I think my mobo died....

 ;(
Well here's the lowdown,
System specs:
Antec 400W P/S
MSI KT4VL mobo
AMD 2200+
1024 MB 333DDR Crucial Ram
80 GB W.D. hd
40/24/40 Lite-On CDRW
16X Piece of Junk DVD
cave-man edition magnetic disk reader (floppy...)
ATI too-expensive Radeon 9700 Pro
SB Audigy
Netgear cheappie NIC
Yesterday I started up my PC and noticed the BIOS identified my Athlon 2200+ was a "mobile AMD Athlon 1700." After reeling my jaw back from the floor, I proceeded to Windows(XP Pro), and right-clicked on My Computer. Windows said I was running a 1.47 Ghz proc, which I am assuming the mobile 1700 runs at.
I rebooted and went to my BIOS setup, and made sure the FSB was set at 133, which it was. I then rebooted and went back to Windows, and ran Live Update 2. I was running v1.7 for my mobo and downloaded and then flashed to 1.8 using DOS mode.
But alas, still a mobile 1700...
So, being the twidget I am I busted open the case and removed the heatsink (taking all necessary precautions, since I 've spent enough money buying new parts becuase I was a DA in my earlier years). I couldn't identify any visual damage to the CPU, so I cleaned off the existing thermal grease from it and the h/s and then reapplied and remounted both back on the mobo.
Hoping that the problem just went away I plugged her into the wall and now when I press the power button, NOTHING happens. After again pulling my jaw off the floor and picking up the hair I just pulled out of my head, I opened back up the case and my trusty Mag-Lite and I began to search the mobo for any visual marks. With nothing I could see, I verifed the electrical plug running from the p/s to the mobo was fine and so was the jack on the mobo. Well, nothing so I pulled the Power On Switch connection off and checked it, nothing again...
So, after checking the Power Switch, the wires running to and from the mobo(power and all others), pulling the CPU back out again and checking for any damage, and almost putting a hole through the drywall, I am now sitting with a dead PC(and of course, it was my Gaming PC...).
So can anyone help me narrow down what the problem is? I figure I am a victim of static discharge on the mobo, or maybe a bad CPU(does the PC even turn on if the CPU is bad?), or maybe a bad p/s (haven't opened it up to check the fuse because it will void the warranty).
Please help! ?(

Sorry folks, but after writing my original post, I got an idea. I checked the Clear CMOS jumper, which I remembered trying to clear the CMOS.
It was set on Clear CMOS!!!
Apparently the smart folks at MSI decided that if it was set to Clear CMOS, the computer wouldn't turn on... Just a while back my buddy ruined his mobo (It was a piece of junk ECS anyways...Those tend to fry just sitting there...) by having it clearing the CMOS everytime it started up.
Thanks MSI for watching out for this poor moron!
Now, back to Freelancer!  :D

  • I think the hardrive died on me... (Can anyone help confirm)

I think the Hardrive (80Gb) in my 17inch G4 1,5Ghz powerbook died on me.
When I try to restart it doesn´t go beyond the grey screen, then it shuts off again. There is no sound of the disk starting up either.
And when I start it from the OSX Start-up DVD and try to reinstall the OS, It doesn´t locate any disk to install to.
Just before this happened, a game that I play frequently (Medal of Honor: Breakthrough) failed to start because it couldn´t locate some files, also the disc utility would take forever to verify the disk, but when it finally finished it claimed it to be ok.
Luckily I decided to back up all my personal data, when I got the above symptoms, so all my stuff is savfe on dvds.
    1) Now before I purchase a new harddrive, is there anything else I should try first?
    2) And secondly, when I buy a new harddrive can I buy a larger one than the 80Gb that came with the powerbook (Will the internal stuff support it?)
    3) What is the appropriate type of drives that will fit (This I will probably find on google, but since I am here I am throwing it in...)
    Thanks in advance!
G5 Dual 2 GhZ (first release)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    1) Now before I purchase a new harddrive, is there anything else I should try
    first?
Can you use disk utility (boot from startup CD/DVD) ? What does it state about the harddrive ?
    2) And secondly, when I buy a new harddrive can I buy a larger one than the
80Gb that came with the powerbook (Will the internal stuff support it?)
Yes, this should be no problem. Look at http://www.ifixit.com (or any other website) for DIY guides of how to replace the harddisk and also find some offers for harddisks suited to your computer.
    3) What is the appropriate type of drives that will fit
    All 2.5 inch ATA/IDE drives.

  • I think new mobo (MSI 770T-C45), is causing sleep problem in windows 7.

