I think my hard disc crashed

My computer shut down and when I started it back up I got a black box that instructs me::: You need to restart your computer (in 4 different languages). I tried to restart using the OX system software but it only gets so far and quits.
Is this a crash and what can I do?

You are having kernel panics as shown in this Apple doc.#106227.
Do everything in Dr.Smokes Resolving Kernel Panics.
Cheers!

If my hard disc crashed and I have my Acrobat serial number, etc, can I re-download Acrobat?.

    Hi,
If Adobe provides the download link for Acrobat version you are trying to install and you have an account with Adobe, then you can try activating the software on your machine.
But, before that please let me know what Acrobat version do you want to download.
    Hope to hear from you.

  • How can I update existing website with Iweb after hard disc crash?

I created my website on iweb and published it (but not at mobile me). Unfortunately my hard disc crashed, before I saved my webpage. Now I bought a new web and want to update my published website. How do I open it in my new Iweb 9 to update it?
    Thanks for your help,
    orisu

Your iWeb data is stored, not in your actual published html files, but in a file called Domain.sites which is stored in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. If you want to work on your site on another computer, copy this file to a thumb drive to move it around.

  • Why would hard disc crash after installing Leopard?

Shortly after installing Leopard on my Macbook, my hard drive crashed. I replaced the hard drive but the installation would not then complete because of an input/ output error (according to the log). The DVD installation disc is OK according to First Aid and there are no marks on the surface of the disc. The DVD drive appears to read other discs OK according toe First Aid.
Why would the hard drive crash and why will Leopard not install?

You could also check the connections to the new HD. Even if the connectors appear to be fully inserted, check for physical problems such as impacted pins, (ones that are bent or pushed back into the connector body) which won't make full contact. Check also for signs of sharp bending in the connector ribbon which may indicate a damaged or broken core.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have to transfer the music from your iPod to iTunes. There are some third-party applications that can do it > https://discussions.apple.com/message/11319208#11319208

  • I think my hard drive crashed....

    Hi,
When I turn on my computer (a Power Mac G4 Tower)it sounds as if the disc has crashed. I have two hard drives running in it, and when I start up the computer holding the 'option' key, neither of them show up. When I turn it on without holding anything, it shows a folder with a question mark and the finder icon. Starting it up in single-user mode doesn't work, and I can't reboot from the startup disk. Also, when I attached my external hard drive and held down option, it wouldn't appear either.
Any idea on what is wrong?

Hello! It's highly unlikely that both of your drives would crash at the same time. As for your external is it firewire and did it have a "bootable" system on it? Try starting from the install cd holding down the "c" key and use the repair disk in disk utility. It may take a few minutes to boot from the install cd so hold down the "c" key until it's nearly booted. Tom

  • I think my hard drive crashed.... can it be replaced?

My macbook just crashed two nights ago. I tried to reboot, but did not work. My firefox was open, my iMovie was opened... then I switched it off and on back. There was this image (a box/folder with a question mark on it). Then I tried to reinstall my OS, but it could not find the HD. But at least my DVD drive still works. So, I guess my Hard Drive just went kaputt!
I just found out how to replace the hard drive : http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inch_HardDriveDIY.pdf
    Question :
    1) Is it really my hard drive broken? Or something else?
    2) If it is the hard drive, can I just get any HD for macbook on Ebay?
    3) Has anyone tried the this DIY manual? Was it easy?
    Thanks in advance

Yes, your hard drive is probably dead. You can use any drive, of course, but I would strongly recommend buying a new, boxed drive.
I have installed laptop drives, including Apple portable drives, and it is quite easy. Follow the instructions, and remember to ground yourself before touching the new hard drive to install it in the computer.

  • I think my hard drive crashed. How can I get data off via firewire before the HD completely goes? I was stuck on the BSoD and now I can't even use the install disk. Utility Disk said HD was okay. Please HELP ME

    Safe mode did nothing.
Safe mode with verbose seemed to make it worse.
Before continuously trying new things, I could use the install disk to check the disk utility and clear
the hard drive from there but now the screen won't even load to that.
I really need the data on the hard drive especially if it can't be salvaged.
    How can i transfer files?
Am I better off physically taking my HD out or will it damage itself without
    leaving the system.
    I tried command r
    resetting the pram
    safe mode
    jumping out a window
    nothing has helped.
I am stuck on the blue screen of death and it flickers.

