I think my HD just bit it...

I've got an early 06 CD iMac. This morning my computer wouldn't wake from sleep, so I held the power down to shut it off and then booted it back up. It wouldn't boot into the OS. So I booted into my Leopard CD-ROM and ran Disk Ut and it kept saying things about thread errors and missing threads and problems in the catalog hierarchy. Finally, after 12 runs, it said the disk was okay. So I booted back up and it worked until I went to open Mail, when it froze. Once again, I held down the power button and now it won't boot at all unless from the CD and I can't get the CD out. I keep trying to re-install Leopard, but it says it can't, that there's an error. I've tried erasing the disk and still no luck.
sigh Any suggestions?

If you have a dead HD, there are options:
Take it to the local Columbus Ohio, Apple Service Provider and have them install a new drive:

  • Nothing is working as far as me fixing my computer I think I should just reinstall with the disk. Suggestions?

I think I should just reinstall everything nothing works how do I do iy?

Can you explain more what it is not working?
If OS X behaviour is completely wrong and near all apps do not work, you should consider the option of erasing the hard drive and reinstalling OS X. Make sure you have got a backup of your files.
To do it, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting up to start up in OS X Recovery. Then, open Disk Utility and erase Macintosh HD > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU2.html Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.

To add to what Stonerock has mentioned, you can either create Playlists in your iTunes Library, containing exactly what you want, and then Sync them to your iPod, or you can use the iPod Classic's On-The-Go feature.
Reading between the lines, I'm going to assume for now that you want to be able to create your preferred listening list while "out and about" - so not near your iTunes library. (You have posted in iPod Classic, after all.) You can do this with the On-The-Go Playlist.
Look in the Playlists menu on the iPod. It probably contains the Recently Added, Recently Played and other pre-made Playlists that you see in your iTunes Library. At the bottom of the Playlists list, is the On-The-Go showing 0 Songs. Scroll down to it and press the Select (centre) button. The screen will give you instruction on adding songs to the On-The-Go Playlist.
Basically, if you press-and-hold the Select (centre) button, while highlighting a song, the song title will blink as it is added to the On-The-Go Playlist. Try it, then go back to Playlists/On-The-Go and notice that it will now say 1 Song. (Note, you cannot add a "now playing" song to the On-The-Go Playlist.) Repeat this for every song you want to have in the list. You can also look in the Albums menu, highlight the album title and press-and-hold that to add the complete album to your On-The-Go Playlists with one press. So if you add the two albums to your On-The-Go Playlist, you can then listen to just those two albums.
To shuffle the songs, turn on Shuffle on your iPod. Either, go into Settings/Shuffle and press the Select button to toggle between Off/Songs/Albums, or on the Now Playing screen, press the Select button three times to reach the Shuffle option, where you use the scroll wheel to move between Off/Songs/Albums, press the Select button to activate it.
Having added songs to the On-The-Go Playlist, go into it and notice the list of songs and options to Save Playlist (New Playlist 1) or Clear Playlist. If you use Sync to manage your iPod (and that really is the best way by the way), the next Sync will transfer any unsaved On-The-Go and any New Playlist Xs that you have, back to your iTunes Library. You can even remove any song from the current On-The-Go Playlist by highlighting it (in the On-The-Go, obviously) and press-and-holding the Select button.
If you need assistance in creating a Playlist in your iTunes Library, please ask.

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here:   http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

  • I think the battery just blew up?

I had our office power book sitting on my desk, shut off, for a couple of weeks. It was sitting flat so this just happened as I picked it up. I think the battery blew up or something? the back panel where the battery is on the laptop busted off and warped. The panel busted open and the stuff inside is all hard and puffy. WHAT HAPPENED?

Hi, gumball. I too think your battery just blew up. Better get the Powerbook in for service right away.

  • Help! I think my hard drive just bit the dust

Hello all. Hopefully someone will be able to help me answer this so i can stop bashing my face against the keyboard.
My parents own a Macbook Pro 13" from about 6 years ago. They told me that one day they turned it on and all it would do is come to the grey loading screen with the apple logo and load and never reach the desktop. I put my snow leopard disk in, booted it from the disk to get to the disk utility options. I did a repair disk to see if it was corrupted and sure enough it was. I erased the partition they had on there to make a new one to start fresh. only problem is now i cant format the hard drive and create a new partition to install OS.

  • Which do you think; Windows 7: 32-bit / 64-bit, (plus unused RAM issues) is best for video editing?

