I think my MacBook Pro has a Virus.
I've had my pro for over a year now, have updated it to the newest software and everything. Last night my computer looked like it had a mind of it's own. It would open and close different things on my desktop, it wouldn't let me close out of anything or even use my mouse pad correctly, also when in Safari it would zo in and out without me even touching the mouse pad, and would change pages and click on things when I wouldn't even touch the mouse pad. If anyone can help me out with this problem, because I was under the assumption that Macs didn't get virus.
There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be applicable.
1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor in response to user input, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
4. Reset the System Management Controller.
5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

My macbook pro has a virus/trojan that is resetting the EFI via apci and it is getting root access privileges. It seems to be creating multiple aliases that bundle with rogue apps and preferences so it is very difficult to control or fix. Please help..It all stems from the "about donwloads" PDF which kicks off the restructuring of the OS..
Well given the fact that it is not just myself who is infected and also that this is my 3rd macbook in 1 year because the other 2 efi's were compromised to the point where they were unusable, and also that I must've been to the mac store no less than 100 times in a year for these issues, I beg to differ. Here is what I can show you. This has been ongoing for over a year now.
I will try and show you as much as I can.
1) Here is what I see when I run mount from terminal:
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
localhost:/4zOta2Q9FMiMnRjTROIbhU on /Volumes/MobileBackups (mtmfs, nosuid, read-only, nobrowse)
Why on earth is /Volumes/MobildBackups my localhost is beyond me. I don't use iCloud and Mobile me is obsolete.
2) Here is what I show when I run ls -al /*/*/*/*.efi from root
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 May 1 00:33 /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 Oct 2 2012 /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 115716 Dec 13 14:08 /usr/standalone/i386/tmbootpicker.efi
As far as I know my boot.efi should not change everytime I boot my machine.
3) Here is something very interesting. When I run cd /dev followed by ls -al look what I have;

I think my macbook pro has some form of trojan
Hello, I have a macbook pro and I think it has some sort of trojan (or something similar). I have been through many apple discussions and watched many youtube tutorials to try and fix my problem but nothing has work unfortunately.
The sympotms include:
Green links
when on a wep page a few random words on each site I visit become green and they have a double underline on them. These are links and redirect to other webpages and sometimes even without clicking or hovering over them a little pop up comes from them.
Pop Ups
There are many popups on any page I go on to. This is especially true for youtube and the google search page. However it does happen on most webpages where there will be ads on the page itself or other ads open up on new tabs or windows and ads have been popping up from the bottom right corner of the screen, similar to a notification.
I have uninstalled or possible software I can find and have most defintley uninstalled mackeeper. I have reset my safari in hopes of ridding these issues but that hasn't worked either. I scanned for viruses in a desperate attempt to find something but nothing was found. Pop ups have been blocked. I cant seem to find anything unusal in the programs or settings. I do know my way around a computer but however I am a somewhat novice when it comes to the more advanced things and I only bought my first mac in February (or March) this year.
I have tried everything I know of and everything I've found in order to fix this but it still isn't helping.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you so much in advanceEtreCheck version: 1.9.11 (43) - report generated 24 May 2014 4:07:39 pm ACST

How do you tell if your macbook pro has a virus?
How can I be sure that my MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 does not have a virus?
My email was suspended by the hosting company saying that the account was sending out spam.
They told me to run anti-virus on the computer and make sure it was clean; then they would take my email off suspension.
Please help, I need to have access to my email account!
ThanksYou don't have any viruses. It sounds like you may be getting scammed. Has your email account actually been locked? If it has, then send them an email stating you have no viruses on your Mac computer. Check first to be sure the email came from your hosing company's email address.

I believe my macbook pro has a virus
Im just looking for the best software for virus protection. I dont like mackeeper.
thanks,
joroA computer Virus, is specific to an operating system. For example, if you receive an email with a virus for Windows Vista attached to it, YOU will not get the virus, as you are not running the Windows OS. If however, you forward that email to someone who does have Windows Vista computer, they can get the virus. If you forward to someone who has Windows XP, they won't get it, as they are not running Windows Vista.
You can forwarded a virus in an email, but not have it yourself. Why do you think that you have a virus?
Running a virus protection software, is about the only way you can safe guard against this, however may not be necessary.
For ideas on what antivirus softwares you can use, try these links - http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15850/clamxav. and http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition.aspx.
You may also want to look here regarding Mac Malware / spyware - http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg/
If the above isn't the case, and you don't feel it is required that you have antivirus software installed, then don't install one. -

