I Think My Harddrive is Dying!
My PB, is making a very strange noise and is starting up very slowly. The sound is definitely coming from the HD area and sounds like a grinding/moaning sound. While it will eventually get to the desktop, opening apps is taking forever and sometimes just won't open. I ran disk utility and verified/repaired permissions.
If death is about to occur, I really just want my photos, so what is best way to get those things on a DVD quick...toast or iphoto export?
Any other ideas/hints? Thanks!!!

It seems my PowerBook is exhibiting the same effects as yours. Something in the HD area is deffinately making some unhealthy noises. Similarly, I was worried about losing data and wanted to back-up to an external HD I have. I was too frightened to turn my PB on again incase the unhealthy noises were causing more damage - so how to back-up the data? I took my PB into the Apple Store along with my external HD. The "Genius Bar" in the Regent St. store in London was typically oversubscribed so no-one was available to help me. So I just borrowed one of the iMacs on display, plugged in my external USB drive, connected by PB with a FireWire cable, and turned it on holding down "T" (target disk mode). I was then able to transfer files from my PB's HD to my ext. USB HD using the iMac. I did hear the same unhealthy noises coming from my PB during some of the file transfers, but only occasionally. The data was transfered successfully. I guess you could do a similar thing if you have access to another Mac with a DVD writer - just use your PB as an external firewire drive to access the data you want.
I am trying to find out what exactly is wrong with my PB. If I have to get a new HD, I'll probably install it myself - places charge a fortune to do it for you, and there are good DIY guides online (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-12-Inch/HD-Replacement)
If you find out any more about your problem or ways to fix your PB, please let me know. I'd be glad to find out.

Background: the CD drive died years ago, but it runs Tiger just fine. Replaced the battery a few weeks ago and it holds a charge well. A few months ago, the trackpad sensor (?) started getting iffy, but I learned how to tighten it up by popping out the keyboard and Airport card and pushing in the ribbon thingy. It's a backup Mac -- my sister uses it to play games while on bed rest, and my mom uses it for e-mail and FaceBook when I'm working on the desktop iMac.
Yesterday, Mom said the "pointer" froze while she was logging off FaceBook, so I shut it down and tightened it. I booted up, turned on Airport, and got online. No problem.
This morning, Mom was on FaceBook when it froze -- not the "pointer," but the internet connection. I tried to re-boot, but got the dreaded "?" symbol. I was able to shut it down, and upon starting it again, managed to get about 95% success. Everything showed up on the desktop, but portions of the menu bar were missing -- Airport icon, clock, etc.
I shut down and tried to boot into Safe Mode. It never got past the grey screen with the Apple logo and rotating "gear." After a half hour or so, I forced shutdown and let it rest an hour.
I then started it up again and reset the PRAM -- again, it won't get past the grey screen/logo/rotating gear. There's a faint clicking-growl-buzzing sound.
I'll most likely buy a cheap replacement on eBay, until I can afford a new one, but I'd like to be able to get this one up and running long enough to do a proper clean-off. Any suggestions are appreciated!My wife had the same freeze and then no startup. Plus deafening jet-engine-like fan noise. Black screen.

