I think my Mac has a virus. How do I get rid of it?

I was trying to watch a movie online and when I clicked on it a spam webpage came up and I immediately exited out of it and the movie website. However, I am still getting random pop ups (such as Macbook Cleaner) every time I click on something and my computer has started to be really slow. How can I fix this?

If AdwareMedic didn't fix the problem, see:

I opened a spam e-mail, I think my phone has a virus how do I get it off? HELP!

It was an email about a video I posted on youtube. It said "the video you posted under your account has been approved and posted. Click link to see the video" but I didn't post any video so I clicked the link on my phone and it took me to a page that was not youtube so I immediately closed the window went to my settings and deleted cookies and history. Later I tried to login to one of my banking app and it kept saying loading for about 5 min before I exited the app then tried again and then it wouldn't even let me log in.

  • My laptop has a virus, how can i get rid of it?

My laptop has a virus on it and its called AntiVirus 360. I looked up on google what it is and its a virus that disguises itself as a program to help detect viruses when itself is the virus. I've tried many different programs to try and delete it off my computer but nothing seems to work. I also read that sometimes this virus can appear to have been deleted but then when you reboot the computer it re-installs itself. How can I get rid of it completely and permenantly? I have a friend that works at Best Buy and he said you guys could repair it but it costs about $200. I didn't know if there was anything else I could try that you know of. Please help because it keeps messing with my internet pages and is making my computer slower than it should be.
    Thank you for your time!

Stuff like that is better known as "spyware/malware" - There are categories of malware not consider viruses (although often they are installed by a virus as a larger payload).
I would suggest trying Malwarebytes.  If Malwarebytes can't fix it, your best bet is probably to nuke and repave.  (i.e. backup your data files and then reinstall Windows and all applications from scratch.)

  • I think I may have a virus - how do I get rid of it?

Last night I visited a website while searching for an authentic Chicago Blackhawks jersey (a gift). The site "nhledgeshop.com" came up in the Google search with the description "Patrick Kane Authentic Jersey, Buy Blackhawks Authentic & Premier Patrick Kane Jersey from the ultimate sports store, featuring Authentic, …" When I clicked on it, it took a long time to load. It looked like a legitimate site, but I couldn't find a phone # for it, so when I searched on the site name, I found a lot of complaints about people who ordered stuff and didn't get it, couldn't get through to their customer service, etc. (Needless to say, I didn't buy from them.) When I shut my computer down, it didn't power down like it normally does (the on screen icons disappear, then the apps along the sidebar fly off the edge, and then the computer shuts down). Instead, the entire screen went white and a diagnostic bar came up saying something about an installation and asking if I wanted to abort or exit (I think?). The box was only up for about 1 1/2 seconds before the screen went black and shut down. It caught me off guard, so I missed it the first time. I turned the computer back on and shut it down again, and the same thing happened. This time I caught the box and clicked abort. However, it's still there. Today I powered down at least 4 times and the same thing happened every time. I caught the abort button a couple of times, but that doesn't seem to get rid of whatever it is.
Does anyone know how I could check my computer to see if there's anything bad on it? I searched the internet and found suggestions to install a free antivirus app called ClamXav, but before I install anything I want to hear from the community whether I should do that or if there's something different that I should do. Please let me know, and thank you all in advance for your help.

    Hello,
Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

  • I have a virus, how do I get rid of it?

I opened a website and a survey popped up. I didn't think anything of it and answered the survey. Now my Mac has a virus. Almost every webpage I open is bordered with "deal finder" ads and advertisements. How do I get rid of it?

Note that using a tool like Onyx to frequently "clean" your Mac is potentially more harmful than useful. That is something that should be done for troubleshooting only. See The myth of the dirty Mac.
As to the ad problem, there's no good reason for resetting Safari or cleaning the machine with Onyx to fix that problem, unless you were visiting sites that all used the same advertising company, which was using cookies to determine how to target your browser. Those sites would all have to be complicit in displaying the ads... nothing that would have been cleared using these techniques could have injected ads into sites that didn't explicitly support them.
If the ads come back, look for more solutions in Eliminating browser redirects and advertisements.

  • How do i get rid of a virus, how do i get rid of a virus

how do i get rid of a virus

First, note that any time your anti-virus software detects malware, you need to investigate it. You should never delete the supposedly infected files automatically, nor should you delete the anti-virus software without investigating. Both of these things could get you into trouble.
It is very likely that Bitdefender only detected some Windows malware attached to e-mail or in your web browser's cache or something along those lines. However, since you have deleted Bitdefender, we can't know for sure. We would need to know exactly what malware was detected and what files Bitdefender claimed to be infected in order to give you any specific advice on how to respond. For some general advice, see:
    How to remove infected files
As to the utility of Bitdefender, it definitely isn't all that great on the Mac. I would agree it should be removed, though the right time to do so was after dealing with the possible malware it detected.
Regarding what you should replace it with, I would refer you to my Mac Malware Guide. It will tell you how to protect yourself, which is far more important. If, after reading it, you decide that you want anti-virus software, it has a couple recommendations.

DO NOT download AVG. As has already been pointed out repeatedly, this is not due to a virus, and AVG is no good on the Mac anyway.

  • I have the Geonei-a virus how do I get rid of it?

I have what is listed by Sophos the OSX/Geonei-A virus.  I tried the regular scan and the custom scan.  Neither have worked.  How do I get rid of it? Linc Davis I have seen you help people before.  Can you help me?

The only anti-virus software I would recommend these days is ClamXav. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that I advocate using anti-virus software. As the others have indicated, you must learn how to protect yourself first and foremost. If you don't do that, all the anti-virus software in the world won't help you.
See my Mac Malware Guide for information on how to stay safe from malware (and adware).

  • Afraid email carried virus how do I get rid of it?

Afraid I just opened an email from"postmail" and it was spam.  How do I check if now have a virus?  How do I get rid of it?

It had my name as the sender but I didn't send it.
That's know as spoofing. Very common. The basic gist is that your email address is stuck in the "Sender" field even though it didn't come from you.
When she opened it her screen went into a garbled broken code mess.
That happens with certain file types. Safari and other web browsers will also do that. What happens is that the file is not a web page, but the browser also doesn't recognize it as a file that should be downloaded. So it tries to display the binary data as text. Which always displays as a mess of seemingly random characters.