    Hi there!
Just received delivery of a Lenovo G550 with the following spec:
    2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo,
    4GB (DDR3 - 1066Hz) RAM,
    500GB HDD
    NVIDIA GeForce G210M (512MB)
    Windows 7
The entire purpose for buying this laptop, was for video editing and it is the best spec I could find for my needs and budget.
    So what's the problem?
    1) Windows 7 is installed as 32-bit, not 64 bit. Why is this? I was given no choice in this decision.
    2) Only 2.96GB of that juicey RAM is being used by Windows 7. I need as much RAM as possible for video editing.
    3) Lenovo sent NO install disc. - When I eventually get a virus or my HDD fails, I have NO WAY to clean install the very product I have just purchased! (A laptop with Windows 7 OS).
    Considerations:
As I understand it (please comment if there are alternative views on this); The 64-bit architecture is only useful for compatible software which has been designed to run 64-bit.
The video editing software I use is "Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0"
The suggested problems with Windows 7 run as 64-bit include:
    * Possible lack of driver compatibility support.
    * Possibility of 32-bit programs running SLOWER in 64-bit environment, than their native 32-bit environment.
    * Higher running temperatures & processor cooling issues.
    * No performance gains for all other programs running as 32-bit (email, internet browser, etc).
The suggested advantages with Windows 7 run as 64-bit could be:
    * Full utilisation of the 4GB RAM. (Presently limited to 2.96GB)
    * Faster rendering and video editing tasks in 64-bit environment.
    Questions:
    4) How can I get an install disc for Windows 7? Shouldn't this come with the computer?
    5) Do you think the potential hassle and architecture conflicts are worth suffering, to get the reported performance gains of 64-bit architecture and the remaining unused RAM?
Thank you for any help and advice!

contact lenovo support line for windows 7 dvds, but make sure if they send recovery dvds instead of windows 7 dvd.
most of people are having trouble with installing windows and drivers, so companies has found as this as solution to send recovery dvd -if asked- or using hidden partition to recovery system - like one key recover - instead of.
but if you ask me, they need to send dvds.
i'll contact the mods and admins about this issue, please stay connected to this post.

  • Thinking of BT Vision - Bit of help please

Just joined BT for broadband, due to go live on Friday. Have also been offered Vision however my Sky contract isn't up until 22 May. However, if I can get a good deal I don't mind overlaping the two for a month.
I have been doing a bit of research into BT Vision to see if it fits my needs. I am finding myself watching the same old channels and same old programs on sky. I tend to record most of my TV now and very rarely watch 'live', so I think the on demand aspect of BT Vision would suit me perfectly.
My main feature would be Sport and more specifically football.
Both sky sports 1 & 2 channels are on different media. Virgin, BT Vision and now top up tv freeview.
My question is does anyone know where the majority of football games will be shown next season? Will it be on Sky sports 1 & 2 or will they move it over to 3 and 4 so that people on other media cannot watch without subscribing to Sky?
At the moment majority of games are 1 and 2 with the odd game on 3 and 4.
This will have an impact on wether I chose BT or not. Mainly interest in premier league, but would like as much football as possible. I also like the idea of the fee ESPN as well, which would save £10 per month compaired to Sky.
Any other tips anyone can give before making the switch?
Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I don't think anyone will be able to tell you what Sky plan to do with football.
TBH if Sport is the main reason for watching TV you should stick with Sky.

  • HELP! I think my MBP just died!

I was working with a few apps open (Safari, Mail and Final Cut Pro, I believe), got distracted and when I turned back to my MBP I couldn't find the mouse pointer anywhere and the computer didn't respond to anything I did on the keyboard - including 'force quit'.
I've had a few crashes in my day, so I did what I believed the only option. I held the power key down until the computer shut off completely, waited a bit and rebooted. I expected a longer startup as the computer recovered, but it never fully came on. The keyboard backlight came on, but it seemed to get hung up there - the screen was totally blank. Eventually I tried it over again and now the only indication that it's even on is a little fan noise, the light on the latch button and extreme heat coming from the bottom (center on the screen side).
    I AM FREAKING OUT!
I don't know where to begin trouble shooting when the screen is black.
At the time of the crash it was hooked up to the power supply, a 30" Cinema Display (daisy chained to a USB printer and a firewire external drive), an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, Monsoon speakers and a firewire 800 drive. Now it's hooked up to nothing and the results are the same.
It hasn't moved off my desk in a couple months and I can't think of anything strange that I may have installed lately.
It's a few hours until AppleCare shows up for work. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kenny

OK...the first question is just how far your computer gets while starting up. Do you hear the normal Mac startup sound? If so, then try to reset the PRAM. You do this by holding down AppleOption+PR and waiting to hear the Apple startup again. If this doesn't happen...try taking out the battery and totally unplugging the mac. If you need any more advice or some online support, email me...I'll be up for a while.

