I think this ipod is dead.

First, let me say I have done everything that the support website has told me to do.
Restarted the ipod, retried with a different USB, restarted the computer, reinstalled updater software.
However, when I plug the ipod in, nothing happens. I hear that it connects, then disconnects and the updater program says "can't mount ipod." Or "plug in an ipod to update it."
When not plugged into the computer, we have only an apple icon which after about 30 seconds turns into a folder with an exclamation point. Leading me again to the 5 r's, which I cannot complete. When I plug it in to charge in the electrical outlet, it does not respond.
Is there something that can be done?!
Please, for the love of ipod, help!

this isn't a technical answer, but it might help!
The same thing has happened to me several times now. The first time it did, I spent hours in front of my PC trying to get it to recognise my ipod. A friend suggested that I try giving my ipod a gentle tap on its side (using the side of a table or something). I didn't hold up much hope, but since I was so fed-up, I thought i'd give it a try. To my surprise, my ipod started up straight away.
I don't think this is a long-term solution, but at least it means that your PC/Mac will recognise the ipod so you can restore it.

  • I think my ipod is dead...out of nowhere

It all began as itunes started freezing my computer, then not even reading or recognizing the songs. I had the problem of the songs freezing and then going on to the next and so on. Now even after recharging my ipod all night, the ipod randomly gives me a picture of a dead ipod asking to go to the website for support. But now it doesn't even display this anymore, or not very often. This is after restarting it numerous amounts. The computer has asked me several times to reformat the disc as the hard drive may be corrupted, but it will not allow me to reformat. Any idea as to what could possibly be going on the blitz or if it is just a simple problem? Much appreciated after much frustration. Thanks

    Have you tried a reset?

Ok after my previous question, i now can't run the updater, it saus my ipod can't be supported by this application, so should i just go and buy a new ipod as i can't take another four hours of this....

I 'think' my Ipod Touch is in recovery mode and people say to hold the power and home button for 10 sec and i did, but its still not turning back on. Plus its dead and wont charge. PLZ HELP ME!!!!

    - If in recovery mode the screen will have an iTunes logo with an USB plug.
    - Have you tried connecting it to your computer for a n hw and then see if it appears in iTunes. If it does restore the iPod.
    - If screen is blank, try placing he iPod in recovery mode and then restoring. For recovery mode:

  • ITunes thinks it is syncing music onto my iPod and finishes sync without actually doing it and it is greyed out on "on this iPod" how can I add it properly?

My iTunes is doing the most frustrating thing.
I'm trying to sync a new album I've downloaded and every time I drag it across to my iPod (I manage my music manually) it begins to sync and then finishes almost instantly. Checking in the "on this iPod section" the music is there in that greyed out state with the dotted circles next to each item as if it were to sync but it never does it. Its so frustrating
I tried making it autofill from a playlist only containing the songs I was trying to add and receive the following message:
"iTunes cannnot add any songs to the iPod because it already contains all the song in (titled) playlist."
So it thinks the songs are on there but they're not actually synced.
If you'd like any further info it is an iPod touch 3G i believe, 32G,  OS 6.1.6.
almost filled up but space is definitely not the issue. The files are MPEG audio files 320Kbs
For the record I hate iTunes and all its f**king antics there has to be a better way...

Alrite simple fix if anyones having the same problem sorry, just gotta delete all the greyed out material on your iPod and re - add it seemed to work

... AFAIC Location Services is a joke.
With both devices sitting side by side on my kitchen table, Location Services has NEVER shown the devices to be any where close to each other, and at times Location Services has been as much as a 1/4 of a mile off between the two devices.
Your iPod Touch has no GPS receiver so determining its location relies upon wireless routers whose location is known. Its "location" is actually that of a wireless router. Your iPhone 4 can use GPS, cellular triangulation, and Wi-Fi. One would think GPS would be most accurate but urban areas have a greater density of cells and GPS signals are easily obstructed so cellular triangulation is often more accurate.
Therefore the two devices' locations can be expected to be different. Differences of a quarter mile are easily explained if you understand how location services works: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1975
Skyhook Wireless (I think Apple uses its own database now): http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/
Location Services is not a "joke"; its intended use is for basic navigation and for such applications as determining where the nearest restaurant is. It cannot tell you that your iPod is under the couch cushions and that your iPhone is in the car.

