I think my laptop crashed. what are the signs of overheating?

I was just on my laptop, and suddenly the screen went black. Not fully black though, greyish. I waited for a few minutes then diconnected the power. I reconnected it and switched it back on. The blue LED light for the power work however it is not doing anything as the light int flashing. This time the screen goes pitch-black. I turned it on and off but then the same happened. I think its overheated as it was charging.
Please help! I dont knw what to do. It might be a virus but I was planning on doing a full scan tomorrow because it takes 12hours.
It is a HP 2133 Netbook. I got it from school.

Halena,
I am sorry it's not working yet.  I am glad you have someone that can look at it.  If you've had problems with it, then it was probably just working itself up to the complete failure.  (Something to know for next time...)   I am glad you have called HP.  They may be able to help you pinpoint the failure.
When you take your notebook to the technicians at school, try to remember any error messages you saw and tell them kinds of problems you had.  It will help the techs to find the problem faster, so you can get your computer back sooner!
Good Luck!
Kind Regards,
Dragon-Fur

  • What are the signs of water damage to my macbook pro

my boyfriend set everything in the back of the truck, including my laptop, while he was cleaning out the inside. when finished he put everything back in the truck, and drove through a carwash. unfortunately, my laptop was in its black sleeve and blended in, getting left in the bed of the truck. it was in a protective sleeve and had a smartshell case on it. both are not the best protection though, especially against water. he claims the computer was dry when he took it out of everything but i dont see how thats possible. though i am currently using it, and i havent noticed any signs of damage, what are the chances the laptop has damage that will take effect later? its been a month already. but i dont want to open it one day and everythings erased or something. im only thinking about it again because every time i click an icon, it jumps to another desktop. thats only been happening today. are there any warning signs i can look for so i can fix it before it gets really bad?

Any anomalies should make you suspect that you suffered some type of water damage. Because liquid damage can take many routes, as corrosion begins to set it, you may not know that damage has occurred until strange things start happening with your system.
Probably the best thing you can do, since an anomaly has presented itself, is to take your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP for a free diagnosis. If they notice that the liquid sensors have been activated, they will let you know.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • What are the sign to look for if you think the macbkpro has water damage???

I had a small amoung of water soak throught my case, were the water reached the corner of the top side were the back of the computer is when it is open and want to know what the signs of water damage are so that I can look for them, only about 3/2.5 inches was with water of this corner. Would I have probelems right away if it was water damage????help please

"only about 3/2.5 inches was with water of this corner.?
How much is that in plain speak?
    Spill Cleaning
And, don't think that just because it was two teaspoons and not a glassful that there is a difference.
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.

  • What are the sign-in settings for Jabber?

Firstly, I do not have a business account with Cisco.
We have downloaded the desktop Jabber program.
I have now registered an account with Jabber and an account with Cisco.
When I open Jabber Video on the desktop, it asks for a username.
What is the Jabber username? The email sent to me from Jabber states: "Sign in with your email address or jabber email" - but this is not the username, because the program will not accept an @ sign in the username field.
I have tried the username that I signed up to Cisco with - this is not it either.
I see a notice stating "Connection rejected by server. Try logging in again"
On the Jabber start up screen, I see "Sign-in settings". When I open this window, all fields (Internal Server, External Server, SIP Domain) are blank. Why are they blank? Could this be the problem? Are the data for these fields to come from my side or from Cisco?
Unfortunately, Cisco tech support won't take my call because I do not have an account and therefore cannot set up a "Tech Support File".
    Appreciate all feedback.
    thanks

    Hi Stephen,
To login, the internal server should be: https://boot.ciscojabbervideo.com/endpoint/configuration
The external server and domain fields are blank.
Your username only needs the prefix of your @jabber.com video address.  For example, if your video address is [email protected] then your username is "stephen."
Unfortunately, there is only forum support for this free service.
    Regards,
    Jason

  • Airport extreme dying? What are the Signs?

I have a version 3 and I'm using it with Verizon FIOS. When everything is working well, I get 43MB down and 35MB up with my MacBook Pro. This only seems to happen after the first 20 minutes after restarting it, however. Then it slows considerably and my wife's iPad has trouble accessing the inernet altogether. Is it time for a new Airport Extreme base station? I am using the latest firmware. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I was wondering about bridge mode, because I had an issue before with my G4 AE and some home LAN broadcast flodding with AT&T Uverse.  I had to literally connect my AE to the Uverse gateway, which has igmp snooping enabled.  Not sure if this is your issue, but basically network igmp being sent over wireless will flood the wireless bandwidth.
You might try setting it to "router mode" and put your network connection on the WAN port just to test.

