I think my ibook is totally screwed.....

ok, so first off, I'm going to sound like an idiot. I manage bands, not computers..... I envy whoever can answer this. So I was in the "get info" section of my hard drive and dropped down the ownership and permissions window and I think I accidentally left it on "no access" then when I closed that window, everything went away except for the dock, nothing would open so I restarted the computer. I get to the log in screen no problem, type in my password..... and then it just sits with a blank bluue screen. Also, I don't have any of my original cd'ss that came with the computer, but i do have my imac g5 cd's if that would do anything?...... so I guess I'm screwed????
Anyway, If anybody can figure this out, I will send you cd's t-shirts. you can check out the band @ www.myspace..com/scientistvswerewolf

Did you have a backup of everything on your iBook before this happened, perhaps on your iMac G5? Or are there files on the iBook that are not currently on the iMac? Depending on the answer, that presents two possible solutions.
First, you can't use your CDs from the iMac on the iBook; they're not compatible, so if you don't can't find the CDs for your iBook. you will need to buy a retail version of OS X 10.3 or 10.4, whichever you need or prefer.
If you can find the CDs for your iBook, you can use it to run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions; this may fix the problem. If not, assuming you have a backup of what's on the iBook or at least nothing you can't easily replace, you can do an Archive & Install, preserving Uses and Network settings. This will move everything currently on the iBook to a Previous System folder, which won't be usable anymore. If the files you need are in one of its sub folders, you can copy them over to your new install and then delete the Previous System folder.
Can't find the iBook CDs? Then you should try connecting your iBook and iMac in Target Disk Mode, and see if you can use Disk Utility to repair permissions on the iBook. In this case, the iBook is the Target.
In the future, don't change anything unless you understand the consequences of doing it, and have a backup plan just in case.
Hope this helps,
Mulder

  • Is it possible to download iOS  5 from one iMac and not get them totally wiped of apps and stuff. We have an iPad each and a communal email address and an iCloud address each. One iPad now is totally screwed up.

Is it possible to download iOS  5 from one iMac on two ipads and not get them totally wiped of apps and stuff. We have an iPad each and a communal email address and an iCloud address each. One iPad now is totally screwed up.

    Thank you for your reply.
I am somewhat new to iOS and OS having grown up with DOS and Windows. I am not familiar with IMAP and iCloud and I am not even sure which types of servers my various emails use.
The problem I would anticipate with iCloud is that (I assume) it would limit my access to data (including mail) on the iCloud to when I happen to be logged onto the internet. I also assume(?) that large files (photos etc.) would require some time to download whenever I wish to access them from whichever device I happen to be using (I hope I am wrong about this).
I have kept my devices to 500gb - 1TB for OS and 32gb - 128gb for iOS but since I have pretty slow WiFi (shared with DirecTV Whole Home and Netflix streaming) it is my impression that iCloud might be quite limited due to data transfer times.
Perhaps a factor would be that I have 2 DSL lines and my main DSL line is connected to two wireless routers (to also provide WiFi in a metal building that blocks WiFi and Cellular signals)
I may be totally wrong in my assumptions regarding iCloud. My mail is not so urgent that I need access to it instantly and I could wait until I had internet access or I can get it on my iPhone. My main concern with iCloud would be my data files (Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers etc.).
On the other hand, if I wanted to keep my 10,000 emails that would take up a lot of iCloud memory and I don't know how to measure how much storage it would take or how to move Hotmail or even iCloud mail to iCloud.
It may take me some time to figure this out.

It is Command+r or for the online internet system it is Command+option/Alt+r keys. Then you use Disk Utility to erase the macintosh partition, from the built in recovery hd, or you can repartition the drive as one partition from the online system.
To actually get to the online internet system you have to hold that key combo down until you see a globe on the screen. Otherwise it will just boot from the built in recovery hd on the internal drive.

I may have totally screwed myself but...after installing Yosemite without checking for potential problems with Adobe software, my CS4 Design Premium suite wouldn't open. So after consulting some forums, I deinstalled it, but I only have disks for my old CS3. When I got the CS4 upgrade I downloaded it, back in 2011... What can I do?? Everything was fine before I upgraded that *#$%* Yosemite.

  • This Verizon web settings for home phone is totally screwed up

I attempt to review/update my calling features.
From the main page (http://www22.verizon.com/ForYourHome/MyAccount/Protected/Overview/MyOverview.aspx), I do 'My Services' -> 'Home Phone' -> 'Home Phone Overview'. Then I click on 'Update Calling Features', and it comes up with
===== We are looking up your account information and checking for available services. This will only take a moment. =====
Then it shows some type of {please keep your posts courteous} order review. The web URL is https://www22.verizon.com/FORYOURHOME/GOFLOW/MyVerizonNew/ADDCHANGESERVICES.ASPX.
How screwed up is that? All I want to do is to review my calling features. This is totally screwed!