Hey all, I'm new and first time buyer of MSI mobo....   Finally got way from Biostar and Asus...lol   Anyways, I upgraded to a  770T-c45 and so far so good.  One problem been having is my PC wont sleep, monitor does but not pc.  Before I upgraded everything was fine, so my only isolated cause is to be the motherboard, I think..
I've tried everything in power options.....geesh...   I've gone into bios tried a few things there also, but still no change.  I wonder if the APS thingy is causing this???
Anyone having this problem or maybe help with a solution.
Btw...i have this XCLEO WInd tunnel tower, and it has 2 huge (super bright)  Blue fans on the side and it's really nice to get those to sleep along with pc..
    thanks everyone.

Did you set the ACPI standby state to S3?  If not, go to Power Management in the bios and change ACPI Standby State to S3.

  • Is my mobo dying ?

    Hi chaps,
Have had this 865PE 3.0 Ghz system now for nearly 3 years and think it may be coming unstuck after as much reliable operation.
Today the mobo failed to recognise my SATA hard drives though the IDE (boot drive) and cdrom drives are still recognised. Checked in the BIOS and they are just simply not seen...
I struggle to believe I have two HDD fail at once ... could my SATA controller (if there is such a thing) have failed and time for a new mobo ?  >:(
    Any assistance appreciated.
    Thanks.

    try this....
Go to BIOS, Integrated Periperherials, On-Chip IDE Configuration
ATA Configuration : Pata + Sata
    S-ATA Keep Enabled : Yes
    P-ATA Keep Enabled : Yes
    Pata Channel Selection : Both
Combined Mode Option : Sata 1st Channel
    Sata Port Definition P0-Master/P1-Slave

  • Ick.. think my battery died? not even a year later.

I've had my laptop hooked up next to my pc for a few weeks (bout 2) plugged into the AC outlet. Not a problem at all.
    Always had a green light...
So this morning I go to unplug it to bring it into work with me, and bram it shuts off. Odd... replug it in, hrm.. check the little LED indicator on the bottom of the battery... showing as dead.. even though the adapter shows it as charged.. Works fine with adapter just not with battery.
Leopard shows my battery as "not charging" however.
Think my battery is kaput. Battery shows 75 cycles.. charge remaining 0.. fully charged no.. chargng no.. full charge capacity.. 0.. battery health poor.
Is it dead jim? I am under warranty so i'm not concerned really, but I find it odd it died this way. Going to try resetting the usual first.

No charge after only 85 cycles sounds like a dead battery or a "stuck" charging circuit not letting it charge. Try [resetting the SMC|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319] and [resetting the PRAM|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238] and see if that gets the charger to go into fast charge mode (yellow/orange light on the plug LED) and the battery manages to get and hold a charge. If not, warranty replacement seems in order.
While it is considered bad to keep the portable plugged in all the time, without letting the battery exercise itself, and a battery recalibration (which carries with it a full discharge/charge cycle) is recommended every couple of month, two weeks of continuous plug-in shouldn't cause a complete battery failure, unless it was already weak from the start.

  • HELP - I think my iSight died on my iMac G5 2.1 Ghz, 20"

I have been successfully video chatting for a year between my home computer (iMac G5 2.1 Ghz, 20") and work (MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, 17" 2.33 GHz) and my father in Ohio (iMac G5 17").
All of a sudden last week (we hadn't used the iMac to chat for ~ 3-4 weeks), I called home from work and the kids where able to see me and hear me, but I could ONLY hear them. The iSight light was OFF on the iMac and all video options were grayed out.
Interesting too, the file names across the top in iChat went file, edit, view, buddies, AUDIO, etc .... AUDIO instead of video.
So this made me think it could be a software (Hopefully !!) issue. But since I have tried photo booth and get the following message: "Photo Booth cannot open because no camera is attached or the camera is in use by another application".
and from inside iChat preferences, under tab video - in the center of the big square it states "There is no camera attached to this computer".
Still No light (power) next to the camera opening
The only software changes that I can remember recently were by the log on 2/16 ... Java for Mac 10.4, Release 5; Security Updates 2007-02, -01, and daylight savings time. Added a Cannon Pixma 830 printer with associated software - MP Navigator 2.2; OmniPage SE Direct OCR; Easy Photoprint.
I am unsure if any these software changes were before or after my last sucessful videochat from the iMac.
Help -- software or hardware ?????
    AL