I think my MacBook Air has a virus or something?
I used to watch the OC all the time and there was always pop ups but I would just exit out of them. Now everything keeps "quitting unexpectedly" including finder. I tried to restart but it won't let me type in the admin name/password. What do I do?
I'm not sure what "the OC" is. Can you explain? It's unlikely these issues are related, or are caused by malware, but details will help to be sure.
Sounds like you may have some serious system issues or even potentially a hardware issue. Try starting up the machine in safe mode. Does that work?
When you say it won't let you type in your login credentials, do you mean it's not accepting them, or that it simply isn't responding at all to keyboard inputs? -

I think my MacBook Pro is attacked by virus. Need HElP!
I think my MacBook Pro has been attacked by virus. I have deleted the programs( by moving it to trash and emptied it) which I think was the main source of this Malware; which is MacKeeper in my case. However random ****** ads are still popping out and my search engine is switched to thesmartseacrh.net in safari. this search engine gives fake information and also disabled most of the right information. From then on, I am afraid to install any anti virus software online even though it was highly recommended by the people, so it seems that I still can't move on. Is there any pro out there who is willing to help me? >,< my mac is still new I am crying my a** off if this virus still can't be removed T_T. I FREAKING HATE ADS. Help everyone. Thank you.
MacKeeper lokely has some hidden files still active.
I have no idea how they can get away with advertising MacKeeper at all.
I even avoid linking to sites that advertise it.
You really really need to uninstall it, but maybe not using their uninstaller.
Klaus1's great post on MacKeeper...

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left me with my icons stuck in the grid on the right side of my desktop. I had the ability to move them and have them stay put in various sectors of the desktop, which I found very useful. The clean install upgraded the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8. I want to move them again but there I see no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Has the upgrade deleted that option? Suggestions? I am new to this community and if not new to Mac, I often feel that way. This is one of those times.
Julz11 in NYCI have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

Please help me get rid of Genieo once and for all! When downloading a photo for work that someone shared with a 'free' sharing service, my MacBook Pro has acquired a persistent virus-like thing that opens as my Firefox homepage - no matter what. I have faithfully followed all instructions on removing and unsintalling this parasite both from my computer and from Firefox . I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox Mozilla as well. All to no avail. Please help.
In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
#From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
#Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
#You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
#To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
#Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.
You can find further information about uninstalling extensions in the following articles:

It is highly likely that this attachment is malware. It's also highly likely that it is Windows malware. So you're probably not infected with anything. What is the exact name of the attachment you opened? Please be sure to include whatever extension the filename has (such as .exe, .pdf, .doc, etc).
What happens when you try deleting the attachment files from your desktop? Is there an error message of some kind? If so, what is the exact error message you're seeing? (Please don't try to paraphrase it... tell us the precise wording of the message.) -
My macbook pro has FBI moneypack virus, how to remove
help
my macbook pro has an fbi moneypack virus on one user---can i remove this problem? As has already been pointed out, that's not Mac malware.
From your description, I'm guessing that you're seeing a pop-up window in your web browser that has no close box and no buttons for dismissing it. This is not malware, simply a nasty JavaScript on a web site. That pop-up may very well be part of an attempt to install malware on your computer, but you aren't using Windows, so it won't affect you.
If this guess is correct, force-quit your browser according to the instructions that have already been given. Then, start your browser again while holding the shift key. This will prevent the browser from trying to re-load the pages that were open when you forced it to quit.
Since you're new to the Mac, you may find my Mac Malware Guide useful:

My MacBook Pro has been incredibly slow and laggy
So my MacBook Pro has been pretty much inoperable for a couple of months. The computer crashed and afterwards it would constantly lag. I did a fresh install thinking it would solve the problem, but it did not do anything. I took the computer to the Genius Bar, and they claimed that it was because I was running too many apps and that the computer was slowing down (doesnt make too much sense considering its a mid 2012 and on a fresh install) and then promptly sent me home. When you flash the memory in the beginning, sometimes it will be less laggy for a second, but then start lagging a couple minutes after computer use (this is still on a virtually clean install). I took their suggestion and added a SDD thinking it might help. Nope. So the hardware tests/diagnostics are all normal and I have no idea whats going on. It literally took me 10-15 minutes to run the EtreCheck and copy into mail so I could post these results from another computer. I will love anyone forever if they could explain to me how to fix this.

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.