No. In order to use FireWire Target Disk Mode you need to use a FireWire equipped Mac. Other than that the only other way I can think of to even attempt to access you files would be to remove your hard drive and install it in a case and connect it to another computer.
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

  • Hard disc crash...???

    hi,
my macbook does not start and shows a white/gray screen. after some time a folder symbol with a question mark shows. i started from mac os install disk (10.5) and tried the hard disk utility. it shows the hard drive, but no partition on it. the buttons "repair volume" and "check volume" are greyed out. when i push the "info" button it shows some details and says the hard disk is not formatted.
i did a backup with time machine, but that was a couple of weeks ago. i edited a video film in i guess 50 hours... (CRY!). it cannot be gone.
any tipps apart from "bring the hard disk to a special company charging you $500 and not guaranteeing that they can do anything..."...
    pleeeeaaaseee help!
    thanks

You could try reformatting your drive from Disk Utility.

  • Hard disc crashed, trying to reinstall applications. where do I get Elements for Mac OS 10.6?

I had Elements on my Mac when drive crashed. No idea what version I had, but I do have a box for Elements 3 with serial number and I know I upgraded it.  Need version for 10.6.8.  Where can I download the version for my OS?
    Thanks,Rye

I'll give that a try.  The only issue is way back when, I was using an old AOL email account which I don't use anymore, and trying to get back into that account is impossible because Adobe sends a new password to the old AOL account.  And I don't see any way to email anyone to get this figured out.

  • Hard drive crashed. How do I get OSX on my new drive?

I think my hard drive crashed, oh my.  First, let me say that all my data is backed-up on a cloud drive or on my network drive.  So, I am good there.  The computer is now completely inoperable, can't start up, not even in safe mode. Just goes to Apple grey screen and then shuts down, that Issa far as I can get. Does not even play the start-up chime anymore.
Question I have is this: I did not make a bootable start-up drive (dumb), so when I get a new drive to replace this, how will I get the OS on it to start- up and get the new drive ready?

If you don't get a startup chime then you may have a worse problem. Just be prepared.
What year is your MBP? From 2011 onward you would use Internet Recovery. Earlier you would need to install the original software that came with the computer on software restore DVDs.
    Internet Recovery
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
    DVD Installation:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How can I get my playlists back after hard disc change?

My hard disc crashed. After changing a new hard disc and installing iTunes again all my playlists were gone. I had the music files backed up and could import them back to iTunes libraries but the playlists are gone. I spent hours making them. Is there any way of restoring them? I have a PC with windows XP.

    Yes.
Close iTunes then rename the iTunes folder in My Music to "iTunes Old"
Then copy the entire iTunes folder from your user account in My Music the old hard drive to the My Music folder on the new hard drive.
Let it finish copying then open iTunes.

Error msg " The serial no you entered is valid, but a qualifying product cannot be found on this computer" appears. Can't reinstall CS5.5 onto Macbook pro after Hard disc crashed & was changed.

It is not clear if you understand what that message is indicating.  It is telling you that you need to identify the older version of whatever CS5.5 upgrade you are installing to prove that you qualify for the upgrade.  This could be CS5, CS4, etc.

  • FCP X does not recognise my hard disc for storage

I run all my applications of a 120 GB SSD and replaced my DVD drive with a 1 TB hard disc for storage. This is working very well with all my applications apart from FCP. FCP simply does not recognise my hard disc as a place for storage, although it has no problem recognising it as a source to import from.
After doing some research on other forums, most commonly this problem is due to your hard disc having a typical "camera picture name" like "IMG_001" or "DCI_001" etc. for a folder at root level, thus FCP thinks the hard disc is a camera (for import) but not suitable for storage.
I have been messing around with this for days now, and would really appreciate some help.
    Thanks in advance
p.s screen shots of typical infomation attached
    - Duddleif is the name of the SSD
    - Kjell is the name of the 'missing' hard disc

Instead of using older OS X CD/DVD install to a new drive.
Where is your backup and clone?
Buy some drives! that is a must.
Pick up a FW case, you will need it to put the old drive in, and later, so you have an external and off line drive for backups and maintenance.
A copy of TechTool Pro 4/5 and Disk Warrior (DW first).
    SuperDuper to clone your drives.
Demo of Prosoft Data Rescue 3 to scan the drive once you have a system and you put the 'dead' drive in FW case.
Then do backups and preventative maintenance on a very regular basis and have at least two backup sets.
If you have been doing that, and know and have read those instructions in the past....
