I tried to open too many files in preview and now it won't open at all.

how do I change the settings so that it doesn't keep trying to reopen these same files?

I have tried to force close/quit but every time I try to get back into the "preview" application, it tries to reopen the same files. It may actually be a setting with all of my applications as they all open the file I was last working on. Is there a way to change that?

  • HT2506 Too many files in Preview

I opened too many files in preview. 5 or so Powerpoints and 3 PDFs. They are all stuck in a pinwheel load page. Is there a way i can exit them? they don't respond at all but the application is not recognized as "not responding". Force quit only closes preview, when i open it back up it just starts again trying to open the windows.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ Force Quit...
then select the frozen application from the list and press return. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock or in the Applications folder.

  • I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all

I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all. Simply get the Apple logo and the clock below and then after about 10 mins the laptop switched itself off. The Snow Leopard  disk is a brand new family edition. Error message when attempting to install was that "this software cannot be installed on this disk".

Thanks Fred, but I've tried '''ALL''' that already.
I '''THINK''' I might have found the problem - the Profiles folder has been locked by inherited properties from the levels above. I have had to go all the way up to my User folder and reset ALL the properties from there down to be unlocked so that I could remove the prefs.js file so that it could be recreated on the next launch of FF. Exactly why my User folder is locked in such a way as to stop me/FF making changes when I have been able to alter preferences at will in the past, I don't know ...
So far, so good. I have since done a complete shutdown and when I restarted this morning, FF seems to be behaving itself ...

  • I tried to restore my iPod Touch 2nd generation and now it won't sync to itunes.  on the screen it shows the usb end of the cord and the iTunes logo over it.  Is it broken?

I tried to restore my ipod touch 2nd generation  and now it won't sync to itunes.    On the screen is the USB end of the cord and the iTunes logo over it.
I have turned it off and on,  held the off button down and  the select button down but it still comes up with that picture on the screen.    Have I broken it?
    Please help.

It means the device is in recovery mode.  You'll need to reconnect it to iTunes and restore it again.
You may need to connect it in recovery mode manually using the instructions in this Apple support document.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Too many files on 10.4 Desktop - Finder won't load

    2.66 DualCore Intel Xeon + OSX 10.4.10 + 2Gb DDR2 DIMM + 230Gb ST3250820AS + OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A
Despite recurrent warnings, a relative kept leaving too many files on the Desktop, up to 300 files (JPGs, downloaded archives). Last week, after attempting to move/copy them to a folder, OSX crashed, and now Finder won't load; after password screen, menu bar and Dock appear, the 'MyDay' app (from Entourage) starts bouncing, and system freezes. Sometimes it goes back to password screen, and from there again to a frozen, empty finder with dead mouse pointer. Other times the spinning clock or wheel remain spinning forever.
Tried DiskUtility, repaired disk and permissions, reset PRAM, no dice.
Tried to boot off the 10.4.10 DVD, it doesn't allow to run OSX from the disc (I have a vague recollection of doing this once, but...)
Started in SafeBoot mode, finder froze at same stage.
Re-Installed OSX 10.4.10 in Archive and Install mode, same freeze at same stage.
The only explanation for the crash, as no updates/new app installing happened, is that there are, again, too many loose files on the desktop and as it tries to load the Finder it crashes. I'm hauling the machine ASAP to try with my own Intel to try access his disk via FireWire target mode but worry the same thing will happen on my system, that it will balk at too many files.
Is there a way to try to fix this without resorting to clean install (needless to say, last backup was months ago)? If I install Leopard on that disk (it comes out fine in Disk Utility) will the same thing happen as soon as it tries to load the Finder? Is there a way to boot 10.4 off a CD/DVD?
Thanks for any info or tips!

    Welcome to the forums!
Make your relative write this out 1000 times:
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.

  • HT201210 I tried to update my iphone and now it won't work at all

I tried to update my iphone and now it won't work at all

Yes, connect to your computer with the latest version of iTunes installed and restore it. If it doesn't show up in iTunes when you connect it see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • HT1459 i tried to restore but there was an error and now ipod won't turn back on

randomly my music wouldn't sunc with my ipod today, so i tried to restore it. however, there was an error during restoring and now my computer won't recognize my ipod and the screen on my ipod keeps going to the "itunes/connecter" picture and it won't so anything else. how do i fix this?

  • Too many files in Music and ITunes folders

I'm backing up my computer and found that the Music folder had 80gb of music. Theres my space issue I've been trying to solve.
In our home we have two iPod Touches and two iPhones. We have three different libraries and two different apple accounts.
It has a copy of the music in all the different libraries along with the original in the Music folder.
I need help simplifying my folders. Does it have to copy each file to each library? What files can I delete without causing issues? The iTunes library ones?
And once these folders are trimmed down, how can I prevent this from happening again?

