I think my hard drive crashed.... can it be replaced?

My macbook just crashed two nights ago. I tried to reboot, but did not work. My firefox was open, my iMovie was opened... then I switched it off and on back. There was this image (a box/folder with a question mark on it). Then I tried to reinstall my OS, but it could not find the HD. But at least my DVD drive still works. So, I guess my Hard Drive just went kaputt!
I just found out how to replace the hard drive : http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inch_HardDriveDIY.pdf
Question :
1) Is it really my hard drive broken? Or something else?
2) If it is the hard drive, can I just get any HD for macbook on Ebay?
3) Has anyone tried the this DIY manual? Was it easy?
Thanks in advance

Yes, your hard drive is probably dead. You can use any drive, of course, but I would strongly recommend buying a new, boxed drive.
I have installed laptop drives, including Apple portable drives, and it is quite easy. Follow the instructions, and remember to ground yourself before touching the new hard drive to install it in the computer.

Ok, I won't say anything about backing up, it sounds like you have learned your lesson. Anyway, forum regular, Zevoneer, has written a very extensive explanation on how to move your library iPod>iTunes. Please see Zevoneer's post on the following link.

  • My hard drive crashed and when I replaced it, I am unable to sync most of my music.  The message "file not found" appears.  I have all my music on my .  How can I upload these to iCloud or iTunes?

My hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  I also switched from ATT to Verizon for my iPhone.  Now when I sync with iTunes, only about a tenth of my songs are on the new iPhone.  one or two from each album.  I still have an iPad with all my songs on it.  I subscribed to music match, but when I try on the iPad it wants to match with iTunes and erase a\the music on the iPad.  I have no music on iCloud when I sign in.  Can anyone help me???

If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

My hard drive crashed and lost everything.  New computer with ITunes...I can't get my IPhone to upload/sync to the computer

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

My hard drive crashed, but I attached it as a slave drive using an older PC and I can see all of my files but I can't start any programs (iTunes) from this slave drive.
How can I copy iTunes music files and library to a removable drive, and then use that drive to restore it all in iTunes on another PC? I would like to keep my playlists too.
I have everything I want on my iPod too, can I just copy everything from my iPod to my new PC? Which is easier?

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Hard drive crashed. can i reinstall the snow leopard disc from before even though it was a single user?

My hard drive crashed on my macbook about a year ago. I bought a brand new hard drive and brand new full install snow leopard discs single user to install on my empty hard drive. about a year later the hard drive crashed again, but it was still under warranty so i sent it out to get a new one. now when i try to install the same snow leopard disc, it says it can not be installed on this computer. I feel like I've been ripped off now, because i have no operating system on my computer and i already spent $129 on the snow leopard disc a year ago. Is there anything i can do to install this? I also have an iMac, I heard you can take the operating system from that or something? I just need my macbook back.

Is there anything i can do to install this?
Yes. Boot from the installation disc, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select the internal drive, and partition it with the default options. Then run the Installer.

My hard drive crashed. If I load Itunes onto my computer or if I just hook my iPhone up to the computer with the music transfer or sych?

Content purchased from iTunes can be redownloaded.
    Downloading past purchases from iTunes
iTunes purchased content on the device can be transferred to the computer, simply connect the device.  Do not Sync!  Select File > Transfer Purchases.
The best solution is to use the backup of the computer to put everything back.

  • Hard Drive Crashed: Can I re-download my paid for songs from iTunes?

Recently my hard drive crashed and took my library with it. Can I re-download my paid songs from iTunes?

Be easiest to restore from your back up.
You do make regular back ups of your important files, correct?
iTunes Store Terms of Service allows for only one download.
You could send an email to -> iTunes Store - Customer Service and grovel at their feet and beg for a redownload.
However, if granted (or not), I would highly recommend you immediately learn how & start to back up your computer.

  • I think my hard drive crashed. How can I get data off via firewire before the HD completely goes? I was stuck on the BSoD and now I can't even use the install disk. Utility Disk said HD was okay. Please HELP ME

    Safe mode did nothing.
Safe mode with verbose seemed to make it worse.
Before continuously trying new things, I could use the install disk to check the disk utility and clear
the hard drive from there but now the screen won't even load to that.
I really need the data on the hard drive especially if it can't be salvaged.
    How can i transfer files?
Am I better off physically taking my HD out or will it damage itself without
    leaving the system.
    I tried command r
    resetting the pram
    safe mode
    jumping out a window
    nothing has helped.
I am stuck on the blue screen of death and it flickers.

No. In order to use FireWire Target Disk Mode you need to use a FireWire equipped Mac. Other than that the only other way I can think of to even attempt to access you files would be to remove your hard drive and install it in a case and connect it to another computer.

  • I think my hard drive crashed....

    Hi,
When I turn on my computer (a Power Mac G4 Tower)it sounds as if the disc has crashed. I have two hard drives running in it, and when I start up the computer holding the 'option' key, neither of them show up. When I turn it on without holding anything, it shows a folder with a question mark and the finder icon. Starting it up in single-user mode doesn't work, and I can't reboot from the startup disk. Also, when I attached my external hard drive and held down option, it wouldn't appear either.
Any idea on what is wrong?

Hello! It's highly unlikely that both of your drives would crash at the same time. As for your external is it firewire and did it have a "bootable" system on it? Try starting from the install cd holding down the "c" key and use the repair disk in disk utility. It may take a few minutes to boot from the install cd so hold down the "c" key until it's nearly booted. Tom

  • Hard drive crashed - can I recover my photos and music?

Hi, the external hard drive that I stored all my music and photos on has crashed (I had a backup but it got damaged through a separate accident - not having a good week). I'm trying to recover lost data from the failed HDD but am not having much luck.
My ipad has about 70% of the photos from my HDD and most of the music. Is there a way to transfer music and photos off my ipad back onto a HDD?
Any help would be awesome. Thanks,
    Lee

You can redownload purchased music.  But macs cannot backup to iCloud, thus cannot restore from it. Instead, restore your time machine backup to the new drive. everything will be as it was before.

  • My hard drive crashed - can I transfer songs from iPod back into iTunes?

My computer's hardrive crashed and I had to replace the entire hardrive. (Grrrrrr!) I lost the folder that contained all of my music. I re-downloaded iTunes onto my computer with the new hard drive but now my library is empty. All my songs are still in my iPod...
Is it possible to do a "reverse" transfer. In other words, put the songs from my iPod back into my iTunes. If so - HOW?
I'm afraid to hook up my iPod to my computer because I don't want the automatic upgrade to start and then my iPod will be empty too.
    Please send help!

As iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. When you connect you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are quite cheap these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

  • HT1335 my hard drive crashed can i get the music from my ipod (windows)

does anyone know how to get the music off my old ipod to my new computer?

Some of the information below has subsequently been summarized and duplicated by turingtest2 in the document: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
