an established Mac equipment vendor with excellent customer service:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple_laptop/batteries/PowerBook_G4_17
Pricey for a pre-2006 machine that may have a dead hard drive.
One old trick is to turn off the computer, remove the main battery and leave the PB on the A/C unit for 24-48 hours, then reinstall the main battery and try booting. The theory: the backup battery is rechargeable and there is the off-chance that it will get "pumped up" enough during that it will help with the next boot. It's a good step in that the only cost to you is 24-48 hours of time.

  • Is my mini really dead and what will I get back if serviced?

Hi, I was wondering if I send in my 6GB mini iPod for servicing (I think it's dead), what will Apple replace it with?
Yesterday I was listening to my iPod and then it randomly stopped. My iPod freezes a lot so I thought it wasn't anything major, but this time I couldn't reset it. The iPod won't respond when I hook it up to the computer (the computer doesn't even recognize it) or when I'm charging it through an AC adapter. Is there anything else I can do?
I bought the iPod in April and since early June it's been acting up(freezing constantly). I did not buy the warranty and I am aware about the battery/ servicing fee. Since Apple no longer manufactures mini iPods, if I do get it serviced what will they send back?
Thanks for the help in advance!

"I was wondering if I send in my 6GB mini iPod for servicing (I think it's dead), what will Apple replace it with?"
Another iPod mini. Apple has a stock of minis for just such an eventuallity.
Have you tried the trouble shooting steps listed here?
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
"I did not buy the warranty"
The iPod comes with a 12 month warranty, and after 180 days has expired, all you pay is a handling charge.

  • 3 Day Old Macbook Pro. Dead pixel.

I just got a MBP and it has a dead pixel near the bottom and bit off center to the left. I´ve tried just about every thing to fix it, but nothing.
I called the place we bought it, and the stupid Apple policy can only replace it if it has 5 or more dead pixels. There is literally nothing I can do? It´s the most annoying thing ever. I shouldn`t have to pay thousands of dollars to have a fault screen, even if it is just one single pixel.

hard to say, it depends on the product and how much it cost.
If this happened to me again, and was a less expensive computer, I likely wouldn't care as much. It'd still bug the heck outta me, but I'd be able to learn to deal with it.
For what macs cost, I don't have any qualms or any guilt about expecting things to be pretty much perfect. I understand there will be things slightly wrong here and there due to mass production, but when its something glaringly obvious like a stuck/dead pixel, that's where I draw the line.
And besides, there is no publicly stated rule that says it has to be 5 dead/stuck pixels before a replacement/refund. I know Apple has that knowledge base article on stuck/dead pixels, but last I checked, it didn't stipulate any rules when trying to exchange/return a computer for dead pixels.
I can't say I agree with your statement about how few LCDs are perfect. Out of the entire time I've purchased electronics, I've only encountered just 2 instances of a stuck pixel. Perhaps I've just been lucky, I don't know, but I'm seriously not kidding.
Lastly at this point, it seems absurd to still think that stuck/dead pixels are acceptable due to cost. While this might have been the case a few years ago, if cost is the big reason as to why we're supposed to accept dead/stuck pixels, how is it possible that companies like Dell can offer a guarantee on no stuck/dead pixels for their LCDs?

  • HT4044 Dead pixel on iPad 4

I bought an iPad 4 a few days ago, and it has what I think is a dead pixel (a permanent dark grey dot).  Is there anything I can do about this?

If that bothers you, go to the Apple Store and let the genius know about it. Maybe they will replace your iPad. Make a backup and an appointment before you go.

  • Dead Pixels/Dark spot?

I was just working on some homework on my macbook pro and all the sudden I noticed this dark spot/dead pixel in the right center of my screen. At first I thought my screen just got dirty, but that was not the case. Can anyone tell me what this is... and if apple will cover this?

****... well here is the weird thing... there hasn't been any sort of blunt force or anything even close to that, that happened to my laptop. I make sure that if I ever take it out that it is gentally set down. I have the laptop sleeve as well as a laptop bag.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe when I sent my Macbook Pro into Apple to get the logic board replaced that somehow some sort of pressure was applied to the screen to cause this. Would the problem that I'm having appear several days/weeks/months after the actual day when some sort of pressure is applied to the screen? I think this whole dead pixel or whatever it is happened sometime within the past 3-4 days in which my laptop has been sitting here on my desk with nothing stacked on top of it.

  • Totally dead Jukebox Ze

Hi all, at first excuse me for my bad english.
Im going to explain a big big problem with my jukebox zen, i think its totally dead...
I was going to listen my Zen, and my surprise was that it doesnt turn on, its like no battery, i connected it to the ac adaptor and it occurs the same thing. Then, i tried to acces to the rescue mode, but it doesnt work too, the zen its totally dead. Later i discovered that if i connect to the ac adaptor and i put a clip into the reset button, a screen with "CREATIVE, copyright 2002" appears, but if i release the reset button, that screen disappears (only works if its connected to the ac adaptor) and its imposible to access to the rescue mode.
My pc doesnt detect anything, its like the jukebox were a brick connected to the pc via usb. Can anyone help me ? A battery problem ?
Please, im totally **cked, please help.
    Thanks.

<SPAN>No, I just bought another player. I like it a LOT so far.
<SPAN>The sleek seems nice except for some bad interface decisions like not having a fast way to turn shuffle on/off. You cannot even create a play list with that option either. A playlist with the shuffle mode would be great.
<SPAN>I could li've with the menu way to turn it on/off if they would have put the play mode at the bottom of the menu but no, they put volume last on the menu list! We do not need a volume selection on the menu at all since it has its own slider for it!!!!
<SPAN>Now if I want to change play modes I have to scroll all the way down, THEN up one selection to select it. This is hard when you are in a car etc... People that design these things really have no brain sometimes

  • My Z10 is dead.

Hello, I was looking at my browser today and my screen slowly went black. The battery was well charged. Now as I got home I plugged it into my charger (thinking it was dead battery) nothing.
I have not had the phone a year, I pulled the battery and kept the charger in, getting the red light for a brief moment. What gives?
I hold down the power button and I still get nothing but black screen.

Nothing? I am not at all impressed with my first Blackberry experience.

  • L305D-S5934 seems dead

L305D-S5934 would not restart after hibernation. Everything operated normally and the machine entered hibernation normally when closing the lid.
I tried restart with wall power. The only signs of life are a brief flicker of the display and a quick check of the CD/DVD. The computer never tries to access the hard drive and the hard drive light never lights up. I removed and read the hard drive successfully on another machine.
Thinking it is dead because of a corrupted BIOS, I retrieved slc8v150.exe, found the slc8v150.iso and created a CD image of the file.
I tried to restart the machine and it read the CD, but it's still not responding.
Am I on the right track? Am I using the correct BIOS file? or is the motherboard out? Thanks!

Sounds like the computer is only semi-dead if it is trying to read the CD drive.
First, try to simplify the problem. Disconnect the power cable and remove the main battery. Disconnect everything attached to the computer including any printers, keyboards, mice, monitors, etc. Reattach the power cable to the computer. The power plug LED should light up. With the battery removed from the computer, the battery LED should be off. Turn the computer on. Any boot or video? Does the On LED light up? Even if the hard drive does not boot, you should still see some text about it trying to boot from the CD drive or the LAN port. Maybe you have a video issue. Does the fan come on? Can you hear the hard drive spin up? What if you attached a monitor to the computer prior to turning on the computer? Will you get external video? Finally, there may be some problem with the Hibernation utility. What happens if you try Sleep mode instead?