  • Seeing all these little problems, I think I might just return my new MacBook...

I'm a heavy PC user switching over to Mac because of all the hype and positive comments I've heard from others, but seeing all these little problems everyone is having doesn't motivate me to continue.
Few days after I got my MacBook (somewhere else) I took it with me to a Mac Store in the mall. I was excited until I was basically told I wasn't worthy because I got it somewhere else. That made me feel really good. I think I'd rather my PC; I'm just not seeing the real benefits to sinking two grand down on something I could easily get for a fifth of that.
Anyone want to help with my baptism into the world of Mac?

I am being careful not to stub my toes since this is only my sixth day with my newly-entered Mac experience. I like the MacBook so far. I suppose most of my issues are geared towards being a new Mac user, but I am sure functional issues are yet to arise and surprise. I haven't seen many, if any, functional problems yet, probably because I don't know what to look for and Mac is new to me.
I have everything up and running, i.e. emails, internet, etc. I upgraded to Lion (was told I wouldn't have to pay for the upgrade, but I did because I couldn't find the way around the payment button).
I have been through many a PC over the past 15 years and know what I know in terms of programs and their tools, at least the ones I use. Familiar story, perhaps? With Mac it seems I have to relearn everything, as I will explain a little more below. I like having a number pad and both delete and backspace keys. Many of the programs, applications, downloads and software I run on my PC are either not compatible with Mac (and a wheel-less mouse) or they are just not the same in terms of set up and use. For instance, in PC, Firefox allows me to close the program and reopen all my tabs when I come back. Not so in Firefox with Mac, or at least I didn't find that option.
The most improtant factors for my dicision to Mac-Up were primarily
    1. The security
    2. The speed
    3. Creative aid programs
Example- With the PC programs I have used, I was able to simply play and learn. Not so thus far with some of the I-stuff. The tools I know and use everyday with PC programs are there, I just don't know where to look to find them or what they are called.
Example- How do I shutdown a program that doesn't want to shutdown? Searching help to "force shutdown" doesn't produce any solid results.
I went to the store where I purchased my MacBook. While there, another customer was asking about features. I rested my attention over the Mac instructor's shoulder to listen and learn (and a lot I did learn), but I realized that of all the things I was doing with my PC programs, despite having the ability to do the same with Mac programs, they were all called something different and/or used a little bit differently. For example, in MS Pub, its a Transparency tool; in Pages its an alpha tool. Stuff like that. For me, little stuff like that can really eat up a lot of time. It would be different if I was just starting my computer journey, but such is not the case.

  • I think I have just about had it!

I am having a QuickTime "stuttering" problem with a 640x480 M4P video I recorded using my Neuros MPEG R2. It plays flawlessly in Realplayer. As so many in this forum have attested, this is a common problem in QT7 under Tiger. Why has this not been addressed? I actually paid money for QT Pro as well, though for what I am not sure.
As a recent convert to the "Mac Side" I have been, by and large, quite satisfied with most of my Mac experience, (other than this problem and my PB audio input failure).
I bought a Mini, love it, bought a G4 PB15", love it and now am hungering for a MacBook and a Nano.
No More! Until I see APPLE act like more of a responsible company than MicroCrud, I will save my money and frustration. I have AppleCare on all my Apple products and have not gotten one iota of help or satisfaction from this (so far) useless "Customer Care" service.
And the "so called" fixes for this stuttering problem are a joke, the "Mac Experience" is supposed to relieve us from the "fixes" rebooting, re-installing, idiot mentality of Windows software and hardware. If I wanted to be a geek/hacker I would have gone with Linux, at least there you have 500,000 programming geekoids trying to help.
It appears that Apple and Mr Jobs just want to act like their products are trouble free and ignore the obvious problems that mar the experience. Customer satisfaction will carry more weight in the long run, than the "Cool Factor". Guys like me who have waited so long to come over expect a better experience than I am having. I will not wait forever.

