I think my kernel is corrupted

The startup screen comes up and the grey apple popped up, but no spinning gear. Apparently this is supposed to mean my kernel is corrupted. Is there a way to fix the kernel. I cant startup my computer (it says at the grey apple, with whirring noises from inside the computer)
I tried booting in safe mode but that didnt work. and i tried disk utility, but it freezes when trying to repair... here's what I believe happened to cause this problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3126055
Am I just supposed to reformat my computer(aka erase everything on the macintosh HD)?
thank god i have backups

Try the following (the Safe Mode portion you already did) -Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer:
Step 1: Restart into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key during startup. The comp will run a complete & lengthy file systtem check, then start up w/only the required kerenel extensions & w/o running any Startup items tthat you installed.
If you are running OS 10.4 it will also perform some font finagling.
Try starting up normally again. If you are still stalling, restart in Safe Mode & move on to Step 2...........
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Step 2: Open Library>Startup items folder-the root level Library, not the one in your user name folder.
Look for potentially problematic 3rd party items such as virus scanning software components, etc. Remove 1 or more items to a location outside the Library folder, such as the Desktop, then restart normally & see if your Mac stalls. It it does, try removing all the items in the Startup items folder & restart. If all’s now well, place the items back into the Startup items folder 1 by 1, restarting each time you put one back. If and/or when the stall resurfaces, you just identified the faulty component.
If the above does not work, then it’s time to move on to Step 3.................
Step 3: WARNING-This step can be tedious-removing .plist files from the /Library/Preferences folder.
Remove the entire Preferences folder from the Library folder on your startup drive then place the files back 1 by 1 until you see the problem return. *The Mac will automatically create a new Preferences folder in the Library folder*
Alternatively, you can take half of the items out (all non-Apple .plist file, for example), restart to see if your Mac stalls, then move to a smaller set of items, repeatingn the process until the culprit is found.
Please post back your results.

  • ITunes sometimes 'thinks' the iPod is corrupted

iTunes sometimes thinks the iPod is corrupted. But it only thinks so if I connect the iPod WHILE itunes is running. If I connect the iPod and then start iTunes there isn't a problem. Or if the message below appears I can click OK.. stop itunes, restart itunes and then iTunes can see the the iPod just fine.

I've tried reformatting the iPod - same thing. I've also flushed my OS installation out.. reinstalled OS X from scratch.. and the problem went away... until today. Now the problem is back.
Any thoughts on how to determine what the root cause might be, or how to diagnose it?

I am having the same problem with my old iPod. I just bought a new iPod an hour ago and same thing.
    Help anybody?

  • Kernel panic - corrupt stack

My iBook g4 has a kernel panic (below text).
It did a '3 beeb, flash light 5 times' crash last week but then re-booted fine. About 4 months ago, this happened repeatedly and the 'power down now' error message appeared on a black screen. Finally it refused to boot up at all and we took it apart and found a loose connection inside (I don't know what it was), reattached it and it has worked fine since.
Am worried as I have stupidly not backed up recently and have a website on there that is due to posted. Please help!

First, sorry for the delay, I only work a few days a week
Second, there is no panic.log on any of the machines. I looked in the console and system profiler programs in all the directories and searched in terminal using 'find / -name panic.log 2> /dev/null'. That is one reason I had to take a picture of it. I will try hard to get a panic.log.
Keep in mind that these are very hard lockups so I am wondering if the kernel even CAN sync the log to disk in this situation. However, I come from the Linux world and am fairly new to Macs so perhaps I am expecting it to be a hardware problem when software really can make a Mac Kernel lockup.
Furthermore they are networked together, we use LDAP/NFS home directories but each machine was prepared with it's own local copy of CS2. There is no sharing of the application.
Also, i tried a boot with apple-v but all went well and there were no out of place message.
Since my first posting I have also tried an fsck which revealed nothing but a clean FS.
Also, we do use radmind to help clone machines. The OS was installed manually with our application loaded using radmind templates.
We do use our Macs very heavily and use many applications at once using all RAM and heavy swap. Do the Mac Minis not like to be exercised hard? I think I may try to use a 1GB stick in a machine and see if that helps.
Also, could CS2 really cause a complete lockup of the machine with a corrupt stack? To me an application-level program should never cause the machine to freeze or should never be able to corrupt memory it doesnt own unless the OS lets it meddle with hardware.

