I thought this article/series might be of interest

From Tom's Hardware - a survey of Linux Software.  He makes some good points and also he was surprised at just all that was available for Linux:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/lin … ,2407.html

Since those small features tend to be overseen, I write a little post about it, since quite a lot ppl asked for such functionality in mpd.
Well, this feature has been in mpd for a year, but no client made use of it.
Today ncmpcpp finally added support and is now the first client that can prioritize songs without any client-side hacks.
ncmpcpp-git with libmpdclient-git needed for now.
The way this is meant to work is this:
Priorities will only take effect in random mode (inserting songs after the current one was always possible)
So you can have a subset of songs in a static order, while the rest remains in random order.
Right now you have to add all your songs to the playlist first. There you mark the songs and hit ctrl+p
From there you can enter a value between 0 and 255, where 255 has highest priority.

  • HT1449 Ok. I have an '06 Macbook Pro still running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and iTunes 10.6.1. I did everything in this article leading up to step 14. I thought I trashed the right file, now I can't access my music which is on my external drive now. Help!

As stated in my above Subject field. I have an older Macbook Pro and I was attempting to move my iTunes media file using this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
After getting to step number 14, I "thought" I selected the correct media file to trash from my system. Now I have my correctly copied Itunes file on my external drive that can't be accessed when I reopen iTunes. How can I get iTunes to open to my new destination now? I went to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and selected the new location then click OK, but it still won't access.
What am I doing wrong here?

I had the same problem and found the answer!
In Outlook, go to the Help menu, then Check for Updates.
I downloaded & updated Outlook, then it upgraded my database, and everything worked out fine for me!
    Good luck!

  • HT1198 I shared disk space and my iPhoto library as described in this article. When creating the disk image, I thought I had set aside enough space to allow for growth (50G). I'm running out of space. What's the best way to increase the disk image size?

    Done. Thank you, Allan.
The sparse image article you sent a link to needs a little updating (or there's some variability in prompts (no password was required) with my OS and/or Disk Utility version), but it worked.
Phew! It would have been much more time consuming to use Time Machine to recover all my photos after repartitioning the drive.

  • HT1222 This article contains absolutely NO information about the update being offered.

This article contains absolutely NO information about the update being offered. It doesn't even tell me what it might break on my system (i.e. what gets changed). Just excuses of "We Aren't Telling Until Our Investigation Is All Done."
That's not a good enough reason to install an update, it never was, and it never will be.
"Do it because we say so" might fly overseas in Foxconn factories, but around here we don't like being kept in the dark and fed a load of fertilizer.

The individual update pages, such as this one, list the changes and fixes. The reference to information which Apple doesn't release is about security bugs it's identified but not patched, as it would only be useful to attackers.

    Did they drink the water?
Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad or another 10W/12W Apple charger and, one at a time, charge both units overnight.  Do NOT use an iPod/iPhone (5W) charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know.  If the above test does, in fact, indicate a problem, read this.
    Also, according to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • OSX Security Vulnerabilities - 20 found according to this article

Via Gizmodo, here is an article about a guy finding 20 zero-day security holes in OSX. Zero-day threats refer to security vulnerabilities which do not yet have a fix. At present, Macs are highly resistant but not immune to viruses, but this article does raise a few red flags. Thoughts?

This article is vague and unhelpful. My iTunes needs help from a pro.
I have over 120,000 songs -- NO movies, TV, radio, or books...
I have other programs which efficiently run things which are not audio-based.
So why can I not get iTunes working well?? It now takes at least 10 secs for any operation to be completed!
That is just plain evil. But I am sure I could do something to help.
All the music is on an 2T external drive.

TS1717 as noted in the thread title...
Brigancook, is the library database on the external or just the media? iTunes reevaluates smart playlists and rewrites its database after every action on the library. I've found this can make a library half that size, with a lot of smart playlists, quite sluggish. That said I'm aware part of my problem is aging hardware. Having the database on the internal drive may improve performance if it is currently on the external.
I'd expect to see an exponential relationship between size and response time which may explain what you see. Cutting down on the number of smart playlists might help. If we're really lucky the long awaited iTunes 11 might have streamlined some of the background processes as well as cleaning up the front end.