  • Laptop editing with Premiere Pro CS4: what are the most important specs

Laptop Editing: What are the MOST important specs?
Hello everybody, I have been a long time lurker, but I decided to join in and share my voice.
I've been editing, for a while now, various projects of various lenghts shot on my HV20, on an IMac using Adobe Premiere Pro. Actually, I bought the CS4 Extended Production Suite last year  thinking that it made sense to be able to edit, do the coloring and effects+ sound all within the same suite.
AND, it came with OnLocation, wich is, I think, a fantastic tool. I really want to be able to record and monitor my future shoots using OnLocation. I've seen how useful monitors and scopes are on set, and the idea of being able to shoot in HD and actually checking the focus on something larger than a few inches is very appealling!
So a laptop is in my future. Now, what are the most important specs?
    I could buy 1) a barely used Macbook pro early 08- 17" HD led display ,4g Ram ddr2 ,nvidia 8600M GT 512 VRAM ,800Mhz BUS, 200G 7200HD
and have enough money left to buy an Apple Display 30" refurb
    OR 2) a new Macbook pro 17, 4 g Ram ddr3, 512 VRAm, 4g Ram ddr3, double procsessors 9400M+9600M GT 512 VRAM, 1066 BUS, 500G 7200HD
and wait for a second display!
Plus, of course, a portable External Scratch Drive on the Express Card. Now, if that fast drive is handling the footage, could'nt I settle for a 5400HD in the laptop,, they seem much less prone to problems-clicking noise, heat-than the 7200, especially in the new unibody model. Is 800 versus 1066 BUS a terrible trade-off? In terms of secondary displays , I've heard less than lukewarm things about the new Apple 24 LED (glossy is no-no for me).
My intentions are to make documentaries and short fictions as well. I make a living as an actor so I don't need to be performing as a director/editor business wise!
I do want to explore that side of the craft, in a professional and enjoyable way though. I know that, in addition to the laptop, I will get a MacPro in a few years.
Thanks a lot for the inputs!

Successful video editing (as compared to tear your hair out video editing) requires at least two hard drives... one for all software and one for all data... some people use 3 drives, with data on one and scratch files on the 3rd drive
I'm not sure about software, but everything I've ever read in this forum says 5400 is NOT fast enough for the data drive
If you want to edit video... you have to buy the hardware that works

  • What are the negative effects of shutting down often?

I use my computer everyday. Is it the best choice to shut it down every night (when i am sleeping) for:
    a. Saving electricity?
    b. maintaining battery life?
    c. the environment???
And I am sure there are other factors I can't think of now. What are the negatives and positives of using sleep mode? When is it best to shut down?
Thank you all for reading, and answering!

I use my computer everyday. Is it the best choice to
shut it down every night (when i am sleeping) for:
    a. Saving electricity?
Nominal as the computer uses very little power when it is in sleep mode. The surge when the computer starts from being off is probably more as the computer is dead and has to warm up and restart everything.
    b. maintaining battery life?
Doesn't affect battery life. When the battery is charged the charge circuit turns off and the battery is idle as long as the magsafe is plugged in and powered.
    c. the environment???
Letting your computer sleep or turning it off is going to have minimal impact on the environment. See first answer.
What are the negatives and positives of using
    sleep mode?
No negatives I can think of. Positives are the computer wakes up right where you were. You don't need to close any programs or stop to make it go to sleep. Either close the lid or use one of the other methods to put it to sleep.
When is it best to shut down?
I always shut down when I am transporting my computer in a bag. Just personal habit. A few people transport it in a bag while it is asleep and have no problems. I also shut it down when I know I am going to be away from it for over 24 hours. Sleep would work just as well just habit.

CPU, RAM, bus speed, system HD, external HD, graphics - basically in that order
You should think in terms of purchasing for maximum future use. In that regard the new 17" MacBookPro is the way to go. The specs are significantly better than the early '08 MacBook and you will be much happier in the long run with performance, software support and longevity.
If you really need a large display, consider a 24" Dell, HP, NEC, etc. in the $200-$300 price range to stay within your total budget. You will be pleasantly surprised how good they are.
You could start out with the 5400rpm system HD - you can replace it anytime with a 7200rpm drive if necessary for hardly any more $ than it would cost in the first place; and replacing it does NOT void your warranty. But you WILL want/need a good external FW800 or eSATA drive (for eSATA you will need an eSATA expressCard/34 however) no matter what.
One other thought, if your primary use will be with an external display, and you don't actually need eSATA capability (FW800 will do you just fine at this point), then the 15" 2.66GHz or 2.8GHz MacBookPro models will be just fine at a significantly lower cost than the 17" model.

  • IPhone 3G - thinking of getting one but... what are the potential issues?