The discussions about the loud fan and startup failure seems to indicate the only solution is a new logic board. But still, I'm wondering, is there any other possible solution?
Or maybe it's finally time to move up from Tiger to Lion ;-) -
Think hard drive is dying- please help!
Started the G5 today and heard clicking/ cludding sounds. I believe they came from the top of the tower, which is where the hard drives are (I have an extra one for video storage). The OS would not start up but instead I got a “?” flashing on and off and I believe it was inside a small folder. I had been noticing sounds that sound like shifting to me from a hard drive (impossible to tell which one) for a while now. Last time I heard sounds like this was on my PC and the drive was dying.
Told all this to the AppleCare rep who went through some stuff then concluded that it was a software issue and I should try removing one of the 2 programs she was unfamiliar with: Little Snitch and the software for my Contour Shuttle (like another mouse for video work). I told her this was unlikely as these were very common aps and everything had been fine for quite a while. She said I was welcome to take the G5 to a service center where they could test if it was in fact a hardware issue.
What I’m wondering is 1- does this sound like a hardware issue & 2- is there a way to backup the whole drive?
I may have another SATA drive I could use to back it up and have a TrayDock external FW800 case that allows you to use internal SATA drives. I’ve taken drives from the TrayDock and used them on the G5s other internal slot w/o issue. So it seems to me all I would need to do is get all the info on to the backup, and set the jumper setting correctly. Am I right? If so, how do I get all the info onto the backup and how would the jumper need to be set when it becomes the main Macintosh HD?I read a report Google did on hard drive failures. It is available in pdf format and quite interesting.
I use Applejack religiously along with Disk Warrior 4 and Carbon Copy Cloner 3. I also use Intech Speedtools to handle bad blocks, defrag, zonebench/quickbench. And I regularly zero my drive before using and again on yearly basis or as needed.
I am not sure why having 4.5 GB RAM would be a factor unless running Memtest or Rember or the Apple Hardware TEst in Extended/Loop Mode.
The best way to "defrag" is quite simple, old-fashioned. It is called *backup and restore* with an erase/zero drive in the middle (dump simultaneously to two tape sets would be very old school!).
DW4 - hold down option and the Rebuild button changes and lets you do a deeper 'scavenger" run which is helpful. I would run the test files first too, but it always opens to the directory rebuild.
When dealing with a problem drive, I start by throwing away stuff I don't need, have backed up, and can replace. From newest to older. Peeling an onion to unravel any cross-linked files in the process.
If it is a boot drive and early on, consider using Single User Mode and fsck along with Applejack. You want to delete all the cache and swap files along with any temp files or logs. It works. And restart into Safe Mode.
SMART is not very smart and does not "predict" failures. That was just one of the conclusions of the Google study where they use thousands of drives and need to know about reliability. -
only today it's been kinda dull, and goes from dull to bright (normal) and just really annoying. can this be fixed......well, without buying another laptop? hopefully it goes away but have u heard of something similar?
If your iBook is around the 3yr old mark or longer then I would say the wiring thru the right hinge that carries voltage etc to the screen's backlight is starting to fail. I would think seriously about
1. Repairing it ($300 min)
2. Replacing the display ($300)
3. Fixing it yourself ($30 part and 6 hrs of your time - very difficult repair job)
4. Sell the iBook before it fails consistently and buy another laptop Mac
If I were you I would sell and buy another laptop. Time to move on, I say. -
HELP! I think my MBP just died!
I was working with a few apps open (Safari, Mail and Final Cut Pro, I believe), got distracted and when I turned back to my MBP I couldn't find the mouse pointer anywhere and the computer didn't respond to anything I did on the keyboard - including 'force quit'.
I've had a few crashes in my day, so I did what I believed the only option. I held the power key down until the computer shut off completely, waited a bit and rebooted. I expected a longer startup as the computer recovered, but it never fully came on. The keyboard backlight came on, but it seemed to get hung up there - the screen was totally blank. Eventually I tried it over again and now the only indication that it's even on is a little fan noise, the light on the latch button and extreme heat coming from the bottom (center on the screen side).
I AM FREAKING OUT!
I don't know where to begin trouble shooting when the screen is black.
At the time of the crash it was hooked up to the power supply, a 30" Cinema Display (daisy chained to a USB printer and a firewire external drive), an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, Monsoon speakers and a firewire 800 drive. Now it's hooked up to nothing and the results are the same.
It hasn't moved off my desk in a couple months and I can't think of anything strange that I may have installed lately.
It's a few hours until AppleCare shows up for work. Any ideas?

KennyOK...the first question is just how far your computer gets while starting up. Do you hear the normal Mac startup sound? If so, then try to reset the PRAM. You do this by holding down AppleOption+PR and waiting to hear the Apple startup again. If this doesn't happen...try taking out the battery and totally unplugging the mac. If you need any more advice or some online support, email me...I'll be up for a while.

I use my Ipod an awful lot. If i don't use it in the house then it is plugged into my stereo in the car. I have been thinking for a while that as its on constant charge in my car during journeys perhaps that is the reason that i am having problems. It keeps stalling after skipping through a few songs. The battery lasts only a day when not on permanment charge. The screen also keep freezing up. As i bought it last September i believe that it may still be covered under warranty do people think it could be the battery?

HELP! I think my iPod is dying
I have a 2004 fourth-generation 60G iPod with color display. It worked wonderfully for years on a PC. About 1 year ago, it started having problems. I accidentally ran it until the battery was drained. I tried to plug it in to recharge it. This did not work. I had to restore it. Since then, I have accidentally drained the battery a couple more times; each time, I have to RESTORE it. This alone is frustrating, but it gets worse.
I switched from PC to Mac a few months ago, and I hoped the problems would stop and that my iPod would behave better because I am now connecting it to a better computer. Well, the same problem has continued.
Last week, when the battery drained yet again, I went to perform the RESTORE. After I did this, it said my 60G iPod now has only a capacity of 16.22G. What the heck happened to the other 43.78 gigs? I tried several suggestions, including restoring several more times, running the Mac Disk Utility to erase the iPod (which did not work because it said there was an Input/Output error), and even tried plugging it back into my PC to try to format it that way. Nothing worked.
Now, when I plug it into my Mac, the Mac won't even acknowledge it. Is it because I formatted to the PC? If so, I cannot remember how to format it back to the Mac, because the Mac won't even see it in order to format it. It gets worse.
For some reason, when I try to reset my iPod by holding down the Select and Menu buttons at the same time, it starts to reset, but it makes this horrible, LOUD clicking sound like I have never heard before. It literally sounds as if something inside the iPod is BROKEN (like the drive is trying to spin but is getting stuck on something), but I have not dropped it.
What are my options? Don't tell me I need to get a new iPod. I dropped $400 on this thing brand new with the intention of never needing to buy a new one again. Never? That's an unrealistic expectation for a consumer electronics product with a hard drive inside that you carry around with you in your pocket.
Try connecting the iPod, and running Disk Utility (quit iTunes if running). Select the iPod's hard drive in the sidebar (select the drive and not the volume indented under the drive). Go to the Erase tab. Set the format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ and erase (reformat) the iPod's hard drive.
If the erase completes successfully, quit Disk Utility. Run iTunes and immediately perform another Restore to install and initialize the iPod's software.
If the erase stalls or errors out, there may be a problem with the iPod's hard drive. -
How can i save it permanently to my iPhone when everytime I sync i cant access it ? When i use home sharing as soon as the wifi is down it doesnt work ? I need it to be saved to my phone and I can use it on the go ! I need help, its killing me !!!!!!