I use NO third party plug-ins or add-ons. The recorder is used is in its own box with no connection to the Mac. It is like a stand alone VCR/Player.
Not familiar with the unit, so I had to read up on it a bit. As I understand it, this is an "all-in-one" capture device, digitizer, and converter. So, to some extent, there is a "third party plug-in" involed as far as the AVC/H.264 codec implementation is concerned. Is it the source of your prolem? I don't know. But it does make me wonder if the problem can be duplicated. Have you considered posting a sample file that is giving you problems to a server and then seeing if other QT 7 users have the same problem? The idea here should be to fix the problem -- not the blame.
I took the file out (on a CF module), copy it into the Mac and with QuickTime, it stutters. Play it in RealPlayer it doesn't. I have had RealPlayer on the PB since before the QT7x upgrade, never had a problem before.
Like the man said, "If it hurts your arm to lift it in the air, don't lift it in the air." If a file created by one third party works on the player created by another third party company and QT no longer works, then either don't use QT or fix the problem by reverting to the older QT version that does work.
From the "For What It's Worth" department: Purchased an external HDD some years ago specifically for video capture based on a MacWorld product review. Spent the next month arguing with both the manufacturer and Apple. According to one my G4 Ti PB was too slow for capture (even though I could capture video perfectly on a smaller, slower drive) and Apple, of course, said the problem was most certainly in the drive itself. Got tired of dealing with both and bought a second drive from a totally different manufacturer and my problem was solved. Should I now assume that all drives manufactured by the first manufacturer are sub-standard or should I assume it was just the luck of the draw? (FYI, both the laptop and the secondary drive are still "alive and well."

  • I think I've just messed too much with my install

    Hi
Recently, I have upgraded my system using the [testing] repo.
Then I wanted to downgrade, and as I read somewhere here on the board, the only way of doing so is to manually remove packages and reinstall them after removing [testing] from pacman.conf.
    So I did just this:
    pacman -Rd cairo cairomm camsource db dcron device-mapper dia digikam dmraid dosbox doxygen firefox gd ghostscript glib2 gnome-python-extras graphicsmagick graphviz gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-good-plugins gthumb gtk2 gzip imagemagick imlib2 initscripts inkscape jasper kdebase-runtime kdebase-workspace kdegraphics-gwenview kdegraphics-kamera kdegraphics-kcolorchooser kdegraphics-kgamma kdegraphics-kolourpaint kdegraphics-kruler kdegraphics-ksnapshot kdegraphics-libs kdegraphics-okular kdelibs kdelibs3 kfax kile kipi-plugins klibc klibc-extras klibc-module-init-tools klibc-udev lcms libcap libcups libdjvu libdrm libgphoto2 libjpeg libmng libpng librsvg libtiff libvncserver libwebkit libwmf lvm2 mdadm mjpegtools mplayer nano netcfg obex-data-server octave opencv openoffice-base-devel pciutils pcmciautils php php-apache php-cgi php-curl php-gd php-mcrypt php-pear php-sqlite php-xsl pilot-link plotutils pm-utils poppler poppler-glib poppler-qt povray pstoedit pyqt python-qscintilla qscintilla qt qt3 redland rrdtool sdl_image slim sqlite3 texlive-bin thunar thunderbird tightvnc udev util-linux-ng vigra vlc wireless-regdb wxgtk xawtv xf86-video-intel xfce4-notifyd xine-lib xulrunner xz-utils zvbi
Now pacman won't work, because of missing xz-utils, which is used by libarchive, which pacman itself depends on.
What to do to save my system?

    drcouzelis wrote:
I don't think it would be hard to use the Arch Linux install CD, do a live boot, "chroot", and then use pacman as usual.
I think that makes sense. Doesn't it?
Wouldn't it be the same problem then?
I mean, if you chroot to the install, xz-utils will still be missing. Or does pacman use the stick's binaries also from within chroot?

  • Umm....I think Apple TV just bricked my iMac :(

I was syncing my Apple TV for the first time to my iMac G5 when all of the sudden the Apple TV froze. I went to check the iMac, and found it to be tuned off. I thought that was pretty weird but just figured something odd had happened. I turned off the Apple TV and unplugged it from the network, then went and turned the iMac back on. It got up to the login window, then promptly turned itself right back off again. I'm starting to get a little worried at this point, so I change the power cord and try again. This time it let me log in, then died when the Finder loaded. I took it out of my surge protector and plugged it directly into a wall outlet. No change. I booted up in single user mode and ran fsck on it - the drive insists it's fine. I unplugged it and left it alone over night. This morning I got about 5 minutes out of it (enough time to get some recent data that I - like an idiot - hadn't backed up yet off) before it shut itself down once more.
So can anyone think of any way, shape or form Apple TV could have just killed my iMac? It's not even possible for it to have interacted with the power system management in OS X is it? If it had just hosed the hard drive inside the iMac why would it turn the power off? I thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas before the inventible visit to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider

It could just be a coincidence. Which model do you have how to identify your iMac? Have you tried resetting the PRAM?
Please post back, depending on your model you might be eligible for either of Apple'sRev A and Rev B repair extension.