I'm thinking of getting an iPhone 3G because:
    1. I've been writing iPhone apps with a friend of mine (already have two in the app store) and I think I'm probably the only iPhone developer in the world who doesn't actually own an iPhone himself. My friend and partner in this venture has worked extra time doing actual testing on her original iPhone (and we've had other beta testers too), but there is only so much I can do in the simulator. I can't develop multi-touch or accelerometer features without my own device. And I feel I shouldn't put the entire hardware testing burden on her.
    2. I like the iPhone browser and the ability to use apps and a lot of other aspects of the iPhone.
    3. I live in Japan, and switching from my AU cell phone to the iPhone is actually a bargain here. There is no money down, and the payment plans start at like $25/month to a max of about $68/month. So it's actually cheaper here than in the U.S. Even adding in the $10-$15 extra charge for 24 months until the phone itself is paid off, it's no more expensive than my current cell phone. And I can keep my current phone number.
So it would seem to be a no-brainer. I should just walk over to my nearest Softbank store and get one, right?
The only thing holding me back is this - every time (and I mean every single time with no exaggeration) that I have ever purchased an Apple portable device, including every single one of my many MacBooks and MacBook Pros over the years and the iPod nano 3G I bought last year, have had problems that needed immediate care and replacement or servicing and, in the case of the iPod 3G that awful "tilted LCD" problem that after 3 exchanges I had to have the consumer affairs office in Tokyo arrange with Apple for me to get a refund on.
I love the systems, I am using my MacBook Pro right now as I write this message (already been repaired twice and the trackpad is acting funny again - glad I have AppleCare), but I dread the mental stress of dealing with getting my new out-of-the-box Apple products fixed. I feel they have quality checking problems with certain of the product lines.
I just know that there is going to be something really annoyingly wrong with the iPhone 3G as soon as I turn it on - like obviously dead pixels, or a tilted LCD like with the iPod nano 3G, or some weird color discolorations, or something loose and jiggly like with my MBP battery cover or ... I don't know... something. It's just happened too often with me to not be wary.
So my question is this. If the Softbank store lets me turn on and check out the iPhone before buying it, what are the things I should look out for?
Are there common, well-known issues with the iPhone 3G that I can check for, similar to the tilted screen issue on the iPod nano 3G?
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
I would like to get an iPhone. I just want one with no problems out-of-the-box.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    doug

But if it is something more subtle like "the colors seem wrong" or "the screen is not set straight" it will take more arguing. And I can't stand arguing about stuff like that just to get a good phone.
So... What were the problems you had with your phone?
Well the only reason I got the IPhones was because it was a birthday gift,And the first phone I got was the 16G in white so when we got home My screen was jumping so I said okay maybe if I power my phone off and than cut it back on maybe it will started to work a little better,While it didn't I just made thing worse My screen was only jumping it wouldn't come back on after that,So I was so mad cause we had to drive a 138 miles to get my phone and than my cousin came over and she have the same phone I had just got.But her phone look like she had it for some years the white on the back of the phone had turned a off white.
So we had to drive other 138 miles there and back for me to get other phone and when I made it to the Apple store I didn't know you suppose to call and make appt before you come up there about your phone. So I'm standing up there telling them that I just came yesterday and drove a 138 miles here and back and I just had to turn around and do it again today. So they went on and seen me and ask me what was going on with my phone. So I told them as they can see it was not coming on no more.
So they exchange my IPhone and I didn't get the same color due to how my cousin white IPhone was looking like,So I got a black IPhone instead.
So the new phone I got was working so good and than about two weeks later my phone would blink on and off and it would freeze on you during call's are anything. So you already know what I had to do again I had to drive other 138 miles there and back and I was not happy about that at all.So this time before I went I made appt that morning to come and they told me to come around 200pm but for me to try to be there at least ten minutes early. So I made it there around 145pm they didn't get to me still around 315pm.So when they final call me to go talk to someone about what's going on with my phone. They ask me for my receipt and I let them know I didn't have it cause they didn't give it to me cause yale told me I didn't need it cause yale was going to send it to my email address.
So they went to try to look up my email address,That took them other 30 minutes to find it,But they finial found it in there system. So they went on and exchange my phone again with no problem at all.
So this phone I got was doing so good, I really thought my trouble was all over still I saw a black line running down my screen of my phone. So I had to get on the phone with apple again so I can make other appt for the 3rd time,So I can go up there and bring this phone so they can look at it,Cause I thought maybe I was seening something are it suppose to be on my phone and I didn't know,But to come to find out it didn't suppose to be on my phone so they had to replaces my phone for the 3rd time.
So I bent haveing this phone That I got now about 3 months now and I got to tell you I went through **** and back to get this phone and it's really doing good really love the phone so much I'm so glade that I didn't give up on this phone because I was haveing so much bad luck with getting a IPhone I was about to give up but I am so glade that I kept trying. It really is a great phone to have it have so much on this phone I love it.I just hope I don't have no more problem down the line cause I don't want to go through this again.
I feel were you are coming from cause I wouldn't want nobody to go through what I went through try to getting my phone.
But I'M telling you,it might be worth you going through this at the end..The TV on this phone is so unbelievable I'M telling you,you going to love it.Before I go to sleep at night I listen to my i pod on my IPhone and I love it that's how I go to sleep at night are I might watch a movie that I have on my phone at night. It's a great phone to have all the way around I give it a ten.
And other thing you said you don't like to arguing sometime you just have to do that.you and me have so much in common cause I don't like that my self,I feel like why should I have to raise my voices to get my point a cross that's just crazy to me.
So how long do yale have to exchange something were you stay.