  • I think Finder has been corrupted.

I can't remember exactly when it started, at first, it was spotlight:
While spotlight from the menubar seemed to work, using the find feature would cause it to crash.
And then, when I used the "Get Info" option when right clicking on files, it work fine untill I closed it, and then Finder crashed.
I lived with this for a while, and I hoped the new Mac OS X update that was going to come out some time might fix it.
    I was wrong.
But recently, only a week or so ago, Finder lost it's icon.
I quickly checked in the CoreServices folder to check if it was just a Dock problem, it wasn't, Finder had no icon, but when checking in the package, the icon was still there.
Here's a picture to give you can idea... http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/3272/picture6wju.png
I knew that is was definitely getting serious, Finder seemed to be getting eaten away by something.
And today, I just noticed that I couldn't empty the trash, not only that, I couldn't even open it!
So for now, I'm emptying the trash using other means...
Also, in "About Finder", there is no version number, it's just "Finder version".
Now, how would I go about fixing this?
Finder itself seems to be broken, and I don't know where my Mac OS X discs have gone.
Is there any way I could somehow get somebody else to send me a Finder application that isn't broken?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Do you think if I got someone else with Mac OS X 10.5.7 to send me an uncorrupted version of Finder and I replaced it, it would work?
Highly unlikely. There are literally thousands of files that work together in ways that are set up with preferences during installation. Permissions are only a piece of the puzzle. You may not even have your system files in sync due to updating corrupt files. If you've truly got a scrambled system you need to get a Leopard Install DVD, re-install Leopard using Archive and Install, update to OS 10.5.7, repair permissions and get by butcher jobs on your OS.
Never update a broken system. Fix it first. Updates can fix some bugs, and add improvements to a good working system. Updating corruption means updated problems.

  • Kernel Panics: Corrupt Skip Lists

I recently upgraded my eMac's hard drive to a 160 GB hard drive. Before my eMac was very stable. I experienced maybe one or two kernel panics before upgrading. Now, they are a frequent experience. The curious thing is that all report the same error- "Corrupt Skip Lists". Yet, I cannot find any reference to this error anywhere. Also, I was running Panther before upgrading and switched to Tiger after installing the new drive. I suppose this could also be a factor. The odd thing is that these occur even when it's not running (has booted) off the new internal drive sometimes.
Here are some screen shots I've taken:
    http://gamoe.net/imagebank/Other/eMacError/KernelPanic1.jpg
    http://gamoe.net/imagebank/Other/eMacError/KernelPanic2.jpg
    Any clues on this?

Interesting. A topic probably only for the more technically minded. Thank you for your response. I hadn't gotten any leads until now, even though I've posted about this elsewhere. Of course I added more RAM, it's the only decent thing to do, given Apple's traditional skimping on built-in/included RAM.
So I did as you suggested. I dug up the Apple Hardware Test CD, but it came up with nothing. I then downloaded and ran Memtest in the suggested single user mode under root. I had no idea it would take as long as it did, though I should have known, as it is an thorough test. I used the default suggested 3 passes. Results are as follows.
    Test 1 gave me:
    Bit Flip: FAILURE: 0xfffff3ff != 0xfffff7ff at offset 0x02c53b8b.
    Test 3 gave me:
Stuck Address: FAILURE: possible bad address line at offset 0x00e52b8b.
    Resulting in these conclusions:
    * Address Test Failed * One or more DIMM address lines are non-functional.
    * Memory Test Failed * Please check logfile for details.
Actually, I really have had no way of knowing if it was the hard drive or not. When I upgraded I also switched to Tiger, so it could be either. I must say that I am more a little surprised at the results, given that I installed this memory almost immediately after I bought the eMac, and it is Crucial RAM, which is known for quality, and it is the same RAM Apple uses for Macs. I've had absolutely no problems like this in the two years plus I've been using my eMac, under different versions of Mac OS X.
Given these results, can one reasonably conclude that the memory is responsible for the kernel panics? And, provided that the eMac has panicked even when it has not been booted up from the new internal drive, would you completely rule out the internal hard drive as the cause?-- Or can there be more to this?