I did a number of searches on forum - nothing with cannon divers was related. Bit I found a couple similar problems after people updated to 10.4.8 and fixed their firmware on iMacs - esp the G5s with built in iSight.
So I followed the suggestions on this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3780988&#3780988
    from Macfixit.com:
Built-in iSight not recognized Some users have reported loss of their built-in iSights after applying the iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.1. In some cases, this issue can be resolved by resetting the SMC (system management controller) using this process:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
Resetting PRAM can solve a variety of issues As mentioned in our coverage of recent EFI Firmware updates issued for other Macs, a number of potentially serious issues apparent after applying this EFI Firmware Update can be resolved by simply resetting PRAM/NVRAM via the following process:
Shut down your Mac, then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
This workaround is a good first course of action before exploring more complex fixes. It should also be attempted if your system cannot properly startup after applying the update.
YEA !!! - THIS SOLVED MY PROBLEM !!!! THE iSIGHT POWERS UP NOW !!!!
    Thanks

  • I think my Extigy died... Need h

So I come home today (after getting a parking ticket I might add...) and see that my Extigy has died. It's been working without any problems for three years now, and today, all of a sudden, it starts going bananas. All three lights flashed as one every few seconds, and my computer wouldn't recognize the device. Restarting didn't help, unplugging and re-plugging everything (power, USB) didn't help. I haven't made any changes to anything: it was fine in the morning. Should I dig it a grave or is there something I can do? Any help would be most appreciated.

And now, after realizing I forogt what the name was , I realized there is already a large thread on the subject (faulty Audigy 2 NX power supplies are apparently to blame). If anyone knows what the final word on the subject is, I'd appreciate a line.

  • I think my ipod died

i'm hoping someone can help me out with this. i had tons of music that i downloaded from cd's and purchased from itunes that was stored on my ipod. last night i try to turn on my ipod and it wouldn't turn on. eventually i was able to turn it on. everything seemed ok, i went to play a song, and it freezes. i try to reset it and nothing happens--couldn't turn it off, nothing! i try to turn it on. it turns on but all of my music is gone!! does anyone have any idea what could've possibly happened?? my ipod has frozen before and i was able to reset it and bring it back and it was normal and all my music was fine. now it just went mental and the music has disappeared from it!! help!!

Restore it, then reload the music from your iTunes library.
See: How to restore the iPod to factory settings.

  • HELP! I think my iPod died!

So I went and installed the new firmware, as iTunes prompted. When it told me to plug it into a power source I did that and all was fine until it started to refresh. I wait about 15 minutes and the bar had not moved AT ALL, so I (rather foolishly, I might add) decided to do a hard reset (menu and center button).
Now my iPod won't even turn on. The screen remains blank, plugged into my computer, a wall outlet, or unplugged completely.
    Help?

You may need to reset it. Put the hold switch to the OFF/White position. Now toggle it ON/orange then back off again. Then press and hold both the MENU and center buttons on the iPod and hold them for a good 15 seconds or so. Your iPod should reboot starting with the Apple Logo screen.
If it doesn't work the first time, give it a second or third go. Sometimes it takes a few/several tries.
See this thread as an example of what I mean by needing to try it many times...

  • I think my fan died...

My year and a half year old Macbook is turning off at random when not connected to the AC adapter. I tried the SMC Reset, but saw no noticeable improvement. I checked to see if there were any updates I had missed and there weren't...
I read that my fan could be clogged or dead or something, if that's the case then how do I fix it?
Also: This weekend I tried something different. I decided to use my macbook very little intermittently (Like 20 minutes here, 15 there, just surfing the web and stuff) and it never turned itself off! I was actually able to run the battery down normally!
So apparently it's only been turning itself off when in use for long periods of time (like 45+ minutes at a time) which leads me to further believe that my fan is messed up. Is there any way I can fix this (like clean it or something) or is my fan toast and needing of replacement, because that sounds expensive... Thanks!

Our MacBooks (I have the same model as you) have only one fan; SMC fan control is for multiple Mac models including MBPs which have two.
When your Mac is heating up, go to Applications/ Utilities/ Activity Monitor. Change the pull-down in the middle to "All Processes" ("My Processes" is the default) and sort by the CPU column. What's using the most CPU?

  • I think my MBP died. random freezes, three beeps at startup, etc.

Yeah....Yesterday my MBP started freezing up randomly, but there didn't seem to be a problem with the windows boot camp partition.
Today, I had a big event so I couldn't use my laptop, but I got home a couple of hours ago and started using it (in OSX)...and eventually started freezing again.
It would only happen when I was typing something (on a website, iChat, Adium, etc.). When it froze, it froze: no mouse movement, keyboard input, clock would stay still, wouldn't even respond to closing the lid. So after a few "turn on, use computer for 2 min, force power off" cycles, I tried to turn it on to the wonderful sound of three loud beeps....pause...three loud beeps.
    That can't be good, right?
Is there anything I can do?

