I think my iphone should be without lock.. how to verify this?

Hello,
my brother bought an iphone 3G in a shop in Uzbekistan and as he was there for business he put a local SIM inside.
When he came back to Italy he tried his TIM sim and all was ok (it was a 3.0.2 fw version).
His 2 years son deleted the camera application for mistake and he asked advise to me.. ;-(
I found that I was not able to re-install it by app store or other.. probably it is inside the base os itself...
So I installed iTunes and connected the phone and I was suddenly proposed to update to 3.1.3 and so I did...
But at reboot I got the infamous pin error about the uncorrect sim....
My son tells me that the iphones in Uzbekistan should come from Tahilandia and so NOT locked at carrier level.
So I presume I should not get this kind of error after upgrade.. Am I right?
And if I'm right how to check exactly if the phone comes from thailandia?

Stange we are: I don't understand why the first conclusion is always about a hack and it is not at all considered a possibility about a sw/fw bug in checking/upgrading...
I just completed a 20 minutes (paid ;-( support phone call (of which ten minutes waiting), where an Apple guy told me that a possible cause was different itunes languages/sim between the one used for activation and the latest one.
A possible solution:
- download and install iTunes from a Russian apple site (where to find....???)
- keep off the sim from the iphone
- put it in recovery mode and install the 3.1.3 fw
- insert the original sim when requested (I have it: it is a Russian MTS one, that seems a carrier who doesn't lock)
- activate
- power off the iphone
- insert the italian sim
- power on the iphone
Any comments/suggestions? In general about the operation and in particular about the itunes version/locale download

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

I updated today to the 5.0.1 and now when I try to sync to ITunes, it doesn't recognize my phone and an error message comes up saying that "This iPhone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started.' What does this mean? Never mind - I found an article in the Support about this very thing! Thanks!

What brand/model USB drive? Is it bus or AC powered?
On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Same for me with Iphone 5 and IOS 7 on mac pro. Install ITunes 11.1 and after reboot nothing work. Work only with Mac Pro in safe mode.

You cannot track with the imei number it is not possible. The only way to track is to install find my phone and have that turned on and then you can track the phone on icloud.com but only if the phone is on and has internet

Turn off iMessage on the old iPhone.
Restore the iPhone as new.
Have the other iPhone users delete the current message thread, and start a new messae to you.
Have the other iPhone users delete your contact, then re-add it.
Go to ww.icloud.com and remove the device from your Find My iPhone.
Go to appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and/or password.
Contact Apple Support at getsupport.apple.com for further assistance if these steps don't work.
Wait about 30 days for the iMessage server to self-correct the issue.

Repairing an AUS iphone in USA without lock

I have an Iphone 3GS 32gb that is from Australia (Optus) but I use it in the U.S with t-mobile. I need to get it repaired because the silent button stopped working (minor but annoying) and the battery lasts for 6 hours. The apple store employees, optus and att tell me different things. The main problem is I might get an att replacement and that is unacceptable to me. I already paid $2000 or so to Optus to get an unlocked iphone and plan usage.
Any clues on how I can get my replacement iphone without it being locked to ATT ?
I am not going to use ATT under any circumstances, it is too pricy for a notorioiusly bad service.

They don't sell unlocked 3Gs iPhones. They sell the iPhone 4 unlocked online and eventually at Apple Stores. You can order one online for $649/$749. Then you can pay for your 3G data plan on T-Mobile and get EDGE speeds.
They will not be able to replace your unlocked 3Gs with an unlocked one in this country. You could send it to someone in Australia and have them do an out-of-warranty replacement or take it to a 3rd party repair site and have them fix it. Either find one locally or you can try http://www.iresq.com or http://www.drcellphone.com or use Google to find many others.

I'm not sure if I set up Find My iPhone. It is showing up in Find my iPhone, but as offline. Would it show up if I never set it up? Or does this mean its probably been turned off. I last had it within wifi and data should be turned on as well.

If offline, that means Find My Phone was setup/activated. One of the first things a thief will do is turn an iPhone off, thus defeating Find My Phone.

Did you try holding the power button and home button until the apple logo appears?
Are you able to connect to itunes? If you can, back it up and restore.
If nothing else, take it to the apple store and have the genius look at it. If they can't resolve it then they will likely to replace your phone.