  • Help: Think my bridge is corrupting images

    Hello,
I'm having problems with Adobe Bridge CS5 to view images that were formerlybeing displayed normally.
Some of the images I download now also have problems in viewing.
The format ofof the images is always in Camera Raw 2 ( CR2).
I work with two Cannon. A 1-Ds Mark III and 5D Mark II and I'm sure the problem is not the equipment.
Sending a screen shot of the Bridge for you to understand better what happens.
    Need Help. Thanks.

First of all, Bridge is not changing the file, only metadata if you make changes to them. You could try to use the option to purge the cache for that file (click on the file and with right mouse click choose purge cache for selection from the pop up menu) but to me it seems as a really corrupted file and if you have more it could be also due to your disk (check also your permissions and the disk itself using the Apple Disk Utility

  • I think bookmark file is corrupt and I want to fix it due to lack of backup. Firefox keeps freezing when I use current bookmarks

For some reason, my Firefox browser keeps crashing every time I try to go to another site besides my homepage. I have tried creating new profiles, checking my extensions, refreshing my copy of Firefox, reinstalling, etc. The only common thread is that I copy over the "places" files from my old profile so I don;'t lose all my bookmarks. Finally, I reinstalled Firefox and built a new profile from scratch without moving the "places" files. I have a bookmark file .html backup from when the trouble began; my last backup was 1 year old. Importing this file seems to reintroduce the problem, so I am assuming the file is corrupt. Is there any way to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair corrupted .html bookmark files or the "places" files in my profile?

There are usually no problems to be expected when you import an HTML backup.
It is usually better not to use the places.sqlite file as that is a much more likely cause of issues.
If you have JSON backups (.json or compressed .jsonlz4) then you can try to use these to restore the bookmarks.
There might be incompatibilities with a JSON backup of older Firefox versions.
You can check for problems with the <b>places.sqlite</b> database file in the Firefox profile folder.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
    *Places Maintenance: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
To recover from a corrupted places.sqlite you can remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup (bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.json) in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Note that the file name of an automatic JSON backup includes a total item count (folders and separators are included).

  • I think my FLA is corrupt

I threw together a fla to spike some code. At some point, it's lost it's fidelity. It was telling me I couldn't debug the file because it didn't contain AS3. It did.
Then, I found that there was an extra dot in my code, which was not caught during auto-format or syntax checking. I removed the extra dot, and then I started to notice bugs. I got runtime errors that a var was 21, when it is clearly set to 22. I also changed the datatype of a Vector to an Array and all of a sudden the compiler acts as if the array doesn't exist.
Like I said, I was just spiking some code, and could have made some errors in there somewhere, but this is getting out of hand.
[Update: I can't upload an FLA to the official Flash support site. That's about par for the course guys.]
    http://kevinsuttle.com/public/Buggy.fla

There are many, many, things wrong with your code.
    1. You named your desk objects desk_1 through desk_22, and then in your for loop, you only add the first 21 of them. While your naming starts with _1, an array in Actionscript starts counting at 0. So your for loop should have been:
    for(var i:int = 1; i <= studentDeskNum; i++)
    2. This if condition, if(i == studentDeskNum) is completely unnecessary.
    3. You are calling the function, initMovableItems(); twice, once in the initRoom() function and again at the end of the pushMovableItems() function. The second is correct, as far as I can tell.
    4. In the initMoveableItems() function you are iterating through 31 items and trying to set a scaleX and scaleY property value based values that are in an array, aScaleFactors. There are only 9 values in this array, and so the iteration fails after the last value is used.
There is probably much, much, more.

