I think it's going to die... :(

Hi people!
I think my iBook is going to die. It's a G4, with 6xx ram and a 60g h/d.
I left the computer on today recording a tape from my tape deck using Final Vinyl. It done that fine. I came back and it had gone to screen saver. Woke it from screen saver, and it's been playing hard to get ever since.
I couldn't get it to boot up after it had frozen, i followed the Troubleshooting guides in the handbook and everything. I even had to 'firewire' it to my Bro's eMac-even then it had trouble reading the computer. I had to quit out of it.
When i started it up again though, it all came back on as if nothing had happened. So i went into Disk Utility, asked it to check permissions and it froze again. Shut it down, booted up (eventually) and it was all fine again. So instead of checking permissions, i went straight to repair permissions. It worked, the computer now boots up fine, first go (touchwood). When i was trying to start the Mac up from the install disc earlier, i went into Disk Utility and it didn't even find the HD.... :/
However, my main concern is this. Even a slight lift of the laptop and you can hear the HD spinning/reading/whatever it does. It's a noticeable but quiet noise, even now i'm sitting here typing away. It never done this before-it only started to do this after i woke it from the screensaver earlier. It's not a good noise, it sounds like its knackered-i've never heard a knackered hard drive before, but i'd presume it to sound something like it's doing now-just a constant 'whirring' noise.
I can't afford a new Mac-i want to keep this one. Does it sound like a knackered drive or would a simple HD erase and re-install cure it? Possibly mis-aligned needle or something maybe? Can it do that? If it does need replacing, is it an expensive job, or could i buy the HD and do it myself? I don't want to pull anything apart. It did have to go back to Apple with an HD issue about 5 months after i got it, but that was a good 4 years ago now...
If somebody out there does know the answer or has experienced similar, please give me a shout-i need a solution!
I have an external HD which i've backed up all my stuff onto, so erasing isn't a problem!
Please please please please somebody help...:(

Hi Dan
If your hard drive is indeed dying (and 4 years is not a bad lifespan), then there's nothing you can do to repair it. Replacement is the only option.
Replacing a hard drive on an iBook is not a simple task, and will require quite a bit of disassembly, so I would advise you to get some quotes from local technicians. You can certainly buy the drive yourself, if you want to shop around - you'll find plenty of recommendations on these forums for replacement drives that work well. Expect to pay for 1-3 hours of technician time. If you're happy to reinstall the system yourself, that will save you some money.

  • Is Java going to DIE?!

windows XP is coming. no JVM.
does that mean that a simple user would not be able to run a Java application on his PC?
end of Java for PC application?
what is a solution for that?
should we go and look for another job?

That Microsoft isn't going to put a JVM in Windows XP, does not mean that you cannot install the JDK or JRE on Windows XP. So there's no reason to think that Java is going to die. Anyway, nowadays only very few people are writing applets, and Java works mainly on the server (J2EE), which most of the time does not have a Microsoft operating system installed.
Don't go looking for another job, there will be plenty of work in the Java field for the coming years.

Or, what is the best way to handle this?

I do not know what you are waiting for.
I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

The colour of your iPhone is insignificant. Can you explain what you mean by "my Apple iphone 4 died it been and hour already been charged it all night", which makes no sense at all? If English is not your native language, you are free to post in your own language.

I always use caps lock key and it's so annoying (I write very fast) ! I'm fed up ! I received a MBA 13" yesterday, but I think I'm going to come back to Windows because of that !
So is there a solution to remove this annoying feature ?
    Thank you very much

Yes, this is really a deal breaker for me as you say ... I'm forced to write three times slower than I did on Windows 8, that's horrible (I used to type about 110 words/min).
I'm going to return my Mac and I think I'm going to buy an Asus laptop instead ...
What a shame that Apple does not do anything for this to be configured, I have read other forums and I see that I'm not the only one complaining about that ...
How to lose customers so stupidly ...
But thank you for your reply.

  • I think my hard drive is dying?

My daughter's ibook G-4 seems to be dying. Although she's had it for almost 5 years (yes, really), it's recently started to lock up or go blank even when she's using it or even if she moves it a little. She has to restart constantly - every few minutes. Can anyone help?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
After 5 years, the hard drive could well be dying, as they have an average useful life span of 3-5 years.
Unfortunately, it could also be having logic board problems.
Do you have the original discs? If so, a good place to start troubleshooting is with the Apple Hardware Test, which will be on one of the original discs. Run the extended version, and repeat back how it goes. In particular, notice if it seems to run normally when booted from the disc, or if it has the same problems as when booted from the hard drive. If you get any error codes, post back with them.
    Good luck!

  • I think I'm going MAD--Is it ok to record on Internal hard drive?