  • HT4889 This article should mention stuff you need to know after migration is done

This article should mention stuff you need to know after migration is done, such as why MA makes "from old Mac" folders, for example
      XYZ (from old Mac)
    alongside the
      XYZ
    folder?
And why after migration onto a clean system are there both of these:
      /Users/xyz/
      /Users/xyz 1/

It might be helpful if you posted a link to the article.

  • HT5246 The above info is confuses me.  I thought this trojan horse affected those who had Java (JRE) up and running  i.e.,Safari security Java checkbox enabled.  I also believed this Trojan horse affected those using Snow Leopard. Clarify please.

The above info re the Flashback removal tool confuses me.  I thought this trojan horse affected those who had Java (JRE) up and running  i.e.,Safari security Java checkbox enabled.  I also believed this Trojan horse also affected those using Snow Leopard. Clarify please.

There are several variants of the trojan. The first ones were released as installers for Adobe Flash and therefore did not require you to have Java on your system. Later variants took advantage of a Java vulnerability and could install themselves by simply visiting a rogue Web site. Therefore, even without Java installed if you had run a rogue updater for Adobe Flash or Reader, then you might have installed the trojan.
The trojan also affects Snow Leopard and prior versions of OS X (so far the code is known to be intel-only, but this is unconfirmed), but Apple has only issued patches for supported versions of the OS (version 10.6 or later).
Apple's removal tools run in OS X 10.6 or later if you instlal the Java update, and the standalone removal tool is for Lion only. Why Apple does not offer options for other operating systems is beyond me, but that's the way of things. Right now there are other tools you can use to check for and remove the malware on versions of OS X that Apple does not support: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57413811-263/flashback-malware-removal-tool -roundup/

Does this article apply to OS X Lion and Airport Utility 6.0?
Reason: Airport Utility cannot find my Airport Extreme (4th generation) wirelessly on my Time Capsule configured network even although the firmware in both units is up to date.

I thought you were trying to Extend the network with an Express as the article mentions you pointed to...
You can't find the Airport Extreme then...
I woudl suggest doing a Factory reset....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
Then you should be able to set it up just as you did when it was new....
Factory default reset (using reset button)
If the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule isn't accessible from AirPort Utility, the Factory Default reset can be accomplished by using the reset button.
Unplug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule from power.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light (LED) flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
Release the button. This will factory default reset the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.

  • What do you think about this article?

What do you think about this article?
+"A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges"+
    Seems to make sense..
I knew that lithium-ion batteries have no memory concerns, but still I thought that it was a good idea to charge and discharge the battery of a new iPod (or laptop) at least the first time..
    Any thoughts?
    Message was edited by: acidbahia

The reason it's sometimes recommended to do a full discharge/charge cycle on a new device is to calibrate the battery indicator. It doesn't do anything for the battery itself.
The quote you've given agrees with everything I've been taught about lithium-ion batteries.

  • HT1848 This article is no longer accurate in 2014

Not a question but a note:
In 2014 and 2013, this article (articleId=HT1848) is no longer accurate.
In recent versions including 11.4(18), the actual behavior is unrelated to the image in the article; rather, File->Devices->Transfer Purchases From <device>

    Hey Clintonfrombirmingham
I called Apple technical support in Denmark, but with no positive reply.
She couldn't do anything, and said that They had sent a recall Email about the problem and with their offer to repair the Macbook Pro, but I'd never recieved an Email about the problem. She wasn't in power to make an exception. It can't be true that i paid a lot of money, for a product that can't barely stand on its own feets, Apple didn't tell me that the product I was about to buy, would restart every 5 minute. and now when  they know the problem, they wont repair it? it just don't make sense for me. If a car seller discovers that all the brakes in a car he had sold, will crash after some years he will call all the cars back to repair no mater what. i just don't understand how Apple will make good service for their custumers, by extending the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but wont take the computers there is a little bit to old, 4 months will make the difference. i can't believe it.
    What can i do now?
    best regards Oskar