  • I think my user name area is corrupt what can I do?

I had to call Microsoft because I was having trouble with my Office for Mac.  He could not resolve the issue under my user name.  When a new user was set up it worked fine under that user.  He said he thinks my user is corrupt.  How do I either a) fix it or; b) transfer my important stuff, but not the corruption and create another user then get rid of this one?

Downloaded files distributed via torrents very frequently contain malware. It is not possible for anyone on this support site to provide you absolute assurance that your Mac has not been affected by malicious software. Also, there is no product that can examine your Mac and selectively delete potentially malicious software.
Therefore, I can only recommend that you erase your Mac completely and reconfigure it from the ground up. If you created a backup prior to installing and using the torrent software, now is the time to use it.

  • GRUB corrupted after custom kernel build

    Hi
I have developed my ARCH installation for development purpose.
I am new to linux kernel development.
I compiled the kernel and placed the kernel image in the /boot folder and modified grub.cfg to point at it.
After that I selected my arch installation and it didnt succesfully boot the manually compiled kernel.
Then I rebooted and selected the arch-fallback and it booted succesfully.
After that the book I am referring to suggested to use the 'make modules_install' to load modules and then I rebooted.
After that grub is giving me a "minimum bash like interface"
How can I boot the machine from this interface. (if i can)?
Also i tried to reinstall grub (from an ubuntu live disk) but it said it couldnt' find /boot/grub
Re-installing grub from an Arch live disk was succesful but it didn't fix the problem
    Please Help
    Thanks in advance!

I think you are missing a driver that you need to boot.  Is your kernel still using the initrd, or did you build in all of the modules you need in order to boot?
If you are depending on the initrd to provide modules during boot, then the modules burned into that initrd need to be compatible with your custom kernel -and- (I think) the kernel has to have the same name as the stock kernel.
When I build a custom kernel, I usually do away with the initrd and build the required modules to boot into the kernel.  I only modularize those that I do not need everytime I boot; for example USB based device drivers.
To boot, you need your disk controller, the file systems drivers of the volumes to be mounted at boot, video hardware drivers, keyboard drivers, maybe some real time clock drivers, PCI Drivers, Maybe ISA and LPC bus drivers.
Take a look at this site.  The guy who runs it is legendary on the Gentoo forums, his site might provide some insight into how to configure your kernel.
tl;dr:  The problem is not Grub.
Edit: You may also want to look at the Gentoo Handbook.  Being Gentoo, they have some pretty good information on how to configure a kernel.

  • Kernel Task 350 % CPU usage...

Hey guys... ive a big problem with my macbook pro 13 eary 2011...
since yesterday evening its very very slow and my fans are allways at 100% fan speed...
my problem is that it start directly after the start...
i turn on my macbook and my fans go full power and my macbook is slown down...
    what did i try..
smc reset by clicking (left) + alt+ctrl+shift and powerbutton... nothing happened...
reinstalled my mac osx 10.7 (needed 3 hours for installation)
do u have some tips for me? i dont know anymore...
in the first moment ive watched series and then ... fans full speed and slowing down...

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to a buildup of dust on the logic board, to high ambient temperature, to a worn-out or faulty battery, or to the malfunction of a cooling fan or sensor. Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board.
The Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    Peripherals
According to at least one report, connecting an external display to a MacBook Pro via a Thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter may cause this issue. I can't confirm.
    Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.

  • Aperture corrupts images (and masters?)