    Ok,
For the past 5 days I have been trying to solve a variety of problems related to my external hard drives and I think I'm starting to loose my mind.
Basically, I have an external hard drive I use for recording that goes to sleep every 10 minutes and there is no way to stop this. When this drive awakes when I begin to record, it shoots this horrible noise through my system speakers and guitar amplifiers. I've tried numerous things to end this noise batttle, but I wont bore you with the details.
    HERE IS MY QUESTION:
Is there any problem with recording directly onto my computer's (MacBook Pro) hard drive? I was always under the impression that audio shuld be recorded (usually via firewire) onto an external drive. My plan is to keep main songs I'm working with on my actual computer, record on the internal drive, and then backup everything up later onto my noisy external drive. Does this sound good? Will there be any new problems I might encounter with this method, or is there any reason I should NOT do it this way? Please let me know as it might end my problems.
    Thanks for the help.

Let me add my voice of "dissent" to recording on internal system drives.
Once you start...then you kee going, and then, eventually the drive WILL FAIL.
Most internal systems drives need to be used for the applications, and the OS.Why? because they need the drive for "random-read-write-access"...they need to access this drive an random moment,s and when you are using the drive to record linear audio files...the system will get bogged down.
The fragmantation occurs precisely when the random read-write-access is occurring.Normally the OS takes care of the maintenance task of keeping this from happening too often.but when you are using the drive to read-write large data files (audio) the system cannot keep up as before.
See,it's simple, really. And that is why most mfrs of D.A.W software reccomend an external hard drive for recording.
    Cheers

  • Is my GTX 560Ti OC going to die?

    Hello,
I just installed a brand new N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II/OC card and it's been running fine, however I quickly noticed this:
    http://i.imgur.com/hQJQy.jpg
Notice that this happens on both the windows desktop and also on the monitor's OSD menu.
It seems to be triggered by any intense white on the screen (like the Google homepage) and runs horizontally. What you don't see in the above photo is Firefox open off to the side displaying a pure white page. It seems to turn any black part of the screen a streaky, red pixel pattern. All other colors are crisp and accurate.  If I minimize everything and go back to the black desktop, the effect disappears.
This was not happening with my previous graphics card, a GeForce GTS 250. I have not been experiencing any other problems: no freezes, crashes, lockups, artifacts, or slowdowns in anything else.
    Here are my system specs:
    CPU: Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67
    Motherboard: MSI P55-GD65
PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W (output table)
    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
    OS: Windows 7 Pro SP1 (64-bit)
    GPU Drivers: ForceWare 275.33 / Win7 64
Monitor: HP LP2475w 24-inch Widescreen LCD
    Other considerations:
GPU is at 38C and CPU between 36-38C while idle.  This distortion happens while the computer is idle or under load. Here's a snapshot of Speedfan.
Is this symptomatic of not enough power on the +12V rail? My PSU has 2 +12v rails at 25A each. I'm concerned, as the recommendation is 30A, but I haven't experienced any lockups or crashes.
I've tried different DVI ports, but not yet on HDMI. I did try on a smaller 17" monitor and the effect goes away.
I have been playing The Witcher 2 on ultra (no ubersampling) for several hours and it runs flawlessly
Other than that everything runs and looks good right now, but I am concerned that this is a sign that things will only get worse. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

I changed the power supply to a Seasonic X650 and so far it seems to have gone away. I'm watching it closely and will try a burn-in.  The OCZ was a dual +12v rail PSU, this one is a single +12V @ 54A.

How old is your Monitor?  Do you add an extension to the VGA or DVI cable? If you can try another cable to see if the problem persist
Monitor is pretty new, only 9 months old. It's a straight DVI cable. No extensions or adapters.
    Quote
Think its comes from monitor itself.
Have you removed the old drivers 1st with >>Driver Sweeper<<?
I didn't use Driver Sweeper yet, but if it returns I will do a proper clean install.
Thanks for the replies. Keeping my fingers crossed that it was just a power issue.

  • I think my iBook G4 is dying...

I've had my iBook G4 for about a year and lately it's been getting real slow and every few weeks I get the blue screen of death for a few hours, but even before that my display has been going out randomly. Sometimes when I try to wake it from sleep it doesn't come back on, but the computer itself is on (I can hear the volume change, press the caps lock key and see it light up) and other times it just goes out while I'm using it. I'm no expert, but it seems like it could be a loose wire? Thoughts? Any way to fix it? Thanks!