My iPhone 4 turns off (crashes) after accesing any apps, It work fine when plugged to charger (power supply). I tried all troubleshooting steps suggested by Apple but it doesn't work. I backed up my phone. I restored it several times. Even I re-installed iphone software. Also I restored it as a new iphone but doesn't work. We can't know if there's a "fixture" because we can't examine your phone.  But Apple can.  Make a Genius Bar appointment and get your phone evaluated.

  • My 4th gen 32gb iPod touch recently crashed for more than 12 hours during which time it was completely unresponsive. This is not the first time it has crashed but by far the longest time it has been unresponsive. What are the likely causes of this?

I don't regularly use any apps beyond Windows Live, Facebook, Skype etc. but app crashes are becoming frequent and this recent blackout was disturbing. What are the potential causes of this and how can I avoid them in the future?

it's weird , your device is not jailbreraked and it crashes? my device is jailbreaked and i almost have the same problems.
    look, to avoid these problems:
1- dont open too much apps , and if you do , close them by multitasking menu.
2-try sometimes to turn off and on your device , its like refreshing ( called "respringing" in jailbreaked devices.
if you have the same problem , see an apple specialist.
    plz mask as helphul question.
    thanks.

  • Looking for new laptop what are the differences between pro and air? Besides size. Does the air preform like the pro?

Looking for new laptop what are the differences between pro and air? Besides size. Does the air preform like the pro?

The NEW macbook Pro and Air are EXTREMELY close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics.
....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air VS Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse.
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.

A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are MUCH FASTER due to SSD density
"The 512GB Samsung SSD found in our 13-inch model offers roughly a 400MB/s increase in write speeds over the 128GB SanDisk/Marvell SSD"

  • Thinking of purchasing Illustrator 10 - what are the Mac system requirements

Thinking of purchasing Illustrator 10 - what are the Mac system requirements. I have a G4 10.4 and a MacBook Pro OSX 10.9 Maverick!

    Hi, welcome to the forum.

Did you actually mean version 10, as in Illustrator 10 from 2001?
    If so:
    • Your G4 with OS X 10.4 (2005-2007) would probably run it, (using Rosetta if needed / PPC based).
    • OS X 10.9 will definitely not allow install or run it.
    Illustrator 10: System Requirements
    • Macintosh: Power PC Processor G3, G4, or G4 dual; Mac OS software 9.1, 9.2 or Mac OS X 10.1; 128 MB Ram; 180 MB available disk space; For Postscript printing, printers capable of Adobe PS levels2 or 3.
    • Windows: Intel Pentium II and above; Windows 98 and above; 128 MB Ram; 180 MB available disk space; For Postscript printing, printers capable of Adobe PS levels2 or 3.

  • I'm thinking of upgrading from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this? What are the implications / consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware?

I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. I know, I'm years behind, but it has become a necessity. My Mac is becoming slow and is incompatible with many softwares and websites. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this upgrade? What are the implications and/or consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware? Are there any precautions I should take before the installation? I have read some posts about Macs slowing right down after installing Yosemite. Any insights and information (in layman's terms please!) would be very useful. Thanks.

Huge thanks for your response Michel. I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. I have done as you suggested, the details are pasted below. Clearly there are some applications I need to remove and no doubt my HD could do with a 'spring clean'. My Mac 'Safe Booted' when I turned it on this morning.
I use many different softwares, some web-based. The decision to upgrade to OSX Yosemite is because I was unable to attend a Webinar this week using GoToMeeting downloadable software. GoToMeeting have upgraded their system and my OS is no longer supported. Other websites like VImeo no longer support my version of Safari. I tend to use Chrome if Safari isn't compatible.
    Problem description:
I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. However I have noticed that my MacBook Pro becoming ‘slow’ over the last 3 weeks and therefore might have some issues that need to be resolved before I even consider installing OSX Yosemite. Over the last week my Mac has Safe Booted on three occasions, so clearly there’s a ‘glitch’ occurring.