Yes. The first thing to try is removing and reseating the RAM modules. Poorly seated RAM modules are a common cause of the problem you're having.
It's also possible that you've got bad RAM installed. If you've upgraded it yourself, try reinstalling the original modules and see if that solves the problem. If you have not upgraded the RAM, or you don't have other modules to try, remove one module at a time and try booting the MBP with only one stick of RAM. Be sure to try a single stick in each of the two RAM slots.

  • MSI KT6 Delta MOBO - recommended power supply

My power supply exploded , I think, and I cannot power up the system.  Hopefully this has not affected the rest of the system: chip, graphcard etc.
What voltage power supply should I have for this particular motherboard?
    cheers

I'm sorry some of you are having problems with cheap power supplies.  That is beside the point, however.  I can only state what I know from experience, as I have never taken any classes in switching supply design.  I have absolutely zero (0) problems with cheap supplies.  And any motherboard that is so power hungry that it can itself overdraw a power supply is very poor design.  As I said, I ran my HP Pavilion xt983 with a 200-watt cheap-o PSU with all that stuff in my previous post for over 4 years with no problems (and the PSU still works even after the mobo died from bad capacitors).  I am using it to rebuild the exact same (minus HP mobo) system when the replacement mobo (crappy Chaintech) comes back this week from being repaired under warranty.
I never said wattage was the only metric - it's just a guide, as no manufacturer I know of specifies exactly how much and what type of current anything they build uses in the computer world (nor would I trust the spec if they did) - it changes under load.  Most people use max figures to decide how much current they need.  I just don't want people thinking they need an expensive PSU to run their good to mediocre PC.  I don't use junk and my PCs last for years on end (actually never had one I built die for any reason, knock on wood).  You do not need a high-wattage or even big namebrand PSU at all, unless you are building a very high-end PC (with light cathodes, water cooling, light kits, multiple every kind of drives, etc. - meaning you plan to abuse the system).  The run-of-the-mill PC needs no more than a cheap (non-junky) PSU that can provide at least 17 amps on the 12V rail.  That's what I use and that's what I recommend.  Wattage should be at 300+ watts to "allow for expansion".  Use the calculator.  See what all you have to add to get up anywhere near 430 Watts.  It can be done, but I would never tax a system that way.  The bottom line is watts are only a limiting factor, not a design factor.  If you add up all the rails on a typical 430-Watt PSU, it is way over 430 watts.  However, if you use all the 12V amps it can turn out and still stay near 12 volts, most of the 5V amps, and most of the 3.3V amps by overloading the system with doodads and whatnots, the 430W limit will matter.  As long as you build what I consider a normal system, you'll never use 430 Watts.  All decent PSUs can supply enough 3.3V and 5V current (should be around 30-40+ amps each), but many of them are deficient on the 12V rail.  Looking for a PSU that can churn out 17+ amps on the 12V rail usually means it can handle about any normal load (meaning single processor, mobo, a HDD or two, a FDD, a few sticks of RAM, and  DR/DVD burner or two, and a few expansion cards with no strange mods like lights and 100 fans, water cooling, etc.) on all rails.
So, to recap:  For everyday computing, watts are only a limiting factor, so don't get less than 300 in case you really want that power hungry device of the future or want to build a top-end system now.  Current is critical, so don't get anything that's puny on any rail (3.3+5V = ~30-40+ amps each and 12V = 17+ amps).  Ignore all the "this power supply rocks" junk you'll see in bulletin boards and on Newegg (and other retailers) and look at the specs yourself.  Namebrand means as much as you think it does - some have a good rep, some have a bad rep, some have no rep.

  • Issues with windows 7 ram on a gd65 mobo

Hi all, i recently upgraded my pc after my old asus mobo died on me.  I found a good deal with a gd65, i5 750, and 4 x2 gigs of ram on newegg as a package deal.  I was looking around on windows and it says i have 8 gigs of ram but only 2.99 is available to utilize.... . I have done some searching around the net and these forums for for a fix to this problem, i hear the foxcon socket may be an issues (i do not know which socket type i have or how to tell).  I also saw that in the 1.5 bios update they fixed something with the mobo recognizing 8 gigs of ram, which brings me to my point!
Should I update my bios, i am currently running in 1.0.  So the question is, is the bios version causing this issue with the ram?  On a side note i originally only had 2 x2 gigs of ram and it had 2 registered and 1 available.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, and here is my system info so that you can better help me
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
    Memory: G.SKILL Trident 4GB (2 x 2GB)
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+ (EVGA)
HDD:  WD 74gig raptor, WD 160gig
If i should update what can i do to make sure it goes as smooth as possible?  Any help at all or a link to something helpful would be great thanks!

Yes, it is a BIOS detection problem. Update it to v1.5 to solve the problem.