    B,
yes, sometimes when I've moved it it's flickered and I think once or twice it's gone out
Most likely that's an inverter problem. If it is you should get it fixed. The problem usually occurs at the hinge point and if it shorts out (vs just opening up) it could blow a tiny SMT fuse on the logic board. Been there and fixed that but a pro is probably going to want to replace the cable and the logic board. $$.
are they something I could fix on my own
    Yes if you're experienced.
or would I have to have a pro do it and if so, expensive?
Not too at this point. Probably around $75 + parts (see iFixit for that cost) but maybe more in LA. Oh check w/ DT&T services:

    They're in Fremont, CA.

  • IPad 3 thinks audio is going to Line Out

    Hi All,
I've been trying to find a solution for this issue I'm having.  It's nothing major, just annoying.
I've tried searching but can't find anyone with this same issue.
Every now and then, the ipad will have 0 sound coming out of the speakers.  This is not a mute problem.  I have my switch set to lock the rotation of the screen, not volume control.  Using the volume buttons does not work.  If you use the "dashboard" (I'm not sure what to call it, when you swipe with 1 finger up on the bottom of the screen.) normally you will also be able to use the volume slider here.  But when the ipad becomes silent the volume slider disappears.
If I plug in headphones I am able to hear sound and change the volume with the volume buttons.  But when the headphones are removed, the volume control disappears again.
Through an audio recording program I have, I discovered that the ipad thinks the audio is going to "Line out".  The app is able to tell me audio input and output.  When the ipad is functioning normally, the audio out will say "Speaker" and "Built in mic" for input.  When headphones are plugged in, both input and output will say headset.
So I believe this issue is being caused by the ipad thinking it is connected to something and the audio is being routed to the "Line out".  But this seems to happen at random.  I am unsure how to fix this so it will not happen again, or what is causing the ipad to think it is connected to external speakers.
I hope someone out there can help.  If there are any more details needed please let me know.  I have tried to give as much detail on this issue as I could.
    Thank you all in advance.
    -Carlo

The little "thinking circle" right beside the 3g label in the top left hand corner never goes away in my mail app. This just started happening within the past week. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't chewing up my battery and bandwidth. Does anyone know why this might be happening or how I can make it stop?
I have mail set to check every 15 minutes, but it just keeps checking continuously. I check yahoo and gmail accounts.

My Ipad started doing the same thing this past week(5-6 times, and I am on manual), I tried switching app's and going back and it was still running. I then went to email sent, and after the sent mail was loaded I went back to mail, and it then loaded my new messages. suerte...

  • My macbook 2008 screen went black a few months ago. I've been using it with a monitor. Today it's working. I have a feeling it's going to die at any time. Is it possible that a software patch fixed this ? Is there a utility I can run to test the screen ?

    Model : Macbook 2008
Symptoms: The screen was, intermittently, going black last year and then went black completely. I have been using it on a monitor ever since.
I can see the screen with a flashlight.
I completely erased the drive and loaded OSx 10.7. I believe that's the last version of OSx Mac will be supporting on this computer.
When I booted up the computer this morning the screen came on !
While typing this question, my screen went black again, not to return.
    So sad.
I did bring it to Apple and they believed the entire screen needed to be replaced.
They say that they tried a new inverter and it didn't work.
I have a feeling I'm just out of luck unless I want to cough up the $300 to fix the screen.
Although it is a solid machine, 2Ghz processor with 4 gigs of ram, it is still six years old.
I imagine that's like putting a new transmission in a 95 Honda civic. Yeah, it's a reliable car but it's old and it's probably going to break again.
I love my mac so much but I can't justify buying a new one or  paying to fix this old one.
I have a Gateway dual booting Windows 7 and ubuntu linux that's actually pretty slick and has taken it's place on business trips and coffee shop excursions.
If anyone has any thoughts or feedback I'd appreciate it.

The current Apple hardware warranty provides the following coverage for replacement parts:
A replacementpart or product, including a user-installable part that has been installed in accordance withinstructions provided by Apple, assumes the remaining warranty of the Apple Product orninety (90) days from the date of replacement or repair, whichever provides longer coveragefor you.
Check your particular warranty and see where you stand as to the period of coverage.

  • I think my hard drive is dying, do you agree?

Hello folks! I have a late 2011 15" MbP, and recently it has become extremely slow and glitchy. I have checked the activity monitor to see if anything is using up my memory (I have 8 gb) or my processor (I picked the best one offered at the time), and even when my computer is completely frozen, the activity monitor does not show any excessive processor or ram usage. My computer being glitchy and slow randomly started about 5 days ago, I have not installed/done anything different in the last few days, so I don't think that is the problem. Also, I have windows 7 installed via bootcamp, and it is experiencing the exact same problems. I have had to force restart (hold the power button down) both operating systems at least 2 times each today, so I think it is getting worse. Does this sound like a failing hdd to anyone?
    Thanks!