Aperture has begun to corrupt my images.
It used to happen very rarely, but has become more common recently.
I do not think it is related to the update to version 2. It used to happen with v.1.5 as well.
The corruption begins to show up as lines through images as I am sorting them, but gets really bad when I edit images with adjustments. I have not been able to identify any rhyme or reason as to why some images corrupt and some do not. Sometimes it is just in the interface how Aperture displays the image and will correct if I close that image and go back to it, but often the image is no longer useable in Aperture. Sometimes the image will export or open in an external editor OK, but more often it will not be usable any longer. Usually if I export the master and reimport it, the problem is solved. However, recently I exported a master and reimported it and it continued to look as bad. I then tried opening the exported master in Adobe Camera Raw and I could not... it opened a black canvas. (the photo was nothing but black).
here is a link to see the corruption I am talking about:
    http://gallery.mac.com/solhill#100002
the first image is the original file, as exported before all this started. The second is how it shows up now.
To add a layer of complexity, or perhaps clarity, I have also had some odd computer behavior such as system crashes due to kernel panics.
I have run extensive hardware tests from both the startup disk that came with my Mac Pro and third party tests as well and nothing has come up as a hardware issue, but an Apple certified technician I know thinks the kernel panics may be caused by bad ram. So far I have not been able to identify any bad ram though.
As is, I will have to abandon Aperture for Lightroom as I cannot trust it anymore. It ruined a photo job and not only made me miss the deadline, but corrupted a number of the key photos!
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Paul,
I copied a few of the logs from after crashes to email to an Apple certified technician I know. Here is the log from the last time it crashed... it is gibberish to me, but maybe you can make heads or tails of it:

  • Kernel Panic on Mounting volume read and write

First I installed Windows with Boot Camp and Windows, than installed Parallels for the Mac, and it booted windows. As it was configuring Windows to be used with Parallels it froze the machine, and the only choice I had was to reboot the system by holding down the power button.
Now, each time I boot it up Darwin panics. After a call to apple support, I booted it into single user mode, and checked with fsck and it said it was fine. I than tried rebooted it and got the verbose message, and it happened when it attempted to mount the disk.
I went Back into single user mode. I tried to remount the partition read/write and it caused a panic. I think the partition is corrupt and I was wondering what I can do since it does the same thing on the install disk. Are there any Apple or open source solutions that may help me fix this disk?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you try to boot from the OS X Installer Disc and the computer panics then the problem is more likely hardware related.
You might try getting to the diagnostics: Insert the OS X Installer Disc One into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics.
If you are unable to do even this without a kernel panic then take the computer in for repair.

  • [kernel] gensplash framebuffer boot splash screens for 2.6.x

    coming very, very soon....
if you haven't already, patch a kernel for fbsplash.  i've got 2.6.10 with -nitro2 running just fine, you can grab my PKGBUILD and the patch here - start with the usual Arch config.
i have a complete splashutils PKGBUILD with added extras including scripts and sample configs. PLUS I have created initscripts patches for fbsplash and fbsplash/bkgdDaemon combined...and yes, i do have the silent progress bar working...
    MWAHAHAHAHA - it's alive!

After much blood, sweat and tears (not too mention annoying comments from my girlfriend) I have finally managed to patch initscripts to work with silent gensplash! Better late than never, eh?  I had some major headaches with this but I wanted to save it till it was completely ready.
So, here's the deal and the files - all stored here http://dtw.jiwe.org/share/gensplash
with a whole bunch of gensplash showcase pics here
First you need a patched kernel - I am using 2.6.10 and nitro2 - it works great - see the wiki on how to do that.  I have a PKGBUILD and patch file on my server too.
Then you need a splashutils package - there are several about on the forums but I hope mine will provide everything you might need.  Splashutils needs to link to your patched kernel source when you build it - so my PKGBUILD allows this.  The PKGBUILD also uses a pack i put together containing some handy bits for gensplash.  This includes examples for lilo and grub, a splash rc.d script to start the backgrounds on the virtual terminals (and a config file to support this), and it includes three themes: the ArchPool theme, ArchMetal (created by me but credit to the Arch wallpaper author tho!) and the emergence gentoo theme (which is a bit crap to be honest).
You can use the PKGBUILD and the gensplash-files pack to build splashutils.
Pre-built packages of both splashutils, initscripts-custom and initscripts-gensplash (see below) are in my repo – they should work perfectly but YMMV!
When you install splashutils you should get a handy introduction from the install script.
If you want to use silent splash you'll also need to patch your initscripts.  You can use splashutils quite happily to add a verbose boot screen and vc backgrounds if you don't want to mess with your initscripts.  I have a neat PKGBUILD which will grab and patch the latest initscripts from the current repo if you do - this one is for initscripts-gensplash