I'm not having an issue sharing the music, that's already set up. The problem is that everyone's own pod/phone has it's own folder with the music files in it that itunes saves to when we add songs. At some point I must have checked it to "organize" albeit make lots of copies of the same files.
For instance, I'll have an album by Tom Petty.
That file will be in my Public/Music folder, as well as Public/Music/Itunes Library 1, 2, and 3. Cause my iphone/ipod has it's own sync/set up, as do the others in the family.
I want to delete this excess, but all of the files in my itunes library are pointing to those specific libraries (within the public music folder), so if I went in and deleted, it looks like I'll bjork my library.
But I don't want to have the Tom Petty albums saved four times on my pc. I want to keep our own libraries, I'm not interested in having all the Camp Rock soundtracks on my phone, but I don't want the music saved so many times.
How would I do this? And begin to remove all these files to a more reasonable folder size?

  • Too many files in sidebar and out of order

Somehow I've ended up with the entire contents of one of my folders – 200+ files – in my sidebar. What did I press to do that?
The problem is – how do I get rid of them? There does not appear any way to select them all at once. Doing it one at a time will be awfully slow.
Also, they are in reverse alphabetical order and I can't find any way to change that.
    Any suggestions?

You could delete the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file, located in your user's Library/Preferences folder.

  • I tried to upgrade from FF7 beta to FF7 and now I have no Firefox at all

I was using the FF7 beta. When I saw that FF7 had been released, I downloaded and tried to install it, without uninstalling the beta first. That may have been a mistake. It got partway through the install process and then asked me to reboot the computer. After the reboot, my FF shortcut no longer worked ("Searching for firefox.exe"). I used another browser to download the installer again and ran it, only to be told that I needed to reboot my computer in order for a previous install to complete. I rebooted; no change. Attempting to remove the existing installation in Add/Remove Programs has not helped, though Mozilla Firefox is no longer listed there.
I'm using Windows XP and my standard user account doesn't have admin privileges. This hasn't been a problem for Firefox until, perhaps, now. I've tried running the installer from an admin account as well, with the same result.
Is there anything I can remove manually to fix this?

OK... I found a Mozilla Support article - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/The%20program%20must%20close%20to%20allow%20a%20previous%20installation%20attempt%20to%20complete - which says deleting xpicleanup.dat will solve the problem; but I guess that's out of date (or the presence of that file isn't the only cause of the bug), because there's no xpicleanup.* on my machine. However, elsewhere in this forum - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/786890 - I found a suggestion to install the new version somewhere other than the default folder. I did that, and it worked; and it even preserved my bookmarks, add-ons and previously-opened tabs. (If anyone finds this while trying to solve their own upgrade/install failure: choose Custom rather than Standard install, and just change the suggested folder name.)
The only remaining sign of the problem is the icon in my Quick Launch area: if I try to use it to launch Firefox, I still get the error "Windows cannot open this file: firefox.exe.moz.delete". Having recorded that here for posterity, I'll be replacing the icon.

  • I clicked block in youtube trying to disable an ad on the video, but now videos won't play at all. I checked my adblock plus preferences and youtube isn't listed as blocked. Help please!

At youtube's home page, thumbnails for videos show up, but when I go to the video itself, it just shows up as a black rectangle. Videos embedded on other sites aren't working either.

  • Photoshop CS6 error "could not complete ... too many files open. Try closing........." with 3D psd?

Im working in a .psd file with multiple 3D layers. The file size totals at 356mb.
When opening the file, I get this error: "could not complete your request because there are too many files open. Try closing some windows and try again." This doesn't any sense to me, as I was not experiencing any chugging when the file was open, and I am on a relatively fast system.
    Win 7 64bit
    Intel i7-2760QM @ 2.4GHz (8 CPU)
    16 gigs ram
    Nvidia GTX 560M (2752mb)

Having the same issue on the Mac!
Worked on a file yesterday, fairly big, but nothing that I haven't handled before... Only difference was the 3DS file I imported has over 270 textures.
I think there is a limit on how many textures can be imported, essentially corrupting the file on save. It would be a lot more helpful to have Photoshop warn us that the 3D model is too complicated before we import it and save our work looking forward to finishing off the next day.
I tried the same model again today, did nothing other than position it and render it, then saved, same error on opeing: "Could not complete your request because there are too many files open. Try closing some windows and try again."
If anyone at Adobe would like to have a look ta the file the smaller version that I did today I can upload somewhere or send a YouSendIt.
    Cheers.