I think my hub is dying -- can I get a free replac...
Every now and then my BT hub (router) seems to just turn off. I checked the electrics and plugged in other things/switched plugs but it made no difference.
Although it's working right now, I'm worried it might suddenly go when I arrive home one day from work.
Is it possible to request a replacement?
Or, can I buy one of them fancy shiny routers from PC World (etc...) and use that? -- I'm unsure what details I would need to hook up my BT Broadband to a none-BT router.

Help! I think my iMac just died.
Hi all, so I was about to print a couple CDs using my external Lightscribe drive, my iMac was working fine, but the moment I plugged the USB into the iMac it switched off and wouldn't switch back on! Yikes! So I unplugged everything, including the power cord and waited a few minutes. Plugged the power cord back in and tried switching it on, but nothing, no beep, no fans, just nothing. I'm at a loss for what to do. It felt as though perhaps the Lightscribe drive might have shorted the iMac in some way, like a fuse was blown, do iMacs have fuses? Gee, I really need some help. I use this machine for my work, I spent soooo many pennies on it, it surely can't be dead already can it? Any help anyone can give would be hugely appreciated, really. Thank you.

I'm trying to fix a Mac Mini (late 2012 model) for a familymember. He bought a used Mac Mini and it looks good on the outside, but something seems to be wrong inside. Now, I'm great with computers but relatively new to Apple hardware, and so I turn to all of you for some help.
The symptoms:
- Mac Mini loads everything insanely slow. It's like a handicapped snail.
- Very random boottimes, sometimes it boots in 40 seconds, sometimes it takes 5+ minutes.
What I've tried:
- Checked the harddrive with the Disk Utility. The test returns no problems. The SMART status is also listed as verified.
- Ran a speedtest on the harddrive to see if its performance is below expectations. Results were around 100MB/s sec write and read speed.
- Ran the Apple Hardware Test: no problems detected.
- Formatting the harddrive and reinstalling OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion. Faced lots of problems during installation, had to start over three times (confirms it as a hardware issue for me).
Now, I'm thinking the harddrive is dying but all the tests show it's just fine. Any suggestions?Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

i enter it but when i hit enter it doesn't prompt for a password. instead it moves the cursor down a line
[luckily it also starts ssh, and i can get X running by logging on remotely]
could this be related

i was thinking the harddrive was dieing, but i was running ssh with security last in mind (root password was root) ...and i noticed when logging in from school that the last access was from an ip that end up being from Romania - my root password was changed, and the ftp server rules were changed. so i guess a malicious person could have deleted other stuff

I'm not quite sure what these errors mean so if someone could enlighten me, and yes this is the drive my archlinux install is in. All my other drives seem fine with no errors.

What can I do to log in to my computer? I think it died.
It is wanting me to log in, and won't accept my password fully. It accepts it for about a second, then goes right back to log in. It won't turn off either. I never have had to do this before. Now it is off completely, but I think the battery has died. I'm going to check by plugging it in, but I hope someone can help me in case this keeps up.
Like I said, the starry default screen came up, asking for my log-in. I put it in, it accepts and "start"s up and then not a second after shows a blue screen, and goes back to the starry log in. I have never had to log in since buying this computer last february. I'm really scared that I lost everything, as I had a thousands-list of garage sale items just finished and saved. Not to mention, I have some pictures and such that I've added since backing it up. PLEASE HELP ASAP this is one sad girl tonight.

I bought a black 30GB 5th Gen. a couple of years ago. Everything has been going great until yesterday. It started freaking out saying it was charging, then showing the battery almost dead.Now it doesn't show up in Itunes or Windows! It is also making a weird noise. I tried reseting it and everything but all it will do is show the apple screen then go to the sad Ipod face... Am I screwed? I really don't want to drive 2 hours away to go get this thing fixed!

If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case.