You have to activate a new iPod by either setting it up via wifi network that has an internet connection on to connect to a computer that has iTunes and an internet connection.
You can go to an Apple store or or to a friend's house if necessary

  • Is this iPod dead?

My wife's iPod appears to be dead. It is fully charged, I have attempted to restore it, and not much happens. The display is in black and white and it the click wheel doesn't work (although I could reset it by holding menu and select). Is it time to retire this iPod which worked fine two days ago?

I recently read a post about someone with a similar problem. He claimed that he was able to charge the battery by putting the iPod in disk mode and charging it via the wall/AC adapter.
    Good luck

    (apologies for barging in, lllass.)
Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does your device connect without that message now?

My MAC MINI looses the wi-fi connection to a Belkin N wireless router when it goes to sleep or shuts down.  I have to re select the network when re starting or waking up the computer.  I think this just started with LION.  My iPod and iPad have no problem remembering the wireless network.

Thank you BGreg.  That is what I have been doing, and then it works just fine.  I think it was doing the same thing in the previous version of Lion.  I may be incorrect about that.  I upgraded to 10.7.3 a few weeks ago, and then last week I reloaded the combo update, hoping it would help.  Not so.  Thank you for letting me know it is a common problem.  I have tried permissions in Disk Utilities, and in Macaroni, both at least 4 times, plus numerous restarts.  Nothing Improves.  It still can not find the internet when it wakes up or gets up.

  • My iPod is dead and won't charge or connect to the computer. How can I fix this?

My iPod is dead and won't charge or connect to the computer. How can I fix this? Before it died, it said I had a full battery whenever I charged it, but as soon as it came off of the charger, the battery level was always under ten per cent.

Sounds like the battery needs to be replaced.

  • Anyone think this iPhone case will make a good iPod Touch case?

    http://www.contourcase.com/isee/iseeiphone/
I know the back end of the Touch is going to hang a bit, but do you think this will do a decent job of covering my iPod Touch/will fit on correctly?
    Thanks for any answer.

That case (posted above) will probably leave a massive gap in the casing, as the iPod touch is not as 'bulky' as the iPhone. You may damage your unit more by carrying it in that. If you want a case, i'd go for something like this:
    http://www.iqase.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2
Still for the iPhone, but more likely to hold the touch in place with it's elasticated sides

  • Windows thinks my ipod touch is a digital camera. How do I change this so itunes can see it?

Windows thinks my ipod touch is a digital camera. How can I change the device in windows, so that i can re-register it as an ipod and itunes can connect with it.?

It is normal for the iPod to be seen as a camera since that is how one gets photo off the iPod.  You can turn it off by:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Disabling digital camera notification in Windows XP
To get iTunes to see you iPod see:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
If you previoulys installed camera or scanner software that may be causing the problem.

  • New to Apple, I think my ipod touch is doa

    Hello all
First of all, I would just like to say I am new to Apple and the discussion forums so hello to all!
Unfortunately, my main reason for joining isn't a positive one. I have received an 1st gen 8gb ipod touch from an upgrade offer with a mobile phone network (UK). After a long wait and several complaints to them, they finally sent me the ipod. However, I think the device is dead on arrival.
When I first unboxed it, I did the usual thing: Download iTunes, connect the device to my computer. iTunes informed me that the device was in "recovery mode" and that I must "restore" first to use the iPod. This is where the problem is, the restore process does not complete. I get an "1604" error.
I went to an Apple store, where a kind member of staff attempted to get me started with the device only to encounter the same problem. He pointed out to me that on the same page as the "restore" button in iTunes, the ipod information does not state the device capacity and other information which he found wierd. Could this be clue to whats going on?
The mobile phone network don't want anything to do with my problem as it was a promotional offer, also they no longer have stock of the device and the new ipod is out now. They insist I should take up my problem with apple.
Has anyone had experience with this? Maybe there is someone out there who has also had a doa device. Any advice is much appreciated. What are my options? Am I able to have this device repaired or replaced?
    Many thanks in advance
    -J

Not the 1604, this will lead to error (6).
Had this while trying to update to 2.0.