    patch -Np1 -i $startdir/src/initscripts-gensplash.diff
If you do want silent splash (you do – that's what all this work is for) i have 2 patches for this - the first simply patches for gensplash (initscripts-gensplash), the second patches for gensplash and the bkgdDaemons patch (combo-plus).  The old initscripts-bootsplash patch is there for completeness and reference too
The patched initscripts allow you to run silent bootsplash and drop to verbose should errors (fails) occur.  This can be overridden by an option has been added to rc.conf – however, it will ALWAYS drop to verbose if the fs check fails – at least it should – I don't know how to test that.
As I said the drop option has currently been added to rc.conf but the alternative is to use the conf.d/splash config file from the splashutil pkg (which is already set up to allow this).  I would like feedback on this, for and against, whether you intend to us the package or not.  Here is the way I see it:
    FOR using rc.conf
You control the majority of boot options from rc.conf – this is a boot option
rc.conf is already sourced by the scripts by default
rc.conf is part of the initscripts package
    AGAINST rc.conf
It is the main config file – do we want to pollute it with extraneous commands for eye candy?
    FOR using conf.d/splash
It's not rc.conf – it is a gensplash related option in a dedicated gensplash config file
    AGAINST using conf.d/splash
This file is not actually used for any config options that relate to boot (except to pre-empt a switch ), only for setting backgrounds on virtual consoles
This file is not part of the initscripts package – although my initscripts obviously depend on apps in splashutils (won't work without it) – cross dependent configs seem dodgy.
We have to source an extra file in the scripts
I have also separately packaged the ArchPool and ArchMetal themes but I will have to upload them later because I forgot them today
    Problems and Bugs
I am having MAJOR problems with the splash rc.d script.  It uses the conf.d/splash config file fine but i still CANNOT get it to work at boot BEFORE i log in - it works fine after - ideas PLEASE!
It now also seems to cause similar overlay problems to that are described in bug 2 below – with SOME themes you get a persistent progress bar on your vc after the boot process is finished and it seems to affect different themes depending on when you run the script in your daemons array – am baffled – it needs serious work! Bug 2 and this maybe related...more testing needed!
Last but not least - the bkgdDaemons patch.  If we background a daemon how do we know if it failed or not?  Has anyone thought of that?  My initscripts consider a background daemon BKGD to be DONE for the purposes of displaying the progress bar although the bkgdDaemons patch functionality remains identical and BKGD still shows in verbose.  If a BKGD daemon fails, this maybe as late as after login for DHCP failures, for example, we'll never know until we try to use the network.
    Bugs
    1. When udev starts you get message saying can't open /dev/fb0 and /dev/fbsplash for reading – no apparent ill effects tho? [FIXED]
    2. If you switch to verbose with F2 at a very specific point – during the fs check I think – the background MIGHT corrupt a tiny bit as the verbose overlays the silent (correctly) but then when the fs check finishes I think it still thinks it is in silent mode (due to the mode being passed to it when it starts to execute) and overlays silent again – only for the next rc script to overlay verbose (again correctly).  It's hardly terrible but someone might like to have a look – I can't be bothered right now as there is very little need to switch to verbose with F2 (cos it does it automatically on errors) and you do have to do it at just the right second to get the problem!  Feel free to check it out tho.
    TODO:
    1) workaround the current symlink workaround – DONE (don't ask it was awful)
    2) figure out how to drop out of silent if errors occur at startup - DONE
    3) fix that f**king rc.d script – - SOMETIMES WORKS SOMETIMES NOT -SETTING IT AS THE LAST DAEMON SEEMS TO HELP
    4) investigate the bugs - DONE
    5) enable silent splash in ArchMetal – DONE
    6) make lots of nice gensplash screens for Arch! – EVERYONE!