An update: This morning, I got a call from from Verizon support saying the problem had been fixed. I tried -- it wasn't fixed. So I gave tech support a call, I allowed them to remotely drive my PC so they could see for themselves that I still had the problem. After that, the tech support guy gave me a work-around for the problem; a new URL to bypass the verizon home page and go directly to the calling features settings. So, at least now, I can view/adjust the settings for my home phone. The tech support guy was helpful and at least now, I have a work around.

  • Mail V. 2.1.3 (753.1) acts totally weird, formatting totally screwed up

A few days ago I installed a Type 1 font (Helvetica Fractions) and it showed up unwanted in my mail.
So I disabled that font again and everything was good again. — A day later suddenly all mail settings were totally screwed up: The header takes half the screen (it looks like the fonts use a 500% line spacing); the interface graphics (blue bubbles, arrows etc. don't show); making the text larger or smaller acts weird (command+ makes it smaller, command- also, using the size panel 9pt makes it larger, 18pt and all others make it smaller); text lines are endless, images huge; copied and inserted text come as one word, has all blanks eliminated. — Tried all settings and preferences to no avail.
    What to do? Re-install? How?

1} Safe Boot (holding shift key down) didn't work at all. The little clock (circle, how do you call it?) kept rotating and rotating, the ventilator joined in pretty noisily, but nothing happened.
OK, then your Hard Disk is messed up, either let it go for several minutes or until it completes, or...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • ICS totally screwed up my phone

<Discussion moved from Android to DROID BIONIC by Motorola for more exposure.>
I need to know if there is anything I can do to fix my screwed up Bionic phone after the ICS update.  I think I already know there isn't anything, but I'll vent anyway in case I might help somebody else avoid accepting this update.  The upgrade downloaded about a week ago and at 7am in the morning when I noticed it, I'm not lucid enough to realize that I was potentially breaking my phone by accepting it.  I worked on Verizon phones at Motorola for 11 years and I know how crazy Verizon usually is about testing new phones but software upgrades are a different story...they never have enough people using "old" phones to really user-trial upgrades so most of the time the new software has more user issues than the old software even though it might fix some obscure issues that nobody cares about.  After about 5 hours stuck on "updating media", I finally had to pull the memory card because, you know, I actually have to use my phone once in a while and expect for $100/month, that I'd be able to do that all the time.  Anyway, the phone came back after the memory card pull, but now the battery drains completely in only a few hours (and I have an extended battery).  When I charge over night or any time, the phone never gets to more than 60% charge.  I think it's because of background apps running, but I've tried using Task killers to stop background apps and I tried removing all the task killers and either way it doesn't help.  I cannot open the gallery or any media players.  I can see my media files when I use a file manager, so I know that they are still there, but I can't see or play any of them.  There must be some engine changes in this software too because I swear the call processing is different.  I'm in 3G in places I used to get 4G and I completely loose service at least once a day now and have to perform a reboot (I used to get this once every few days unfortunately).  I know that as soon as I call Verizon, they will tell me a have to do a factory reset since that's their solution for everything that isn't a simple settings change.  I've already spent 3 hours trying to fix this thing and I can't believe I'm about to spend another 3 erasing all my data and setting it back up.  The biggest pain right now is that the USB interface appears to totally broken.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers on my PC, 3 different USB cables, Different USB ports, power cycling both devices and everything else I could think off...and I am pretty used to doing all this stuff after working on prototype phones at MOT.  Nothing worked and so I can't backup my phone data before I do the reset (my 16GB memory card doesn't have much space left).  I'll bite the bullet now and I guess I'll be buying an Iphone next time from AT&T because I will never buy an Android phone from Verizon again...I hold grudges for a LONG time.

The process may vary among phones, but on the Bionic:
    Power down phone
Hold volume up/down & power simultaneously
Use volume down to navigate to 'Recovery', use volume up to select
Should see screen with triangle and exclamation point next to an Android
    Press volume up/down simultaneously
Use volume rocker to navigate to 'wipe cache' and use power button to select
Once finished, use volume rocker to navigate to 'reboot system now' and use power button to select

  • I think my iBook G4 is dying...

I've had my iBook G4 for about a year and lately it's been getting real slow and every few weeks I get the blue screen of death for a few hours, but even before that my display has been going out randomly. Sometimes when I try to wake it from sleep it doesn't come back on, but the computer itself is on (I can hear the volume change, press the caps lock key and see it light up) and other times it just goes out while I'm using it. I'm no expert, but it seems like it could be a loose wire? Thoughts? Any way to fix it? Thanks!