Actually I took some time to "revisit" the free space recommendations. For power users (e.g. media production) users free space is recommended not to drop below 50% of the boot volume space.
The fusion drive puts the OS on one drive and your applications & data on another - its seamless you don't have to do anything the OS is monitoring how much free space the boot volume can access.
Partitioning a single drive (in the case of Mavericks that wants 8GB minimum - such a partition should be that 8, plus room for VMEM and scratch files)... so make a 12-25GB partition (how many apps will you install)  and put the OS on that would act in a like manner - but it would not be a Fusion drive and it would not be seamless,
You would use the rest of the drive for storage and apps that do not have to reside (installer allows you to change the default install site) on the boot volume.

  • Computer old and probably going to die soon.  Help needed backing up iTunes

My G4 has lost most of it's hard drive space and I'm too stupid to figure out how to clear it up. You guys have tried to help me, but my mind goes numb after I get past 'Emptying the Trash'. I've come to the realization that I must now buy a new Mac. I have an external hard drive that I've backed up most of my stuff on, but I'm a little concerned about my iTunes music. When I drag music onto the external drive, they seem to transfer correctly. However, when I look at the song icon on the external drive, there is a little padlock next to each song. Padlocks frighten me. Does this mean that I'll not be able to open these songs when I try and put them on my new computer? I appreciate any help you can give me. If you are kind enough to try and help, please type your instructions as if you were talking to an infant.

Let's work on the freeing up space issue. This is like looking at your house and saying you need to find about space usage.
Let's start with Disk Inventory. Download the .dmg file, click it to get it to mount (make a pretend hard drive). Then copy the application to somewhere on your computer. Drag the pretend hard drive to the trash and double click on the copy on your computer to start the application.
When DI starts it will look at your computer for drives/volumes. It will show the size of the volume and how much is free. What does it say?
After that, click on a volume (if you have more than one) and have it start analyzing the volume. When it's don't you'll have a map of the drive, and a key to the colors and file types on the right. The types will be organized according to how much space each type is taking up in total. DI tells me on my computer I have 50GB in mp3 type music files, 6.5 GB in mp4 type music files, and so on. Now' there's also a few other things to note. Although most of my music files come under "MP3 audio" at the top, I also have a few GB under "Mp3 Audio File" a little ways down the list, and even "mp3 document" - all mp3 music files. I also have some movies as "AVI". So I can see at a glance that over half my 120 GB drive is being taken up by two file types.
Now if I want/need space I have to look at what's taking up room. I can see I have a lot of mp3, mp3 audio, aac, and related music file types. Itunes itself reports many GB of music so I am not surprised about this. I can select a file type series such as "mp3 audio" and right click or control+click on it to show files in selection list. When I do that a new window appears listing all my mp3 files. I can scroll down the list. When doing so I did notice one file I had in duplicate which was taking up 20 MB of space. I then right clicked on it and sent the duplicate to the trash. Incidentally, I knew there should only be one copy of that file, and getting rid of 20 MB won't free up your computer by a whole lot unless you have 200 files of that kind.
Unless you have a tiny drive we're probably only interested in what's taking up GB of drive space, or at most maybe hundreds of MB. You can spend hours going through 1 MB files and not free significant space (though it is good for general housekeeping). So, keep on selecting a set of the big file types and right click to show in selection list. Then scroll down the selection list which will also be organized according to file size. Look for big files and decide if you want to keep it.
    A few things to note.
You're mostly looking for files that will include your name in the "path" column. Disk Inventory lists all files, including many big ones that are system files and should not be touched. I have 5.5 GB as "Documents" but the top 3 are large system files. Below that, however, I notice I have 3 copies of a photograph file which got listed as a document because I don't have the software for opening the file on this computer and the computer decided it was a document. Since I recognize the file name as something I created 2 years ago I know what it is and that the should only be one copy. I can definitely get rid of two copies of the file and free up 260 MB that way.
What you are initially looking for are things you would probably recognize by name and say "Oh, that's where I put that movie!" Or you'll see you have two copies of a huge movie file and that's what's taking up space. Or you'll simply see you have 20 movie files, all of which you want to keep but you'll see that that's where 10 GB of your drive have gone.
After doing this initial browse you may find you have some odd files that you recognize but forgot you have and can now delete. You may also decide you have nothing you can get rid of but at least now you know and you don't have any option but to move files to other places. Or you may decide need a bigger hard drive, or possibly upgrade the whole computer to one with a bigger hard drive too, but at least making that decision. With the advent of digital media many people are simply outgrowing their drives.
In a few cases something may be going wrong and creating either a huge log file. There's something called swap files which will be big but belong there. If you see anything that's bigger than a GB but you don't recognize, ask about it here.