    B,
yes, sometimes when I've moved it it's flickered and I think once or twice it's gone out
Most likely that's an inverter problem. If it is you should get it fixed. The problem usually occurs at the hinge point and if it shorts out (vs just opening up) it could blow a tiny SMT fuse on the logic board. Been there and fixed that but a pro is probably going to want to replace the cable and the logic board. $$.
are they something I could fix on my own
    Yes if you're experienced.
or would I have to have a pro do it and if so, expensive?
Not too at this point. Probably around $75 + parts (see iFixit for that cost) but maybe more in LA. Oh check w/ DT&T services:

    They're in Fremont, CA.

I was writing emails this morning when there was a "pop" and the house electric went out. When it came back on I could not start my iBook G4 again. I think it may be fried but I made an appt with the Genius Bar just for confirmation. I did not have a surge protector attached!! My fault!! Is there a re-set button somewhere I don't know about?

  • My keychain is totally screwed?!?!  Help!!!!

    Hi all...
My Keychain is totally 100% screwed up.  I've tried all the ways I know to fix it and get it back to where I can use it without a hundred boxes popping up on m screen ....   Can anyone offer any diehard or alternative ways to get it fixed?  Thanks in advance!!

Deleting the Keychain entirely is likely to fix the problem and may be the least time-consuming option. The consequence of deleting it will be that you will need to supply your credentials again for every service that requires them, but you only have to do that once.

  • Ibook not totally downloading just on iPads

    Hi all.
There's this one book I've purchased from the ibooks store that I can only read if connected to the internet. When off-line, it opens just to say something like "it's not totally downloaded, please download it again". I know the author, and the book has been formatted in Ibooks Author and is therefore "made for Ibooks". On my desktop Mac, that doesn't happens. And of course, I erased the book and re-downloaded several times...
    Any ideas?

    Hey andrevallejo,
If an iBook is not opening on your Mac, the first thing I would suggest is to make sure you have the latest version of OS X and iTunes installed.
    Then download the book again:
Download past purchases - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2519
Download previous purchases on Mac or PC
Make sure your Mac or PC meets these system requirements:
    iTunes 10.3 or later
You need iTunes 10.6 or later to download previously purchased movies and TV shows.
iTunes account in a country where iTunes in the Cloud is available
    iTunes Store
Open iTunes and go to the iTunes Store.
Click Purchased in the Quick Links section.
Select the content type that you want to download (Books).
Select Not in My Library to view purchased content that isn't on your computer.
Find the item that you want to download.
Click the Download  icon next to the item you want to download.
If an item is already in your library, the Download icon won't appear.
Make sure your computer is authorized using the Apple ID that you used for the original purchase.
Make sure your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, Mac, or PC is associated with your Apple ID.
If you can't find the item that you purchased in the iTunes Store, report a problem with the item. You can report a problem with a purchase made within the last 90 days.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Is there a "restore" feature, like windows has? I installed "CleanGenius" and it has totally screwed up my computer! I just want to go back home!! Thanks

I recently downloaded a trial version of CleanGenius from MacPromo..looked promising, but after I ran it, most of my oft visited sites are totally garbled or missing. Facebook, eBay, a local newpaper, etc all screwed up..unreadable. Is there a "restore" feature (like Windows system restore) that I can use so that all this will just seem like a bad dream? Hope so..thanks for your time. Dave

I then saw the above response from WZZZ whose advise to visit a web site that was so general as to be unhelpful.
First, you were posting in an older thread titled "Is there a restore feature....?"  Next, you had no idea what files your crapware program removed. The idea was to return your computer to the state it was in before you did the so called "cleaning." If you had bothered to look around that extremely detailed site, which you in ignorance describe as "being so general as to be unhelpful," you would easily have found 14. How do I restore my entire system?
    http://pondini.org/TM/14.html
And simply moving that program to the Trash wouldn't have restored the files it removed. And, it is also possible that parts of that program are still on your computer because it may have installed important or unimportant files elsewhere than in /Applications.
And Debbie and friends at Apple know nothing about Time Machine. It will restore your computer to the state it was in, minus any subsequently installed applications.
Besides, removing your crapware program wasn't your question. It was how do I restore my system to where it was before I allowed that program to run.
The notifications issue had nothing to do with your original question. It happened because of the way you initially set up your account here.
    So, thanks for your gratitude.

    Hi BostonMark,
I understand your angry, but you are not going about it the right way at all. You need to write letters to Apple's Management, you need to talk to Apple Reps, and you must write down everything they say.
About your response, you might want to reread the terms and conditions. You might want to rethink your next post.
Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Feedback about new feature requests or product enhancements are welcome too. Don't post non-constructive complaints, polls, or petitions.
    Just something to think about,
